This is another case of having the drive for literally 2 days and having it work once. It worked long enough to install on 3 different computers, and transfer several gigs worth of data onto the unit itself with no problem. However once I tried to plug it back in to one of those same computers to transfer the data off of it, it died. Now, out of the three that it was installed on, none of them will even recognize it anymore for the short periods of time that it stays powered on (seems random). I'm an experienced user, and the item was never dropped or misused in any way. WD tech support took over a week to return email and was of no help, asking me if I'd done things that I already told them I had in my initial email. Their final reply was to simply send it back for a replacement, but after reading other stories, I doubt I'll even mess with it. An expensive loss, but lesson learned.

I bought this and was initially very happy with it. Unfortunately, shortly after the 1 year mark, it no longer mounted and now makes a clicking noise when connected. I can assure you that my next drive will NOT be a WD.

I had 2 MyBook Essentials die on me in less than 2 months. WD said they will replace the drive (for the 3rd time) if I mail it in. Too bad I have over 300gb of data stored on my drive. The computer (or any computer for that matter), fails to recognize the drive. Comes up as Unknow Device. My data is more important to me then getting a new drive from WD. So I went and purchased an external case (Vantec NexStar3) and took out the hard drive from MyBook and placed it into the Vantec case. My computer had no problems recognizing the new external case. From what I've been reading online, lots of people are having problems with MyBooks. WD is refusing to reimburse me for the price of the new case. I will post on every forum/review site that has anything to do with MyBooks and let everyone know the truth about how bad the quality of these overpriced drives really is. If you are thinking of getting a MyBook, DONT!

...it's half a tear-a-bite!This is a very good value for the money. I have had this for a month, running for prolonged periods. I have had no trouble. I'm very pleased with this purchase.

Like others, I immediately converted the drive to NTFS after I bought it. Because I intended to use the drive specifically to store WAV file versions of my CD collection, I did not want to run into any folder or naming convention limitations. With NTFS that is not an issue, but it does shrink the drive down by about 20mb.So, how many CDs fit onto this drive? Roughly, 1000. I did remove tracks I knew I really would never record. I also removed redundant tracks, which is a bit tricky because you'll find some have a much better sound quality than others. And some are slightly or largely longer versions.I also have a Seagate external for my 'overflow' CDs. If your collection is close to 2000 CDs, you probably want a 500gb drive. As these puppies keep getting cheaper by the day, you may want to hold off a while and wait for the terrabyte versions to arrive.

You put the data on there, you turn it off, you turn it on and poof- data all gone. It's magic, but not the kind of magic you ever want to see worked on your valuable data. I would strong recommend that you avoid this drive. You shouldn't have to lose important stuff the way I did. Sad but true, this product won't protect your files- it will destroy them.

I bought this external drive about a week ago (so my review is not that relevent in terms of long term reliability, but I'll come back and edit it if any issues arise). I bought it for extra storage and also for a quick easy way to transfer data from one computer to another.So far, I'm very happy with it - Amazon's shipping was super fast and setting it up was a breeze (literally just plug it in and connect to your computer via USB and you're good to go, my 2 XP based PCs recognized it instantly). It looks good, it's reasonably compact, I haven't had any issues accessing data in terms of speed, and it doesn't seem to run hot or anything like that. It also came at what I'd consider a very fair price considering WD's brand name in data storage.I'd highly recommend this external drive.

I like how this external hard drive will turn off on its own whenever you disconnect the usb or turn off your computer because it says power and most external hard drives make a slight humming noise (and yes this external hard drive does too). At first I was panicking but then I realized that my laptop was much louder and I hardly noticed that external hard drive. Everyone always panicks or gets angry if they find a fault like that but it isn't a problem for me at all.I haven't seen any problem with its speed, its pretty fast, and its usb cable is long enough for me. I am somewhat of a power user and I didn't have any problem with the speed so it should be fine for like 90% of people.

Don't believe the claim that you can "just plug it in and it's ready to use." This product is set up for Windows, and the instructions for installing the drive for a Mac fail to mention that you have to reformat the drive to remove the Windows software. It's easy to become hopelessly fouled up.Don't expect any help from Western Digital. If you can actually get connected to them, and your call isn't dropped while you wait for 40 minutes or so, you'll get a customer rep who reads to you from the same useless manual that came from the drive. Their web site help is equally useless.

This hard drive has wokred great so far, it looks great next to my mac airport extreme router and is generally a nice thing to look at. It has been knocked over, had its power shut off a lot and still runs quietly. So far I am very happy with it. It wokrs great as my wireless hard drive.

I had no problems with the WDG1U3200 and it worked flawlessly. I simply powered up the device and connected it to the PC's USB port and it was ready for use. I am now seriously thinking of getting a 500GB version of My Book to backup my digital photographs, which I now shoot in RAW mode.

.... Leave it formatted as a FAT32 disk. Though Macs can read an NTFS file, they can not write to it.I find this to be an extremely effective way of transferring files between computers, able to handle extremely large files. Really you are only limited by the speed of the USB 2.0 connection (which is not all that slow).I agree with the other positive reviews here, it is a fine piece of hardware for the money. Quiet, good looking, and ergonomically simple. Really can't go wrong with this.

I was looking for a 300GB+ External hard-drive to backup my data, photos, music and home-videos. I wanted a rugged drive as I was planning to keep the drive off-site and transport it back & forth for monthly backups.I evaluated LaCie, Seagate and other alternatives on the market and found the My Book has comparable or better specs and was aesthetically more pleasing than most. I also liked the simplicity and the concept of the My Book. The footprint is also among the smallest in the industry for a 500GB drive.The drive looks sleek and is not intrusive or odd on a desk. The casing is made of hard plastic. It looks and feels rugged. The drive has "morse-code" vents which, beside looking funky, help keep the drive extremely cool. Drive operation is extremely quiet. When placed vertically there are 2 rubber strips on the bottom to prevent the drive from sliding or vibrating. Multiple drives can also be stacked on their sides - rubber feet are included.The setup is pretty simple, just plug-in the power and connect the USB cable. Windows XP recognizes and sets up the drive quickly. Look for the drive under "My Computer" - you're up and running!!The drive comes pre-formatted as FAT32. You can reformat it to NTFS with relative ease under Win XP. There is some included Google software which you can copy to your local machine or download from Google.com. The drive switches on and shuts down with your computer. You can also turn the drive on/off via a large button which is surrounded by the green indicator.The only thing I miss is the WD Backup software - which seems to be bundled as an incentive with the Premium My Book drive. Another feature that people might miss is the "One-touch Backup" button offered by competitors.Overall, I'm very pleased with this drive!!

As for the hard drive itself, I'm quite impressed. It is very fast and behaves just like another hard drive.The difference between the Premium Edition and the Essential Edition is about $50 for which you get the WD Backup software. The Backup software needs some significant improvements to compare to other products like Acronis True Image, which just so happens to cost $50. While WDBackup provides scheduled backups, encrypted backups, incremental backups, and advanced backups (select exactly which files/folders to backup), the following deficiencies are not acceptable:1. Cannot view or edit an existing scheduled backup. You have to delete it and create a new one.2. Cannot backup networked drives.If I had to do it again, I would have bought the Essential Edition and purchased a much better backup software package.

For now no problems with storage space. Would have been nice to have a manual included and some recommendations how to best format it. Instead they give a link to a website which at the time I couldn't access. So I divided the space in 5 partitions which gives a problem when a power fluctuation occurs since then it gives my partitions different drive letters which of course is a bit of a nuisance to reset. Still 5 stars since it is a great product despite the drive letter problem.

This external hard drive has been great. The product was plug and play, and has caused me no trouble whatsoever. It is easy to use and requires little to no setup. As expected, it comes with software for the updating of backed up files, which is simple and clear.Western Digital followed up numerous times about the purchase, ensuring my satisfaction. They provide substantial information about contacting them for any reason.Overall, the entire purchase went very smoothly and I am very happy with the product. I highly recommend it.

This external hardrive is easy to use, comes with the appropriate attachments, and is saving me from alot of anxiety about my computer having hardware problems. I have saved all of my music, movies, and pictures, and I still have room for tons more!

I have been a fan of Western Digital hard drives for many years, but that ended with this product. I purchased an Essential Edition 250GB drive for my daughter as a Christmas gift, by New Years it was DOA. Giving WD the benefit of the doubt, I exchanged it for an identical replacement. This one made it until early March. Three clicks and it turns off. WD says there is nothing I can do, but I return it under a RMA. They can do nothing about the lost data. So much for using this drive for backing up important files. I've have had at least a dozen WD drives over the years and never had a failure, they just became obsolete because of their size. This product however....STAY AWAY!

First, let me state my PC's running well and has more than enough RAM for operating an external hard drive to spec. I've owned the WDG1U2500 for about 2 months and the good news is it's handsome to look at, seems to be well-built, and is relatively silent in operation. The bad news - That operation has proven to be erratic - sometimes refusing to turn off (even though the on-screen icon indicates so), sometimes not starting up until the computer is re-booted, and frequently seems to run abnormally slow. So far, this external HD hasn't lost any of my files but these glitches make me wonder about its future reliability and seriously think about whether to buy another Western Digital product again. Reliability, afterall, must be the major factor with external hard drives.

Would be better if it didn't need a fan/outlet, but it provides large storage in a little package. It's fast, super quiet, and readily detected by Windows XP, as promised. It actually only has about 460GB in available space, but I've come to expect that from storage devices.

What more can I say that you don't already see from the item description? This hard drive was the answer to my dreams. I bough it right off Amazon and have not seen any problems for a week.Here is the break down.Pros:Quiet yet good heat dispersion500 GB!Cheap ($170 - the cheapest 500gb HD I found with enclosure included)It looks cool. Come on the black and green light, it is just awesome.Lastly, it shuts down automatically when you shut down your computer. I cannot remember how many times I have left my external hard drives turned on all night.The only fault of this product I though was that it comes with a bunch of programs. What I did and suggest you do the same is just reformat it as soon as you get it.

Great external drive. Does what it is supposed to. I've even dropped it a few times and it still works great. (data wasnt lost either). Sometimes the on button is weird, you have to push it just right but this is rarely. For the price, this is the best, biggest drive you can buy.
