Great external hard drive that serves it purpose and hasn't failed me yet (knock on wood). I purchased two of these (one to back up music and the other for photos) back in 2007 and they still work great and have plenty of space left to use!!

This review is long but you can scroll to the bottom of it for the main point:-)I have one of these drives, my model# is WD5000C032-002 it looks exactly like the one in the picture. It has two ports on the back, one for a USB plug and one for the plug in DC power adapter that came with it. I purchased it from Target at a surprisingly low price (this is how WD catches you). Previously I had 2 western digital internal EIDE drives(The Caviar WD400 - only 40 Gigabytes though ) they had outstanding performance, my wife had dropped one on the floor and it survived. Then I bought a WD 320 Gigabyte internal EIDE drive from Circuit City - no problems to this day. The reliability and reputation of this company prompted me to choose their products every time and without disappointment until....One day I bought the drive we are talking about here, the "My Book Essential Edition 500GB". It seemed to work okay at first then after a month the following things happened in this order:-The drive started taking longer to appear in windows when plugged in.-The drive kept powering down constantly (light still on), even while in use which caused an MP3 or video playing to get stuck while it powers up again.-The drive started to make strange ticking noises and squealing noises at random times during the day & night.-The drive sometimes had to be unplugged from AC power then plugged back in because it refused to start up when connected to the computer's USB port (meaning the drive would not "wake up").-The drive letter (in windows) would all of a sudden disappear from windows explorer, then it would reappear with no drive size or name under the "my computer" folder. When I clicked on the drive's icon I would get this message: "The drive in E:\ is not formatted would you like to format it now?", even though the drive was already formatted & had data on itI have read on other websites that people have tried removing the drive from its enclosure and puting it inside a desktop computer which fixed the problem. Some have even purchased their own enclosures(usb drive cases) and have had success. It's obvious that the electronic circuit board used in Western Digital's external "USB", "Firewire" and "eSATA" drive enclosures are the problem.I would stay away from WD external drives unless you plan on getting a new enclosure for each drive you buy. Only this idea would actually offset your savings on the sale price.

I've had this HDD for about 3.5 years now, and have had no problems with it at all. It's durable (I've been carrying it around it backpacks and riding bicycles with it, etc.), reliable, and reasonably fast for data transfer to/from another drive (although moving files on the drive itself is a bit slow). There are of course, larger faster smaller drives out there, but this one is a good bargain -- if this one meets your requirements, I think you'll be satisfied for the price.

This letter of complaint is to identify both the technical and administrative issues at Western Digital's customer service.A Western Digital (WD) 500GB MyBook External Hard Drive, serial # WCAPW 4211705, was purchased in December 2007 and was opened in January. Between January and April 2008, almost 200GB of personal and work confidential information were stored in this hard drive. In the end of March 2008, the hard drive became dysfunctional; every time when the power line is plugged into the hard drive, there will be an irregular buzzing noise from inside the protective case. Since then the G drive (designated for Western Digital 500GB MyBook) stopped popping out on any computer screen. There was no prior symptom of how and why this hard drive would become dysfunctional. The WD customer service was contacted on May 1, 2008. The customer service representative, named Akshy, stated that the only two options for fixing the problem are (1) contact outside data recovery service companies that are contracted with WD and (2) receive a "clean" replacement, meaning nothing pre-stored inside the hard drive, from WD. However, it was found out that, although these data recovery service companies are associated with WD, the service still costs from $900 to $1,500, depending on the size of data being recovered. It is unfair for customers who are innocent and do not know what goes wrong with their brand-new WD hard drives to pay for repairing the manufacture defects. A replacement can be easily done with simple shipping and receiving methods, but data recovery, again due to manufacture defects, costs plenty of customers' money as well as time. Now, a strong recommendation is given to WD as the following: This product should be labeled "Warning: NOT for Confidential Information Storage".If customers choose the first option given by the WD customer service representative, there is no way customers can ensure that their confidential information that was stored in the defected hard drive was not released to the public or, in worst case, terrorists and be used as part of the terrorists' attacks.Unless WD can 100% guarantee its hard drives' quality, customers should not take their risks of having their private and/or work confidential information landing in others' hands. If this worst case does occur, WD can possibly face law suits and be liable for not only customers' monetary losses but also WD's reputation. For WD's best interest, I strongly recommend WD to cover my entire cost of data recovery from the 500GB MyBook External Hard Drive due to manufacture defect(s).

First of all, it takes forever, for any computer (doesnt matter on my pc or laptop -> not a computer issue) to show "mybook" under the MYCOMPUTER menu. Starts up very very slow. After 1 year, it started to give me errors and nothing went on it or off the harddrive. Now, I am sitting on this darn thing, and try to reformat it, maybe it will fix it, but I am pretty sure, that as soon as my husband finds out, that I am wasting my whole night on this thing, he is just gonna grab this Mybook-thing and throws it out the window. With those words, you can tell : I HATE IT and cant wait to buy me a new one, but surely it wont be WD Mybook again.I just cry for all my data's that are on this thing.

I have been using this as a backup drive for a couple of years. It is not the fastest thing I have ever encountered, but it has proven reliable. Of note, it just sits in one place and is not moved around much, so I can't comment on how it stands up to abuse. When I say it is slow, what I mean is that it seems to spin down when not in use and - when being accessed for the first time in a few hours - it can take 10-15 seconds to respond. Once it "wakes up" the speed seems the same as any internal drive. Also, it is quiet.I wish it could just get power from USB and not require a power brick and that it had network ability, but that is really a different product.

The minor quirks are not even a consideration to give this item a bad review. Let me first say that I have 10 of the Western Digital Hard-Drives. From the 320 to the 260. USB to firewire. I find the USB to be my favorite type since it starts up and shuts off along with my PC perfectly. Plug n Play as stated also. I do an extensive amount of high bit-rate video editing. Very labor intensive. And with all of the sources I acquire segments from it was quite impossible for my c drive to hold it all. So I researched these hard-drives, loved the look most of all and made up my mind. So much so that I even got my mother to get one for her valuable files. This was about 4 years ago. Thru that time period I bought extra units as needed. Never had any problems with them. In fact I had 8 units daisy-chained for a great while there with no problems in producing DV video. Only the one that I hammered with continues playtime that it finally gave the "click of death". Apparently not meant for extensive access as with very intense video editing. But quite honestly, several of my units only hold video, music and pictures these days. Only used for permanent archives and not for editing anymore. But for those way to hasty, be forewarned even though I've been fighting with the problem unit, now you see it now you don't, I left mine unplugged for a day and then reconnected it I was pleasantly surprized to find it on my c-drive and with no clicks. Needless to say I bought one more WD and I was able to salvage all of the files I had stored there. So don't give the thumbs down until you double check this unit, you may be surprized to find a breath of life still left in her. It could save you tons of grief and lots of money. Quite frankly I was more stubborn than the device was. And since I trouble-shoot Philips products for a living, I know that the device is not always the culprit. With all of the third party software on computers these days, the different operating systems, the firewall and security protocols, popup blockers and adware software and the regular way it's user configures his or her system it is quite difficult to accurately predict how any unit will perform. In my case I've had great luck with Western Digital. The failed unit is out of warranty and quite frankly I will be performing an autopsy quite soon. Just to see if the hard-drive can be internally installed on my PC just in case failure were to strike again. But still 10 units which as I said are not connected to my pc simply there holding my valuable movies, music and pictures for posterity. Every so often I access them for a quick check that all is well. And a back of a back up? YES by all means....because.."I'm sorry" just doesn't cut it with your precious memories. But expecting perfection from any product doesn't make much sense to this trouble-shooter.

I am a DJ that also does a good deal of traveling from gig to gig and goodness, I don't know HOW many times my WD external drive has been banged around in my travel bag, dropped on hard floors, and suffered innumerable power surges/outages and the thing just hasn't DIED! (NOT Complaining!) I guess I just might be one of the lucky ones that has a tough little external drive.Setting up the myBook is pretty intuitive, anyone that is moderately tech saavy won't have a problem figuring out how to get their myBook to work with their computer. I purchased this version because of the price and amount of space that I pretty much needed to save all my music. I have been able to work with this while DJing live very comfortably. It is fast, reliable, and has taken one hell of a beating in the 2 years that I have owned it and it works as good as the first day I bought it.I will close this to say that I am a VERY happy customer and if my WD ever does keel over, I won't hesitate to buy another.(And, I'm eyeballing the Western Digital My Passport Essential 500 GB USB 2.0 Portable Hard Drive WDME5000TN (Midnight Black) and planning on getting it anyway...can't go wrong with backing up your files ^^)

I bought the Western Digital 500GB My Book Essential Edition because my 250 GB Acomdata external hard drive was 65% full, I wanted to get still more files off my computer, and I want to have duplicate copies of all files in at least two different locations in case one of the drives should fail (all hard drives can fail).I do not leave my external drive running all the time; in fact I do not even leave the USB cable plugged in unless I am going to use it; I turn the drive on only when I want to copy files to it. I therefore wanted a drive that is hot-pluggable (i.e. can be turned on and off while the computer is running) and I wanted an on/off switch on the drive. Although my new WD drive does not have an on/off switch (the large button in the middle is NOT an on/off switch on my unit), I find that it really does not need one. I power up my computer and all its accessories with a power strip; if the USB cable is unplugged when I power up, the WD briefly turns on, sees that it is not connected, and turns off. When I want to use it, I plug the USB cable into the computer and it turns on automatically. When I am finished using it, I right click the external hard drive icon in my system tray, select "safely remove hardware", tell it to stop, and it then turns off automatically. This behavior is equivalent to having an on/off switch.Since other users have said that the WD drive runs hot, I left mine turned on for a few hours to see how hot it would get. Mine gets slightly warm but certainly not hot. Some reviewers have said that WD drives are slow. When I first began transferring files to mine I was getting transfer rates of 18 to 20 MBps for most of them; this is about the same as I got for my 250 GB AcomData before I began to fill it up. However, there were a few files that transferred at 1 or 2 MBps; I assume that these files are scattered across the internal drive on my computer, and the transfer rate was slowed by the seek time. As a test, I picked one of the slow files, 716 MB, and transferred it to the WD and then to my 250 GB AcomData (which is currently 65% full). Transfer to the AcomData took 294 sec (about 2.44 MBps) and transfer to the WD took 374 sec (1.91 MBps). This suggests that the WD is about 25% slower than the AcomData. I do not know what the WD performance will be like when it starts to get full, but this does indicate that its reputation for being slow is not undeserved.I followed the suggestion of another user and removed the junk software that came preinstalled on the drive before using it; I copied the junk files to a CD in case I might want them in the future (not likely). The junk software included autorun files (which I hate), Adobe Acrobat, Google toolbar, Picasa etc.Overall I am happy with the drive, it is hot pluggable, transfer between my two external drives is quick and easy (I use edit/copy & edit/paste rather than drag & drop), I can leave it running for several hours without overheating, it is inexpensive (especially on sale) because it is USB only and does not come with backup software which I do not need, and it is fairly small (only a tiny bit larger than my 250 GB AcomData). Although it is a bit slower than my AcomData, the difference in speed is not important for my applications.

I purchased this unit for my iMac G5 over a year ago. It had a good price, and good amount of storage space so I thought this would be a good solution for my backups. Ever since I got it I've only been able to back up my data about 3 times. It seems to work fine at first, but then it freezes, crashes my computer (makes it restart) and then the drive locks out of my computer and it's not recognized anymore. I try unplugging, plugging it back, nothing. I wait a few months and it works again, only to end up the same way. Every now and then it will work fine but it's like a game of chance with this thing. I wouldn't recommend this unit at all.

A testament to the longevity of the hard drive Western Digital put inside this drive. 3 Years of pretty solid hard use, and the drive still works. Unfortunately, I can't say the same for the case or electronics. Last night the drive quit working after booting up my computer. No coaxing would bring the drive back, front light worked, no drive spin up.If you google disassemble WD 500Gb My Book, you'll find an instructions on how to remove this case. It's not hard to do, just tricky. Remove the paint or sticker over the screw on the side of the case, press in two tabs at the top and bottom, and the cover slides off (with a lot of coaxing).Once I had the case open, it was pretty simple to free the WD Caviar drive from the housing. These are SATA drives. Open the computer case, connect power and the SATA cable, a brief driver self install, a reboot, and this drive has a second life as an internal drive.I fully expect that this drive will last a good long time internally. Simple surgery and the drive has a whole new life.By the way, this is actually a pretty noisy external drive. Although there is no fan, the drive makes a pretty decent noise while spun up. The reason you recognize it, after around 10 minutes if you don't use the drive, you hear a click, and a whining wind down noise. These were decent drives at the time. The newer models are way less expensive.

I just want to write and let the world know what kind of company this is. I have owned 3 Western digital (WD) hard drives. All 3 have not lasted longer then 2 years, the most recent has only lasted 1 yr.. 4 months. But the kicker of this situation is the external hard drive WD make have a warranty of 1 year. but the internal Hard drives that are inside the units have a 3-5 year warranty. So I called WD because the hard drive inside the case went bad. So this is how the call went. The phone rang, and I got contacted to someone over sea's and could barely speak english. I told him my problem and he said sorry it's out of warranty and there is nothing he could do. So i said the hard drive inside the unit has a 3 year warranty. he said well you bought the external hard drive so you only get a 1 year warranty. I was going no where with him so I asked to speak to a manager. Mind you it's bad enough I lost all my info, but now I couldn't get a replacement. so the manager comes on and says there is nothing he can do. I said to him because I buy the complete package the WD makes I get punished. and if i went out and bought a internal hard drive and put it in a case i'd get a 3-5 year warranty? he responded back, yea. I said dont you think this is a little unfair? and he said sorry. So then trying to be slick I said ok so what if I take the Hard drive out will i get the 3-5 year warranty? he said no you'll void the warranty because they marry the case and the hard drive as 1 unit so they know the hard drive came out of it. But his way of solving the situation he said is they offer a service to recover the data, I asked how much does that cost. he said about $3k. I asked to talk to his manager and he sad it would take 48 hours for them to call me back. (still waiting) Long story short, if you are interested in buying a western digital I recommend buying a internal hard drive and putting it in a case which are very cheap. Just search external hard drive case, and tons will pop up. by doing this you'll get a real warranty. I hope this helps others from getting screwed. Good luck

I had this drive connected for months without any issues. I backed up over 200GB of information from my XP desktop to this drive. I Added this to a Belkin USB network hub to give my girlfriend access to back up her XP laptop. She also had no issues using the drive through the USB hub. I purchased a new Vista Ultimate laptop and tried to access the drive and it would see the drive and allow me to explore the drive, but once I start moving/copying/using any files, it locks up my new Vista PC. Western Digital tells me that this needs to be reformatted for Vista. They confirmed that my GFs XP laptop would be fine with the new format.I proceeded to move all the information off the MyBook to the old XP PC and to USB keys to empty the drive. I reformatted with the Vista laptop and moved everything back onto the MyBook. Now, neither the Vista laptop nor the XP laptop or the XP desktop can view the drive without locking up. I now have data on a drive that I cannot access. WD gave me the info free of charge 3 weeks ago, but now they are telling me that I need to PAY for their tech support to solve a problem for a solution that they gave me.Paying for tech support is beyond offensive. This is not a broken, this is a tech support issue. If you can't support your hardware, you don't deserve any customers; and you've lost one here.

I have bought drives for military and corporate accounts since Windows 3.0 was the "New Thing". I bought my MYBOOK Essential 320GB drive about eight months ago, and it worked fine until a month ago. The power cord was the first issue. I replaced it...and lo and behold...ALL OF MY DATA WAS LOST!! The drive kept defaulting me to reformat it, saying there was nothing on the drive. Zip, Zilch, Nada, ZERO...!! What's worse is that, like others have reported, it only shows 298GB at full capacity...NOT the 320GB it advertises. For us Old School cats, that's a lot of lost storage. Where did it go? Please don't tell me its a swap file incorporated into the specs of the drive! False advertising is what I call it.Jazz

I bought 2 of these in late 2006 to replace a 300GB Western Digital external drive that had crashed. I figured if I got 2 of these I would have some redundancy in case one failed. Within 2 years or so, both of these drives did indeed fail. While I did not lose any super important files because I was paranoid and had all my financial records and pictures backed up in multiple places, I was stung both times when these things crashed, as you almost always have at least a few files that have not been backed up yet when the you-know-what hits the fan. Well, I expected more than 2 years of life from these things, so I am very disappointed. One started making strange noises that provided semi-ample notice that something was about to go wrong, while the other one was ostensibly working fine and was suddenly toast one day. Suffice to say I've had enough fun with Western Digital and will be purchasing my drives from other manufacturers in the future.

I bought the WD "My Book" external hard drive because it was on sale and it had SO MUCH memory. I didn't expect the thing to go buggy on me right away. The first thing WD's "My Book" did was to "drop" itself from my PC. It was always wandering off somewhere where my OS couldn't find it. I kept on having to disconnect it and connect it just to use it. The drive has decided - after these many weeks of losing itself in the ether - to stick around. How long will it stay? That's impossible to say."My Book" (when its working) is noisy. It's as if the drive wants to be a turbojet when it grows up. It does get quiet between its tantrums, however, which is, I suppose, a redeeming quality. In addition, "My Book" has a nasty tendency to embed itself so deeply into the inner workings its host PC that the user can hardly do anything without it "spinning up." Even surfing the net can be negatively impacted by "My Book." Files are often directed without the user's volition or knowledge to this blue-eyed cyclops. Considering the data retrieval times associated with the drive, depositing critical files in the beastie is not a good thing.WD's "My Book" can be best described as a noisy vampiric tumor. It invades its PC host and degrades its performance. Still want all that memory?
