While researching an external 2.5 inch hard drive for backups for my laptop data, I came across the Silicon Power A80 that received a very positive CNET review. The unit offers fast USB 3.0 transfer speeds (backward compatible with USB 2.0), 3 year warranty, and military grade specs which means enhanced shock protection and water resistance. Silicon Power is not one of the better known brands in the hard drive arena, but the combination of features, a great Amazon price, and enhanced durability for only slightly more than a drive without these features, made me choose this unit. A nice touch, the unit comes with 2 USB 3.0 cables, a 4 inch one that stores neatly within the case housing, and a 24 inch one if that works better for you. A small point, because of the military grade specs, the housing is slightly larger than other brands, so it took a bit of research to find a properly sized storage case for the unit. The unit has been working flawlessly so far. So, if solid data protection is important to you, this drive is a great choice!

Length:: 3:13 MinsI work as a Karaoke DJ and tend to keep all of my music on an external hard drive. The problem with that is people spill drinks and get clumsy around equipment when they're drunk. So, I decided to do some research and look for an external HDD that would be able to support the large volume of music and at the same time present me with the comfort and confidence in knowing I have an external HDD that will withstand "torture".I ordered my A80 1TB HDD on February 13th and it arrived February 16th. So, right off the back their was a prompt and quick delivery of the product. When I opened the package I was very pleased to see the sleek, clean, ergonomic design but at the same time I could tell that this unit holds a solid quality feel. It comes with 2 USB 3.0 Super speed cables. 1 of which rests beautifully inside the side of the HDD case. Not only does the Silicon-Power A80 use the Asmedia AS1051 processor they are also one of the first USB 3.0 chipset certified manufacturers. Silicon-Power promises that this unit meets the water resistant standard and the U.S. military drop-test standards. I will run both the drop test and water test on video for this review.(COMING SOON)Before I run the drop and water tests I wanted to run a Benchmarking test. So, I used HD Tach. Now remember, anyone running any benchmark tests must understand that the mileage depends on hardware configuration. Basically, what type of computer hardware and software setup you're running.I'm running:Windows 7 Ultimate Service pack 1 32Bit OS2.67 GHz Intel Core2 DuoASUSTeK P5Q SE2 MOBO4GB RAMHD Tach1TB Silicon Power Armor A80 USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive : AVG Sequential Read 89.2 MB/S AVG Sequential Write 88.4 MB/S Burst Speed 127.3 MB/SThe result of this test helps me see that this unit IS FAST!!I did some further comparison to give people an idea of real time transfer rates.5GB File size -> USB 2.0 External HDD = 14:05 minutes5GB File size -> USB 3.0 External HDD = 4:25 minutesIt took about 3x longer to transfer a 5GB file using USB 2.0My suggestion to anyone looking for a high quality and durable External HDD. Get the A80!I'm 100% confident in the products Silicon-Power produces.

For the price, the data capacity is awesome. I am now on my 3rd 1TB drive. I will not buy anything that is not full sized USB, all my friends with broken HHD attachments have proven to me the major difference. I have owned WD's that fell over on the desk and they were sitting to become Dead paperweights. Not this thing, I do not treat it as nice as I should, I have three in my back pack, and they are beaten to death in AFGHANISTAN sand and heat. I have dropped at least 1 of my drives 3-4 times from 4-5 ft, no issues. One makes a slight hum that the other 2 do not, but until one fails, I am sure its just pointless noise. I have no intention of doing the water test, I am not that silly to test it for giggles.1 Year of Afghanistan torture, and its still working. Another previous owner stated it fell off the table and broke, These Have a 3 YEAR warranty, it sucks to lose data, but get it replaced, and buy a second one to prevent important losses.

I've only had this a couple of days. I had a little trouble with the registration application information on the drive itself, but that was taken care of by an email to vendor support. It was truly plug'n'play on my Windows 7 laptop. Speed seems quite good. However, I have been implementing "Bittorrent" drive encryption on it (to protect my business data), and it took about 24 hours to implement it.. I like the fact it includes a short cable (as well as a longer one), and an internal (sort of) place to store the cable. Encryption time was a bit of a surprise, but since that's about twice as long as my 500GB internal hard drives, I'll assume it's the OS and not the drive itself.Form and fit are very nice, and the finish is an attractive blue paint that appears (so far) resistant from scratching.I do not know if it's the fastest USB3 drive yet, but speed seems very good.RECOMMENDED.

This hard drive is exactly what I expected, sturdy, fast, portable and reliable.I highly recommend this external hard drive. I just unboxed it in my lap and dropped it onto my floor, although it was carpeted I would have been upset had it been my standard Iomega external hard drive. But with this drive, I was not concerned.I haven't tested any of its features out besides that initial small fall and don't plan on it but it is definitely fast enough on my 2009 Macbook Aluminum Unibody with USB 2.0. I wish I had Firewire, USB 3.0 or Thunderbolt but sadly I don't but this hard drive still fits the bill.At 1TB it is plenty of storage for Time Machine and running Ableton Suite (a music sequencing software). I loaded about 50GB of MIDI sounds (musical sounds) onto this hard drive as well as Time Machine and still have over 900 GB free. Not bad! This will be a great drive for me while I travel around the world from hotel to hotel doing business work---sadly not DJing just yet.I hope this works as well for you as it does me.

I did my own accidental drop-test and dropped the Water-Resistant 1TB off a table at a cafe onto a solid hardwood floor covering cement. It wasn't damaged at all, either functionally or it's good-looking blue case. I've had zero problems over the last year with this drive on a Win7 x64bit machine. It's always recognized. That's more than I can say for other usb devices, including a good many thumb drives. My only con is I wish they made a 2 TB version. I want a drive that is a carry-along 'backup-everything' plus a work drive for projects when I'm on the road. I prefer to keep things consolidated, and not 1 drive with this backup, 1 with that. 1TB isn't enough for that purpose. So I'm now checking out the WD Passport for an upgrade.

I was really looking forward to getting the Silicon Power Rugged Armor A80 External hard drive. I am not that gentle with my gear when I am using it on location and it has to hold up and take a beating. I transfer large video files and they can take over an hour using my firewire 800 cable. I went with USB 3.0 on this and when I tried to transfer some files they wouldn't. I read the fine print and it says it will only transfer USB 2.0 with a Mac. I was very disappointed about that. I will not buy another one and have been purchasing the WD Passport. Looks good, sounds good but it didn't deliver. Do not use this with your Mac. You will be very disappointed.
