I am using this external harddrive as a storage space for a Satellite Receiver. The Receiver has a USB interface which I connected the Harddrive to. It seems to be working fine with no problems.

I own two of these things and although so far they've been reliable, with no serious problems to speak of after several months of use - I have to say that both are in every way (mounting, copying, browsing) unbelievably, painfully SLOW.

Super nice HD so far. I bought the 250gb from JR, and arrived two days after ordering it. Plugged it into my notebook and was backing up my thousands of photos within 2 minutes.The drive is very quiet. One nice feature is it shuts off when you shutdown your computer. Haven't used the backup software yet as I just drag and drop.I have a wireless network of 3 computers in the house and can back up all three from the notebook.Would recommend this product to anyone.****** Review Update ****** Dec 21st 2011 ******Drive just died. Would have thought It would have lasted longer then 3.5 years.********* review update ************Took the drive case apart and removed the drive itself. Bought a simple external drive enclosure and installed the drive in it. The drive itself was fine. The WD enclosure is junk. Taking it apart I found it was way over engineered and complicated. No wonder it broke down.The enclosure I bought from egghead is a Rosewell. It works very well and is very simple. I think it was around 10 or 15 dollars.

This drive is recognized and appears to work on my PC running Windows XP. However, during a large copy or backup operation it always fails with an IO error. I recommend spending a bit more for better reliability. I bought an internal 500GB seagate drive and a cooler master external enclousure for about the same price and it works like a champ.

As stated by a previous customer, this device works perfectly with The Dish Network USB external drive feature. Get an additional 500GB of storage for regular or HD programs which can be played directly from the external drive. All you have to do is plug it up and call Dish Network. What could be easier? Very quiet and compact.

The 250GB My Book external hard drive from Western Digital is a great place to store all of your extra photos, videos and mp3s. I find that the 250GB Essential (essential meaning lowest pricing tier) hits the sweet spot between space and price.For about 100$ (I actually got mine at Office Depot for less because of a great mail-in rebate) you get double the space of a cheaper 79$ 100GB drive. This is great because once you have all that space you'll fill it up quickly.The single USB 2.0 connection is more then enough to play music, view/edit pictures and movies. Writing to the drive is slower then reading. I have edited video stored on the hard drive with little issues of speed or write/read times. The drive itself is fairly appealing to the eyes. It looks like a black leather-bound book. Of course with two wires (one for power and one for USB) it totally destroys that image but what can you do? The little green light around the button is cool.The drive has two nifty features. The first is the auto-on/off. When not in use for a while the drive will simply shut off. It will turn itself on when you access it. This is a great feature because at 7,200RPMs this drive can get loud! Especially in an enclosed desk area. The second feature is that of a push-button backup utility. Good feature but I'll probably never use it.Pros: Storage space vs. price, little green light, auto-on/off, mail-in rebate (if you can find one)Cons: Noise, all those stupid wires, smaller drives can be had for lessConclusion: A very nice hard drive especially considering the storage space vs. price issue when considering other external hard drives.

I bought this drive for transfer and storage of programming recorded on my Dish Network DVR. All I had to do was plug the drive into the wall for power, connect the drive to the USB port on the DVR, call Dish to enable the USB feature and then follow the on-screen Dish prompts. It worked fine right away. If your DVR is filling up, this is a reasonable solution.

Same problems here as a dozen others, I/O write failures, bad sectors, slow, sometimes isn't detected by windows (xp or vista), or linux... quite simply, only buy this item if you have both lots of disposable income, and a need for a heavy paperweight.

Great product. Interesting look and easy to setup and use. Transfers are fast and and 250 gig is plenty of storage for me. The hard drive does hum a bit, but no problems at all.

The "My Book" is an attractive looking external drive solution, however mine lived for less than a year before the dreaded "click of death" took its life. Also unacceptable was the continuous drive power-down, even with power-saving disabled for USB and the drive. I won't be buying another WDC unit...

Put data in. Never get it back. I emailed customer support 4 times with no response. Finally had to call and sit on hold for a half an hour. They couldn't fix it so I have to send it in and get a new one. What about the files? Gone forever. They had no response to me losing my files, other than "sorry". This thing is the most expensive "recycle bin" I have ever bought. Do yourself a favor and just hit delete, because it is the same thing this product does.

Getting started was very easy with firewire and so far (about a month) everything has been working great with no problems. The actual transfer speeds are great for using the drive as just a backup external or even your main source hard drive.

Bravo Seagate. This is a great drive. No frills, no software, just the things I need: reliability, ease of use, smart design. Who needs a power switch? It automatically turns itself off when the computer shuts down. And the orange pulsing strip is really cool and soothing. Small footprint and stays cool to the touch, even when moving 43 gigs of data. SyncBack automatically synchronizes my music folder, so I don't ever have to do anything! It's simple and it just works. And that's all I can ask of it.

I bought this at a local store; plugged right in and started to xfer a couple hundred GBs of data that I wanted to store somewhere else. It lasted about 100 minutes before it "disapperaed" and couldn't be accessed.Hooked it up to a different computer, another 90 or so minutes and POOF! Turn it off for a few hours and sometimes a computer will see it; most times not.if your data is important to you then DO NOT USE THIS DEVICE.

Being used to dealing with PC peripherals I was concerned something was missing when I opened the box. Where was the driver CD? Where was the thick documentation on how to set it up? This wasn't missing. It just wasn't needed. I took it out of the box, plugged it in, connected the USB cable and it was ready to go. The enclosed quick setup guide pointed me to a knowledgebase article on the Western Digital site that showed the easy steps to re-partition this for Windows XP as NTFS so the whole 250GB would be recognized. All together this took maybe 10 minutes -- most of which was reading about creating the NTFS partition.The lack of backup software is not a real issue. A Google search for "backup freeware" led me to many choices one of which I setup quickly to backup my My Documents folder where all my docs, pix and music are to the drive. I don't believe it would be worth the extra money to have the backup software included.I love things that just work. This is one of those rare things.[Update 7/15/2010]I've been using this as a backup drive for my Windows Home Server and it's still going strong!

The thing looks cool in the picture, but it comes with a huge transformer that they don't show in the picture. I had thought it was powered by USB it cannot.

I bought my first My Book to act as my MacBook's primary hard drive when the computer is stationed at home about nine months ago. It was easy to set up and has performed well in daily use as a primary hard drive. I bought the second unit about six months ago to back up the My Book I use as a primary hard drive, and have been very happy with both units. In addition, the drive looks nice, does not take up much space and is relatively quiet.

For the price it is outstanding. No complaints yet and had it now for about a month. One down side is that you need to plug it into the wall to utilize it and there are no extra USB ports on the back of it. If you are looking for a mass storage device and have no issues with what I just stated, most definitely get it!

No hassles for me. This drive just works!First we set it up with USB 2. Worked great. However, we needed to remember to change the computer BIOS to disable booting from USB, or it assumed the WD was a boot disk.Then we transitioned to Firewire. It has worked perfectly between 2 computers. So far, it has stayed cool and quiet on fairly light use.I was delightfully surprised at how small and how attractive it is. I run it flat on the table top. Glad to have the metal casing.Couldn't be happier with it! Looking to get another one for another system.

When it works, it works great. Mine ran continuously for about 10 months. Then one day it made that "click-of-death" sound, and that was the end of it.

I should have read more reviews before buying this ($&$@(@ hard drive. It seems simple enough, take it out of the box, plug it in to power, and then use either the firewire or usb2.0 plugs to connect it to the computer. However, it simply would not work with my windows xp sp2 machine. Every time it would show up for about a second or two and then poof - gone. I looked and looked for a way to make it work - but all I found was bad reviews of other ones that worked for a few days and then died. If you are considering this hard drive, or perhaps any western digital - consider something else.

I bought the WD 250 gb hard drive to back up the my Master's research. I haven't had any problems with it. I have it formated it with two separate drives. One is fat32 format which has video for my xbox 360 . The other is NTFS format and is were I back up my research and class files. It would have been nice to have the auto backup utility that comes with the more expensive version but it's not that bad to just drag and drop files onto the drive. Overall I would recommend this drive if you want more storage or you want to back up your files. If you want the auto backup spend the extra money for the premium edition.
