I was really looking forward to getting the Silicon Power Rugged Armor A80 External hard drive. I am not that gentle with my gear when I am using it on location and it has to hold up and take a beating. I transfer large video files and they can take over an hour using my firewire 800 cable. I went with USB 3.0 on this and when I tried to transfer some files they wouldn't. I read the fine print and it says it will only transfer USB 2.0 with a Mac. I was very disappointed about that. I will not buy another one and have been purchasing the WD Passport. Looks good, sounds good but it didn't deliver. Do not use this with your Mac. You will be very disappointed.

I am very disappointed in this external hard drive. I loaded a bunch of critical back up files onto the disk. Then the disk broke (stopped spinning) after 4 months of light use. I am unable to retrieve any files as the disk is not recognized by any computer. The device did not fall or drop, or get wet or anything that would cause it to fail internally. It just stopped working. I guess the internal hardware is made by Western Digital, which is notoriously unreliable. If I had known I was getting WD in a fancy case with a fancy name--I would NEVER have bought WD. Now I have lost critical files that cannot be recovered because the disk won't spin.

Plus I've dropped mine twice from about 1 ft and until now nothing happened.Also, the little cable attached to the body is too small to use with desktops, but could be handy if you're connecting it to a laptop (which I guess is what most people will use it for).

If anything were to happen to my computer I don't have to worry about losing my data. It has great transfer speed and more than enough space for anything casual, Im trying to think of things to put on it to fill it up not even a quarter of the way so far, will probably use it for storing all my media and such, like videos. I have been using the short cable that comes with inside the casing of the hard drive since its short and Im using my laptop right next to it but It is good that they provided an extra, longer cable which I expect I will have to use if I want to connect to computers that dont have a usb port near a surface to rest it on.

I bought this on 2/29/2012 and it works great when it decides it wants to work. For some reason when I plug it into usb 3.0 port it doesn't get recognized or keeps telling me I need to reformat it. Very annoying to say the least. Works with usb 2.0 ports just fine but the point of buying a 3.0 capable external hard drive is using the 3.0 port. Also emits a high pitched noise that's very annoying when its plugged in. Even when the pc is turned off it makes the noise.Now, the high pitched noise is probably due to my wifi router on my desk (as far away from hard drive as possible) so i deal with it when i need to plug it in. As for it not being recognized I assume it's probably a driver issue so it's my fault, but I can't figure it out.When it does work it's very fast. My old My Passport HD is much much slower than this. I will pay extra money for usb 3.0 forever after using this HD. It is simply 10 times faster than usb 2.0. I have no real complaints with it at all except for the aforementioned user error complaints. I haven't tested the drop tests or water resistance specs, nor do I plan on it. Who in there right mind would? Something I find VERY annoying is that I can't find a case large enough to put this thing into. It is rather large at 3-3/4"x5-5/8". I figure that's why it's built to meet military stress specs. I bought a Nintendo DS case that works but is quite bulky. With a little careful moding of the DS case I'm now able to carry the HD plus Ipod touch, cables, sd cards, flash drives, etc. Just throwin some ideas at you if u want a case for it.As far as the product itself is concerned I give it 5/5 stars. As for my personal experience with the product I give it 4/5 stars only because of the case issue. I wont let my laziness bias my opinion and experience of a great product.

Then I started reading the reviews of the other portable drives, and it seems about all the same. Either they work great forever, or they fail. Sounds like all electronics! We've had this particular drive about two months, and so far, it's great. We also have WD Passport, Buffalo Mini-station, Fantom 3T, etc. They all seem about the same to me. So what else can I tell you? Just so far, so good. ;)

You're reading this because you want/need external storage that is reliable, portable, and fast. There is a video on youtube you should see. I had no part in its creation, I'm not trying to promote the uploader, I just want you to see what sealed the deal for me.If you don't have the ability to find and/or view that video let me run it down for you. Some guy in Europe flushes the hard drive in a rather powerful toilet, plugs it into a PC and it works. He then uses a small torch on it, and it works. Then he runs over it with a Fiat and of course it still worked. There are other videos but that is the one that convinced me to go with Silicon Power.UPS literally tossed this package onto my brick porch from at least 5 feet away, over a handrail. I know because I watched it happen. The box from amazon only had the hard drive in its packaging, no bubble wrap, no padding. I've had this for a month and a half now. I immediately started loading it up with content to alleviate my PC's hard drive. I don't have USB 3.0 but it works fine with 2.0. The first task I gave it was transferring 60 gigs. It took almost 4 hours which seemed like a long time. However every other transfer since then has been remarkably faster. Just the other day I got 45 gigs transferred in just over half an hour. My PC is Win7 dualcore 2.5 ghz i5 with 4 gigs of ram. I didn't have any other programs running during the transfers I'm using for examples. Files under a gig take under a minute. I have had this drive running for over 6 hours watching movies and there were no signs of it heating up.Now to my only complaint. The short length usb connector that sits in the unit is simply too short and comes disconnected way too easily. Its a minor issue but I do use this with a laptop and the longer cord that is included doesn't have the disconnection issue so I end up using it.
