Ужасно
Product failed after 16 months of light use. Would have been about 1,000 man hours of work lost if I had not had a second backup drive. Would not recommend.

I bought this drive on may 2nd, 07. The next day I registered online. While doing so, I noticed the warranty ran out in dec. 07. I emailed WD, "What happened to my 12 month warranty?". The reply, "All warranty's start on date of manufacture." "Excuse me!" Then if it sit a year before being sold, NO WARRANTY!? I was told, to consider an update on the warranty, I must send in the Model#, Serial#, date of purchase, place of purchase, tele.# of place of purchase, everything they should have from the registeration process. I sent them a copy of my sales receipt from Amazon, with everything they asked for, informing them , Amazon displays no phone #'s. In a few days, I got an email with a list of "faq's", stating, if that didn't answer my question, to "reply to this letter, writing between the [ ] brackets. I replied. Got the same letter. During this time the drive developed a thumping noise, (which later disappeared) after 3 or 4 of these letters, I notified Amazon about my problem. They sent UPS to my door, picked up the drive & gave me a full refund. Two days later, I got an email saying my warranty had been updated. The next day, I got one asking for all the info all over again. I trashed it and listed their address in my spam filter. With a little research, I found Seagate gives a (5) year warranty and is a reliable co. from wayback. My fault I didn't get a Seagate to begin with.

Lots of space, seems to work flawlessly. After reading all the reviews on the failure rates of these drives I will update if anything bad happens. But thus far easy to use with my Macbook Pro, lots of space and very fast.

I've had this for a little over a year, notice only a one year warranty comes with it. PLEASE do not store anything you really don't want to lose on it. I had about 250 gigs stored from my photography company, luckily I run more than one machine. It died, oh, it comes on and the USB port shows something there, but the device is clicking like a tap dancer on speed. Try to use one of WD's data recovery preferred partners with price starting at $595.00. I will be moving up to a more reliable brand after I try to get all my stuff off of this dead one. THANKS WD!!!

Really simple to install and use. You might want to reformat it to NTFS which holds larger files like say a totally legal backup of a dvd. My only small gripe is that it's actual capacity is about ~460 GB which is 500 million(billion?) bytes. But that seems to be common practice in the industry unfortunately. Whatever, it's cheap get it already.

Although set-up was easy, the WD didn't provide any back-up software. I would've rated the 2500 at least a three, if the transformer hadn't died within just 3-months.

This drive failed on me and I lost all my data -- TWICE. One time was after perhaps 2 months. A second time after about 9 months. It is incredibly frustrating, DO NOT BUY THIS DRIVE unless you are willing risk data loss.

After having two of these die, I searched a bit on the internet and found these are notorious for failing within the first year (if not sooner). It's difficult to tell which exact "my book" variants have this problem, but if WD doesn't care enough about its reputation to throughly test all of them....why bother buying one?

i am really happy with this item, i backed so much important things on this drive and it was a good thing cause my little cousins came over one day and gave my computer a virus.... :( but since i had everything saved on my external drive I just re-did my windows without worrying about losing my important files.

Picked this up here on Amazon from J&R Music for $108 after shipping. I could not be happier. The price was fantastic and the product works great. I reformatted to NTFC because I needed support for 10+GB movie files (there are step-by-step formatting instructions on the Western Digital website for those of you who -- like me -- may be novices). No problems with that. No problems with the USB or Firewire interfaces either. Both my desktop and laptop detected the drive without a hitch.Buy it at this price before they're gone.

i didn't install any of the wd software, and the xp system I had worked just fine. it does what its supposed to. i've had it for a year, no problems. it nicely goes to sleep when my computer sleeps.

If you get a message about "USB Device Recognized" and then your computer launches the Device Driver Wizard, YOUR DRIVE IS UNDERPOWERED. Cancel the wizard, don't even bother trying to install a driver. The MyBook does not have any drivers, and does not need any. I'm a little dissapointed that WD would let this slip by, but this fix is simple - plug it into a less crowded power strip, or into the wall by itself. It's a bummer, but not enough to knock a star off of an otherwise perfectly great product.I love this drive, and bought one for my mother, too. It works great (so long as it's got enough juice). It's smaller than I thought, has a longer than average power cord and is picked up by my laptop and tower instantly and easily. There are no drivers - just plug it in and you've got access. Linux Defender mounted this drive and BartPE recognizes it, too - makes this a great recepticle for data recovery.USB2 is basically the same speed as firewire. You'll get the same speed but spend less if you add a $15 USB2 PCI card to your computer (if your computer doesn't have USB2 already) instead of getting the more expensive (non-"Essential") versions of this drive for the firewire connection. Plus, you'll have upgraded your computer to USB2 for thumbdrives and whatever else.

If I could give it a half star I would. I bought this drive at BB during their labor day special and returned not one but two. The first drive I brought home had both FireWire ports DOA. It worked fine using the USB but I prefer FireWire so back to the store it went. I thought that maybe it was a fluke so I opted for an exchange. The second drive seemed to work fine using the FireWire port so I thought cool, now let me integrate it into my FireWire daisy chain. Oops not a good idea, none of the other drives I attached after the My Book mounted. I thought it was strange so I unmounted the My Book drive unplugged it from my computer and plugged it in all alone using the other FireWire port. No worky. I plugged it in using the first FireWire port I tried and it was good. So the second drive only had one functional FireWire port. Back to the store it went since I need to daisy chain multiple drives and I ended up getting a full refund. That was two out of two drives that were flawed. I am not buying another WD product. Fool me once...

I have purchased this product from Staples because I waited till the last minute to search for a good laptop for college. I wanted to have my music and important files for when I purchased my laptop on the way to my university. It worked fantastic for transporting my files from home to my new computer that I purchased away from home. It kept the files even though it requires power to function becasue it is a hard disk system. As such it works just like your home hard drive. So far my hard drive has worked just fine with my Vista Operating System and it is fairly tough since it got knocked around a bit on it's way here and during setup. Since I purchased a laptop hardrive space on the actual laptop is very limited in fact my WD holds more than my laptop so I put everything on it. This keeps my laptop free and running fast also my WD runs pretty fast itself so I love it.

Last week I bought a WD My Book Essential Edition, 320 GB, connected it and began backing up data. 7 hours later, the job--8 GB--was done! When I had the unit setup for automatic backup, my PC took at least 20 minutes to bootup to the desktop screen.Finally, my computer began showing "I/O error" after I turned off the hard drive off; I wanted to do some manual backups. To top it all, My Computer would not always show the unit as being installed.In short, my unit did not work quite as well as I expected. I am returning it this aftrnoon, for another make and model.One final note. This unit was released in July 2007; I suspect there are some bugs needing to be worked out.And the documentation is nothing more than a 4-page illustrated guide to connecting the unit. I would like a bit more than that.

I bought this drive a little over a year ago and loaded every single digital photo of my life as well as over 3000 mp3s and videos of my kids...and then one of my kids knocked over the drive while it was running. Just knocked it over, not down or across the room or anything. And now my computer won't recognize the drive and gives me the blue screen of death any time I try to turn on the drive. So I'm hoping and praying that the computer geeks down the road will be able to restore the data, but I am NEVER going to buy a WD drive again!!!

This is a good product for doing what it is supposed to do, provide a lot of added file storage space. However, some software which is resident on it, links itself to the files which you copy from your hard drive. If you make changes to one set of files (either on it or on your Computer's hard drive), it makes the equivalent changes on the other and vice - versa. I am still trying to figure out how to avoid this.

-The drive failed after one month of use. The contents just disappeared while in use. Western digital service department was completely unhelpful. All they said was that sometimes this drive fails when it does not get enough power, and I should plug it in its own outlet.So if this drive is underpowered, you may lose all your data! Not the safest place to put valuable data... I lost 250 GBs; WD told me there is nothing they could do!Luckily, I came accross a utility (called Zero Assumption Recovery), which recovered 95% of my data, contrary to what their service had said. Phew!-The capacity is 465 GB, as reported by Windows XP, not 500 GB.-If you have to format the drive, Windows cannot do it, you have to use a WD utility. Other than that, the software is pretty much useless.-Make sure to disable the auto-scandisk feature during Windows booting. It might automatically start scanning your USB drive(s) on start up, find errors, and convert all your files into .CHK remnants. It happened to me, as well as others, and it was not pleasant.-The warranty is 1 year in the US, and 2 years in Europe. Why?

I have had 2TBs worth of these 500gb drives die on me. i have lost sooooo much files its not even funny. I have one left and i am orderign drives from other brands and backing up everything like i am somekinds squirel or something. These drives have just over 1yr lifespan if your lucky. And theres no warnign sign. they just die...

It worked fine for about 6 months, but then without warning died on me. It says the drive is unformatted and asks if I would like to format it now? I knew I should have bought 2 of them and had one back up to the other. Some of the stuff I had on there I had been collecting for years and cannot be replaced. Don't put ANYTHING on this drive you can't afford to lose!

I also have the Western Digital My Book Premium Drive 500gb and when it was time to add more space I decided that I didn't need Firewire/400 and backup software. Even though they look like the same drive physically, the "Essential" drive looks cheaper. Probably because of the lack of Firewire port, the essential is slightly smaller in volume. The Premium edition had nice a nice hard feel and rubber footing around the edges of the top, back and bottom of the unit. However, with the essential, there's only 2 rubber footing on the bottom, thus it just feels cheaper than the premium.With that in mind, I think it's still a better value than the premium, since you're getting the same storage, you save 40-50 bucks by not having Firewire and backup software.Performance-wise, my 2 mybooks have been performing just dandy. I've only had the essential for a couple of weeks, the premium one I've had for I think about 8 months. I use it to backup all my video, music and photos and it's a solid performer. I transport them back and forth and only turn on the unit when I save data off my main powerhouse windows computer, then I use the drives to access my files off my Apple laptop at my loft.They do come with small power bricks, but overall I like the black design, it goes nice with my PC but doesn't look that great next to my powerbook.

I bought this product mainly to backup my files and free up some room on my aging laptop. You can find cheaper and more expensive models but I felt this one would do well.So far I had it for a few months and works well. I backed up my laptop a few times. I only backed up the files I use, not the whole computer, which filled about 8% of the drive. Since everything was working well I decided to move all my music and videos on there.My laptop is connected 24-7 and the drive is working probably 6 hours of the day. I have no complaints.The blue light does cool swirly patterns when writing/reading and when shutting off. Nothing real crazy but a cool detail.

The rubber gasket cording, whatever it is called, which surrounds the perimeter of this product totally came off. The case came apart. It still works, but obviously this is not good.I called western digital and they will not stand behind the product. they will not replace the drive.I bought it 2 months ago. I always buy LaCie drives and decided to try this - bad decision it appears. Furthermore the customer service representative could barely speak English leading me to think perhaps I was really talking to someone in another country?? Whenever I have had an issue with a LaCie product, whose call center is located in the US - they stand behind it 100%, no questions asked. I rate this one star, because they do not stand behind the product and have bad customer service.
