Three days ago we were in (insert retail store name here) and we saw it...The gleaming white box behind the glass...It was...WII!!!
Like so many others, we had been scouring the aisles of every store that carries it since last November and finally we reaped our reward. I think that's the only way to get it; just randomly.
Anyway, we happily took it home, brimming with the highest of expectations, and the Wii delivered!!
The Wii is truly a console for the whole family. Even our (VERY) easily frustrated four-year-old was bowling and pitching baseballs like a pro within minutes of hooking it up. That's not to say it isn't fun and challenging for parents, too. It is. In fact, I don't think the thing has been off for longer than 10 or so hours since we brought it home! We only have the Wii Sports and the one remote at the moment, but we have a second remote and a few games on order now.

I love the Wii and it is a ton of fun for the whole family, but there are a few things that it is lacking.
1. No HDMI (component video with an extra cable is the best you will do)
2. No digital audio (no coax, optical, or HDMI audio)
I am a little confused why Nintindo would leave these things out. Even the cheapest DVD players for the past 2 years have had HDMI.
But, if you can overlook these things, the Wii is great and you and your kids will love it. Now, good luck finding one!

I had a few concerns going into the purchase, but I loved the idea behind the wiimote so much that I was willing to buy one anyway. Am I ever glad I did. My two major concerns were (a) would the remote be responsive enough and (b) would I be able to play it with my projector- because I wouldn't be able to stand right in front of the screen- and play as well as a person with a traditional style television. It turns out that the remote is incredibly responsive. The games I've played so far have been great, and wii sports (which is just a simple little free demo) is great. It's fun and it really makes you feel like you're part of the game. The projector hasn't been a problem- the system can detect me at various places in the room. Also, I think I should make a comment on the overall design; the console is small, sleek, and pretty enough to leave out on a shelf, and the remote is perfectly sized, weighted, and designed (the layout of the buttons). I was surprised it fit my hand so well given that I'm over 6'2" and have fairly large hands, but it worked as well for me as it did for my 13 year old brother-in-law.
Which brings me to my final comment- my brother-in-law. He went with me to pick up my system (because my wife didn't want to stay up late for the midnight release), but he made it very clear that he was a Sony guy. He even argued with the people in the store when we were grabbing our wii. Then something amazing happened- he actually played some of the games. By the time he left a few hours ago he was saying "I gotta get this for Christmas." If that doesn't tell you that this system is good, then I don't know what will. Get one for yourself, you won't be disappointed.

Take the advice of a hardcore gamer, this is defintely a fun and promising system. You will love it when you play it. Buy this system! Even if you dont like the games out right now, you have the Virtual Console and you can download all the old games you used to love!

It is true that the Wii does not have the graphics capabilities of some of its competitors, but `Great Graphics' do not make a great game. Great graphics can only make a good game better. They certainly can't turn a poor game into a great game, just because it `looks' better. Well, the Wii does not need great graphics, because it is already a great gaming system.
I am primarily interested in games for the FUN that they create. After all, if they aren't fun, then why would anyone want to play them?
I am lucky enough to own a Wii. I will tell you that it ain't so cheap. By the time you buy the basic system for $250 (That is LIST PRICE. Good luck getting one.), then add 3 more controllers (Wimotes plus Nunchucks) at about $70 a set (you WILL want to buy 3 extra controller sets, as soon as you can), then add 10 games at $50 each, you will be out around $1000. That is a lot to spend if you just want some `good games' and you aren't a hard core gamer. But the Wii is worth it. The games are great FUN. Though the graphics of Wii might someday be upgraded, the game play probably can't be improved. The Wii game play has already set the standard for all future gaming systems. It is revolutionary, intuitive and interactive, all at the same time. As a group game, social game and party game, it won't be topped for years to come. So, my verdict is that THIS is the game for people who want to have a GOOD time. It is surprisingly easy, intuitive and engrossing, all at once. Describing it is like desribing a roller coaster ride. You have to EXPERIENCE it to really understand it. Though it will please gamers and non-gamers alike, if you like to party, make sure to get the Wii.

Then, I have to admit, games stopped being fun. They were work with 50 buttons and combos to memorize. All this work for something that is supposed to be relaxing after a hard day at the office?
My parents asked me if I wanted a WII for Christmas. At first I told them no. That was until I played it. My Uncle got one and I loved it. The game play was incredible - natural movements with an occasional one or two buttons. I had to have one and joined the rat race to get one for Christmas. I couldn't find one but the manager at EB came through for me on the day after. I was so excited.
When I got it home and hooked it up, everyone was immediately impressed with how easy and fun it is. I can't tell you the number of Christmas, New Years, and January WII parties I've had. One of the best features is the Virtual Console that lets you download classic games by using WII points. Nintendo releases 4 games every Monday with games from the original NES, SNES, N64, Genesis, and the TurboGraphix 16. I've downloaded a few but so far my favorite is Bomberman '93 for the TurboGraphix 16.
Pros: great price, built in WiFi, comfortable controllers, downwards compatible with Game Cube games, controllers, and accessories, Virtual Console allows you to play the classics
Cons: virtual console games are too expensive ($[...] for a NES game you can get at Martha's garage sale down the street for [...]

We were lucky enough to get chosen in the Vote drawing. Having it arrive before Christmas was perfect because the whole family was home and could try it out. My 65 year old dad loves the bowling! The Wii is so innovative yet instinctive in its design. With Wii Sports, the movements are the natural motions you would perform if you were really playing. The physical involvement of the games is genius. It is so physical we are actually a little sore from playing! The unexpected consequence of that is we want to take breaks in between. You can get a satisfying gaming experience within an hour, so you're not sucked into spending your whole day playing.
You could just get the system without buying anything else and be happy. One controller works out, though you have to switch each time. You cannot play versus each other without another one. We'll likely get another controller soon. Four days after the system arrived I bought The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess from Target; it was on sale. Zelda is my fiance's favorite Nintendo series and this one does not disappoint.
All my expectations for the Wii have been surpassed and I am always amazed to see what else can be done in the games using the remote. It is just like nothing you have ever played. The whole family will really enjoy this and get a little workout, too!

For any parents who are planning on purchasing this, let me give you some advice. Wii Sports which comes with it will provide many hours of enjoyment. In fact, I bought Rayman's Rabbits for the minigames, since my youngest (6) likes those alot. In reality, in the four days we have had it, we have been playing only Wii Sports. While none of the games is really indepth, they are easy to pick up and play. We have probably had the most fun bowling. Hats off to Nintendo for such a great included game, and showing the possibilities of the system.
I also purchased Zelda for myself, and already put in 4+ hours. Having played all the Zelda's on the various systems, this one was a must have. I am really enjoying it.
One other point - creating the Miis is a blast. We spent about a half hour as a family creating all our Miis. And it is cool how they show up in the various Wii Sports games, even if they are not actually the ones playing.
All in all, Nintendo has finally created a game system for the whole family. No, it doesn't have cutting edge graphics, but it is a lot of fun to play. Even my wife enjoys bowling, and she is definitely not a "gamer". And what other system can make you sore the next morning (aka Boxing).
Get one for yourself as soon as you can. You will not be disappointed!

It's one of the best purchases I have ever made!

My only problems are with the controller. In golf, when you try to lightly tap the ball into the hole, it doesn't work. It just doesn't seem to pick up the movement until you move your hand backwards. That's also a problem (inverting the motion of the controller). Even if you start with your hand positioned exactly as the character's, it can invert the motion, or not even pick it up.
Also with boxing, it really can't seem to pick up the motion very well at all. We figured out the main problem is that we are punching too quickly, but even when slowing down, the controller doesn't always pick up the motion. Also, when trying to block, holding your hands completely together doesn't put your character's arms together. We realized that the only way for the characters to block is by crossing our arms. Nothing is in the way when this happens either, so it's pretty frustrating.
And in bowling, the ball will curve to the left, even when someone is holding their arm completely straight, or even try curving their hand towards the right.
Besides all those minor problems, the Wii really is fun. Everyone has really gotten into the game and made their own characters. (Which is also a fun process).

Nw if only the accesories and games would lower in price a little.......

Graphics- 9/10 The graphics are better than what I expected as not much was expected but the graphics in Zelda are amazing. The character models in Wii sports are very basic but it's free so I can't complain.
Gameplay-10/10 The gameplay in these games are amazing. The interactivity with the controller and games is great as it makes you feel connected to them. Your arms do not get tired unless you play wii sports for 6 hours in a row (as I did)
Value-8.5/10 As great of a deal this is I was expecting something less. But for a console this great I would pay anything. It comes with a free game so again I can't complain.
Games-9.5/10 There was a great selection of games on launch day but I was expecting Mario and Smash Bros. but we got Zelda, Tony Hawk and many others as they will tide me over until the 2007 load. For games I reccomend Spongebob Squarepants:Creature from the Krusty Krab and Zelda Twilight Princess.
Overall-9.0/10 While the price is not as low as expected and the games that were promised did not show up on day one, there is plenty to keep you busy and the graphics are definently a step up from Gamecube but even though they are not as good as the other consoles the are very nice. So if your looking for a cheap console that provides alot of fun for families, this is your console. It looks like Nintendo has finally won the war.

I own a wii. Twilight Princess is amazing, Mario Galaxy is amazing, Metroid is perfect. These are big budget titles that have huge production values. It's the game, not the wii. Third party mini-game titles are not the entire systems worth. Do your homework on the games and you'll see.
