I'm a professional wedding photographer and I needed a portable external hard drive to maintain all the work that I am currently working on in my current season. After the work is done it gets backed up to a RAID system but I like to keep another copy on a portable hard drive.The problem with other drives? They are complete crap! I have tried Seagate's FreeAgent Go Flex (1.5TB) and the bridge/connection is worthless. I had one drive fail, had to buy Seagate's proprietary software to recover my files ($120!) and then sent it off under warranty for a replacement. The replacement was even worse. The connection again is so bad that I literally can't move (or move it) or the connection will be instantly lost. Sometimes it doesn't make a good connection and tells me the disc needs to be formatted. Western Drive isn't any better. First of all they are bulky and most aren't meant to be portable. The case is cheaply made and the metal connector to the USB after several plug-ins will detach from the plastic case and then you have to send it in to get another.So far, with my unit, I have no complaints. It works quietly, I feel comfortable about the case it was encased in and have had no data issues with it. It also still maintains the ability to be portable and light. I haven't tried the water test yet, however, I rarely would be using it in a pool or lagoon as the other equipment I use is not waterproof at all, but it's a very nice feature to have in case of such a situation.

USB 2.0 is a little laggy, but I can copy 1-3 Gb movie files to this in less than 2 minutes over USB 3.0. Even hooks right into my tv's USB port for easy movie watching. No special software or anything needed. So if you watch lots of 'backup copies' of your movies this is a great storage option. I didn't ever drop mine, but never felt worried tossing it onto a desk or something elevated.

My only difficulty is that the short cable that fits in the side of the drive is not at all flexible, making it difficult to use with some USB ports (e.g. the vertical ports on the Mac mini). Luckily, it also ships with a long cable that one can use in these situations.

I'm not sure what the designed purpose of this drive is (portable backup,video,data,durability, or all of the above) but I clocked it with the Blackmagic Disk Speed Test and it got 100.3MB/s write and 102.3MB/s read while being formatted as ExFat. This makes me happy since I can walk with the drive and use it on MAC and PC. Not sure on the long term tests yet, but this drive is running great. Not I got the Blue Aluminum drive and not the newest one with the silicone body.

Military grade is not an exaggeration. Might even survive being dropped in a lake if you remember to close the cap protecting the USB jack on it first. For maximum protection, put it in a case too.

I have only had this product for a month but within that month I have been impressed. I am a amateur photographer and this summer (2012) I decided that I wanted to organize my some 30,000 photos. I already have a 500 GB western Digital hard drive but I needed a secondary hard drive for photos only. I started looking around a found that there were some hard drives that are water/drop resistant. (And to a photographer, being able to protect your photos is a huge deal. )I wish that the hard drive was cheaper but I am happy that I invested in the silicon power rugged armor. Here is why...1. The hard drive is compact and easy to transport. The mini usb cord is quite useful.2. It is super easy to set up and transfer pictures3. I have dropped the hard drive a couple of times and the hard drive has had NO problems. I dropped the Silicon power rugged armor from the same height that broke a LaCie hard drive, the drop was only two feet but still.4. I have also spilled coffee on the hard drive and it still works great.I am extremely happy with this hard drive and would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a portable, safe, hard drive
