So far this has been great, and has helped immensely to free up space on my computer. I did forget to reformat to that version that lets you transfer massive files over (I forget what it's called, but I'm sure other people here have mentioned it, and it's described in the brief manual as well); Once I reformatted though things have worked fine, and it's been a nice place to keep my hard drive in case something happens.I just hope it lasts.

I have 3 of these now all purchased at different times, the last one over 6 months ago. All 3 have been working fine. They are quiet enough and I like the fact that they turn themselves off with the PC. The price is right too.You need to remember that all your important data should be stored in more than one place. This applies no matter what storage device you are using.

The drive performs as expected and the price was great. It makes a good "online archive" of data from our server that doesn't need to consume RAID disk space.

I purchased this drive on October 28, by Nov. 15 it was no longer functioning. I purchased the drive to use as music storage -- spent dozens of hours digitizing 400+ albums. the drive became corrupted and impossible to restore without spending mucho dinero. The Western Digital service site is a disgrace. I have owned Maxtor and Seagates, I'll never purchase another WD.

I sent mine back becaue they took the on/off switch off. Why would i want to leave it running all the time? Will last longer if turn it off when not needed.

Simple and easy to use. Stores all my music, photos and others. A really good purchase. It has all the drivers already installed, all you have to do is plug it in and it sets itself up. It turns on and off with your computer. Having it keeps my computer running really quickly, and I have the piece of mind that my pictures are safe from computer glitches.It is compact and doesn't take up much room on my desk. A good product to have.

Purchased this drive as a mirror backup for a same drive. Unlike the other drive, the front button on this one is not pushable. Otherwise it works fine.

I've owned many an external drive in my time... pretty straightforward-- you turn it on, it is recognized by the computer, you do your thing, you turn it off. For the life of me I cannot figure out how to the "on" switch on this thing works! Turning it off is fine, but I usually have to unplug it to turn it back on. Apparently there is some kind of "button software" that goes along with it (which i downloaded from WD) to no avail. Why the unnecessary complication? Like I got time for this crap.And what's with the cheap plastic case? You can get a metal case hard drive for the same price. Looks nice in the picture, but trust me it's kinda junky in person...

This is a great product. Im very happy with it. Its refurbished, but It looks like new and it works like new. What i like about this product is that its not big at all. I thought it was going to take a lot of space in my desk and the price is good too. perfect buy!

I had one of these, and was planning to add another to my system (which does have two separate USB hubs). My Windows XP computer can only recognize one at a time. I talked to Tech support, and the guy actually suggested that I buy a different brand. I wish I had bought a Maxtor One Touch. Don't buy this.

Western Digital WDH1U5000N 500GB My Book Essential External Hard Drive runs in low temp, quiet, auto on/off with computer, fast, and cheap ($120 from circuit city in late April, 07). All was well till yesterday, Nov 28, 2007. The drive is still showing up, but not the content. All diagnostics reported no error. It still goes on and off with my computer (HP Media Center XP from Dec 06). Even the amount of free space is still showing up correctly. But not my 400G photos! What a waste! Will try "A.K. from Texas"'s trick (in his separate review in Feb 2007). But I haven't switched anything, or dropped the drive or any of that. Same power supply, same everything. Just the drive stopped displaying its content.Avoid if you can. Tech support is mostly a joke of all products, maybe save of Lexus cars. And I won't get a replacement from WD so I can go through the same pain again later on. Will try to get the data out and just throw it away for good so nobody else got tripped on a refurbished drive in the future.Will try VanTec case if nothing else works.

No complaints with this product. Amazon prime is great for the 2-day shipping alone. Timely delivery by Amazon. Plug and play....because I'm using it with a Mac, not sure how it works on a PC machine.

Mine lasted a whole 7 weeks. I tried calling Western Digital and gave up after 40 mins. Sent an email...never got a response. Do not be fooled by the cheap price...you get what you pay for in this case. And the USB really is significantly slower than fire wire.

I owned one of these without issue for about 4 months and decided to buy another (same size, same model) to double my external capacity.The new drive's firewire ports (both of them) didn't work. When I exchanged it for a new one, same thing - both firewire ports defective. You can't chalk this up to user error because I own an identical drive and troubleshooted everything on both drives (cross-testing them on different computers, tested the cables, power supplies, etc. etc.) and no dice - it's the ports.One faulty drive I'd chalk up to bad luck, but twice in a row is no coincidence. I'm getting rid of these drives (BOTH of them) because I don't want to trust my precious data to hardware that's habitually bad. I suggest looking at a different company. This isn't the first time I've had issues with a Western Digitial drive.

I sat it next to the computer and then began backing-up my folders. I did this successfully once a month for several months. Yesterday it stopped working. That's it...it just doesn't work. It is getting no power at all. I have moved it around the room and plugged it in to other outlets to no avail. There was no power surge, no thunderstorm, no dropping..nothing to explain what the heck happened to it. I cannot recommend this hard drive even if it does look "mahvelous".

I've heard some complaints about this line of external drives, so let me address those first. Yes, there is a slight "hum" or high frequency vibration. But I have several of these drives in different capacities and some hum a little, some not so much. Bottom line is that the noise is neither distracting nor bothersome. Besides, don't you get a little worried when any machine goes dead silent? Okay, now to the good stuff. Though designed as an "archival" device, I have streamed digital video from these drives full screen onto a Mac 23" widescreen monitor with no problems. I've used both USB versions and Firewire and both work fine. I've also run them for tens of hours at a stretch with no problems -- when not used they drop into "sleep mode". I suggest reformatting the drive if you use it on a Mac. This will make it compatible with the Mac's file system. It's easy and takes a couple of seconds. Also works with PCs just fine. The published capacity is misleading -- so what's new in the world, eh? If you buy a 320GB drive and are sweating a couple of gig, well... The obvious caveats: Don't bang or drop it -- especially when it's running. Always dismount it in the proper sequence.

I bought this external HD in December 2006. Now in November 2007, the unit clicks and clicks and clicks LOUDLY! My computer recognizes that the hardware is attached but does not show the drive in my computer so I can't even use the stupid thing!I didn't buy at Amazon. I wish I didn't buy it at all.

I have had a 320 GB harddrive from Western Digital also and I played a game throught that harddrive and it broke up. This one does not have any problems with that, it is unbelievable qiuet so I think it is worth it to buy this item. Go for it!

For anyone who is looking for a hard drive to back up files or just store files on an external hard drive, this hard drive will do the trick. USB 2.0 is widely used now, and therefore a single interface hard drive is enough for most consumers. It's very quiet and it doesn't take up that much space on the desk since it stands upright. It also turns on and off with the computer, which is handy.

This has a nice design although it is somewhat noisy sitting on my disk, a hmmmmmm. It is plug and play in the sense that you can just plug its usb cable into your computer and it will be recognized but in order to use all the "features" you have to load the WD button manager. Just another driver that sits in your system tray and all it does is enable the weird blue light on front to show how much space is used( I still have not figured out how to read it" and it allows you to power it down as long as no other programs are using it. Which means you have to close almost every program! There is no on/off switch!In Pcmag reviews, performance is lower than other external drives. I just got a 500gig sata drive and coolmax sata enclosure that has firewire, usb and sata ports for $160. The performance is better, it has a on/off switch and it is much quiter.

I purchased this drive so my family could share photos on a single drive that was accessible through the internet. While access is adequate from home, it is extremely slow for others so no one uses it. I have also had problems with accessing the drive. When I try to sign on, it says the drive is offline. It took more than a week to receive help from WD and they were unable to solve the problem. They referred me to the software vendor - I was never able to reach them. For some reason, running Registry Mechanic fixed this problem. I regret not having returned this drive during the 30 day period because now it just sits there unused.

I use this for backing up my music projects (I got burned once before and lost a bunch of good recordings when my hard drive crashed) and I have nothing but good things to say so far. It makes quick business of backing up large recording project files from my PC. I was also impressed by the sleek design and compact size of this, it fits perfectly on my desk book shelf. The only thing I would suggest is getting a longer USB cable, the one they provide is really short. Other than that it has been exactly what I was looking for!
