My book's firewire port was recognized by a cardbus adapter (I-O gear), but a firewire express card (Startech-2 port ) did not recognize the drive. Any suggestions?

This was my 3rd WD drive. First failed after 1 year becuse I plugged in my printer power cord into it. O.K. My falt, but the drive should have an internal fuze for power surges. The second only lasted 7 months and just stopped working for no reasion, I lost half my OIF pictures from my last deployment. They are gone, and gone for ever as the CD they were backed up on got lost in a box in my last move. The 3rd never worked out of the box at all. I will never buy WD ever again.

All these drives seem to eventually fail. For the money I saved no I have to pay for data recovery.

The drive worked flawless for 7 months then started to die. First the USB interface started getting errors then completely failed. I switched to the eSATA connection to get my data off which I was able to then it started to give me problems as well. I was very lucky to recover my data off this drive. It's still under warranty so I will get a new one, however I am forever skeptical about their external Mybook series drives. I have always owned Western Digital hard drives and they have never let me down and have always given me countless years of use. I recommend staying away from the mybook series hard drives until WD gets some of these flaws worked out. Their internal hard drives are excellent and have never failed me. Better luck next time.

Like other reviewers, I had sporadic, and then slow, success with the firewire connection. USB was more dependable but with Leopard far from a sure thing. The drive would generally do all right if it shut down and started with my iMac. But there are frequent times when a connector loosens in a hub, causing communication to be disrupted. Unlike other devices, this one can't simply be plugged back in to re-establish a connection. You have to do a time-consuming restart to coax it to reappear on your desk-top, in the meantime amusing yourself with the flickering blue light of its iris-shaped "on" button. When I see all of the negative reviews for drives--from external storage drives to DVD players--I'm about to establish a company that uses nothing but magnetic tape reels. If operations like Library of Congress, NASA and the CIA are dependent on information stored on computer hard drives, heaven help us. It's a good thing that most of us who keep trying out new drives really don't have anything that's all that essential to save. I can replace an MP3 collection anytime. As for the photos and movies, who's got time to watch them? I'm too busy replacing hard drives.

This Western Digital 250 GB external hard drive is probably the best purchase I've made in several years. My 32 GB hard drive had filled up long ago, and it seemed I was waging a daily battle to free up enough room to add any kind of file or program. Now, those days are in the past. I've been saving things left and right on this drive for almost four months now, and it has yet to give me a single problem. Unless you need to use this as a portable hard drive, you can almost forget it's even there after you hook it up and install it. It comes on as soon as you boot up your computer, and it shuts itself down whenever you shut your computer down. (You can also shut the drive down manually whenever you want to.) Once it's in place, you never even have to touch it again.Getting the drive up and going for the first time couldn't be easier. You'll want to use a USB 2.0 port to get the best speed and performance, but basically all you have to do is plug it in and let your computer recognize it. It comes with its own AC adapter, so you don't even have to worry about adding any more to the load your PC's power supply is already supporting. The only thing you have to do yourself is to reformat the drive as NTFS (it comes formatted as Fat32 by default) if you want to take full advantage of its huge capacity. If you don't know how to do this yourself, just ask a PC buddy or do a quick Internet search - there's really nothing to it.I worried that this drive might run a little slower than my internal hard drive, in terms of accessing files and folders, but that doesn't seem to be the case at all. I really couldn't be happier with this drive, as it's worked perfectly from Day One. I should note that I'm using a Windows XP machine, so I can't say how well this drive might work with the new Vista OS.

There are numerous external hard drives for sale. I looked at some of them and concluded that WD's My Book is the best choice for me. Using with XP SP2.Pros:1) I believe this is the best-looking external drive out there. I don't buy products solely based on looks, but I do think My Book's case design is elegant. It goes well with my black ThinkPad and I happen to have a USB hub that also glows in blue, so they complement each other well.2) It is a plug-n-play device. It feels to me that WD's engineers worked hard to make the experience as easy as they can think of. The first time I plugged it in to my USB hub, the drive automatically started its initial configuration, which I declined because I already had other backup software and search utility (both included with My Book), but for someone new to computers, I don't know what could be simpler. Everything you need to use My Book with either a Windows machine or a Mac is included.3) It is competitively priced. I went with My Book Premium Edition instead of Essential Edition (cheaper than many other drives with similar capacities) because it has both USB and Firewire connections. I plan to have this drive for a while and maybe I may use it with a Mac in the future.4) I like WDC's support. For example, the included manual has instructions on how to convert from FAT32 to NTFS. Yeah, geeky, but the fact this is included in the manual as well as relevant FAQs on the web site (like restoring My Book's icon in Explorer after you format the drive) sealed the deal for me.5) The best thing about My Book: I do very much like the feature that it turns off itself when the computer is shut down. I cannot find any other external drive that does this. It also has an extra protection built in not to shut it down while the data are being written to the device. That's intelligent and user friendly. It's quiet too.Cons:I read reviews that this drive is slow when writing data. I do not feel that it's slow. Your mileage may vary.All in all, the elegance, price, and WD's support make My Book Premium my choice for an external hard drive!

I bought this drive thinking it was a quality product since I have other Western Digital products. I used this drive about 25 times over the past 16 months. Several months I never used the drive at all. It had about 130GB of data on it when it failed. The drive started having loud clicking sounds. I tried all the Windows, Western Digital and Smart Computing (magazine) knowledge sites, and finally concluded that the drive failed. I just bought a new Seagate drive, plugged it in and it works fine. This Western Digital drive should have lasted longer than 16 months, especially with its light usage.

WD is known for its hard-drives and I think they should stick to just that. I bought this drive about 6 months ago from an online retailer. The drive works slower than a cheaper, unbranded make I invested in earlier but was told by a friend that atleast WD is more reliable.However, just yesterday the drive suddenly was powered off never to be powered again. I tinkered around and noticed that the power supply which has a unbelievably cheap and super thin cord was the culprit! I don't know if they bundle in that adapter with a poor make on purpose or what. But now it seems that I have to shell out $20 to replace it and WD is the only place where I can get it!!So my conclusion is, when buying an external HDD, just go for one with good make. Your hard drive is a very durable component so the box it comes in matters more.

I have had my drive for about three months. Well, yesterday, I had to update my graphics driver, which I did, but then my computer started to "hang" on shut-down and log-in. Initially, I thought, "Stupid NVIDIA!" and spent the better part of the day trying to get some questions answered. Ultimately, I decided to unplug all of my peripherals, including the WD drive, to decrease the load on start-up. I also uninstalled several programs. Turns out the root problems was this external drive. Once it was out of the picture, everything started to operated like it should have been. I don't know what happened to this drive, but my computer won't recognize it anymore, and I've probably lost about $1,000 in downloaded movies, music, and data that I had backed up on it. I'm going to continue trying to get it to operate for at least a few hours so I can transfer my data back (if I ever can), but this drive has really created some high-level headaches for me. I can't say I would recommend it, although a back-up is certainly a smart investment. I've used hundreds of jump drives on my system in the past with no problem. It seems this drive should operate on the same plug-and-play principle. If you want to reduce the stress in your life, look somewhere else for a more reliable back-up drive.

I bought one of these a few months ago. I put a ton of data on it and one day, it just stopped working. I didn't drop it, spill water on it, nothing. It just decided not to work. I hate this hard drive. DO NOT BUY IT!

I liked the form and function of the WD My Book external drive so I had four 500GB drives around in my home network. I used them to back up my home Windows XP computer that I use as a server and as Time Capsule hard drives for some of my Macs. Unfortunately 2 of the 4 500 GB drives are dead, one after starting to make a clicking sound, the second after it was inadvertantly unplugged while accessing the hard drive. All external hard drives can fail, but I am only batting .500. One unit was 1.5 years old, the other was about 5 months old.I've had better success with my La Cie drives.

As my wife and I are avid amateur photographers, we are always looking for additional storage space for our images. This purchase is our second My Book. We have owned the first for over a year now and have no problems to report. So I would suspect the same would apply to this drive. They are simple to install, just plug and play. I have only one gripe with the new drive. On the older drive the large round indicator on the front acted as a power button. The new one does not have this feature. I was very close to returning it (thinking it was broken) until I noticed the instructions state that the drive will "automatically" power down when the computer is turned off. It makes no mention of the power off button. I would prefer that WD give the option to power the drive down manually, thus the 4 stars instead of 5.

Like everyone else, I found the same thing. One day the unit failed to show up in explorer - and that was it. All data lost. Eventually, you're data will be lost too.Tried the "Plug it in to a regular outlet, instead of a power strip" thing - Nothing. The manufacturer (if you search long enough) has another solution -Go spend $200+ an hour with another company to get your data back again. YGBFSM!Short story here is that you can make the drive work again, but all data will be lost. If you have one of these, it will just be a matter of time.

i'm the worst thing that ever happened to any computer because I seriously have computer break down almost about every other month. I've been through 3 computers in the past 3 years and ive lost a lot of information as a result. I bought this as a chrstmas present for myself and backup-ed all my information and 2 days later my computers hard drive crashed and I had to get it replaced. Fortunately I only lost about 2 days worth of information which wasnt anything much at all and I now consider this thing a life saver!I haven't had any problems with it so far, but then I only use it monthly to back up my stuff. However my dad has one too and he's had it for months with no problems. It's quiet and doesnt get hot.It also works fine with Vista and the vista back up wizard so thats def a plus!so far, im satisfied with this product

I own 6 WD My Book External Drives and 2 of the 6 have failed in less than 2 years. If you are storing critical data, find another solution.

I can see why this product had a 1-year warranty. I bought it in February '07, it worked great for a while, then started to fail in March-April '08, and by June '08 is completely dead. If you're going to buy a WD drive, get one with a 3- or 5-year warranty. Or buy a different brand.

Western Digital WDG1U1600 My Book Essential Edition 160GB External Hard DriveI purchased the My Book in 02/07 obviously to add more storageto my PC, but moreover to use for a backup source.I'd read good reviews about Western Digital from several sources,plus it was in my price range. Sold!It worked beautifully from the time I installed it--and I worked ithard! I'm disABLED now, but have found my calling doing work for my Church. Building their first website, working on the logo, etc. is asummary of what I've been mainly working on. Collecting informationalong the way in the form of eBooks, articles, etc. to be referenced later has also been stored.Sadly, I had just finished transferring a lot of that information over to the My Book when I smelled an odd "electrical smell". Panic-stricken, I looked down and the button on the HD was flashing. You probably heard my screams.Noticing that the "Safe to unplug" icon was not on the taskbar, andunable to turn the unit off I had to unplug everything. I tried to get it boot up later, but the computer never recognized it.After reading all of the other similar experiences, all I can say is,"I feel your pain. I reeally feel your pain."

without warning my computer stopped recognizing it. I used it for about 8-9 months. Will never purchase a WD product again ... I am still in shock, and I want to smash this thing against a wall!

The only issue with this drive is the lack of ability to power down when not in use. Disk spins constantly as long as it is on line, no ability to 'sleep'January, 2010 - you guessed it - the electronics in the enclosure died. I was able to remove enclosure and plug the drive into a SATA controller to recover my data. DON'T TRUST ANY USB DRIVE FOR YOUR ONLY COPY.

I believe that this is a good product. Its a good price for a ExHDD, is fairly durable (I dropped it about 2 feet and it still works), and comes with a product warranty. I have had this for about a year now, and its never really let me down.However, my biggest, and only complaint is that the power cord is huge. I know these need their own power source, so its fine, but if you plan on lugging this around with your laptop, you're going to need a larger bag, or a separate one the carry this with it.Overall, I believe that this product is a great buy and it can save you heartache and pain if you ever lose your files.

Just like everyone says, its a peice of junk. My computer dosnt register it half the time and it constintly freezes up. My father has one to and his dosnt work either and my colleges tech guy has had to fix it to get it to work more than 3 times. I cant count how many times Ive lost all my work. Its like I have to buy a secound one to just back up my back up. Dont waste your money please, be smart and go buy something thats not a WD. For what your spending go out and actually read into your product, I didnt and I regret it.

I bought this drive from a local Best Buy today. Got it home and plugged it in to my 3 month old Dell laptop. The drive came up as UNFORMATTED. I got out the user manual (not much there) and it stated the drive is formatted as FAT32 and contained a number of drivers and utilities.I started to format and it said 372GB available when it should have been something around 470GB (for a raw 500G drive). I canceled the format process, cause this was very suspicious for a brand new drive.I opened the drive tools and found out the drive model/type under Windows XP came up as something like:WD 4000GI Googled the drive model and it came up as 400GB !! I then looked at the model number on the case of this drive and it also said something like WDG1U4000 which to me means 400GB drive.So somewhere along the line, Western Digital put an unformatted 400G drive into this box that was supposed to be a 500GB FORMATTED drive. Either that or someone switched the drive (??) in the box and returned it to Best Buy.When I tried to return it 2 hours after I bought it, the store manager at Best Buy gave me the complete runaround and told me that I'd have to deal directly with Western Digital and wouldn't refund my $, saying it's my problem. After arguing with him and BB customer service, the best he would do is a gift card for the $ instead of a complete refund. BB would not honor their return policy as was written right there in big letters saying, "This is an exception to the return policy." My days of buying at BB are pretty much over after being treated like it was my fault. They will be hearing from me.So the bottom line on this particular drive (buyer beware), please check the the drive is indeed a 500G, not a 400G and the model number on the case says something like WD1U5000, not WD1U4000 like mine did. The box did say WDG1SU5000.
