So I purchased the body only last Thursday. I may have taken two pictures and I saw 4 consistent spots on f11 and higher. I used a different lens and took multiple pictures over and over again and the same spots occurred. Nikon's Clean image sensor function couldn't get it off whatever that was. It did take good pictures below f11 with minor visibility of those spots but a brand new camera shouldn't have that problem. It could have been a defective or returned item as the components seemed to be packed in a rush. I also noticed some imprint on camera's body and I know for sure that Nikon doesn't slap an LCD protector on the screen(that confirmed my suspicion).Quality defects - memory card grinds upon inserting and removing; battery refuses to come out.Not happy

My husband bought this for me as a Christmas present along with a 40mm macro lens. Both perform very well, particularly in low light where the sensor in this camera excels. Also, like the D40 it is replacing, it has a relatively small size for an SLR. Highly recommended.

I'm not a professional photographer, but i travel a lot. this camera is great for anyone that wants to take a great picture and a variety of pictures without having to spend time editing afterwards. it's user friendly, well built and doesn't have the cheap feeling of some other cameras. i'd highly recommend this for the avid traveler.

This is just a first impression review because, I've only had the camera for a couple days. So far, I am enjoying my D5100 a lot. I am finding a lot of tutorials on YouTube.com that are helping me learn the basics. I already know that I will be investing money into new lenses, probably a Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras first and then a Rokinon FE8M-C 8mm F3.5 Fisheye Lens for Canon - Black for filming my friends' skateboarding. I am having trouble finding a video editing software I feel comfortable using. I'm not sure whether to go with Adobe Premiere, Sony Vegas, or what! Also, I've heard editing HD video can be hard on your computer (vista+4GB RAM=meh).SO yeah, I've got a long confusing road ahead of me.

I am not a camera expert but this camera takes great photos. It is easy to use and captures wonderful photos. After years of using simple, cheap point and shoot cameras I invested in this one and couldn't be happier. We have not had professional photos done since I bought this, so in the long run it will save me money and time not going to a photo studio.

The company was fantastic - delivery was speedy and even included extras.The camera itself however...within 3 months the camera's auto focus no longer worked, a problem which apparently occurs often and should not, given the its price.

After a very careful use of the Nikon D5100, is it sad to see that the shutter mechanism is broken after three months; when the camera is most needed. On this particular model many D5100 customers are having the same issues with shutter mechanisms. Nikon should definitely re-evaluate their design/manufacturing methods. I have been a loyal Nikon customer for the last 35 years, still own many Nikon cameras and lenses. But loyalty is quite perishable when design(or manufacturing)-flaw-fix-costs are stuck back onto the customer. Nikon should think about lifelong warranty including the mechanical parts inside the camera unless there is evidence that the camera is dropped, tempered with etc. Since the shutter issue it is not covered under warranty, Nikon is asking over $150 to fix the shutter mechanism.

My fiancé and I wanted this camera for our upcoming honeymoon trip to Iceland. We've yet to go to as our wedding is still approaching, but we decided to get this camera early to learn the basics.We're glad we got it early, and have already figured out how to use the basic scene modes. We've played with the HDR functionality, and taken a few videos.There is nothing bad that I can yet say about this camera. After loads of online research and a few in-store visits to retailers, we knew this was the ideal camera for the price.The photos to my eye are phenomenal, and for our purpose this is all that we could have asked for.The learning curve is whatever you make it with this camera. We initially learned the basics in no time at all. We're now experimenting with other settings that we have to dig through the camera menu for. Everything on the menu makes sense and it is easy to navigate.Very fun, light, full-featured, compact camera! Thanks Nikon!!!

Folks,You can leave this on the AUTO setting, and the pictures look great. I either leave it on this setting or put it on the P setting, and leave the settings at: White Balance: Auto > OK > A2; Set Picture Control: SD > OK > Sharpening: 7, Saturation: +1; Active D-Lighting: Extra High. Leave everything else as default/AUTO. These settings seem to beat the AUTO settings, especially when taking lower light/indoor photos. This could simply be a personal preference, though. Sometimes also putting on HDR (settings: default), on top of what I've set above also helps when you notice very high light-dark (light contrast) shots in front of you.The only issue I see is that this camera tends to massively increase the ISO (1500-3000+) in slightly lower lighting conditions, when it is not needing to do so. Put it on P (or M, A, S),and the camera does not reach for those crazy-high ISO settings; you can bound the ISO Auto setting's lowest & highest numbers.Also, I have seen no/extremely little noise, with photos, even when I magnify them, when the ISO is upwards of 800-1000 levels; you get above these levels, and you begin to see increasing levels of noise, but only if you crop/magnify the picture 150%+.The only complaints I have are that it eats through the battery charge, even when not in live mode, and, if you want (and should) buy a secondary battery, they are very expensive!Great camera!MarcP.S. The camera is pretty good. There is no limit to learning to do new things with this camera. My only complaint is that the NIKKOR lenses are too expensive. Pretty simple to use and a good beginner camera.

Still learning the camera but photos are fantastic and video in auto shooting mode. With a DSLR beyond a basic camera that fuflills your shooting profile, it is ALL about the lenses. I got a package with this that had a DVD training set which I highly recommend.

I had to get a new camera because my D60 auto feature mysteriously stopped working. This replacement is a nice upgrade. The additions of having a screen and the video feature have both come in handy. It is lighter than the D60 and the lens can be used on the 5100 body so I only needed to replace the body.

The first week I had the camera I had the issue of "black screen" then after fixing this issue a few weeks after the shutter gets stuck and when I google this problem I come to find that this is an ONGOING ISSUE. This item should be recalled and money refunded. Not a dependable camera.

I bought this camera to replace my D80 so I could shoot video as well as stills. I use to carry a ultra compact camera or my DV camcorder to shoot video and would have to switch cameras. The camera is great for stills. The big problem with DSLRs is the auto focus during video. The D5100 focuses quickly, but unfortunately hunts for its subject in a pattern of 4 adjustments. It focuses slight in front of subject, then behind, then in front, and finally on the subject. This creates a distracting "in and out" of focus pattern that I felt was unacceptable. The auto focus function is also noisy and easily picked up on the build in mic. An external mic would be needed for decent sound capture if using auto focus. The D5100 can focus in single shot mode. Meaning you can depress the shutter button to refocus when needed. Ultimately, what I discovered is that D5100 is not appropriate for semi-serious video using auto focus. It is usable for casual video capture if you pre-focus and use manual focus to shoot videos.

Love, love love it! Def need 32GB SD card to do video and pics. Seems to be better when you use the viewfinder instead of the screen for still pics. I use it all the time! I was between this one and the D7000 and the differences weren't worth the price difference.

I have had a little bit of time to use this camera now and I absolutely love it. I upgraded from the d3000 and its definitely worth the upgrade. I haven't had a chance to delve into the video modes yet however I am loving the features it offers. The flip out screen is fantastic and I like how it flips out the side so it's not in the way.The picture quality is exceptional, even though I have only had it a little while I have only scratched the surface as far as what this camera can do.

I progressed through a series of point and shoot cameras starting back in 2003 and was happy with their results. Until, that is, I went to a photography workshop directed to DSLR users where I translated the language of my film camera days to the language of modern image technology. During the workshop I made a list of features that I wanted and started looking, finally selecting the Nikon D5100 after a couple of weeks learning what the market offered. The Nikon D5100 was a good choice.The Nikon D5100 takes some study and the features require practice to master. For an old man (60), I am a hi-tech guy capable of learning fast and understanding technical manuals. It has taken time and effort to get the images I want, primarily landscapes, buildings, locomotives, and oil well pumpjacks. I am still not satisfied because I know this camera can deliver much more than my present skill level demands. However, I know it has the capabilities to meet my needs as an amateur as my skills expand.

I have had this camera since last October and it produces great photos indoors, outdoors and in low light, provided you upgrade lens beyond the kit. It is lightweight and reasonably easy to carry around. If you invest in better lenses, you will notice the weight of those more than the camera itself. Controls are not difficult get at and if you are really new at this, auto mode works well under most circumstances and still gives great photos.If you use this to make videos, I would suggest getting an external microphone to avoid recording lens noise from autofocusing. Even if you are manually focusing video, you can get some noise from turning the dial on your lens. Other than that, there isn't much to complain about with this camera. There is a reason why it has been #1 in sales on Amazon for a while now.
