This is the third WD My Book drive that I've purchased and my experience with all three has been excellent. They're simple to install; economical to operate; quite attractive in design and appearance. If all you need is a USB 2.0 link to your computer the My Book Essential Edition is the way to go.

I have a long experience with WD drives, both internal and external and they seem to work quite well. I also have a 160GB external WD drive, which works fine.The particular 500GB is a solid product, does not overheat, idles when not used, and is recognized both by Windows and Linux (SUSE, Ubuntu) without any glitches. It interacts well with a multi-OS environment.The only thing remaining is the time issue - it needs more time to simmer, but it's a nice and relatively backup solution for those interested.

Installation was extremely easy. Drive was ready to use within 10 minutes of opening the box.Since I have started using it, the drive's operation has been quiet and dependable.

I purchased this 500GB external HD even after reading the comments about the reliability issues. I must say I have been pleased with it. The drive is quiet and the Plug and Play function worked perfectly. It looks good and is very unobrusive.If the drive fails or has any problems, I'll add an addendum on this review. But..... so far, so good. Having an extra half Terabyte really rocks!

This is a great product it is good for data, music, movies, and backing up your computer. It has tons of space and I recomend this to any one. I also put my movies on it and was able to connect it to my xbox 360 and watch moves off of it. It is a great device that can help move some files off your computer and free up some space. Makes a great gift too.

Works as advertised. I haven't been able to get an eSATA cable to try that out yet tho. The only quirk I've had with it is that it will turn itself on automatically when I boot up my computer and with Windows Vista, it hangs before getting to the Windows loading screen. It did not do this on my XP machine. Not sure why it does that, but it's not that big of a deal, and I hope when I switch to eSATA, it will fix that as well.

I bought this during the after Thanksgiving sales last year and was happy with it until about a month ago. The light flickered and the drive is no more. Gone are all my files and more importantly - all my music. It was great while it lasted - but not worth the $70 I paid for it. Nothing could be recovered from the drive either and I took it to two different places. I will be continuing my search for a hard drive - and staying far away from Western Digital.

Worked flawlessly for about two months. Today it's blinking on/off in a very fast infinitely repeating cycle. From Answer ID # 1314 on WD Tech Support, it means it either isn't getting enough power from the power strip/surge protector (ruled that out), has had a power supply failure, or a drive failure. And to make this sweeter, I didn't make the DVD backups of my data like I should; I grew too trusting of my WD. Well, I've been cured of that. The honeymoon is over, and it ended with a bang. Not literally, but it might as well have been.

This WD 500 hard drive died after 2 months of flawless use. With no warning, Windows could not find it, then could find it but said it needed to be formatted. Critical files stored on the drive were lost. WD says the drive can be reformatted and reused, but I don't trust it.

Got the drive about a week ago for use with my new MacBook Pro, and so far it has perfoermed fine, although I still have to put it through heavy use.Initially, there was a problem: hooking it up to the laptop, it wouldn't mount and the green ligh was blinking, with the drive showing nowhere in the connected device list. Not very promising... But after opening the Dik Utility, it magically appeared, was re-formated to HFS+ without a problem and soon after I was filling it up with backups.The speed is OK, comparing to my LaCie 7200 RPM Firewire 400 drive it was noticabely slower, but still acceptable: a large folder copied to LaCie in 28 secs., vs. 36 for the WD.It IS noisy. You can clearly hear it working, it's louder than any of my other external drives and when going to sleep, it makes a horrible LOUD clicking sound. The case feels cheap, but looks OK stashed away in the corner of my desk...All in all, for the price it's a really fine product.

The first drive arrived defective (with bad sectors). Western Digital offered immediate replacement. The customer service was good. Anyway, I replaced it through Amazon (they really have a great service there!!!), and received a new hard drive the day after.The second one has no bad sectors, but still when I am trying to backup things directly to the drive, it always fails in the middle. I need to backup to my internal hard drive and then copy it to the external.

This drive seems good so far. We're using it primarily for document storage and backup. It has a lot of storage space and I doubt we will ever fill it. Any complaints from other reviewers about noise should be ignored, it's quieter than most desktop computers.Well, I guess I was wrong. After about 10 months of using this drive only a few times per week, it started having problems. The drive will turn itself on when the computer is hibernating and even when it is completely disconnected from the computer. I try to turn it off by holding in the power button for 5 seconds like the instructions tell you to do but it doesn't always respond and usually takes at two times doing that to turn off. Sometimes it will turn itself on again right after I shut it down and it takes several tries to get it to shut down.We've had other problems with it as well. The computer will not always register the drive every time you plug it in even though the drive is connected and the power button indicates that it is getting power. The drive will repeatedly spin the disc at high speed and then slow down as if it is attempting to read something or function properly but it does nothing. We are lucky to get the thing to register on the computer long enough to access the data we have stored on it so I'll be lucky if I can recover my information the next time I use it. I purchased a Seagate Freeagent external hard drive about a month ago and it seems to be a much better drive so far because everything has worked well and it doesn't make any of the noise that the My Book does.

Decent hard drive,a little slow with USB. Originally purchased for TIVO HD expansion, the model number looks the same but it is not supported by Tivo. Do not try to link with your DVR, but it does make a good Time Machine back-up for my Mac.

I bought this - transferred 200GB of data to it, and next time I used it all the data, and the format of the drive was gone. It said I needed to reformat the drive. This has happened twice now. With so many people claiming this is defective it is no wonder they are on sale everywhere.A small note: The 1TB version works great.

I bought this hard drive to back up various computers at home -- Macs and PCs. At first eveything was fine. But once I got up to 350 GB, I started to hear a hum. It got louder by the time I finshed transferring files and it was at 400GB. I touched and it was REAL HOT!I thought OK, maybe too many files loued too quikly. I dismounted it and turned off the power.Next day I tried to mount it and it would not show up on any of the machines! All those hours, all those back ups to a failed disk! I had problems with a Western Digital portable drive earlier -- real finicky on which computers it would mount on. So WD will NOT get strike three -- they are OUT for me.Going back LaCie whose HDs are still working after 10 years!You buy cheap, you get cheap!

WD external HD arrived and was in good condition worked well, but came without an E-Sata cable. I don't know why WD would ship the device without this necessary cable to hook up to a TIVO. For pete's sake, charge a few $ more, but include all the cables.

I ordered this external hard dive because my computer was acting up and I didn't want to lose everything if I had to reformat. I backed it all up in just a few minutes then I backed up my daughter's computer on the same hard drive. We haven't had to pull it off yet but it worked well.

I have two primary requirements for an external drive: speed and reliability. This Western Digital "My Book" drive has excelled on both counts. It has one really nice extra - it looks good. Since I know that I'm too lazy to back up my data if it requires walking across the room to get something off of a shelf, I leave this drive hooked up next to my laptop. It doesn't stand out at all, and blends in well with the pile of hardbacks nearby.Be forewarned that there are much smaller external drive options out there. This is not the drive you want if you care about portability. On the other hand, the size of the enclosure keeps the drive nice and cool and well-protected, so if you don't plan on carrying it in your messenger bag - this is the drive I recommend.

I was looking for a good, reliable external HDD basically to archive media files. I'd rigged up some home-cooked external drives using old drives and drive enclosures, but the reliability had been spotty. The price was a main factor with the My Book 500 GB; it was actually cheaper than some internal drives of the same size.Pros: The unit is elegant, relatively quiet and non-intrusive. You can leave it plugged in at all times- it powers up and down with your PC, meaning this is an external HD you can actually use like an internal drive.Cons: It gets a bit warm, and sometimes seems to spin up for no reason.Bottom line: A terrific storage option. It looks good, performs well, and is reliable. I have NEVER had a problem with WD, and have owned literally dozens of their drives.

This was brought out by WD several months ago at a hefty price tag of around 350.00 dollars. But I purchased this one for 119.00 and its a whopping 500gig external drive. I now have three of them, and all my WD hard drives work flawlessly. NICE PRODUCT AND A GREAT PRICE...AMAZON DELIVERS AGAIN..Dennis

I have now had 2 of these. And I thought I found the perfect solution for back up and one just to keep my MP3s on. And I was right. They pugged right in and just worked. Then the warranty expired and within a week of the expiration they both died. And there I was left out in the cold. Don't depend on these for more than temporary back up.
