First of all I could not get data to transfer. Uses a program called Acronis to backup. It never worked, not even once. I bought it from the person who set up my computer right before he left on an extended trip to Korea so I couldn't return it. His advice to me was to transfer data manually (drag and drop) which seemed to work okay but was highly impractical and very slow.Then my computer stopped recognizing it so I can't even do that any more, much less retrieve what I put on there. Basically it was a total waste of time and money. It should not be that hard to make an external hard drive type product to store data in. Manufacturers should be ashamed of themselves for cutting too many corners and not giving us a reliable product. If I could I would give it 0 stars.

I wish I read the reviews before... With data you really want function over form!I generally don't make a habit of leaving reviews. However, I was so disappointed with this product that I was motivated to do this. In any case, look at the distribution of the reviews. On one side, a of people love it and give it 5 stars (113 at the time of this writing). *However*, a lot of people hate it (72 at the time of this writing). Well, add me to the latter. My WD MyBook crapped out after a few months (less than 4). I haven't contacted WD, I'm going to take it to a Memory Recovering place, and that'll be the end of it (along with my desire of buying future WD products). Don't say you weren't warned (73 people have taken the time to put it in writing, don't be #74).Cheers,-FZ

Worked fine for about a year, then just started acting funny, made lots of noises (technical speak for us not techies). Luckily I backed it up to the hard drive (we had been using it as a shared drive). Now back to the drawing board. Maybe a different manufacturer this time.

I got this hard drive after I had filled up my 320GB MyBook. I was very impressed with my 320GB drive, so when I needed a new one, there was no doubt which brand I'd be buying. I did have a small problem however. After I'd added about 50GBs to this drive, and tried to add more, it started telling me there was no space available. I was able to fix the problem by moving everything back off the drive, formatting the drive, and then moving it back. After that I've had no problem thus far. Looks really nice sitting right next to my 320GB drive. I really like the fact they stand up so nice next to each other. I do leave about half an inch, to an inch of space between them to prevent any excessive heat. One of the best features about these drives is the fact they turn themselves off after 10 minutes of inactivity. They probably aren't the only drives to do this, as I'm sure many companies have followed suit, but still a nice feature to have. I definitely suggest this hard drive to anyone on the market for an external hard drive, who need this much storage. Very pleased with the shipping from amazon. Very speedy delivery, and nicely packaged.

Died after 10 monthsUsed on a Vista OS.Also had to often unplug and replug it in to get my computer to see it.All to often it just wasn't there.That is you couldn't find it in windows Explorer.So person isn't going to send it back to the manufacterer with your data on it.Bought another from another manufacturer hoping to have better luck.

THAT SHOULD BE ONE STAR--AND IF POSSIBLE I WOULD GIVE IT NO STARS AT ALL. DO NOT BUY THIS DRIVE! I just experienced my second failure in just over 13 months. On the bright side, the return process was easy for the one that was still in warranty, but the data was still lost. As for the one that just went out of warranty and then failed... the data is lost AND I am out several hundred dollars. We hardly put these drives through any hard test. I own two. Both are connected via USB, as the firewire was a bit unreliable. They worked fine when they worked. All they did is sit stationary in a clean envinroment--and two of them "broke." Buy at own risk.

The Western Digital MyBook drives really fail. A lot.Customer Service tries to be helpful but there's not much they can do.Take backups often.

I bought this drive and it taught me a lesson. I planned to use it with my laptop but since the drive needs it's own power supply it's not very mobile. I should've gotten a USB powered drive instead. If you want more storage space for your home, just buy an internal and have your kid install it. Also, WD's SATA enclosures are terrible. They bend the SATA cable at 90 degrees which causes guaranteed failure. So if you have one of these and it no longer works, take the HDD out of the enclosure and put it in your PC. You should be able to get your data. (Doing that will probably void your warranty)

I had two ebooks fail on me for two different locations. Both stopped being recognized after a year. The WD diagnostics comes up with "too many bad sectors". I have trused this "back-up" and put everything I have. I am sick to my stomach that I need to figure out a way to retrieve all the data. This product is a total garbage.

Do NOT buy this drive. Western Digital My Book is unreliable. I've had two of these drives, and they both died after a few months of very light use. In both cases, the drive suddenly started making the infamous clicking sound of death, and all the data was lost.

This drive has some great features like dual interface and auto power down. It worked as soon as I plugged it in (USB) and worked for just over 11 months before it died. I found that it would work for a few minutes after being powered up and then fail. I was able to erase it and WD sent a new one. I paid to send back the old one but they have a deal with UPS that saves a little over a buck. The new one didn't work at all. I just sent it back and they are sending another. It was great while it worked and they did make warranty replacement easy but the quality is not what I expect from WD. With the new drive I'll have only a 30 warranty.

I have a 500gig Essential that died after 15 months. I had no idea when I bought it that this only has a one year warranty. I've never heard of ANY harddrive with less than three years. With only one year, this is absolutely not worth the money. I've bought a number of Western Digital drives and have found them to be less and less reliable. As it turns out, this will be my last!!

Purchased item with no problem and it has been working for less than a year perfectly! However, I am a bit annoyed that it is not really 500 GB, but rather 465GB which is a big difference!! If it had been off 500MB to 1GB I wouldn't complain, but 35GB is how much memory some NEW computers come with. And now that I read all these bad reviews, I am very nervous about losing my information.

I bought this external drive about a week ago and I haven't tested until yesterday and I'm impressed about it. I read almost all the reviews, specifications, pros and cons before buy it, and I was tempted to buy a seagate external drive, but after all I'm satisfied about this one.Firs of all, I didn't have any troubles for installation. You have to only plug the AC adapter and the USB cable and windows recognize the drive. The software that comes with the drive is optional for you to install it. It doesn't improve the performance neither make it slow so it's up to you install ir or not.The drive is very quietly y silent when you are working with it. You only see the green light that shows you that is in action even if you transfer a lot of information at once.The main problem with the drive is that comes pre-formated in FAT32 and if you plan to use it with Windows 2000 or higher, have it in NTFS is mandatory. I took me about 2 and a half hours to format it, of course my PC doesn't have an ultimate generation processor, but it's time that you lose before use your new drive.Every hard drive, external or internal, eventually fail, so I consider the best thing to do with this kind of drives is for backup and don't depend on it for your favorites applications and extremely importat information. Keep it cool, turn it of when you are not using it and you will extend its life and keep your data safe.

Over the years I have purchased 3 external hard drives from Western Digital, which I thought to be a reliable company.Unfortunately two of the drives have crashed almost exactly 2 years after I have purchased them, and Western Digital only offers a one year warranty, meaning they will not replace your defective product. I would advise others to stay away from this company, I've wasted a lot of time, money, and lost a lot of data dealing with them.This 250GB Mybook drive is the second that I have purchased which crashed on me, the first being the 500GB Mybook.

Although the drive access is loud, this drive is a solid performer. As such, I have made this the standard external hard drive in my house. I will purchase several more for archive purposes.

I have two of the 750 gB versions. All of the sudden accessing my files is extremely slow. In a panic I transfered my files off the first one and thought I was safe. Now my 2nd one is doing the same thing.

The amazon rating on this item is very wrong, so I feel I must put my 2 cents in. I bought this drive from a local store and brought it home to copy about 120GB of data to. I though I had a great buy at $129, so I hooked it up and started to transfer files. After less than an hour it stopped working and errors told me the drive needed to be formatted. Upon restart I could access the drive again so I tried again but after a few minutes it decided it wanted to be formatted again. Tried multiple times like that and then decided to go for the reformat. Guess what, the format failed. After reading similar bad reviews and horror stories about WD's Customer service, I wont even call them. This one will be going back. Thank goodness, I found out what a piece of junk it was before the return period expired and before I put data that I would not retieved on it. WD let me down on this one, I have an internal drive I installed myself a couple of years ago thats been great, but I'll find a different option for external storage.

The upright design of this thing was a big mistake, especially since the thing is so fragile. I had it sitting upright, and it inevitably got bumped and tipped over on its side. That was the end of hundreds of gigs of very important files.I was shocked that it broke so easily! It wasn't like I abused the thing, and it sounds like I'm not the first person to tip this unstable thing over. It did such a great job of completely breaking that even though it turns on, it makes a loud clanking noise and can't be read at all.I'm very sad and will be looking into more reliable options.

I used this drive for a year, it started to give strange clicking noise after using it for 3+ months. I called in the WD support and they informed that it is normal. Now as it just completed 1 year of life, it just died one day. I called up WD support and informed them and they told the drive has gone out of service as it is just over a year and will change per incident I raise to them. Then I took it to Geek squad in Best Buy and asked them to help, they tried but the drive was dead and requires something around $2K for a third party data recovery, which may or may not be possible depending on the internal condition of the magnetic discs. I lost all files, photos and videos. It is now junk for me.

This drive worked well for me for a little over a year, granted and for your consideration, I used it very little and used it only as a source of backing up information instead of day-to-day tasks that could have potentially caused the drive to fail at a quicker rate. Approximately a year after originally purchasing this item I had gone to access my backup files after having a theft occur on one of my other sources of backup gear, drives, etc.. Unfortunately, while attempting to copying the files from this drive to my primary computer, it had an error and has since yet to be recognized by any of the multiple computer systems I've attached it to, I've contacted western digital regarding the matter, it's been about 3 weeks; I'm sure they'll get around to my concerns; sooner or later ... or later.... Overall, this drive is USB only, so it'll be slower than other drives available, not necessarily a bad thing but the fact this failed so easily, with such little use, leads me to suggest you avoid this product like the plague and invest your time, more so money, into a product that can give you a better end result.

I purchased this hard drive at Staples after a co-worker bought one (he loves it).First Drive I purchased: Plugged it in, reformatted to NTFS and did an Error-Check which came back perfect. Soon as I started copying data over the drive deleted my data right after copying giving me "Mysong.mp3 not found." ???? The drive then started disappearing and reappearing. I went to the Disk Manager (XP Control Panel --> Admin Tools --> Computer Management) and saw that the disk was unreadable and reappearing as a 32MB drive. After a second format and having the same results - I decided to returned the drive. Staples took it without question and gave me a new one.Second Drive: Formatted to NTFS again and started copying my data over. No data problems and the drive has 20+GB on it. The drive is going strong and acting 100% normal.My Review: A+ external drive. Extremely quiet - I cannot hear it over my computer's CPU fans - even while transferring data. The drive is extremely light making it a plus because I'll be hauling this to work everyday. The My Book is VERY cool to the touch (unlike my other 300GB external drive I put together with an external kit). The green light in front lets you know when data is being transferred (it isn't a button).Specs:Has 465GB of usable space (Fat32 format).Give Windows XP about 35 seconds to discover the drive when you first plug it in.Don't install the software - just choose: No Action and format the drive to NTFS.Took about 17 minutes to copy 20 GB (VERY fast for USB 2.0).I give it 4 stars out of 5 for the first drive that failed. I guess I'm one of the lucky ones :).

I purchased this in June of 2007. It worked very nicely for about 4 months. I had a computer problem that forced me to shut down my computer improperly. When I turned everything back on, I could not access the drive. I got a message saying the drive needed to be formatted. I had a technician access the drive and my files are still there. The master boot record is gone, however. I have to buy another drive to move them to and then format the drive and all should be fine. After I do this, I won't trust this drive again. I will only hook it up when I need to and not leave it plugged in all the time as I was doing. I have had the My Book Essential Edition 250GB for well over a year and have never had a single problem. It is on all the time (and was on when I had the computer problem that caused the 500GB drive problem with no errors to the 250GB drive). It is a very good product. I'd go with two of the 250GB My Books and stay away from the 500GB altogether.

Not only is this product noisy and loud, it is unreliable. Beware all potential customers, I lost all of my data. The only customer service option is to send it back for $500.00 for data recovery.
