Enough people have written adequate reviews here, so I won't review.I will, however, warn everyone that this drive consumes a relatively massive amount of electricity! Look at the power supply, the little "brick" you plug into the wall. It draws 2.0 amps! Many if not most homes are on 15 amp service.I found out the hard way, and I bet most people having problems here had them due to this issue. (The rest moved or bumped the drive while it was on -- don't do that!!) Just try a different power outlet for the hard drive. I've been a consultant for nearly 20 years and I never thought to try a different outlet for a dinky little external drive. It wouldn't even recognize the drive (but it did power on and Windows did pop up a window about the device not being recognized). I moved it to another outlet as advised by tech support and it worked immediately. It would not surprise me if a lot of the data loss people experienced was due to sporadically inadequate electrical amperage. This is a design flaw, but it is easily remedied, so I rate the product 4 stars. By design flaw, I mean that I don't know why this drive insists on drawing this much power. I have a similar Seagate external drive that draws 1.5 amps. Maybe the drive inside has 5 platters or something like that, which requires more power than less platters? It doesn't really have a flaw other than this.(The fact that it is preformatted in FAT32 is for compatibility with Win98 and Macintosh computers, both of which cannot handle NTFS natively. Many Win98 users cannot really format, even in FAT32, such a large drive. There even is a Western Digital utility to restore the gigantic 500GB single partition because XP and beyond have 32GB as a Microsoft-set limit for FAT32 partitions. Guess what? You can't use the utility on anything but XP and beyond! There literally is no way that I know of to format the drive as 500GB, single partition, FAT32, in Win98. Yet another reason why the drive ships formatted this way.) But if you use XP/Vista, it is EASY for you to reformat it as NTFS. I bought this drive BECAUSE it was preformatted with FAT32, in fact.)

I purchased one of these drives directly from Western Digital in late May. When it arrived and I opened the shrink wrap the drive didn't work. It lit up but my system didn't see it. I emailed Western Digital support on Wednesday and explained exactly the conditions that I had on my system and explained that I had tried it on two other computers as well and that it didn't appear in the Device Manager. On Friday they replied and asked me to check the device manager and try plugging it into another system. They didn't even bother to read my description of the problem. I sent a new message and told them the exact same thing I had in the original report and waited until Monday for a reply, which was "You will need to return the drive." I decided to return the drive for my money back as it could never have been tested at the factory and I didn't feel like going thru the same problem all over again. Western Digital used to be reliable but not anymore. Did I mention that they don't reimburse for shipping?

The "My Book" drive I bought died in 8 months. I've been in the field for over 15 years and that is only the 3rd time I've had a drive quit on me. The big difference is the other drives that went bad were over five years old. I still can't believe how unreliable WD drives are. I have an external Lacie drive that has been running 24/7 for the past two years and is still doing fine.If you value your data, do not trust WD drives. Yes, they're inexpensive, but your time and frustration is worth paying a bit more for a more reliable brand.

First off: I'm a mac person, and the aesthetics of the technology I use matters to me -- don't ask why. I like the look of this hard drive. I had another hard drive that I liked to hide underneath my desk it was so ugly -- but this one sits right up there next to my mac.I bought this mostly as a scratch disk for Final Cut Pro -- and it needs to be fast so as not to slow down rendering and other processes. I've used a few different brands and this one is my favorite (maybe I'm a bit jaded coming out of a bad relationship with a hard drive whose power supply failed after about 6 months, but I like this one a lot better than that one). It runs smoothly and quietly in the background and seems to be as fast or faster than other ones I've used. I know that is not very specific or technical -- but I am the kind of user who doesn't like to be bothered by that kind of thing a lot, I just want something that works for me and this one seems to do the job. I read several reviews of different drives before buying this one, some technical and some not, and was convinced by what I read and by the price that this would do what I needed it to in my price range. It has.

I've had this computer for a year and a half so far to backup my laptop and keep my work files and to keep my music and photos so I hope it never fails! It has worked great and quickly for me all this time. I did have one panic when my computer stopped recognizing when I plugged it in---but this was fixed by unplugging everything and replugging it in again.

The title says it all. Worked flawlessly for 9 months (had it mated with a Tivo series 3), and then failed. The Tivo drive tests say that it is suffering from read errors. The drive warranty is only one year. That says a lot about the product, but fair enough. So, I go to the Western Digital support site and enter the serial number. It says the drive was manufactured in 2006 and I need to provide a purchase receipt to get warranty coverage. A hassle, but again, fair enough. So, I find my Amazon receipt online, save as PDF, upload to Western Digital support site and... nothing. No response except an email saying they have received my message. That was 10 days ago. I again send an email. Again, no response. Perhaps they are trying to wait out the warranty. Anyway, given the hassle, I can't recommend this drive.

It does not deserve any star at the rating. I had two Mybook 500 GB essential, 1 died after a year and 2 months, sent to Ontrack Data Recovery, could not retreive anything at all. The other drive just gave up on me 3 days ago, the drive was about 10 months old, I've called and emailed Western Digital for support, I have not hear anything from them for the past 2 days, their customer support is a nightmare. I need my data back badly.BTW, The drive has only 1 year warranty. I just don't trust all these external drive now aday, they don't last very long, I just use these drive for temp storage, then back them up to DVD instead.I will never never never ever ever ever buy WD drive again.

Like most people these days, I have many many digital music files that I use (legally of course) around the house or on the go. I recently bought a laptop and wanted to move all my music and personal files from my old desktop to an external drive to be used with the laptop. Transferring data from the desktop to the HD was an easy plug and play procedure even with an over-the-hill-about-to-crap-the-bed computer. The hard drive worked seamlessly with both the desktop and the laptop. If your like me and you need to have Dethklok blaring while playing multiplayer Halo 3, then you probably have your mp3's shared over your house's LAN for access with your XBOX 360. (It's legal, look it up). While sharing files from the HD was easy using Windows Media Player, the sound does randomly stop. The music continues to play, but you can no longer hear the music. I'm usually too drunk to care so I haven't done any trouble shooting to see if it's a problem with the HD or my laptop's power saving settings, but I do know my roommate doesn't have the same problem when he shares music directly from his computer's HD. Oh, he has the same model and loves it too so stop reading and start buying! WD has a bunch of other fab products too. Kinda kicking myself for not waiting to get one of the smaller units. If you have any specific questions feel free to email me at uhoops44@hotmail.com though I only check it like once a week so don't expect any quick responses.

I own five WD External drives and have not had any issues with any of them (the oldest is over 5 years old, is connected 24x7x365, and it's still working fine). My most recent two purchases have been a:"Western Digital My Book Essential 500GB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive - 7200rpm"and a"Western Digital My Book 500GB Premium ES Edition Hard Drive - 7200rpm USB 2.0 & eSATA Dual Interface External Hard Drive"The "WD My Book Essential 500GB USB 2.0 Ext HD" - just has a UDB 2.0 connector (no eSATA or Firewire) but it works great and if you shop the sales, the price for 500 GB can be close to $100-140 (summer 2007).The "WD My Book 500GB Premium ES Edition HD" has both a USB 2.0 & eSATA connector on the back (use either one). Note, not many PCs today (2007) have an eSATA port on them. ESATA is faster than USB 2.0, but if you don't have a connector for that externally on your PC, then don't pay extra for it. (You can get after market external eSATA ports for a PC but there are different kinds, and depending on your PC, you need to get the 'right kind' for your PC, assuming you even have room in your PC to add one). Both of these drives came with easy to install instructions - just plug in the power, and then connect them to your PC, and away you go. Both came with USB 2.0 cables. The Premium ES Edition with eSATA did 'NOT' come with an eSATA cable. Both came with their own power cords - nice long ones too.Neither of these two can be connected directly to a network, but if your PCs are part of a home network, or small business type network, as mine are, then I just plug them into one of the main PCs and I put a "share" on the drive so that any PC on my network can access it.If you have important information on your PC, back it up! And if you are like me, previously my backups were stored right next to my PC (not good!) So, now, I use one of these 500 GB drives as the primary backup drive for my PCs, and I keep that right next to one of my PCs. But then weekly, I use the other 500 GB drive to backup the backup drive - and then I keep that one in a fireproof / waterproof safe. You can get these for $30-100, depending on their size, at office stores or online. I like the Sentry line of products.

I bought this drive in January of last year and it stopped responding this month (May). I have had the drive for barely 16 months and it is already useless and all my data is lost unless I can find a way to get the drive to respond. When I sent WD support an email they just said that it is out of warranty and they can do nothing for me. With a failure time of 16 months and a warranty period of 1 year you do not want to spend the money that they ask for this piece of junk. If it was just a few bad sectors then at least I may have been able to recover most of my data but it just stopped working altogether. WD don't give a hoot about their customers and I think that they deliberately choose a short warranty period because their product is rubbish and it would cost them too much to support us. Instead we customers pay the price for trusting them and their slogans that there drives are designed to protect our data. Now there is a lawsuit for misrepresentation just waiting to happen.

I read a lot of reviews and I thank those who came before me for helping me make my purchasing decision. This is not my first ext. hard drive or similar device. Hard drives works similar, with the same purpose to back-up your important files. What makes the different is the back-up program that comes with My Book. I have a couple of WD ext. hard drives without the program. It's a drag-n-drop to back-upI would like to expand and share what another reviewer have said about the type of format for the benefit of those who are not computer savvy. My Book comes with file system FAT 32 which has a limitation to save a single file up to 4GB only, in order to over come that, the hard drive should be formatted to NTFS. To check this out, click on Start, click on My Computer, click on Local Disk (C) and on the left panel under Detail see what file system your computer have. I did the research for you, just follow it. If you have save any files to your My Book, back it up somewhere. Close any open programs. To convert file system FAT or FAT32 to NTFS, do the following: First copy this portion to Words or any similar program and print. It is easier to follow. Click Start, click Control Panel, click Performance and Maintenance, click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Computer Management. Click the plus sign under Storage, click Disk Management. On the right panel under Volume, your computer drives will appear and one of them is My Book. Right-click My Book and click Format. Select the options you want, both is just fine and then click OK. When done, open the WD Backup icon on your desk top. You will be presented to select which folder or files to back-up, when done, click OK. Seat back and relax, it will take a while.Looking to the future, if you have a lot of pictures, music, videos, get the largest hard drive you can afford. With the size of files and programs of today, they will go fast. Whatever gigabyte sizes you choose deduct 20GB and that's the real hard drive capacity. To learn more, read about conversion type base 10 decimal vs. base 2. In closing, the Premium edition is better (two rings) than the standard edition but higher price with extra Google program. That's my personal view.Update: With regard is hard drive capacity, we can called it false advertisement. A good example is we can describe how fast we drove our car over the posted speed limit of 55mph by say I was doing 78, but we left out the fact that it was kilometer per hour. Actually it's 55 mph. One reason they can do this is because whatever conversion they used, the measurement is called bytes. To make it sound non-technical decimal numbering system is used(1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes) but in true computer measurement it's 1 MB = 1,024 kilobytes). Therefore, whatever the hard drive size you have in bytes, divide it by those numbers and one will be smaller. If they use apples as measurement, they should describe it as apple, not orange.

We bought two of these drives 18 months ago. Within 6 months, one was dead - bad drive sectors, 300gigs of data lost, and it wouldn't even let me reformat to try over again. I received good customer service, and a new drive. Three months after the new drive arrived (9 months after purchase), the second original drive died, same problems, data lost. Now, 18 months after we first bought the drives and a year after this new replacement drive was sent, IT dies too! Again, bad sectors, windows fails to write, ALL 300GIGS OF DATA LOST.I bought this drive when Amazon had it available, but I will never buy a Western Digital brand again. After being burned THREE TIMES, I'd be a fool to trust their products!

I used this as my media drive to store my MP3s. After 1.5 years it has failed. I noticed a couple weeks ago that it became sluggish. So I backed up my data to another drive and low and behold today this one failed. Upon power up it would try to spin up but just make loud clicking noises instead. The light stayed on but the drive was unresponsive and not recognized by Vista. This will be the last WD product I purchase.

If I could give a negative review for this I would. The hard drive worked fine up until yesterday when I tried to access it, and couldn't find it in the list! I had no way of accessing the drive. I tried everything - from rebooting my computer, turning the drive on and off, changing usb ports, and plugging it into a wall socket. NOTHING worked! I started google-ing around and found that other people had the same problem, and there wasn't really a solution for it. I even tried calling tech support, but they didn't want to help me unless I paid them $40 since my warranty for the drive was up. Now my only option is to open that sucker up and to put it into a new enclosure. Hopefully that will work or else all my stuff is lost! :(

I currently have an in-house LAN that is connected to two PC's and wanted an external backup capability that would protect data in the event of a hard drive failure. The basic requirement was that the external drive had to have sufficient space to accommodate backup images of both PC's and copies of the My Documents directories from both PC's concurrently. I also wanted an external drive that was capable of supporting either the Windows environment or the Macintosh environment. I ended up purchasing the Western Digital 500GB My Book Essential Edition USB drive. It has been in use for about three weeks now and I have been very pleased with the results.Installation is simple. Plug the drive into an available USB port and power the system up. Backup of both PC's occurs very rapidly via backup software I purchased separately. The drive is extremely quiet and the intelligent power up/down mode of operation is great. (The external drive automatically senses when you power down the PC it is connected to and it powers itself down. It also powers up when the PC is turned on.)Reading other reviews, the only concerns I had before purchase was drives that customers had received that had failed shortly after installation and PC's that had insufficient power to support the external hard drive. Neither of these concerns were problems in my case. I recommend this product to anyone having similar need as mine. Just make sure you have an available USB port and the power to support the drive and you should be happy with the results.

I have three of these: a 320GB Essential (the first one I bought about 2 years ago), a 500GB Premium and (lately) a 750GB Professional. (I avoided the 1TB version due to the universally bad reviews it received). Their different colored lights help me keep my files separate and organized - and always backed up.I have mostly good things to say about all of them: they are stable, silent enough to operate at home and can be formated to either Fat32 or NTFS to suit one's needs. I formated to NTFS before using it (but make sure to back up the contained files and utilities first). My only complain is that when more than half-full, it takes some minutes for my PC to verify all the files contained and be able to use them. Utilizing the FireWire only slightly improves the time delay.Regarding the complains about crashes and data losses: there is of course the possibility of this to happen to any data storage medium. Had I not had a flawless experience with my previous MY BOOKs, these concerns would had prevented me from expanding my...library. However, keep in mind that this is NOT a PORTABLE External HDD. It does not contain a solid-state flash drive, but instead a regular HardDisk Drive. So, moving it from place to place, shaking it (and even carrying it in a backpack) may not be the best way to ensure smooth operation. On this note, can anyone trust any delivery service or company NOT to shake or drop it during shipment?RECOMMENDED!

I purchased this drive back in August and have been using it steadily since then. It's a solid performer! An earlier review pointed out that it came pre-formatted to FAT32 but after copying the included software on the drive to my main drive a quick format to NTFS for larger storage blocks. Honestly, other than the drive monitoring utility not much else included was worth it as I had already installed most of the apps before.Occasionally, after about five minutes of not accessing the drive it will spin down for power conservation. When accessing the drive in this state it takes an extra three or four seconds and then you are up and running so it's not a big deal in my opinion. One thing I have noticed recently as I've approached filling the drive up is a bit more drive noise (which is why I give it four of five stars). I'm guessing this has something to do with how it is accessing stored data. I've not defragged the drive yet so maybe that will help the problem.Another thing that comes up when you unplug the drive from your computer then plug it back in is that you can get a BIOS message stating that the startup drive configuration has changed and a recommendation to go into setup to select the start up order. If you just leave it plugged in all the time, like I do, then that is a non-issue except for when you first plug it in.All in all this is a great drive and I am planning to get a second one.

Our drive worked fine for a little more than a year, then suddenly it could be detected by Windows XP, but no data was accessible. Fortunately we didn't throw it out. Apparently partitions and FATs get corrupted frequently on external HDDs. When that happens, there's usually no physical damage, and data can be recoverable with software. A local store would recover the drive for $30-50, but I downloaded Nucleus Kernel FAT + NTFS for $70, after seeing that the demo version found our data. Nucleus seems to work quite well, although it's not highly user-friendly, and it is SLOW to recover files, including many deleted ones. Still, that's better than losing data and/or the HDD. To extract everything (not including deleted files) from a 500GB drive is at least an all-night proposition. Hard to say whether the fault is with the MyBook or with WXP, or possibly with unplugging or powering down the HDD while transfering files (?) So... don't give up too quickly. Try the free demo Nucleus Kernel to see whether the device is damaged first. Other than this, the MyBook seems to work fine, even though it's not a very speedy drive.

This drive will probably work fine on most windows systems. It did not on mine. (I'm running XP on an older IBM computer, using an accessory Adaptec USB 2.0 IDE card to connect to high-speed USB devices.)Plug-and-Play did not work for this drive. After hours of struggling to make the computer "see" the drive, increasingly frustrated, cursing WD and about to return it, I found a small troubleshooting note buried deep in WD's support web site saying that it was incompatible with certain Adaptec USB cards. Naturally mine was one of them. Oh, well hey -- they should have put that on a bright red warning label on the outside of the box.I ended up installing an additional USB 2.0 card (IOGear brand, thank you) that I needed anyway, and then the WD hard drive worked fine immediately. If you're using an eSATA connection you shouldn't have this problem, but I haven't tried it.The drive has a low, resonant hum when it's on, always there but not too annoying. The circular blue lights on the front swirl around when the drive is being accessed, cute but unnecessary... a standard little blinking LED would do fine. The button on the front is *not* an on/off button (What is it with drive manufacturers who don't put on/off buttons on their hardware? Would that be so hard?) In fact, when your press the button the blue lights just swirl around some more and then come back on, nothing seems to change. Even though it's supposed to be a "safe power-down" button, apparently you have to have the proprietary driver installed to get it to work. Likewise, the inner concentric ring is supposed to show disk usage percentage, but doesn't without the driver. The drive is not smart enough to do these things on its own. I am against adding anything silly and unnecessary to my system so I haven't installed that driver or the free backup software that came with it.Note to Western Digital: Very pretty, very clever. But in the future perhaps skip the cleverness, go with simple and functional, and make sure your hardware is compatible. I have two other external hard drives, a Maxtor and a SimpleTech, not to mention a half dozen other USB devices, and they all work fine with the Adaptec USB2.0 IDE card. Do you think I'm going to buy another WD hard drive? NOT.

I've now had the My Book for over a month and thought I would add my review to the others. People seem to be having some quite different experiences with this. Mine has been consistently positive. Some complain about the noise. Mine makes virtually no noise. Perhaps this is because of the way I use it. I use the My Book exclusively for data storage. I put photos, camcorder videos, and music files on it. I have not installed any programs on it and never will. I suspect that some of those who have problems with it making noise have made the mistake of installing programs onto it. If you use it only for storage, it should make very little noise. Running programs off it would also cause it to run hotter and wear out more quickly. I have two cats and so am also concerned with the effect their fur could have on it. So I would never consider it for anything other than storage. All in all, I couldn't be happier with this. You get a huge amount of storage for very little cash outlay. Used properly (i.e., for storage only, not to run programs) I expect this to be with me for quite some time to come. But I also am using them only for back up. I have all the same data on an internal hard drive. It is the only smart way to go.

I did a google on it and found that I was not alone. Lot's of people having same problems. Called western digital tech support and they confirmed that Mybook is having this problem! They also suggested to remove drive from enclosure and use it as stand alone. I did that but the problem was still there. I reformat the drive and it works for now, but lost all the data. So here is the lesson for the rest of you do not rely on the backups 100%, especially by western digital.

If this type of failure is common, then I really have no desire for a 1TB drive or higher... at least not until solid state becomes an affordable reality.
