As is typical of Western Digital HDD's, you just plug it in and it's up, running and ready to use - seriously, any idiot can do it. Really, it takes longer to unpack it and find a place to put it, that it does to start using it after plugging it in. I do have a gripe, and it's not just aimed at Western Digital: why do these HDD manufacturers continue to ship these drives formatted with FAT32? I would hazard a wild guess that probably more than 95% of people that buy these things are using an XP (or equivalent) system (and I'm sure that some upset win98se user will rebut me on this). But seriously, if you're using XP, it's almost a necessity that the drive be reformatted to the NTFS file system. Not a terribly difficult task, but you need to know how to do it; either from the Computer Management Console or a Command Prompt. But this is a minor gripe. This is a terrific drive for the price. Is 1,000GB (1TB?) just around the corner?

This product is so unreliable, it stopped working after a few months. I spent more time to clean it up. Not to mention the data loss. Please do not buy this product, or you will regret!

For me that wanted an External disk to work with this OS it has been worthless. But if that's not your case, you may buy it. Regarding otheraspects is a good hardware.

It was pretty cool. Plugged it in it worked straight no issues till I tried to store a file that was 7 gigs it would not support that. So I moved my iTunes library to it instead. Im not unhappy kust mildly dissapointed because it wont do what I wanted it for. But if you only intended to store file smaller than 6 gig this is for you.

I bought this produce about 6 months ago and it just completely died last week. All of my data was lost and there was no way to recovery it unless maybe paying over $500 to see if a company could get it for me. The worst part is that Western Digital has THE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE that any company could have. They won't even answer any questions about why this happened and why are they not responsible for recoverying my data that was lost because they make a horrible product. DO NOT EVER BUY A WESTERN DIGITAL PRODUCT.

After 1 year it suddenly crashed, I cannot recover any data. I have the "500 GB WD Book" on top of my desk, I've never traveled with it or hit the device. When it failed I tried CHKDSK /R and many other ways to bring it back.I lost about 350 Gigabytes of valuable data/applications/videos/music.Do not trust this piece of .... equipment.

I bought this product twice -- once for my home PC and once for the local Museum's PC. I really like the Premium Edition that I bought for my home because of the ease of use, friendly back up software, and large storage capacity. So when I ordered the second WD500 gb My Book for the Museum, I discovered that it lacked the friendly back up software and I sent it back. The Essentials Edition does not include this back up software but the description of the product by the online retailer did not explain it. So be sure to purchase the Premium Edition and not the Essentials Edition if you wish to do back up easily.

Worked pretty well except for one group of files that got corrupted. Now today the drive doesn't work at all. No power to it it seems. I'm guessing the power adapter quit as my last WD external drive had the same problem. However, that drive at least had an indicator light built into the power supply so I knew that was what happened. This cheap junk power suplly doesn't even have that so I have no way of knowing if power is actually getting to the drive and THAT'S dead. I would not recommend this.

This was my third external hard drive; I thought the price for this device was too good to be true, but I had faith in the WD name. After more than an hour, I was still unable to get this hard drive to work. My previous two drives were a breeze to install, but this one was absurd. The online "help" was useless, and even the various tips and tricks from online reviews did not work.Even if I got the drive to work at this point, I'm still returning it. I need a drive I can rely on; if this one is so flakey right out of the box, what's it going to be like in a year?

Checking the other reviews here on Amazon showed that everyone either loved this Western Digital drive (and gave it 5 stars) if it worked or else they blackballed it if it failed. As the prices for these drives continue to fall, since larger drives (500 GB as well as even 1000 GB) are now available, they really are a good buy and an excellent way to externally store as well as transfer data.My experience is that this drive is very easy to install, reformat, and use as an extra drive. No problems.The only thing I really don't like is the fact that it doesn't have a real on/off button. The circle on the front does turn off the power, but whenever the computer starts, this drive starts as well. That means that unless the drive is manually turned off after the computer starts, the drive will always be on when the computer is on. I prefer to have the drive on only when I need it to save it from unnecessary wear and tear. Other external drives from Maxtor and even other Western Digital drives have real on/off switches.This drive does make a noticeable hum while running.

Though I never owned an external hard drive before this one, it works very well. It is pretty quiet (though not SILENT) transfers information much quicker than I expected, and is very conveniently sized. If I have troubles with it, I'll be sure to update.

I bought my son a WD 120GB external drive that has worked flawlessly. I thought I would get the much larger version since I want to produce DVD movies but need much more storage. Out of the box I got the hard drive unit, a power supply and USB cable. That was it; no useful documentation, manual etc. I went to the WD web site and same story: no documentation, instructions etc. Only the "start up " info sheet which basically says plug it in. It took several days of experimenting just to get my MacBook to recognize it. Once connected, it has a very rapid transfer rate and a lot of capacity. From the moment you plug in the cable until the icon appears on the desktop takes about 45 seconds. You have to be patient.Despite that, I'm still having issues with connecting and ejecting the drive. Every so often it will just disconnect and I'll get a dialog telling me I should have ejected the drive before pulling out the cable. This message even though I had done nothing and the light on the drive was still blinking.Finally, I've determined that the drive will cooperate most of the time if I only power it up and connect it when I'm actually going to use it.I paid $125 at Target for this unit so it is a very good value. Unfortunately, it has been a source of headaches in day to day usage.

I purchased this unit to archive ultrasounds downloads through an office based network. Because of the save feature of this device which turns it off between images the down loads were slow choppy and unreliable. I essentially have a unit I have had no sucess with and will look to return it.

I was very excited when I received this HDD today, but only to be quickly disappointed. On the box, it clearly says "Window Vista Compatible," but the installation instructions are still for XP,ME, and 2000 operating systems. When I managed to get the My Book set up, looking all pretty next to my books, I plugged it into my laptop only to find out there are no drivers for this item. In fact, there isn't even support about how to get this to work on their site. Window's update couldn't even find a driver for this thing. Upond reading the box, it says "Works on some version of vista depending on PC configurations."I wish I hadn't wasted my money on this. I was very excited about getting this the day I got my paycheck only to be quickly disappointed.

Seems to work fine. I bought two: one for my Mac, one for my girlfriend's PC. Both were easy to setup for each computer, no problems so far. Only thing is, I keep seeing cheaper and cheaper prices for the same product... nature of the market I guess...

I have owned a WD MyBook Essential Edition for about one year now. The first one I purchased was defective. Disappointed, I traded it in. The one I own now have has operated flawlessly. It's always there when I look for it in My Computer, its fast and its quiet. The design is interesting as well. Being an engineer, I just had to open one up for a peek inside. I was surprised by the build quality. The disk is well dampened and protected. Western Digital has also gone to great lengths to make it difficult to open- But thats beside the point :)I am very satisfied with my My Book, and I don't see why you would'nt be either. A 5/5 for a very solid product.

This is a work horse in our family. We went back for duplicate purchases. Cranks along, but buzzes my desk at random times when backups are not scheduled. When it cranks, your desk top vibrates - like the back of a horse irritated by flies.

It's great, it's stylish, doesn't take up much more room, comes in BLACK, with a neat alien-esque green dial on the front, and most importantly, it's a Western Digital, so u know that means RELIABILITY!Holds plenty of media files, or what ever else u have 500 Gigs of, that u need storage space for!

the external hard drive is fairly good for what it's for. Basically to store and back up your files. It acts a little quirky with the Mac but for the most part work well. It's fairly easy to use and it's everything the descriptions claims it to be. Very good find if you find on sale.

I bought one of these drives since it had a good capacity, nice design, and both FireWire and USB 2.0 ports. However, both the FireWire ports were completely dead--the drive didn't respond at all when I plugged it into my Mac, nor did it show up on the desktop. The USB port worked OK, but it was pretty slow (FireWire is faster than USB for large data transfers), so I exchanged this drive for another of the same model, thinking the odds that two drives would both have malfunctioning ports would be pretty slim.I was wrong. The second My Book Premium that I bought had the exact same problem as the first (other online reviews I've seen also allude to defective batches of My Books). At this point, I gave up and bought a different hard drive.
