Here is my only complaint. The drive is indeed easily set up on most computers (plug it in and it's good) however the power cord and physical size make this fairly unwieldy. You will groan each time you have to yank the power cord and brick out of the wall to move it to a different computer or travel. For me, it wasn't worth it to put up with this when similar storage-size USB powered drives that are half the size and 1/3 the weight are available and require no power cord.If you plan to leave it on one desk and not move it much then it should be fine! It does work well and is speedy.

I had this drive for over a year. I had it just about full of important video files. I had it standing up instead of flat, and when the cat bumped it, it tipped over. That's right, it just tipped over. It didn't fall off the desk or smash on the ground, it just went from standing to sitting. Well, I guess that was enough, because after that, it stopped working. Goodbye files. Overall, I'd say look elsewhere.

This turned out to be wicked external hard drive. Its so idiot proof, you just plug it in... and yeah, thats all you have to do and POOF, it works. Really, REALLY easy to use. My only qualm is that the drive doesn't actually have 500GB of space, but actually ~465GB. Not very happy about that, but it's only ~35GB off of 500GB so its not very critical, I just wish it hadn't been advertised as 500GB, instead of it's actual capacity.

My friends and I bought these to store our digital and scanned photo collections. The "Book" is really "plug and play." There was none of the frustration sometimes found with new tech devices. If you can manage a USB stick you can manage My Book. If you can't have a computer for each person in the family, a solution is to get a 500 GB individual storage device for each person. For ease of use and capacity, it's a good buy.

I feel like the luckiest person today (knock on wood). I purchased this drive about 8 months ago and had filled it about 80-90% over that time. I had backed the data up to other sources, but not consistently. Last week, I was reading reviews of other people that had bought this drive and figured I was pushing my luck so I backed the entire drive onto a second drive, just in case. This week...? The entire thing crashed and everything is gone. Computer won't even recognize it anymore. These drives seem to have some serious problems with them. I definitely wouldn't use them as a primary storage drive.

Worked beautifully. NOTE: you can't install the card, and then connect the drive.I bought the seperate SIIG card, and SIIG cable. (This drive only comes with a USB 2.0 cable).You have to have everything installed and connected, then fire up your computer, and it needs to be connected to the internet. Vista downloads and installs the drivers automatically. It works awesome! If you don't have internet access on your box, you can get the driver files from the SIIG website.SOOOO FAST! Puts FW800 and other interfaces to shame.(speed only as fast as the slowest drive in your configuration, of course. Example: if you are copying a file from an internal 1.5Gb/s SATA drive to this drive, it is only as fast as the 1.5...)enjoy

Do NOT buy this drive. Western Digital My Book is unreliable. I've had two of these drives, and they both died after a few months of very light use. In both cases, the drive suddenly started making the infamous clicking sound of death, and all the data was lost.

Hopefully they will invent Flash drives that have large amounts of spacebecause Hard Disk are not trust worthy, as I have learned from my own expirience. So if you buy this, buy 2 of them. One as your main and one as your back up. They are just to fragile. Overall its not a bad product and will et you by for a while till the fash drives with 500GB make thier apperance!

I had the WD for about a month then all of a sudden my home and laptop computers no longer recognizes it as a drive. I have tried many tech supports and all say I am screwed and my data is lost. WD will replace it though...cool to bad I had 300gb of info on it right!

This drive is nothing but headaches. I just recieved it in the mail about 3 days ago. First of all they dont tell you, that you need to reformat it when you first get it. You have to basically already know how to do that. It takes a couple hours to format. Well once that was done it worked for about a day or 2 then my computer stopped seeing it. Time to get a refund i guess....by the way my maxtor external works fine.

Our family purchased 3 of these (1 x 250) and 2 of the 500's here. We use them to supplement storage realtime and also for backup. Wish I would have read the reviews here first!One of our 500 has just died. Most of the data is backed up (on another Western Digital unfortunately) but what a waste of time and money! We will not buy another Western Digital or Maxtor (similar experience) for a long time.Update: Our second 500 GB Western Digital died after just 2 weeks of "primary" use (it had been our backup). Ordered a Calvary unit and it wouldn't even turn on out of the box - customer service recommended returning it. We bought a Seagate FreeAgent. Quite and fast - so far so good....

I have had this for a little over a year and it failed. It started making clicking noises. When I googled this I found out I was not alone. LOTS of people have trouble with these drives - they are very unreliable. I recently bought another one and am now scared that I will lose the data on that drive. DONT buy a MY BOOK!!!!

The power supply failed on this thing after I backed up tons of files to it. I found another power supply to try with it so I could find out if the actual drive still worked. It didn't. It's less than 2 months old.UPDATE 10/31/11***I wound up buying a brand new WD power supply on a whim, hoping it would work and I could retrieve my lost files. It DID work and has continued to work ever since. So I have upgraded the stars rating on this to 3, instead of the 1 star I gave it earlier.

If you use this with a Mac make sure you format it for one (unless you plan on using it with a PC). I bought this last May or June and have had no issues with it whatsoever. I use it primarily as a backup for my music and office files and for large movie files. I'm considering buying a bigger one so I can store more stuff.

Take it as a warning and don't buy this product. Worked the first time we plugged it in an transferred 30 gb worth of photos and videos of my baby and family. Thank god we decided to check them on the drive before deleting them from our laptop and guess what?? We could not access the drive after that. It kept on coming with an error message and couldn't be opened....so it was dead in just one day.Just wasn't worth for even a cent. It was a piece of trash!!

First the pros: The unit worked out of the gate and is very quiet. Reformatted to NTFS and that worked out fineSecond the cons: The drive comes with no discernable way to upgrade to another drive later. 1TB drives will be at this price point next year and I didn't want to especially buy another external appliance. Also the fact I have a power brick is not great. My other external drive has a direct plug into the wall, so this is another piece to bring along. It would be nice if there were some actual instructions as what the software was on the drive. What was there was .pdfs of the included installation instructions. I don't need an installation manual, I would like to know what the bundled software is (was). As many other have said, the case is made of a cheap plastic. I hope it holds up.UPDATE: ok, I have been using the drive for a little while now and I have to say that I am not as happy as I was earlier. The drive is relatively slow compared to my other two external drives (not WD). Access times are slow and navigating is slow. Worse, the drive seems to go unresponsive occasionally for several seconds at a time, causing my laptop to become unresponsive. My other two external units do not perform this slowly nor do they cause these performance issues. I'm not changing the rating, but if you could put up with a little extra noise, I would recommend getting a good Seagate or Samsung drive and sticking it into an external drive enclosure yourself.

I was surprised by the amount of information I can store on this product, and since its power mode is tied into the computer, you don't have to worry about it randomly turning on and off. Great product.

I've only had this drive a short time, but so far I've had no problems. The 500GB MyBook received some less than favorable reviews, so I purchased the 320GB drive. It was easy to set up, and the included backup software is convenient and simple to configure. At first I had it connected to my computer by USB, but when I purchased a Firewire card to connect a digital movie camera, I reconnected the MyBook drive to Firewire without a problem. I strongly recommend an external hard drive for daily backups and an occasional disk image, and the Western Digital MyBook 320 GB drive is a good choice.

I use this drive with my MacBook Pro as my OS X Leopard "Time Machine" back up drive. It works great! I haven't had any problems with it and it appears to be very durable.

I've had this for a while, I only use it for a backup, so it is not on everyday. It worked out of the box, and I did not have any problem with setting it up.

I am very happy with this purchase. Plugged the HD and powered it up and XP automatically recognized the drive. I was able to transfer large files from my internal HD to the WD HD. Not sure what the issue is with FAT32 and NTFS. I transferred 4GB plus files from my desktop to the WD HD without problem. Like the feature of HD turning on/off with computer or you can manually turn it off and removing the HD from computer. I'm thinking of purchasing another WD HD. Nice form factor and price.

On a daily basis I must reboot my computer so that it is able to find this unit. I have quickly lost confidence in this item and have decided to purchase a DVD recorder to back up my important files. Regretfully I cannot recommend this item.
