The Western Digital 2.0 GB external hard drive is great. It backs up my computer automatically every night with tons or room to spare to download music, movies, etc. I highly recommend this hard drive.

I got this 4 weeks before and it was easy to setup. Just hooked it up via USB, formatted it to NTFS and it works.I would have rated it 5 stars if it has security or password protection features and I would make two partitions. I tried looking for softwares which could protect my external harddisk from access.

A friend asked if he should purchase this drive and I did the research for him. I ignored the many bad reviews here, and lived to regret it. I usually love WD stuff, I have enjoyed exceptional reliability from my WD drives. My friends problem started about after 2 weeks of use, got the dreaded paging error. The WD site doesnt even have an entry in the FAQ for this error even though it seems very common here and elsewhere.Do not purchase this drive. Buy something from Lacie or anyone else.What a horrible blot this drive is on WD's reputation.

I had no experience with external hard drives before, I was recommended by a friend to get this. It was easy to install. 500 GB of hard drive space I guess is nothing to sneeze at. My Hard drive on my computer only has 37.2GB of space, so this solves my problem. I am able to put a lot of music files on the external hard drive. For $150 it is definitely a good buy.

This drive is trash. My computer would not recognize this drive. It does recognize other drives, so I've ruled out any local machine issues. WD Tech Support is a joke,so keep shopping for a better drive.

I have owned 2 of these for over 2 months now and have not had any problems with either one of them. They are quiet and easy to use. Great for storing tons of photos,audio books and movies. I would definitely recommend them and very satisfied so far.

Dealing with as much media as I do, I really needed the extra disk space on the go. This hard drive is an superb choice for high volume mobility. Note: the computer MUST be off to disconnect eSATA.

i had one that was like this after a year and half the thing Fryed the hard drive and the Chip bored with it so if ya get one of theses be Careful it may fry after a few years.p.s i hardly used mine by the way

This external hard drive was a great addition to my PC. 2 months after I started using it, my PC hard drive crashed. Since I run a small business with the PC, this was potentially devastating. After installing a new HD, I recovered within a couple of days because I had my data backed up. I highly recommend backing up, at least daily. This is an easy way to do it because you can schedule when and what type of backup you want either manual or automatic. The only warning I have is that there is not a lot of documentation that comes with the unit and the online support is not easy to access.

I purchased this hard drive to store and back-up music and video files. In the first 4 months, it worked fine but copying larger files was very slooow. One day after 4 months, I started the computer and got a message that the hard drive needed to be reformated. After working with tech support, I needed to reformat the drive, losing all the files stored there. The files were "recoverable" but at an additional cost. NOT TRUSTWORTHY!

This drive is OK. It does what it is supposed to do, i.e. backup, either complete backups or incremental. It would be nice if it had a one-button backup like some other drives, but it doesn't. It is somewhat noisy, so I have only been turning it on to make my backups. The software is not very polished. I would highly recommend purchasing another software backup package. Also, customer sevice is terrible. Since I have a MAC, I had to erase the drive, download their MAC software and install it. The instructions in the manual were totally inadequate. Since I had some questions about the installation, I e-mailed tech support who claimed they would respond within one business day. I got a reply almost 2 weeks later, and my questions were not completely answered. Fortunately, in the meantime I had figured out the proper installation procedures on my own. Hardware is OK, company is questionable.

Out of the box it was great, high speed transfers, both USB and firewire, though I could have done without ll the included apps, google search really didn't do much for me. I got the click of death within 7 months and lost all the data on board. Looking through the reviews this seems to be a fairly common experience. Class action?

The price was right, and the drive so far has performed reliably. I reformatted it when it arrived and didn't install any of the bundled tools, and promptly transferred 400+ gigs of stuff over. It's quick and quiet, and the good ventilation on its case ensures that it never runs too hot for comfort.Would like to get another one of these so the one I already have won't be too lonely on my desktop.

I backed everything up to the Mybook, sold my computer, and before I had a new one in place the drive took a small fall on it's side (nothing that should have done the damge it did) and that was it. Drive crashed, data recovery impossible, I lost everything - years of photos, video, documents - the whole lot gone. This machine is manufactured as cheaply as possible, it is extremley fragile, it's ugly, it's loud, and if you value what you are putting on it - please, please, please - buy something else - or buy like 4 of them so you can cover the failure rate.

I have the earlier model, silver instead of black, but it's very likely that they're essentially the same box. It just stopped working for no apparent reason. Couldn't access it from my laptop, so I powered down, and it won't power back on again. It was sitting there comatose but powered on, now it won't even power on. No unusual use. Googled "western digital died" and got a LOT of reviews where this happened to other people. Be careful. Don't do what I did - all my iTunes content is on there. Every movie, every TV show, every song, every podcast. All gone. Probably forever. Google "Western Digital died" and look for a better brand name.

As the title says, it's a great price (right now, spring 2008) for what you get. 320GB and Firewire, which was my biggest point.

Like so many other people who have purchased a Western Digital My Book Essential Edition. Mine went dead after less than a month. I will never, never purchase a WD product again. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me.

After one year of use this drive keeled over with a click of death.This is the most expensive drive out there, because first you have to pay for the drive, then for data recovery.

I have to assume that the folks writing bad reviews of this unit are newbies to PC's or just expect too ...... well nuff said.This review is of the "Essentials" model, $136 at purchase time. The unit was running within 2 minutes of opening the box. It's attached to a PC that's less than a year old running XP. It's silent and copied 1702 files totaling 582 MB in 2 min 15 seconds. After a 45 min reformate to NTFS (vs FAT-32 it arrived formated for) it's doing fine.Can not comment on the included software as I did not want it and used the format to get rid of it. It might be helpful to some,but I backup files as necessary and don't need a mirror image. Very good buy for the money.

As a last resort, I called customer service. They verified that it was a DUD and told me that they could send me a replacement if I give them a credit card number to hold while I return the DUD. Because I only had a debit card, they said that would work just fine BUT they would DEDUCT the cost of the REPLACEMENT drive from my card until the DUD arrived there.An absolute ripoff!! I have spent the whole day crying over this STUPID HARD DRIVE and I will definately NEVER deal with WESTERN DIGITAL again! Their product AND their service STINK!

I bought my Mybook about six months ago and it has been working beautifully the whole time. I just filled this drive and will purchase a second one after the holidays. It runs quietly and shuts off when not accessed for awhile. There is a slight pause while the drive spins up when you access it again but not a big deal to me. My experience with this product has been universally positive. I would recommend it to anybody looking for inexpensive mass storage.

This piece of garbage worked only once. Now it won't even start up. No sound, no power. I tried it in another outlet, same thing. WD web site will make me return it to get a replacement. I won't ever buy another Western Digital product.
