Just had to come and review this drive. I bought this drive on January 9th, 2008 from Amazon. It is now March 1st, 2013 and the drive is still just as good as the day I bought it. Most reliable, solid drive I've ever used. The day it dies (which I know will come eventually) I will be deeply saddened and could only hope to find a new drive half as reliable as this big guy was.

I trusted all of my hard earned Iraq memories onto this device. Without reason, it simply shut down one day. It freezes any laptop you now plug it into, and best buy can't even recover my data. It seems my most cherished memories are forever lost, thanks.

You get smaller faster ones now in the market which are passport size and easy to carry.This is good for home office usage. I used one for a few years and it was easy to use esp the My Book software that helps you backup files easily

I am obviously a sucker for punishment since I bought this drive twice. The first time the first drive failed it fell from the desk so I didn't hold that against the drive at all. The second time .... I still have no idea why it failed. I have to back up everything on this drive a second place somewhere else which then negates the reason I bought this drive in the first place. I no longer buy from Western Digital.

6 yrs after buying it, here's my review.Bulky -- obviously. The smaller drives have gotten cheaper over the years.very good build quality. Have formatted this drive multiple times to FAT32, NTFS, to EXT2 to EXT3 to EXT4 and then back to FAT32.Gave away the drive to my parents who still use it with their desktop.

I could never get this thing up. It runs and lights up. If I needed a noisy night light this would be it. The drivers are worthless. I am severely disappointed.

Purchased this 3 yrs. ago. It comes with no instructions. Backed up my computer but when computer crashed was unable to retrieve info. My son also tried with no success. Not a fan!

Let's face it. This hard drive is obsolete now. If you're looking to get one, you can find much better, faster and smaller ones for less money. But it is worth noting that while I had this drive, it performed admirably.

have gone through 6 of these in 2 years. 2 still work all the others hae died taking critical data with them 2 with less than 6 months on them do not buy this. only rating 1 star because you cant say 0

Mine actually came with 700gb of storage, I bought used and got a great deal. It is a nice size and hasn't been messy at all. It already withstood a nice drop.

I purchased this four years ago and it's still working well. The price I paid was appropriate at the time- I recently purchased a 2TB for the same price. If they are offering it at a reasonable price for a 500GB external hard drive (probably under $99) I can attest to its longevity. I've never had any problems with Western Digital products.

So far, I've had this drive over 5 years now. It works great, haven't had a problem yet. From what I read on the internet, hard drives either crash after the first couple of months or it won't crash at all. I'm looking to buy the 2TB just in case something does happen... after 5 years of data storing and over 10 complete system restores on my computers, everything important is on this hard-drive.People often write negative reviews when things don't work, but since I'm on here looking for a new one, thought I'll write a positive one while I'm at it.

YOU WILL REGRET GIVING WD A TRYWhen I fist got this external hard drive I wanted to test it was no a defective product and filled it out all the 500gb with random files, all worked perfectly.But after 2 years of seldom use and sited on the desktop all the time the partition got damaged (that is what the 3er party tools said) and was not possible to recover the data (unfortunately I didn't had any backup so I used software to recover some of it but it was a total pain), after formatting the drive it randomly failed making Windows to hang and speed transfers of 1mb/s, this problem got solved by itself.Then the drive worked fine for another 6 months and the issue reappeared, not being able to copy the data in it into another drive (I had a backup this time on another non-WesternDigital drive obviously), this time I tried everything but the unit is unusable, I even tried to get it out of the cage and connect it directly to the sata port but the same thing happens.If you want a reliable unit don't buy Western Digital, it does not honor the valuable data their customer might have, I still have an internal 120GB Samsung PATA drive which is like 7 years old and it is still running and hasn't failed ones, I regret giving WD a try.

I bought this for a back-up when it came out in 2006.By today's standards it is relatively small at only 160GB; now you can buy a WD 1 TB, USB 3.0 for a lot less than what I paid for this.However, this one still functions as advertised and over the past six years it has performed flawlessly

I have had two of these so far and both of them have crashed. The first one was under warranty and the company replaced it but i lost everything because they won't pay for recovery. The replacement worked for about 2 years as well but the replacements have a shorter warranty and the 2nd one just crashed. Luckily I didn't fully trust the company after the first one and have been backing up all of my information on a second external hard drive to be extra safe. On the first hard drive I lost 10 years of pictures, and videos that I'll never be able to see again. Find a better company!

This drive is the reason I won't put money into WD drives again. It may have been an enclosure issue, but WD refused to send a new power supply for testing when my drive just wouldn't mount after 6 months. Otherwise it worked fine, and was easy to use. But at the time it was fairly expensive and yet the least expensive available at this capacity. You might be able to pop it into another enclosure to save it, but then why not just buy one from a company with a better reputation for reliability and service?

Like many 1 star purchasers, I purchased this hard drive in hopes of it lasting at least a few years. It didn't make it past one. And this is really hard to believe because I didn't really use it all that much. I just backed up files. Well...one day to my dismay, it just stopped working. I've had problems with hard drives not working, so I took it out of its case, put it in another case and hoped for the best. It still didn't work. Of course by then, the warranty expired. Some of the files on it was irreplaceable. So, I went to see how much it would cost for data recovery. I would have to take out a second mortgage just to have that done. I didn't realize that these hard drives were meant to frustrate people and have them lose their precious memories/files.I also have a nephew who had one that did the same thing - which doesn't surprise me. This is a terrible product. I will recommend it to zero people. I wish I could put zero stars on this...I have a Maxtor that I've had for 10 years and it still works. This one not one year... As the saying goes, you get what you pay for. I got junk. Thanks Western Digital...you suck

I have a MyBook 500 GB that has caused quite a few problems. My VAIO came with USB 2.0 drivers but within minutes of connecting the MyBook, my drivers reverted to 1.0 and I started to receive the "this device can perform faster" messages. Computer performance started to suffer, then it started to lock up when the MyBook was connected. Unplug it and reboot - works great. Plug it in and it locks up, doesn't recognize the drive. Eventually my internal harddrive crashed and when I put a new one in, my USB drivers came back to 2.0. Stay away from this product.

My first drive worked properly through USB for a few months. While it worked, it was typical for an external drive. Though it has a capacity gauge on the front, it didn't work very well and required a system tray program to function at all. To me, the system tray is hallowed ground which should be inhabited by completely necessary programs only, e.g., the virus scanner. If WD wants to put a gauge on the drive, it should work without eating up my RAM and CPU time.Then, I purchased an eSATA to SATA cable so I could use the faster transfer capability of the SATA interface.The first cable didn't work at all.The second cable worked, but after a few days, there were terrible data problems with the drive. Disk Check would run every time I booted up, scan the drive for several hours, and throw out large amounts of data. Of the files that were left, some of them were corrupted and unusable. At this point I sent in a support ticket and received an advance replacement (they send you a new drive, then you send them the old drive in the same box). I didn't attempt to use the eSATA cable with this drive, fearing that the implementation was buggy somehow. I should also note that Western Digital does not pay for the return shipping of the broken drive, which in my opinion is idiotic (I have returned iPods, two Nintendo DS consoles, laptops and monitors to various companies and have NEVER been charged for it). What they offer you is a $1.50 discount off of $7.99 UPS Ground shipping. Ridiculous.After two months, the USB interface in the second drive completely failed. The drive could no longer be recognized in Windows XP or Vista on two different computers. I complained to WD support a second time, requesting that I be sent an internal drive instead, as I have rarely had problems with WD internal drives. They refused to accommodate this and offered an upgrade to the 500 GB My Book Home Edition. Although that model has a FireWire interface (my PC has no FireWire port), is slightly smaller than the Premium ES edition, has a different capacity gauge light, and has slightly updated software, I see no tangible benefit from "upgrading" to it. I am merely hoping that this model does not have the USB connection flaw, and I can see from other reviews here on Amazon that I wasn't the only one with this problem.At first, when the second drive died, I thought it was completely gone, but when I read other comments on this site, I saw that only the USB connection was unusable and the data might still be intact on the drive. So, I tried the eSATA to SATA cable again, and it worked, allowing me to quickly transfer all its data to a second replacement drive. I then deleted everything, not bothering to check if the eSATA use had corrupted the data again. The data on the new drive seems to be OK, but I haven't checked it all yet. I'm hesitant to use the eSATA to SATA cable with it, either.Western Digital was always very responsive to my requests for support, but aside from the previously mentioned return shipping nonsense, their e-mail responses usually take anywhere from one to five days, the first response being automatically generated and useless. Also, their warranty is a year from the original product purchase and is not renewed if you get a replacement, which means that the original drive could have failed anywhere in the first 364 days and I would have been covered, but this new drive only has four months before I'm screwed if it fails.All this trouble combined with the fact that I know others with non-WD external drives that have never failed mean that I will never buy a Western Digital product again. I am crossing my fingers and hoping that I don't have problems with the third drive, but that doesn't mean they won't happen.

I bought this in August 2006 in the 250GB version. It died four years on the very same day on which I bought it. The green light comes on, but following an episode of clicking, my computer didn't recognize it any more. Fortunately, or unfortunately, I purchased three more units at around the same time, so I lost only the one drive, and 100GB of material which I backed up elsewhere, so far. DO NOT JUST BUY ONE, or better yet, buy none and depend upon something else for storage.
