I bought this camera mainly because I wanted a camera that was significantly better than my Casio Exilim. Although this option was not advertised, I have enjoyed the option to have auto OR manual focus. I'm definitely not a pro at photography, so I don't know how this camera would measure up to professional standards, but for me, it's been wonderful! It also has a lot of cool built-in filters and options that help make a good photo a great one. Lastly, it's very easy to attach/detach lenses. I would highly recommend this camera to anyone.

I love this camera. It has dealt with a LOT of shooting from me and I have no complains or downtime. A very faithful camera it is. The lens that comes with it is alright, I don't use it really unless for general video, but it's a good lens so no newbie should ever be wondering "What lens should I get?" Use the lens it came with! Anyway, the controls are exactly where I want it to be, nothing is hard to reach. There's tons to say, but all in all, a durable camera that I use for work, freelance work (real estate), fun, etc etc.

This is my first "real"camera. What a great value for the $!!!! After spending about 30mins with a friend who is really into it I was able to take some awesome photos at my son's hockey game. It takes a bit to learn, I still am, but well worth it. Great value.

I got this one for my birthday. Have been using it for close to a year. No problems at all. The user manual, and the user DVD is very informative. This camera is very good for the money I paid for it. It may not be as good as a D7000 but then, you don't pay as much as you would for a D7000. So considering what I spent on this camera, I feel this one's a great deal. Regarding the features, the few couple of months I found it really hard to understand and transitions between various modes. I read the manual fully, listened to the DVD as well, kept trying and now finally I can say I have a good understanding of the various features the camera offers. So you need to be patient and spend some time to really understand what wonders this camera can do. To sum up, its a Thumbs UP to D5100.

The camera at this price ($469) is a steal. I would advice anyone to get the body only and purchase the Nikkor 35mm 1.8G prime lens. I am a beginner and i discovered my passion for photography with is camera.

Great camera great price!! Have only had the camera 2 months but I can't find anything I do not like. Love how it will take 3 pics a sec repeatedly. The quality of the pics is stunning. Camera is very light weight but feels well built. The lens is where all the weight is.

This camera has done everything I've needed it to do and more. Very sturdy, very durable, very practical to carry and transport. Photos are clear, with plenty of features for everyone - from the beginning photographer to the experienced artist. Excellent value for the price, and you've got to love Nikon's quality and reliability. The battery lasts a considerable amount of time, but it's always good to have a spare - especially if you love to snap as many pictures as I do.

Hi, I have waited a long long time to jump from my Canon PowerShot A560 7.1MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Zoom to my first DSLR, like every budget oriented consumer out there, I did a lot of research, I could have gone for the Nikon D3200 24.2 MP CMOS Digital SLR with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AF-S DX VR NIKKOR Zoom Lens (Black), but didn't like the fixed display, then there was the new Nikon D5200 24.1 MP CMOS Digital SLR Camera Body Only (Black), but you had to pay a premium for basically the same camera with bumped megapixels and the D7000's autofocus system. I got my D5100 refurbished for $399, I think that's a great deal for such a great camera. I skipped the kit lens and went for Nikon 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras and I highly recommend this combination, It allowed me to take great shots of my kids indoors without a flash, outdoor shots have great bokeh as well.

This is my first DSLR camera. I debated between Nikon D5100 and Canon T3i for a long time, and settled on Nikon because of the way it fits in my hand. It's been a great camera that allows me to do everything I want to try out as a beginner, and I imagine I'll be happy using this for a few years. In addition to the lenses that came with this kit (18-55mm and 55-200mm), I purchased Nikkor AF-S 50mm f/1.8G, and I've been happy with the results. With these lenses, I've been able to take excellent (well, in my biased opinion) pictures of pets, people, and close-up of flowers. I can't say anything about landscapes yet, since I haven't had a chance to take it out for a hike yet, but I don't doubt it'll work as great. Only thing with this kit is that the bag is barely big enough to hold the three lenses plus the camera, but I want to buy a waterproof backpack anyway, so that's okay.

The lens cannot shoot with automatic focus. I have to adjust the focus with every angle and distance change manually. This makes macro either really difficult or not possible at all. Other than that, good shape.

This is a great camera. The auto mode makes anyone look like a professional photographer. Switch to manual mode to get some great shots and use your creativity. Get a few lenses and you will be very happy with this purchase.

I bought this camera for my sister and it's a great camera. We are both beginners but I think it matters if you know your way around electronics. It's fairly easy for those who know their way. It takes stunning pictures, very professional looking pictures. It has a few scene modes which are great. The zoom goings up to 55 mm, and is okay but not that great. The pictures still come out amazing at the highest zoom. I'd advise anyone who buys this camera to buy a good carrying bag and to purchase a Class 10 memory card. I tried recording video with an SD card from another camera but it cut off after a few seconds.

Nikon d5100 is perfect both for who want to start photography as me or for a pro. It is very reliable and easy to use. The cost is not that high and, God, the pictures are great ! I have done some shots and I am very proud of myself and of the camera ! Great pictures. Now, i am a Nikon fan and i don't really get those people who say canon are better in video; I did some videos with this camera and i found them great. Very good quality!! The only thing i complain about is the microphone which is not the greatest, and also the sound of the autofocus that covers everything. But, if i ever wanted to do professional video, i would buy an external mic and everything would be fine !!

FIrst - buy a good SD card. I'm irritated because I spent $100 more on a new Nikon over a refurb because of reports of "black photos." I had them too -- until I got a better SD card.Second - the only bad thing I've discovered thus far is recording video. The AutoFocus motor is way too noticeable.Third - buy this camera. I have some camera snob friends who would have rather me spend $4,000 for a camera. Sorry, wasn't going to be making my living w/ this camera. For what I've seen, it's fantastic for a consumer who wants quality without the cost. I don't think it can be beat.Fourth - buy a refurb from someone who is too stupid to buy a fast SD card.

Purchased back in June of 2011 to replace a Nikon 8800 that wouldn't read charged batteries any longer. Took it to Italy a month later. Been all over the US. Takes great pictures. Perfect camera for someone (like me) just getting into manual modes. Have since bought 2 more lenses for it (a 55-200mm and a 55mm)Has a good feel in my hands without being excessively heavy. Love the Vari-angle LCD Monitor - great feature for over head shots or ground level pics.

I'm a long time (over 8 years) Nikon DSLR user, primarily using pro and semi-pro bodies. My main body now is the D3s. So, when I bought the d5100, I was ready to be disappointed.Well, I've had the camera for a couple of months now and I must say that the little camera is a keeper. The images that it can produce are about as good as one could ask for, assuming that the photographer does his part. I'm not a big fan of having to use the menu on so many oft-used parameters, but Nikon fixed much of that with being able to see and change all of that stuff on the LCD. Yes, I still prefer the dedicated screens and buttons that one finds on the pro level bodies, but that's part of why they cost so much.For general photography on a budget, I just don't see how one could need more than what the d5100 offers. I am delighted with this little camera, especially due to the excellent images, and Live View with the swivel screen is simply terrific for use on most any difficult subject.The d7000 is another excellent camera that I own and have used this year, but I must give the d5100 my Best Bang for the Buck award. IMO, you can't hardly go wrong with this camera as a budget camera to carry around all of the time.

This is a great camera for general photography. It is simple to use, takes really good pictures, and is particularly good in low-light situations where using a flash is not possible. One of the menu selections on the main menu dial allows turning off the flash and keeping all of the other features and settings intact, and this is very useful in taking pictures where there is reasonable light, but use of a flash is inappropriate.I bought the body only, so I cannot address the supplied kit lenses. I am using the kit lens from my old Nikon D70 (18-70mm)and a Nikon AF-S Nikkor 55-300mm with the body. Both give very sharp images.The camera offers a variety of shooting options, though for most uses the auto-focus, auto-iris is quite adequate, and is the one I generally use. For the more ambitious photographer it will take either raw or .jpeg images, and it allows selecting image quality. It stores images on a SD card, and with a large card one can save hundreds of pictures before downloading. The battery also holds up for extended shooting.As a camera, it is easily a five star. The reason I lowered the rating is because the grip is a bit small, and the shutter release button is under a projection that makes holding the camera for any period of time uncomfortable for a person with large hands. This camera is a replacement for a Nikon D70, which had a larger hand grip and was more comfortable to hold. This design issue is my only complaint about this very nice camera, and would not be an issue for someone with smaller hands. I have a video camera, so do not use this for videos, though that is one of the features it offers. Overall, I highly recommend this camera.

....i am just a person who loves to take photos....and when i decided to upgrade finally to a dslr camera from a simple shooter i didnt hesitate to purchase a nikon camera....after much research, i found that the d5100 is just perfect for me and my skill level of photographing....after owning this over a year i am still discovering all of the amazing functions it can do....of course the photos look amazing and it makes me happy!....i have already got 2 lenses for it with a recent purchase of a 18-300mm lens....now my camera is complete and totally awesome....Amazon as always does a great job!

I bought this product that said used like new, but it's actually refurbished, which is quite nice but cause I know for a fact that big companies like nikon have very good refurbished items, it actually looks exactly like the brand new item but costs 150 bucks less, so I definitely recommend it, it takes awesome pictures and very easy to use.

This camera is by far the best camera I've ever owned. Granted it is my first DSLR but, boy does this camera deliver. So many features, you never stop learning. I am a photographer by hobby not profession. Fun features and excellent quality. I would definitely recommend this camera to anyone willing to learn how to use it. If you don't have patience and give up easily then this camera is probably not for you. If you are willing to learn the possibilities are endless!

I don't know a damn thing about photography but now I'm "kick-ass" with a camera!I'm still learning how to use the more complex features but I would have bought this a long time ago if I had any clue about how freaking awesome it is. I've captured hawks in-flight, breathtaking scenery and incredible up close details.The one challenge I have is auto focusing the spit second before taking an action shot, and maintaining the focus during multi frame per second pictures. You know? When I see the shot gotta take it but no time to focus gott shooot when the moment is hot!

wanted to upgrade from my iPhone and point-and-shoots to give me more creative imaging. this bundle serves me well. the quality of the images is amazing. one is flexible to just go automatic for times when one's in a rush to fire off a photo, but if you're trying to get creative and into real thoughtful "photography" skills the D5100 provides an excellent set of tools.

I ordered this camera (which was originally across the country), and it arrived in the amazing time-span of 2 days. The camera is spectacular, and so was the deal that it came with. A $700 value; the Nikon D5100 came with a cleansing kit, two sufficient memory cards, an 18-55mm VR lens, and a strap etc. For an outstanding price of $250, this was a "deal steal". Very pleased overall.

I wanted to replace my D40, and after looking at the 5200,7000 & the 7100 as well, decided on going the economical route. I'm thrilled with the performance of the camera to date (500+ photos). A nice upgrade from the 40 which I loved. I don't see for my use what more I'd have gotten for a lot more cost with the upgraded models.

I had a traditional (film) SLR thru college right up until last year. I'm not a brilliant photographer, but I took some amazing photos with it. This Nikon is sure to up my game. It's amazingly easy to use, lightweight and it looks cool. I added a 35 mm lens and a 300 mm zoom to my kit shortly after purchasing this bad boy and, although I haven't had much to shoot yet (it's a drab, dreary winter here), I'm looking forward to really testing its chop. But, so far, I have no complaints. The controls are intuitive and easy to use. Delivery was bang on schedule and no defects I've detected. Highly recommended for those just starting out in DSLR photography but don't want "beginner" gear. I imagine I'll eventually upgrade, but I don't envision outgrowing this camera any time soon.

I had the pleasure of trying the Nikkor 105 mm f2 lens out for one day before returning it.It is a beautiful metal made in Japan product. The pictures had beautiful color and luminous quality.Warning: it is not for use in D5100 camera. This is not an AF-S lens! The D5100 only takes AF-S lenses!I was misled by the manufacturer spec which says the lens can be used in DX format cameras. Also, the B&H website said the lens is not to be used in D40 and D60 cameras but there was no mention of the D5100 camera.However I was sad to learn that this lens's autofocus feature does not work in the D5100 camera. The whole point for me was the autofocus feature. I was devastated to learn that I could only use AF-S lenses (motor inside the lens) with the D5100. When I was shopping for a camera, it did not occur to me how I would be limited in lens selection.I got the 105 mm f 2.8 AF-S lens instead. It is OK but it sure feels plasticky after the f 2. This one is made in China.I feel like I lost my first love.Otherwise, this is a great, easy to use camera.

This camera consistently puts out great pictures as long as your using the right settings, and the right glass, but that goes without saying. The buffer is amazing for continuous shooting if your using a fast SD card. Yes, you'll have to "menu-dig" for items that are otherwise one button away on other brands/models. But I'll take a few extra button pushes for a quality camera. If you outgrow this one in a hurry, then next camera in Nikon's lineup will fix that issue. I chose this over the Canon T3i based on ergonomics and what I consider to be superior low light performance and battery life. If your a hardcore video enthusiast, the Canon wins in the video department - but the Nikon wins in the stills department, in my honest opinion. A talented photographer will do fine with either camera since they are so evenly matched. I'm running this camera with the 35mm prime for indoor/low light, 50mm prime for outdoor/low light, 18-55mm kit for all around day shooting, and the 55-200mm for a budget zoom. Next on my list is a macro lens. There seems to be some lemons out there based on the reviews on here and at Costco for the camera body, but mine is working fine as of this writing. Oh, and the Nikon's SWM focus motor is amazingly quieter than the Canon's kit setup. This was also why I jumped to the Nikon camp from my old Pentax setup. Get this camera and go out and shoot some pictures. You won't be disappointed.
