I've had this camera for several months and have never been impressed with its image clarity, preferring my old D70 which takes marvelous images despite its lack of those extra megapixels. However, the camera was okay in the right situations, so I let my son use it for a dream vacation he had arranged out west. Two days after the vacation started, the camera failed utterly: every picture turned out black, although the viewfinder looked great and the focus seemed to be working. I attempted some phone troubleshooting and it looks like the shutter was working fine, but the image sensor was completely blown. This camera was securely packed, not jostled, not mistreated at all - it's just a failure. While troubleshooting I searched the Internet and found that this happens a LOT. Either the shutter or the image sensor fails and the only option is to send the camera in for repairs that last for weeks: not really an option when you're camping across the country. Nikon states that they are "not responsible for lost photo ops" but they really should be responsible for product quality, and they should replace every defective unit by overnight mail if need be. I will be getting this unit fixed at their expense and then maybe foist it upon an unsuspecting charity before running out to buy another brand. Nikon has lost a customer with this piece of junk.

this camera takes nice pictures as you would expect from a nikon.all of the "features" and "modes" are mostly gimmicks and I end up using it in M or manual mode most of the time anyway.the moveable screen is cool but often unnecessary.it actually feels more plastic and less professional than my d40 though it has a superior sensor, faster continuous shooting, wider range of iso, etc.This camera is pretty easy to use if you have ever used a nikon before.the video mode is mostly just for fun as the aperture is selectable but not the exposure or iso setting. typically with a true video camera the frame rate controls the exposure and you can only actually change the iso and the aperture. this camera automatically compensates the exposure to give you an average brightness on the screen. wtf? you cannot shoot artful dark scenes because the camera automatically adjusts the exposure or iso for you even when you try to set a desired aperture for a given light condition. this "feature" actually just hampers any creativity beyond pet or child videos. this feature also ends up giving your vids a lot of grain in lower light. even with a fast lens. 1080p with grain is not very good looking. might as well not be hd.the microphone also sucks. you could get a better one and plug it in, but the on-board audio controls are extremely basic. better to just record audio to some other device.in summary, don't use any of the built in modes or scene setting, don't use the video, and overall you can take great images with the usual manual settings and your existing set of nikkor lenses for which this camera was designed.

I bought this camera for my brother. He loves it. I don't know anything about these cameras, but my brother has taken so many great pictures and video with this one. He mentioned something about the sound when he uses the camera for video not being the best, but other than that he is very happy with the quality of this item.

I have to admit I am a beginner at photography. I did a lot of research and decided to go with the d5100. The quality of the pics are amazing. I do only auto mode but soon I will learn about the advanced settings.A tip:Make sure to get a SD card as otherwise you won't be able to save pics. Good thing I got one at time of ordering.

Cnet gave the best overall review of the product. It does feel plasticy, however the photos that i have taken on the first day are amazing. The camera is super user friendly for those who arent DSLR savy, but the advanced modes make for more creative photos

If you just want to shoot and not fuss around all day with your settings, this is a great camera. I'm used to a larger, heavier camera, so this one seems very light and about a finger's width too small; I was able to remedy that with a battery grip. Be aware that if your lenses aren't AF-S type, they will work with this camera but you will be limited to manual focus.

I've been shooting with my D80 for the last 4 years now and have been very happy with it, but was bothered by the high ISO quality and the lack of video. Read a lot of the reviews on Amazon and agree w/ most of them. Just wanted to toss out my experience with my Sigma 18-250 HSM lens that I paired up with this camera, since there doesn't seem to be any of those experiences on the internet right now. Overall, I think that the lens combination really seems to be working well. The lens of big and heavy, disproportionally more than the camera which is lighter than the D80 that I had. I am purchasing the battery grip to give it a little more balance, just like I did with my D80. Shooting-wise, it does great. Love the clean pics up to ISO 3200, unheard of on my D80. Using the Liveview is a little but more annoying. It seems to struggle to autofocus when the lens is zoomed out. I read that it needs a fast aperture to be able to do live view, and the Sigma for all of its benefits is really slow. So, consider that if you're planning doing a lot of liveview, which I don't. Love the articulating screen. Don't really miss the second screen on the top of the camera. It's not too annoying to just hit the "info" button if I want to know more data. Also, the live view was really helpful for using a manual focus f/1.4 85 mm lens that I had. I couldn't focus on anything accurately enough through the viewfinder.Anyways, just wanted to toss my data out there. Love this camera.

I wanted to get a DSLR camera to take pictures in a low-light setting. Torn between the Canon Rebel T3i and the Nikon D5100, I finally made the decision to purchase the Nikon D5100. Here is why:Toptenreviews.com ranked Canon Rebel T3i number one 9.88 and the Nikon D5100 number two with 9.63. So, with a .25 difference, the two cameras a certainly excellent options for DSLR, especially for the price range.I consider myself a hobbyist photographer owning a Nikon D80 that I have had for years shooting varies subjects: family reunions, anniversaries, portraits, landscapes, animals, sports events, etc. With this in mind, I have always been partial to Nikon's usability. However, I have heard from various friends about how wonderful the Canon Rebel is so I welcomed the opportunity to test it out myself. Indeed, they did not steer me wrong, the Canon Rebel T3i is wonderful, but it is not the option I decided to take for low-light photograph.I am taking pictures in low-light settings, where Nikon's flash consistency excels. Although the T3i shoots 3.7 frames per second and the Nikon shoots 4 frames per second, the difference is not very noticeable. However, the D5100 has distortion control (T3i does not) and a longer battery life.I am also impressed with Nikon's overall generic settings--auto,portrait, etc. I wanted a camera that would be user friendly in case someone else wanted to try using the camera, etc.

The D5100 is a camera that any moderately proficient shooter would enjoy - I know I do. I've been shooting for close to 40 years, and this is an outstanding camera; plenty of effects, settings and options to keep you learning the camera for weeks. But do yourself a favor and purchase the body only. The 18-55mm kit lens is ok if you want ok images. If you want clear, sharp and vivid images, opt to spend a little extra money on quality glass (lens). If I was reviewing only the camera, it would get 5 stars. As it is, the 18-55mm lens is adequate... not very good nor excellent.

This is my first DLSR and am a beginner interms of DLSR but not photography. I already own a Nikon p500 super zoom camera that has all Manual options, but this is many folds better one.trying to use Aperture, shutter and macro options, but my portrait is really awesome. Single point focus is what always drives me crazy.Yet to explore many options. I am very happy till now.

This camera deserves a mention, you are thoroughly impressed by the quality of the pictures when you take photos, when I received my package contained everything and check all accessories, the quality of materials is very good, the screen has high brightness and lens it brings is more than enough to get decent photographs, we must stress that comes with a small flash incomporado on top.

love it!!! the color quality is better than the cannon I just upgraded from. the website link that comes with step by step how to do everything and once you see it and do it with the instructions its pretty easy to work.....mine also came with a 55mm lens which I also love it. can switch the lens from manual or auto focus. also have a cheat sheet you can but to attch to your camera case

You can spend a lot of money on cameras, this one is worth the money. Many of my friends swear by the Cannon 5D and beyond - they can be snobby - I can't afford that. When I started researching I looked at five different cameras and fell on this one for features and cost. I highly recommend buying this camera and then buying a Tamron AF 18-200 lens (workhorse multipurpose) or going for the lens you want. I use mine for video, in fact, my desire to buy this one had to do with the mic input on the side panel. I did buy a 28 mm prime lens, so if I ever upgrade cameras, I can still use the lens. I use this camera constantly and get great video - the average person cannot tell the difference in quality.

This camera is wonderful. It is perfect for portraiture, events, documentary photographing, It is really easy to use if you know anything about DSLRs, I swapped out my D3000 for this D5100 and the transition has been very smooth. It has a lot more options - one that I'm loving is the remote shutter. I haven't used video much since I got it (about a week ago), but I expect to have a lot of fun with that option as well. No complaints so far!

This was my first time shopping around for a nice entry level DSLR camera. I have had a 7 year old point and shoot camera. I was deciding to go with the D3200 but a photography hobbyist friend mentioned and recommended me this camera over the D3200. The price was a 100 bucks less but was only for the body. I purchased a Sigma 18-200 lens and love my new camera. Cant go wrong.

Not recommended for video enthusiasts looking to get that film look. I am keeping mine, but only after months of practice and because I'd rather spend money on all the other gear, not just the camera. Takes amazing shots with a fast lens. 50mm 1.4 highly recommended (although keep in mind if will act like a 75mm on this DX format camera).

This Was The Perfect Camera! The Same As The Nikon 3200(Same Price), But The 3200 Has 24 Mega Pixels And The 5100 Has a Flip Out Screen For Better viewing. The One Thing I've Realized I Want Now But Didn't Get With The 5100 Was 'Wifi' capability. The 3200 Does Come With This And The New 5200 Does as Well. This Camera Does All You Need For The Beginner And The Shutter speed And ISO Range Is Great For The Pro. a Lot Of Features And a Great Starting Lens. Of Course Your Next Purchase Will Be a200mm/300mm Zoom lens But For The Beginner That Can Wait While You hone Your Skills a Bit.

Excellent in low light, and in every setting. I find new settings every day. This was my first DSLR and I was slightly skeptic about any camera I wanted and I picked the right one. From the lens selections to the image quality, it's nearly perfect.I only wish the waterproof casing was less expensive and it took faster continuous shots. I've been converted from Canon Powershots to Nikon. :3

bought my refurbished, looks brand new..had 4500 actuation/shutter count on it when I got it..Takes stunning photos in all modes. Simple to use as a point and shoot (get great results)..very nice low light shots with ease and handheld (no tripod needed for what I need it for)..has full manual control with the typical scene modes, aperature/shutter priority and Program mode.The menu system is very intuitive and the screen is crystal clear.I am very pleased with this camera, nice size for a dslr, not too big but large enough to hold comfortably.I see the handful of 1 star reviews....some seem to be canon fanboys and others just got a lemon, which will happen with ANY brand.

Very versatile lens with exceptional ease of use. The vibration reduction helps minimize the blurring that sometimes comes with telephoto lenses. The only drawback is the f 4.5 maximum aperture (I couldn't afford the much more expensive lens). But for the price it is a great lens

I would buy this camera in a heartbeat again if I needed too.I bought this camera about 10 months ago and I still love it. I am very careful with it and shoot twice a month with it sometimes more if people are visiting. The pictures are great. This has a little more features than your basic entry level dslr I've learned. I am still learning this camera. It would probably take me a couple of photography classes to learn everything on this camera.If you are looking for a basic entry DSLR with a little more "umph" to it, this is your camera. It takes very clear beautiful photos even with the entry level lens they send with it.

I upgraded from the Nikon D-40 partly because I just thought it was time. 11 focusing points on this camera makes a huge difference for me. I took some great photos with the D-40 and still own it with some reluctance. Re-sell value is terrible and its to great a camera to simply give away for a measly couple of hundred bucks considering I paid almost then what I paid for this now. So with that comparison alone it makes this camera a buy. Thought about the 3100 but remembered my experience with reasons for upgrading so why not spend a few more dollars now. I couldn't afford the next level up so this is it. Honestly, I still have a ton to learn and so far this camera is superb. The thing that really has me convinced is that when I used a trial edition of adobe Lightroom 4 the actual shot photo (to me) looks better than what they are trying to change it to. Granted I still have a lot to learn but just going by what I see when I compare the photos so not sure about software too much. But my naked eye tells me there are times when there is no reason to change the tone or white balance as this camera photo looks better than the auto settings in Lightroom on most, not all, occasions. Have yet to try the video side and actually didn't buy it for the video and would have personally preferred it being a camera only with more features. But maybe I will say to myself why not mix in some video which I failed to do and was highly upset after shooting a waterfall. A 2 mintue video snip would have fit perfectly embedded within a slide show. But I was not hiking back just for video. I say buy.

I have been using a Lumix with a Leica lens for a few years. When I got this, I can't believe the difference! It has a lot of manual features that I"ll use later after I become more accustomed to this camera. For now, I have been using the auto mode and love the results!

I am in love with this camera!!! I used a Nikon D60 for 5 years. It was wonderful. I knew it inside and out. I thought I had mastered everything I needed to master in the photography world. Then my shutter motor died. I was devastated. I bought this model after doing some research and have not been sorry. The only thing I don't like is it does go through the battery rather quickly ( when shooting long exposures) I will buy an extra battery and be hap hap happy!

Bought this at a great price. Nikon was clearing inventory in an advance of the D5200. It has a lot of features I don't expect to use but that's what you have to accept to get the ones one wants. I was deciding between this and the D3200. The key features this had but were lacking on the D3200 were AEB and the movasble LCD screen which lets me avoid "belly photography" in some circumstances. It is an upgrade to my D60. Image quality nod definately better -- it's not just the pixel count -- specifcly lower noise (it doesn't change much from ISO100 levels ontill you approad ISO400), and EV range is about 2 stops greater.

I intend to use this for video interviews and general photography. My only complaint is short battery life for video and no AC plug in. Also no headphone jack for monitoring audio. Otherwise a very good camera.

First off, I don't know much about photography other than what I learned from a high school photo class quite a few years back. So take this review with a grain of salt.That being said, the quality of my pictures immediately improved when I started using my D5100. I'm still learning about the functions, but am getting the hang of it slowly. One thing is for sure, my photos look really good. I do have a couple of notes for people:Camera does not come with a memory card. You'll need to buy one separately before you can take any pictures. You'll also need to charge the battery, which is included w/charger.Camera is way too big for use with a small Gorilla Pod. I had one I used for my old point and shoot camera. I was hoping it would be strong enough for both, but it wasn't even close.Auto-focus is ok, but can be a pain in the ass. I've been using the manual focus a lot.Indoor flash is pretty sucky. Luckily the camera is awesome and doesn't really need it as long as there is some light around.Can't wait to see what else this thing can do. I'm really impressed with the pictures so far.
