First dslr camera purchase and I have to say it was money well spent. The picture quality is amazing with 16.2mp, and 1080 hd video quality is not to be overlooked. The camera controls are a bit tricky but that's why you purchase a camera with so many functions. Certainly not only for point and click, but has auto features that would trump any consumer level camera. I recommend setting aside some extra cash to purchase other lenses so that you can really appreciate this camera. Packed with the 18-55 mm lens, this camera is a definate must have for any beginning photographer.

Great item, received after a few weeks. But have a small problem with the card reader and the 16gb sd card. Card reader isn't working on my iMac and sometimes the SD Card gives me an error and i can't view the photos i shot on the camera, but at least i don't loose them. Other than that, VERY GOOD product. Cheers.

For those of you that want a DSLR camera without the weight of a D300 or D3 or D7000 then this camera is the one. Much better than D3100 with larger screen and higher resolution. I put a 70-300mm on it too and it is a little small on the end of that big lens but it works great.I note that the D5100 vs the D300s lacks the remote master flash option for controlling other SB flashes but I am not going to rely on infrared and will use radio frequency transmitters. Considering the price and features, this is Nikon's best deal by far.

The Nikon D5100 is a great camera for beginner photographers, wanting to explore more than point and shoot photography. Handles well, the additional book that Amazon carries that is specific for the D5100 is a great addition, giving very specific instructions on how to be more creative!

I've been on the hobby for about 5 year now, my last camera was a Nikon D60 and let me tell you, this D5100 completely obliterates the D60, it even outperforms the D90 as this camera has the same excellent sensor as the High end Nikon D7000, just in a smaller package, sadly it does not have an integrated autofocus motor in the body so AF it only works on newer AF-S lenses, but that is not a problem anymore because we have a big variety of AF-S lenses.Image quality is superb, specially on low light conditions, we can crank up the ISO Speed and it looks great, even at ISO 6400. Video quality is just as great but my true passion is photography so I can't get deep into reviewing the video recording feature.If you want the BEST DSLR for under 1000 Dollars this is the one to get.

Lots of features. Good camera for the beginner who wants a camera that will not limit them in the future and has many features for the professional as well. Large screen which folds away when not needed. Will save photos in BOTH JPEG and RAW. I did a lot of research before buying and this camera beat competitors in features and performance. I would recommend a card reader however. The rubber cover over the cable connections seems a little flimsy. I decided to get a card reader instead of toggling the cover over and over again. Other than that - love it.

this is my first dslr camera. d5100. and i must say i am amazed by such clarity and focus in the pics. it's very easy to use. 18-55mm vr lens is really good in taking normal pics. i must say always go for vr lens. without vr, you can't get a good clairty without using tripod.i am loving this camera. thanks

This is my first SLR camera, and it took a lot of research to decide on this one. It;s in the top three greatest purchases I Have ever made! Besides the obvious factors of upgrading from a 5 MP Sony cyber shot, this thing just simply amazes me at the clarity and definition of the photos. I have fell in love with the auto-bracketing feature to create HDR shots. I have yet to try the video however, so when I do I will update the post.

I don't want to explain how good this camera is. Let me put it simple.If your purpose is mostly Outdoor - this is the Best Camera (Nikon D5100)If your purpose is mostly Indoor - then please consider buying Canon T2i.Hope this would help.

I recently purchased this Nikon D5100 camera and have since replaced the kit lens with the Nikon 18-200mm VRll and have a 35mm f/1.8G AF-S on order. I have absolutely no complaints about this camera or it's lens, everything works perfectly. I don't mind the use of a plastic body for lighter weight as there's enough heft to this camera (and the 18-200 lens) to make you aware that you are holding something of significant value. I've reassigned the 'Fn' button to adjust the ISO on the fly since I primarily use aperture priority (nice touch btw). I'm currently looking into the ideal camera bag for travel... possibly the Lowepro Fastback 250, as I want to keep the 18-200 lens attached.The built-in flash does NOT work as 'commander' for wireless flash use... not a deal breaker though.

I can NOT review the Nikon D5100 other than to say this camera was too small for my hands. I purchased the Nikon through Shutterbug and return the camera within a week and was accused by Shutterbug of scratching the LCD and I was charged 15% restocking fee with that excuse.Now they are negotiating with me because of my negative feedback about my very unhappy experience with my purchase from Shutterbug through Amazon.com. I will NOT negotiate for a better review because I know that I returned the Nikon D5100 in the very same condition that I received it. I will only accept a 100% money back response.I am looking at purchasing the Nikon D7000; however I will NOT consider purchasing from Shutterbug through Amazon.com.

If you are coming across this camera and trying to compare it with other similar products within this category, I would definitely suggest this camera, its a must buy.Initially when I started my research I got stuck on 2 cams: Canon EOS Rebel T3i and Nikon D5100 but after using both these cameras at a local shop, I fell in love with lethal beauty, ofcourse Nikon D5100, its slim, feature pack and above all whenever its camera, Nikon should be the default choice.Believe this non-fancy review and you won't regret your purchase.Thanks

As soon as I received my D5100 Nikon I started clicking away, it took me a while but I am getting the hang of it. I am still learning how to use it and still finding new ways and features this camera has. I know I am going to have lots of fun using my new Nikon D5100 with all the cool effects it has to offer.

Just one thing I can add to the reviews: The Nikon 5100 has a new type of Raw images that is not, and will not, be supported by CS4 and earlier versions of Photoshop. This is a huge disappointment to me as I spent my whole budget on camera, and wasn't prepared to buy a new version of Photoshop just to be able to work with Raw images.

I was looking for a SLR which was not very bulky and had all the features for taking great photos. The 5100 fitted the requirement and i am happy that i bought it.Its taking great pictures, specially the low light ones at high ISO come out quite well. The HD video is also a good thing to have though the mic picks up the auto focus sound which is quite irritating. I guess an external mic would sort that. The supplied battery lasts sufficiently long.One problem that i have faced is that the memory card cover opens up quite easily. More setting buttons would have helped.

Love this camera. It's user friendly and takes terrific pictures. Haven't used the video yet but have taken several hundred pictures with 18-55mm lens as well as zoom lens. All turn out great. The effects setting is really cool. After tons of research and almost buying a Canon T2, I found this camera does more, had better reviews and has better picture quality overall. The MP's really don't make that much difference if you don't have great lens. And this camera does. Looking for a great buy in an SLR. Buy this camera!

For a $899 you'd expect that your camera could shoot natural colors, right? None of the color preset options on the D5100 render natural red! Every red flower has indistinguishable detail due to over-blown red. Neither the standard or neutral settings solved the problem. I don't want get involved in time consuming RAW post processing to achieve what should be a natural photo. With all the scene modes and options on the camera why can't Nikon (the experts in color) get this right? Nikon has a 4 axis color chart where you can tweek their colors in a sub-menu but that option is too coarse for fine tuning. Though the camera has a lot of great features, not being to balance jpeg red color will make me return it to the store.

This is the best camera I have used. Last year I had purchased and used Nikon D5000. But this year I decided to buy this D5100. This is just great. Picture quality is just excellent. No words to express it. I took it for my hiking trip to Mount Washington. The pictures came so so good..It is Just as if i didn't see the views so clear in my own eyes.. Unbelievable ..Only thing which I don't like to changing the lenses frequently.. But that's the way it is..I have to deal with that..Otherwise pay some fat bucks for a better lense..

Nikon did themselves proud with this new design. The features packed in it, make it one of the best cameras for the money. It's a matter of preference between it and the new Cannon. The images are crisp and full of detail and the color is balanced and true. The HD video sets the standard that others will have to quickly hustle to match. My only wish is that it had a full frame sensor rather than the DX format, but for my use, I will probably never see the difference. I am totally stoked with this camera. It also fits the hand well.

I own the D3100 and I purchased the D5100 to have a second camera. I use the D3100 for my telephoto lens and the D5100 for my regular lens. That was the main reason to buy it, but I also love the AEB and HDR features on the D5100.

I am still playing with this camera.... I love the pictures with Automatic Mode and Flash on.... As soon as I shut off Flash my pictures start coming out really shakey.... I might need to teach myself to some setting probably which I am missing.Over All, I love the camera... and keep clicking...

Excellent camera; this is my first digital SLR, I have not explode all the good functions available because I opened the package and immediately started to use it to capture vacation pictures but I was not hard to shoot first photographs. Image and video quality is amazing. A must buy for this camera should a better lense -I was suggested to acquire a 16-85mm for the everyday scenarios- because the included one - 18-55mm- has only 3X zoom

Bought this as a gift for my wife for mothers day. We had been reviewing different cameras and this one had it all for the price. Loved that it came with the lens instead of having to purchase after the fact. We really liked the mega pixels and the fact that it has video recording in HD. Pictures and video are incredible. When we compare our pictures we took from our 10mp point and shoot camera with our new camera its like looking at a TV at 720p vs a flat screen with 1080p. Even our pictures look like High Def now!Love this camera and definitely recommend it!

The NIKON D5100 packed with many features and a great value for price. It is very user friendly and anyone with little photography knowledge can use this camera efficiently. The rotating LCD monitor would be a great advantage for capturing in different angles, which is not possible with other DSLR cameras.I really got amazed with the output from this camera and would definitely recommend this to everyone.

I upgraded from the Nikon D70s and was excited to have an articulated screen with a live view because I often want to take pictures from either a high or low angle and sometimes take self portraits. Unfortunately the shutter lag when using Live View is so slow that I could never use it for anything involving people.

I was looking for an upgrade to the digital slr world. I read the reviews on this camera and the price was great! Added the 55-300 lens with the special deal they had to save even more money! The camera works great! I have not had any problems yet or complaints. Can't wait to use it more!

Great DSLR camera to start out with. Making my self taught, gradual steps from Auto (including Scenes/Effects) to Shutter priority and Apert Priority. Will get to Manual soon, when I graduate myself there. That's the great thing about this camera, it can ease you into the hobby and make you feel like a professional in no time!Highly recommended.

The D5100 is my new baby. Better than Canon T3i and almost like a D7000!The swivel LCD is cool, but I honestly don't use it much for live-view.I'm just awed by how great this camera is for the price. I have a good feeling that I'll be satisfied with this thing for a while.
