I was very excited to get this product when I first bought it. Everything ran very smoothly and I could look through files quickly.After less than a year of owning this product, however, the hard drive crashed and I needed to get all of my files recovered (which we all know is expensive). If you're looking for an external hard drive, look at reviews and read them... this may not be the one you want if you're looking to own a hard drive for a long period of time.

I bought this drive as a brand-new, sealed box item, and used it infrequently for 18 months, with no real problems. Five days ago, it began emitting random sequences of two to 10 "click" sounds, several times a day. And today, it died, with all the files that once resided upon it just ... --vanishing. I'd give it an "R.I.P.", if I didn't think that it's hardly unreasonable to expect a significantly longer lifespan for a major peripheral like this; I mean, 18 MONTHS? C'MON! Apparently, Western Digital is a junk peddler. (Indeed, now that I think of it, the unit actually has a junky "feel" to it; cheap plastic, flimsy construction, and all.) Buyer beware.

I got one of these for Christmas and no sooner than when I plugged it into my computer I could start using it. It is great for storing large amounts of data, like Recorded TV Shows from Windows Media Center. It can also Be used with a PC an A MAC. Even Though IS says 500 GB there is Only 465 GB to use.

When we got the hard drive it gave us errors about the installation information being damaged, after we worked with it for a while we got it to work. It's a great product (now) and the seller got it to us really quickly and at a great price.

This is a very nice, very simple, very stable product. I just bought my fourth of these... a testimony to my happiness with the item. One problem: I had one of these take a tumble to the floor from a 30-inch work surface while operating. It sort-of worked, but was not reliable afterwards.

I purchased the WD external hard drive. I wanted to put extra music and photos on it so it would not clog up my computer. How about, I transferred my music and photos over to the drive and it lost all my information. Then, while I was trying to recover these items, it went into hibernation mode. It was so frustrating just trying to make this thing work properly that I returned it and got my money back. In my opinion, I made a mistake buying this thing and I would not purchase this particular hard drive. Your mileage may vary. NEOSOUL06

My my book crashed within a few months. The customer service never picks up the phone. It just keeps ringing. The enclosure is sealed so I can't check open it unless I want to void the warranty, which I will do tommorrow.If you buy this product just keep your fingers crossed that you will never need customer support. Warranty is meaningless.

I purchased 2 of these and connected them to my pc's, and configured weekly back ups of all of my files.I've been happy with them, good value for the price and plenty of storage space for my needs.

I bought this product and partitioned it in a Laptop (ThinkPad T41). It worked fine. And then I attached it to my desktop (Compaq Evo W6000). It worked fine for a while (5 minutes something), then the drives became inaccessible. Unplug and plug again. Got the same issue.It was returned because I really can not count on a product works this way because I have no idea if it will keep the data safely.

It works great, I run Linux (Fedora 7) and I only had to plug in the usb cable and it just works. (It also work in windows without any problem.It is very quiet and it does not take much space on my desk.

I received this hard drive promptly and was very easy to set up. You can decline the Google software in the beginning. I use it to store my pictures and music to make room on my desktop. Of course, my pics are put on cd's as well for backup.

Had it for over a year now and it's performed flawlessly. Nice and quiet. I plugged and I played. I'm a big fan of Western Digital now. I've also owned their super fast Raptor HD for over 3 years and it's still going strong.

The WD premium 500gb harddisk is compact, has a good amount of storage space and is fast and reliable. It has a nominal 7,200 RPM speed and 16mb buffer. Noise/ heat emanating from the unit is low. There is a handy AUTO sleep/ wakeup feature.The difference between this and the Essential edition is the FireWire 400 and capacity guage in the Premium edition.However, as many others have mentioned before, the inner blue ring meant to be the Capacity Gauge gets a lot of background light from the outer ring, and hence its function is still in doubt for me.But, considering performance, reliability and storage-this is a great drive to archive files-for students, professionals and home users alike.This unit isn't small enough for travel use though. So, I use a 120gb WD Passport for that. The real difference is the USB powerup in the passport (but slower R/W speed) vs the Power cord in the MyBook (with higher transfer speeds.)

I use this drive to compliment Time Machine on my iMac. It is always on and always completely out of mind because it is the quietest external drive I have ever had. Top it off, it looks great too.

I purchased this drive after reading good reviews on it, and used it to store most of my media files which my harddrive could no longer hold. Worst Idea Ever. After simply being knocked over onto its side on my desk, the product has stopped being recognized by my computer and it appears I have lost all my media files. Definitely not worth it, and I would recommend not storing your files on it. It is not a safe hard drive.

The first thing that happened when I plugged the USB only version of My Book into my computer was a hard crash. Meaning that I had to shut down the computer and reboot. Every time I tried to boot the computer with the drive plugged in, the computer would crash. When I booted, then turned on the drive, sometimes it would come up and sometimes it wouldn't. Once up, I had to format it to get the larger file sizes (You'd think with a drive this big, it would be understood that the user has large files). Not a problem, but why?Transfering files was painfully slow. It took about 24 hours to transfer about 70GB. When I realized that I was going from one external drive to another, I made sure to go from an internal drive from that point on. However, it still took overnight to transfer about 30 GB. My USB port, might be 1.1, however, accounting for the slow speed, but the crashes were ridiculous and I was happy just to get the data back onto my internal drive.I already owned 2 Maxtor One Touch drives, so I returned the My Book and paid the extra money for another Maxtor and as with the other two, I plugged it in and it worked immediately and flawlessly. Voila. I should have just done the (firewire) Maxtor in the first place, but I was trying to save a little money.

I had 3 computers all with hard drives barely having a few hundred MB left since I need to keep a huge amount of data for research purposes. I used to go through the cumbersome task of backing up the data on DVDs, but recently even this solution wouldn't be as helpful.I got the WD My Book 500GB and I'm totally relieved now. Its black casing is stylish and it works very quietly. The installation of My Book is as easy as plugging in its USB connector (I've a machine running on Windows XP Professional with USB 2.0 jacks). The button on the front is very helpful for turning the device on and off if you want to switch computers.I've also downloaded a backup/restore program called "Second copy" which is powerful yet simple to use. I got it to work in a matter of minutes and scheduled automatic backup updates every day (which takes a few seconds). It can't get easier than this!The only issue is that it comes with a FAT32 file system, which most probably you want to change to NTFS (in case you don't need to operate it in a DOS based environment). The formatting takes a substantially long time. I would rather to have had the option of file system while buying this device. Nevertheless, it's a one time procedure and thereafter you can enjoy your huge, fast and reliable storage.

I couldn't find what I needed at any of the big box stores. I ordered through Amazon and requested standard (free) delivery. Delivery took 10 days. Drive arrived in good shape. It was exactly what I needed. Runs good - no problemo.

I have 450Gb of irreplaceable pictures and personal stuff on this drive. I was pulling a few last bits from a shared drive when i got these error messages on all of the files, i canceled the files tried to access the drive and i get a message something like "a USB device is connected" but i can't see the HDD. I tried several different pc's, powered on and off a dozen times, and pretty much every combination of plugging/unplugging you can imagine many times over. It was never dropped or mishandled in anyway and i get a repetitious buzzing sound for about 45 seconds then nothing. Hopefully the small tech store down the road can access or repair the drive and rescue my data. It was a great drive until 8 days of ownership and it stopped working. I would send it back to WD but then my personal info is everybody's info. Kind of a catch 22 on HDD repairs/returns, no money back, your data is lost, but no one else can see what you have either. I guess if i can't have it then no one will.

I purchased this product in 7/2007 as a backup storage device for my mac mini (duo core). It worked as expected until 11/2007, at which time it nearly ruined my computer by causing it to over heat. I verified this cause at the apple store, using their diagnostic devices. I have purchased since then two different WD My Books (professional model) and am very pleased with them. I RECOMMEND NOT GETTING THIS PRODUCT!

Great product. Works great with my MacBook and Mac OS X Leopard's Time Machine. Easy setup: no manual needed. Love the Firewire cable included. I only have two USB ports, so the firewire cable is quite handy (there's a USB cable in the box, as well).
