I wanted to get a DSLR camera to take pictures in a low-light setting. Torn between the Canon Rebel T3i and the Nikon D5100, I finally made the decision to purchase the Nikon D5100. So, with a .25 difference, the two cameras a certainly excellent options for DSLR, especially for the price range.I consider myself a hobbyist photographer owning a Nikon D80 that I have had for years shooting varies subjects: family reunions, anniversaries, portraits, landscapes, animals, sports events, etc. With this in mind, I have always been partial to Nikon's usability. However, I have heard from various friends about how wonderful the Canon Rebel is so I welcomed the opportunity to test it out myself. Indeed, they did not steer me wrong, the Canon Rebel T3i is wonderful, but it is not the option I decided to take for low-light photograph.I am taking pictures in low-light settings, where Nikon's flash consistency excels. Although the T3i shoots 3.7 frames per second and the Nikon shoots 4 frames per second, the difference is not very noticeable. However, the D5100 has distortion control (T3i does not) and a longer battery life.I am also impressed with Nikon's overall generic settings--auto,portrait, etc. I wanted a camera that would be user friendly in case someone else wanted to try using the camera, etc.

No complaints with the camera. I have enjoyed my entry into DSLR cameras from the point and shoot realm and am very happy with my choice.

The D5100 is a camera that any moderately proficient shooter would enjoy - I know I do. I've been shooting for close to 40 years, and this is an outstanding camera; plenty of effects, settings and options to keep you learning the camera for weeks. But do yourself a favor and purchase the body only. The 18-55mm kit lens is ok if you want ok images. If you want clear, sharp and vivid images, opt to spend a little extra money on quality glass (lens). If I was reviewing only the camera, it would get 5 stars. As it is, the 18-55mm lens is adequate... not very good nor excellent.

This was purchased as a gift for our 19 year old who has a real interest in photograph. He has fallen in love with the Nikon gem and is rarely seen without it. Easy to use - great photos as well.

This is my first DLSR and am a beginner interms of DLSR but not photography. I already own a Nikon p500 super zoom camera that has all Manual options, but this is many folds better one.trying to use Aperture, shutter and macro options, but my portrait is really awesome. Single point focus is what always drives me crazy.Yet to explore many options. I am very happy till now.

A friend of mine has a D700, and I was reluctant to buy anything less because I knew how great it was. With the right manipulation, this camera is every bit as good as the D700! Keep it in manual, and shoot away!

Everything I wanted in a camera. Easy to use. Not a heavy camera. Still learning to use different functions. I can take pictures as fast as I want to and they still come out clear.

This camera deserves a mention, you are thoroughly impressed by the quality of the pictures when you take photos, when I received my package contained everything and check all accessories, the quality of materials is very good, the screen has high brightness and lens it brings is more than enough to get decent photographs, we must stress that comes with a small flash incomporado on top.

love it!!! the color quality is better than the cannon I just upgraded from. the website link that comes with step by step how to do everything and once you see it and do it with the instructions its pretty easy to work.....mine also came with a 55mm lens which I also love it. can switch the lens from manual or auto focus. also have a cheat sheet you can but to attch to your camera case

You can spend a lot of money on cameras, this one is worth the money. Many of my friends swear by the Cannon 5D and beyond - they can be snobby - I can't afford that. When I started researching I looked at five different cameras and fell on this one for features and cost. I highly recommend buying this camera and then buying a Tamron AF 18-200 lens (workhorse multipurpose) or going for the lens you want. I use mine for video, in fact, my desire to buy this one had to do with the mic input on the side panel. I did buy a 28 mm prime lens, so if I ever upgrade cameras, I can still use the lens. I use this camera constantly and get great video - the average person cannot tell the difference in quality.

This camera is wonderful. It is perfect for portraiture, events, documentary photographing, It is really easy to use if you know anything about DSLRs, I swapped out my D3000 for this D5100 and the transition has been very smooth. It has a lot more options - one that I'm loving is the remote shutter. I haven't used video much since I got it (about a week ago), but I expect to have a lot of fun with that option as well. No complaints so far!

This was my first time shopping around for a nice entry level DSLR camera. I have had a 7 year old point and shoot camera. I was deciding to go with the D3200 but a photography hobbyist friend mentioned and recommended me this camera over the D3200. The price was a 100 bucks less but was only for the body. I purchased a Sigma 18-200 lens and love my new camera. Cant go wrong.

nikkon SLR camera what i can said , my wife love it as she love good pictures , this is the first SLR camera i bouth and i very happy with it even more my wife as was her present.

Not recommended for video enthusiasts looking to get that film look. I am keeping mine, but only after months of practice and because I'd rather spend money on all the other gear, not just the camera. Takes amazing shots with a fast lens. 50mm 1.4 highly recommended (although keep in mind if will act like a 75mm on this DX format camera).

This Was The Perfect Camera! The Same As The Nikon 3200(Same Price), But The 3200 Has 24 Mega Pixels And The 5100 Has a Flip Out Screen For Better viewing. The One Thing I've Realized I Want Now But Didn't Get With The 5100 Was 'Wifi' capability. The 3200 Does Come With This And The New 5200 Does as Well. This Camera Does All You Need For The Beginner And The Shutter speed And ISO Range Is Great For The Pro. a Lot Of Features And a Great Starting Lens. Of Course Your Next Purchase Will Be a200mm/300mm Zoom lens But For The Beginner That Can Wait While You hone Your Skills a Bit.

Excellent in low light, and in every setting. I find new settings every day. This was my first DSLR and I was slightly skeptic about any camera I wanted and I picked the right one. From the lens selections to the image quality, it's nearly perfect.I only wish the waterproof casing was less expensive and it took faster continuous shots. I've been converted from Canon Powershots to Nikon. :3

I'm a newbie into DSLR world. Moving from bridge camera to D5100 was a big decision and I'm not regretting :)This little tool is designed for newbies like me. All controls are freaking easy to understand; ease of use is stunningly great because of the extra buttons placed on the right places to get quickly into the desired menus in split seconds. You don't need to browse through all the menus to get to the place that you need. Most of the configurations are only 3-4 clicks away.The 18-55 nikkor lens that comes with this is giving perfect pictures. The vibration reduction feature build into this, in my opinion is just a plus, not a necessity on a low zoom lens. I'm using a manual focus super zoom 28-300 Sigma along with this. Sigma 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 DG Macro Aspherical Lens for Nikon AFD Cameras which is giving fabulous pictures with no shakes up to, may be, 100-150. Changing lens is just a piece of cake. The built of the body is perfect for me to get the finest possible hold and grip.One other thing that i was skeptical about is the d-movie. It didn't disappoint me at all, no jerks, no zoom issues while recoding (you can zoom, and continuous auto-focus does work!).What makes me impressed is the built-in "effects" feature. You can take those pictures which was once possible only by seasoned professional photographers!!! Just go over the guide and tutor videos any newbie can take better than average pictures within no time; no kidding!It is worth commenting about the battery. In 1.5 hrs you will get it fully charged! Haven't gone on a day long trip yet, to know how long does the power lasts on continuous shooting. But, by far, it is giving me reasonably good mileage.What I'm missing================1) Command dial could have been bit more intelligent. If i want to set the aperture or shutter speed it requires several turns.. rather it could have made touch sensitive to go faster if i dial it faster.2) Two more buttons; like zoom buttons in point-n-shoot cameras to control ISO.

I sold my D3100 and purchased the D5100. I really liked my D3100, but there are 2 features I wanted that the D5100 has: 1.) bracketing function and 2.) ISO 1/3 increments. I like HDR photography, and the 3 exposure bracketing mode makes it easier to do on the D5100 (although I wish it had a 5 exposure bracketing mode). I take a lot of night photos, and the D3100 would only go from 800 to 1600 to 3200. The D5100 will let you shoot at ISO 1000, 1250, 2000, etc. The high ISO performance on the D3100 is very good, but it is outstanding/phenomenal on the D5100. I have taken quite a few ISO 5000 and 6400 photos on the D5100 that come out awesome with almost no noise, even with the stock lens. I recently took a photo at ISO 5000 and posted on flickr that looks like ISO 200 on almost any other camera I have ever used, including my Panasonic GH1. I will share it on Amazon. I believe the incredible low light, high ISO performance is because the D5100 shares the same sensor as the D7000. So this is a big upgrade from the D3100 as far as the sensor in low light environments. I have taken about 500 photos so far, and pictures come out tack sharp with the stock lens. Combined with the 35 mm F1.8 Nikon lens, the camera takes as fantastic of pictures as I could possibly imagine. Battery life is incredible--after 500 pics the battery indicator still showed the full 3 bars. I also like the adjustable swivel screen for when I am shooting on a tripod or above my head. The one thing I do not like about the camera are the placement of the buttons and settings. There is not a button for ISO; you have to press the "i" button then scroll down on the screen and change it. You could assign ISO to the Fn button (which is in a difficult location on the left side of the camera), but then you can't set the camera to a 2 second self-timer without going through the menu. I use the 2 second timer a lot for shooting on a tripod at night, so I didn't change the Fn button. On the D3100, the self timer was on a switch on the top; not sure why they removed that. Overall the controls are somewhat cumbersome in the dark without looking at the camera. I am getting used to them, but they could make it easier. Finally, the D5100 does not autofocus on older Nikon lenses like the D7000 does. But I think the picture quality of the D5100 is probably equal to the D7000 because they use the same sensor. Other than the controls/button placement issue, I love this camera and highly recommend it. I think it is certainly worth the 200 dollars more than the D3100 if you are considering between the 2.

bought my refurbished, looks brand new..had 4500 actuation/shutter count on it when I got it..Takes stunning photos in all modes. Simple to use as a point and shoot (get great results)..very nice low light shots with ease and handheld (no tripod needed for what I need it for)..has full manual control with the typical scene modes, aperature/shutter priority and Program mode.The menu system is very intuitive and the screen is crystal clear.I am very pleased with this camera, nice size for a dslr, not too big but large enough to hold comfortably.I see the handful of 1 star reviews....some seem to be canon fanboys and others just got a lemon, which will happen with ANY brand.

I did not buy this camera for myself but had it shipped to someone else. They are pleased with the camera but have not had it long enough to make a good review of it.

Taking fotos with this one is amazingly easy.Focus management, light exposure and handling is superb.Manual options are easy to set up.
