I bought the 500GB model. It ran fairly well for a year. The warranty period (which is not that long) is only good from the date of Manufacture, not the date you purchased the drive. The warranty expired in Sep 07 and here we are in May 08 with a failure. If you are not wanting to replace the drive every couple of years, stay away from this brand.

Very high failure rate. Don't look at the 5 star reviews, if it were last week I would have given it 5 stars also. I've just lost 175 gig of music. Most of it is from my own collection but about 20 percent were purchased downloads. Western Digitals' only solution should be make sure you buy a second one as a back up source.

Worked fine for approximately 18 months. Today it stopped working, emitted a little wisp of smoke, and passed on to electronic heaven. Not in a big hurry to buy from these people again.

Works well, a bit slow running on usb 2.0, but I suppose that's the bus. I don't use all the fancy software so i can't review that. But for basic external hard drive storage, it works fine, though a bit slow.

I purchased two of these in September, one for myself, and one for my mother. I have been a fan of Western Digital, and have several other drives of theirs. This series is simply not up to the quality I expect from Western Digital. Both drives failed within a month of purchase and had to be replaced by Western Digital. Now one of the replacements is showing symptoms of failing as well. Replacing these drives might not have been so terrible if Western Digital's customer service had responded to inquiries in a timely manner (It took approximately 10 emails and a month of time before I could get them to reply) and had sent the correct power adapter with both of the replacement drives.Based on my previous experience, I might still consider Western Digital drives, but I definitely will not be purchasing from the MyBook line ever again. They are cheaper because they are a sub-par product.

Purchased a My Book Premium 250GB External Hard drive on 1/26/2007. Installation was normal. I backed up both a desktop and laptop every week. On 3/20/2007 the external Hard Drive began to click internally for the first time. I tried to do a backup but my computer did not recognize the My Book. Evidently it went belly up just beyond the one year limited warranty. I see that Western Digital is no longer selling the 250GB, 320GB, or 500GB on their Internet site. I have had no reply from Tech Support. Do I smell something rotten in Denmark?

I just purchased a WD My Book Essential Edition 500 GB external hard drive yesterday. I backed up files from an old HP laptop, transferred some additional files from a 2-yr-old Gateway laptop, and then went to transfer everything over to my newer Dell laptop. The Dell would not recognize the hard drive. After a quick search online, I found that many other folks have run into the same problem. So, planning to get everything off the hard drive and return it, I plugged it into my Gateway that it had previously worked on. The Gateway now does not recognize the drive. The old HP does not recognize the drive. I even tried a desktop eMachine and a Dell desktop, and neither of them will recognize it either. The blue ring does not turn on. The drive is completely silent - no signs of life. I have not abused it, and have followed all directions carefully concerning order of plugging things in and using the "safely remove hardware" feature before removing it from the computers that did recognize it (when they recognized it). I have irreplaceable files on this now non-functioning hard drive! Lesson learned - I have never only had files on external drives in one place, but did it this time and now am regretting it mightily! Stay away from this one!

I've had two My Books for over a year. I use one for backing up and one to keep my media files tidy and in one place. I had no idea that everyone was having so many problems. I run XP home edition with service pack two. I reformatted the units to NTFS. I have not had any damage to my systems by shutting down the computer with My Book still powered up and I have not found it to run slow, but I don't have cutting edge computer hardware any more-- I typing this on an hp purchased in 2001 that still gives good service. The main problem? These large external drives discourage me from ever deleting a file. I'm enough of a packrat at it is and I don't need any encouragement to be a digital packrat as well. Heck, I even went through the 3.5 disks I have and copied the contents to the hard drive. I wonder where I could find a 5.25 drive? I know I have an old box of floppies around here with some DOS games on them.

It vibrates a bit, but that is easy to forgive in light of the really attractive design, a black-sheen case that evokes nothing less than a futuristic bible. Or maybe a Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. The Essential edition sports a green circle of light, and a single USB2 connection. The Essential edition is the budget edition of the line, lacking a FireWire connection and without a second ring of light that indicates (on the Premium and Pro editions) how much room is left on the drive. But who needs that? And personally I prefer the green illumination, anyway. The circle of light doubles as an on/off button, conveniently located on the front. You may not need to tap that button much though, since the drive senses when you Shut Down (or Hibernate or Stand-By) your computer and automatically turns off.Essentially, the design of the case and the automatic on/off are the two main reasons why these drives have become so popular within weeks of their debut. It took me three weeks to score one of these on sale. You've probably read that the vents are a code. It reportedly spells out words such as "innovative", "reliable", "personal", "design", and "simple". The design of this drive is certainly innovative. The last memorable time when a designer got involved in making a case for an external hard drive was when the LaCie company hired F.A. Porche, but Porche, in what one could speculate was a bit of a cruel joke on LaCie, turned in a generic metallic brick (ooh I bet that angered LaCie). Western Digital, in contrast, has turned in a strikingly elegant case that would look great on a shelf. Expect other companies to follow suit with shelf-worthy case designs, now that good aesthetics have been introduced to this formerly purely-functional line of products. One small unexpected complaint. You can see why they dubbed it "My Book", but rather inconveniently for anyone who is actually writing a book and already has a folder named "My Book", this drive is formatted with the name pre-designated as "My Book". But authors need not worry; that name is easily erased when one reformats the drive to the NTFS standard that current computers use (like nearly all hard drives, it arrives formatted in the old FAT32 format to accomodate users of older computers). Just plug it in, reformat the drive to NTFS (which takes an hour or so for a drive this size), and then it is ready to serve you. The drive came with some software on it, but none of it is needed. So far, so good. If no one reports any design flaws, I expect people will be "swearing by" this book... ok that pun was lame.Four stars rather than five, because of the slight vibration.

This was the best purchase that I could have made for my computer. I had purchased my computer used, for sixty dollars, from a fleamarket. After cleaning, re-registering, adding anti spyware/virusware, downloading needed software, upgrading, and everything else that needed to be done. I had about 5 GB left of hardrive space. With all the new software, gameware, upgrades, picture, and music files that are out there. That 5 GB wasn't going to last long. So after much research, and price comparing. I invested in the Western Digital My Book Premium Edition 250 GB External Hard Drive. 250 GB! This is exactly what my computer and I needed. With this handy little device, I backed up all of my system software, transfered all of my pictures, and music files, added more pictures, music, and software, and I still have more than 230 GB left. Westen Digital makes great products. Installing this was a snap. All I had to do was plug it in. All the software is self contained. It basically loads itself. This thing is so quite, and compact I forget that it's even there. The fact that it shuts off when I turn off my computer is just an added plus. The only regrets that I have about this item is that I didn't buy it sooner. With all the unnecessary software transferred off of my regular hardrive. My computer is running problem free, and faster than ever. Having the extra storage definately saved my computer.

I have used this product for 5 years, and it works fine. Just make sure you format for NTFS, else you may experience a nightmare below. Do not read below, unless you feel necessary NOT TO FORMAT ( and be stupid, like me. )------------I am editing the stars to 4 star - but cannot do it on amazon. Afteryou understand the pitfalls (you must format this drive NTFS first,) then all other aspects of it are very good. So, below -- just keep in mind that I was "upset".If you do not format this external drive - be ready for some real problems. Forget the 2-page manual that says "preformatted." You need to format this one. Or else ...The WD 250 boasts on being an external drive, but neglects to mention that it must be unplugged from the computer before power down. Well, clumbsy me, I made the same mistake twice with this product. The desktop and the laptop both recognized the MyBook drive "ok" and had no problem writing data files to it. So, I thought all is well. But, in both cases, once the PC was turned off - it became a nightmare. Since both my PCs run in XP Prof mode, with all service pack software updated, latest and greatest versions of everything, I would assume nothing should go wrong. Not so. In both cases, the Xp operating system was damaged to "the point of no return." Furthermore, all data on my PCs were lost. Now - why did I buy this external hard drive? Ok, this is not the first time some hardware has gone wrong on my PCs, but usually it does not take out the entire operating system - such that I cannot run a "restore," and get back to working. After calling WD on the phone, they suggested that I must unplug the MyBook each and everytime, before turning off the PCs.I would have given this external drive a 4 star rating - if it was not for the bad experiences, and the loss of time, loss of data from my PC.

This is an excellent hard drive and the best part is the on/off switch in the front, which later models eliminated. However, it does have a "sleep" functionality that works well. One flakey thing, though, is if you shut if off manually at the switch, when you shut down your computer, it "wakes up" the hard drive and you have to manually turn off the hard drive again. Small problem, nothing to worry about. Apparently the "sleep" trigger on the hard drive just senses any shutdown or wakeup of the desktop. Overall, a great item to have with lots of storage space and is very, very quiet when its running.

I haven't had it long, but so far I am loving this thing.I only use a laptop and it was getting painfully slow due to music and high resolution photos, etc. clogging up the memory, so that's all I've put on My Book so far, but it works like a dream. I don't know squat about computers, but transfer rates seem to me to be the same as if I were to copy the files to anywhere else on my computer (say, into the folder for a CD-R that I want to burn, but without the added time to actually burn a CD), sometimes even faster, now that I can clear out some of my laptop's memory. All my music plays right off My Book and my CPU is free to do the things I want it to do, which is all I needed this for.I should add, however that, although it is plug and play, I read enough reviews to know that I should reformat it first. But as I said, I know nothing about computers. The instructions provided are extremely minimal, and while they, too, advise reformatting, they don't explicitly say how it should be done. They direct you to the website, which, for a person like me, had very difficult-to-comprehend computer-talk. (I thought about taking it down a star for this, but this is not a fault with the product, but rather an oversight by whomever wrote the manual.) So I took a much longer time trying to make sure I was doing it right than the Book took to reformat itself once I hit the okay button. (Actually, it reformatted instantly for me. I think it knew what I wanted it to do before I did!)I haven't had any trouble with noise or vibration; my laptop is certainly louder. But I can tell that it comes to attention whenever I get close to clicking on anything that has to do with it....I think it's psychic....it certainly knows more about my computer than I do...And, what can I say: I love books. It looks great next to my lineup of classical literature (see my photos). If not for the cords and my massive (but equally fabulous) printer, you'd never know I had computer gear on the bookshelf.

The power supply/USB interface module is junk. The drive failed and didn't say why. I took the actual drive out of the enclosure and it worked fine in a PC with a SATA controller and power supply, so you know it's the tinker-toy module in the external enclosure. I called WD to tell them about it and they told me I voided the warranty by opening the case. If it crashes and you want your data, take the disk out because it seems like the problems are caused by the interface, but they won't make it good. Even a junk company like WD can usually get a hard drive to work, but don't buy this toy. What WD doesn't realize is that some people actually value their data.

I received this drive for Christmas. It lasted two and a half months of light use before failing inexplicably. Blinking front indicator light, but the drive won't spin up and no computer I connect it to will recognize it. The day before it worked fine. Tech support was unhelpful, and I'm loathe to exchange the unit for another from the manufacturer. The drive is sealed inside the plastic shell, making removal difficult. I would not use this drive for anything valuable, it's cheaply made and untrustworthy.

the reason that i give 2 stars instead of 1 star is because that it is still able to keep my data-- the hd isnt failing. BUT, i really do not like this EHD, because it is really unreliable to transfer big files. from time to time, usually within 10 mins, it will automatically shut off while i'm accessing files in it. then i just shake it, it comes back on. i hope other people will not have this problem, it gets really annoying. plus, there are so many reviews about high failure rate about WD's high capacity EHDs, so i will not recommend this to others.

Little disappointed in the build quality. Being plastic and cheap feeling, even the USB cord seemed cheaper. But other than that no trouble, speed etc seem to be fine!

Western Digital has a good reputation, and their products are generally good. But my situaiton was as follows: a couple of DAYS after installing it, I could no longer access it. I went to their support line, and, after a number of tests, it was clear that the product was defective.Amazon only refunds 50% of the value of opened and used products, according to their policy. Western told me to return it to the seller. I explained Amazon's policy, so they had me return to them and replaced it with a refurbished model. So even though I had the product only a few days, I have a used one in its place. The good news is the the refurbished one is working well. If return/replacement issues are significant to you, you might take this into account.New info: I and another respondent have had trouble with the hard drive info being completely lost. Apparently this is not the fault of the unit but the nature of hard drives. Leave it off when you do not need it. Even though it can take the heat, sometimes, when you turn your computer off (or on), a stray static charge can erase the info from your external drive. So use this as a storage drive (backing it up first) and leave it off except when you need it, and then turn it off.

We loved it for the first few months...though at times it had difficulty being recognized or powering up when the computer was restarted. Before 11 months went by it died...the click of death (as another reviewer put it) is exactly right. And it comes on suddenly. Yesterday it was fine, today it's dead. We lost 500GB of information (we were only able to back up half of what was on it before it died). We thought we'd at least have time to burn DVDs of everything and store the device as backup, turns out IT is the replaceable piece of hardware. Too expensive to be that so my suggestion is to just not buy one. My Seagate on the other hand is still trucking after 2 and a half years.

These WD drives have tought me to expect satisfaction from the moment I open the box. I have two more 250 gig externals which I use for storing all my Video & Pictures. The ease of set up and consistancy of their function keeps me a WD customer. The 500 compared to the 250's has a bit louder buzz when the discs spin and a slightly louder click when turning off an on, but its not enough to bring distraction to me sitting only ~18 inches from them when working at my desk (keep in mind my PC is not in a cabinet so the din of the office may drown out the external drive noise a bit). But over all I have been 100% satisfied with their function.
