For under 50 bucks these are simply fantastic sounding speakers. The highs and mids are crystal clear, and even the bass that comes out of these tiny things will astound you. I've had them for four months, and they seem to have gotten better after an initial break-in period. Many of the reviewers are right about the on/off volume knob, it's definitely in need of a new design, but the sound is so impressive it won't bother you that much. The other chief complaint I've been reading about here, the power saving turnoff feature, is not worth getting bothered about either. I have my Duets hooked up to my MP3 player in my bedroom, and the delay on initial startup is barely noticeable. Buy these speakers, trust me, you will be blown away. As a long-time JBL fan, I've owned many of their products, and they have come up with another winner here.

I have always been a fan of JBL. Once again, they did not disappoint me. This is my second pair of JBL's Duet speakers. I purchased a pair a couple of years ago for my Dell PC and thought they had a great sound for computer speakers without the need for a subwoofer. I am using this new pair with a new Toshiba laptop and the sound is "sweet."

Bought these used and besides not having the original packaging they look like new.These are plug and play,setup is extremely fast and easy.And the sound that comes out of these tiny speakers is very sweet.I am very pleased and happy that I purchased these speakers! I've read negative reviews about there built in power saving feature where they go into standby mode when no sound is detected for 2 minutes.But I have not had any problem with this as they turn on immediately as soon as they detect sound.Great price.great speakers!

These speakers are great for many things. I chose to have them at my office. They have amazing clarity and for their size an amazing amount of bass. I don;t know where people are getting that these have no bass. Are they better than my 7.2 setup at home? NO, but then I never expected them to be. I was a little nervous buying them, but I heard friend's JBL ipod dock. It was an older one and small, very small. I was blown away by the sound that little ipod dock could produce so i took a chance on these. Now I am heavily considering getting a second pair for use at home. They do not take up a lot of room on your desk because most of the speaker is in the air so they save you some desk real estate. I got mine used and paid $50 for them but I would not hesitate on the $99 from amazon. As I said earlier I may buy another pair for my home office. I would pay the $99, again these are a great set of speakers. My current home office speakers even have a sub so they can achieve some bass but it is sloppy and boomy and the detail is just not there in my music; compared to the tight, clear, crisp, warm, and accurate sound these produce.Update: As I had feared, once these are taken out of the office setting performance has suffered. They do not perform well at mid to higher volumes. Since I had received these speakers I had noticed a crackling noise coming from one of the speakers. The speaker that does NOT have the volume control would have sloppy bass reproduction. The other performed admirably. I am not sure if this is because of the seller or manufacture's defect. Could be why I was able to pick these up for $50. So for that price not gonna be too upset.

just received= hook up took less than a minute on my mac book pro- make sure output on your computer is set to proper range, they work better than my bose that cost 10 times as much, great product, no interference problems, they are the best

It must be an unqualified manufactuer like other small electronics sold on Amazon. The first time works, and then didn't use it for a long time, four months or so. The second time we did use it again, the sound suddenly disapeared in the middle of the movie, I turned it off and on again, the sound resumed with no problem through the rest of the movie. The third and fourth time, this happened more and more frequently, now I'm sitting in front of my computer watching a movie, the sound can only last two or three minutes. And I cannot return it now. It's not a cheap item, so save yourself some time and money. Like many other examples, this is definitely something you buy in a store but not Amazon. There is a reason why it doesn't get five stars.

I listen to a couple of radio programs on the internet while I take care of routine housework. I needed some external speakers to amplify the volume in order to hear the broadcasts from the next room. These speakers have lived up to my expectations.

I consider myself to be something of a tree-hugger, so when I saw speakers with an automatic power-saving feature that turns the speakers off when they don't detect an audio signal for a long time, I was in. Unfortunately, it's that feature that makes me want to pitch these out a window. The documentation says that they'll turn off if they don't detect an audio signal for 2 minutes, but mine stop after only a few seconds without sound. This makes watching movies with lots of dramatic pauses an infuriating experience. Once I do turn on music or a video, it can take the speakers 30 seconds or longer to power up. That's about half the duration of many YouTube videos (which I then have to start over).The reason I gave these two stars rather than one is the fact that the sound is pretty good, and they look cool. But they're a little expensive if they're just going to decorate my desk.Honestly, I'm surprised: I thought JBL had one of the best reputations around. I'm not sure if I retained the documentation for these; if I did, they're going back.

Right out of the box they didn't really work - or they worked intermittently. Use case: I leave these speakers plugged in to my laptop when I am sitting at my desk. I use Pandora, Spotify, and Amazon MP3 to play music. Most of the time I get sound out of them for about 2 minutes and then mysteriously there will be no sound - the green "on" button will be lit but no music. After a period of no sound, green light on, the green light will go off and, sometimes, they will magically restart.The JBL website has some troubleshooting tips and that seems to make them work for a while, but then I'll be back to on for two minutes, then off completely.Although I bought these a couple of months ago, I will probably return them unless someone can point me in the direction of how to fix permanently.On the plus side, it's hard to believe that such great sound comes out of such a small package.

I've owned these speakers for 4 months now and let me tell you my experience. The hardware is pretty good. The sounds get quite loud for their size. Also they look pretty nice. However the problem is with the wiring. They really skimped on the wires. I don't move my speakers at all but after a few months, the contact inside the wire started to give way. So I would have to jiggle the wire to reconnect the speakers. Now after couple jiggling sessions, I have the entire wire twisted to get back the sound. So for that aspect, I have to say it is very disappointing as the actual cone of the speakers are good. But without the wires, it's really pretty useless. So overall I regret this purchase. I am looking for new speakers to buy.

These speakers are very affordable and offer great sound. I am not an audiophile, but they work great for listening to music in my office for 8-10 hours a day. They are definitely loud enough to fill a room or two with sound and are light and easily portable. They do not take batteries and must be plugged in an outlet in order to work.

These speakers are disappointing on all counts. They are quiet--even at full volume they are only slightly louder than my computer's internal speakers. They sound terrible--with disproportionately round bass and tinny, metallic-sounding treble. They also regularly turn themselves off as part of a power-saving mode that is nowhere mentioned in the product description, the packaging, or the instructions.I bought these on sale as part of an Amazon lightning deal, and even at thirty dollars I felt these were not a good buy. But they did teach me to better appreciate the muddy sound of my iMac's tiny internal speakers--which, overall, I much prefer to what the JBL Duet produces.

Bought this on the strength of the good review written here but when I got it and set it up the sound was rather disappointing. Its rather weak mid and hardly any low. The complaint that many face about humming is very true there this low humming sound which when you go up close you would hear it. At the price of more than $40 this is a rather poor choice as there are many better speaker which cost much less. The material is cheap plastic and the look is rather dated. After one week I am trying to sell it off cheap and look elsewhere for a better speaker.

The sound quality is adequate for this unit, given the price. They have this weird "feature" where if they don't detect any sound they go into a low power mode, much like a printer does. The problem is they don't always recognize sound. I've had a song or video playing for over a minute before the speakers kick in sometimes. Others, if you have the sound a low to moderate listening level, the speaker will go into this low power mode even if while they're in the middle of producing sound. Turning them on and off tends to fix the problem, but this is ridiculous. I've never seen, or heard of, speakers that do this. I wish I hadn't thrown the box out as I would certainly be returning them if I could.

I got these in 2008 and was pleased with the sound quality (with the exception of the slight buzz when the speakers are on but no audio is playing--as some reviewers have also mentioned). Then, gradually, something happened with the bass...instead of hearing the bass, you'd hear a grainy, booming buzz and not much else. This problem got so bad in recent times, that now the speakers are completely unusable. I don't think I would buy them again; they seem fine at first but it takes some time for the flaws to come out.

Given the size & cost of these speakers, I was very impressed.I needed a compact model to watch tv on my computer, listen to internet radio/podcasts, and listen to music off my phone.I was a bit taken aback at how small these were, but once I plugged them in I was surprised at how much quality sound they packed. These speakers have no problem filling even a large room in my home.As others mentioned, the bass is what you can expect from computer speakers - dance/trance music with a lot of beats does not sound that great, but for every other kind of music these work fine. I typically have them turned up only half way, and the sound is great.My only wish is that these speakers had retractable wires, but oh well.

The good.... speakers are perfect for what I needed (I wanted clarity not earth shattering loudness), and the sound quality is great.The bad... 4 uses and the power adapter died! I tried to buy a new power adapter, but the only place I could find that carried an 18v output, they wanted $33.00 !!!

I can't believe no one else is complaining about this feature.1. Yes the speakers sound decent.2. The hard to turn knob thing has been fixed, it's easier to turn now.BUT the biggest annoyance is JBL has a power saving feature that turns off the speakers when it doesn't hear any noise in about 60 seconds. So you can play a song, it's done and within 1 minute the speakers power off. I then have to reach over and turn the knob to turn the speakers back on. It's fine when there is music playing, the sound is decent and the speakers stay on. But as soon as the music stops the speakers power off. This is especially annoying when I'm chatting online or doing something with intermittent sound. I might not have music in the background but I like hearing that little chime to alert me that someone has sent me an IM. But when the speakers have powered off in less than 60 seconds, I found myself turning these babies on an average of 10+ times a day. I figured this was just a setting that could be adjusted. I called JBL corporate to get more information on this to see if I could disable it or change the timing window to be longer, but they said it couldn't be adjusted.These speakers have been returned. Don't waste your time or money on these.

I like the sound from these speakers - but they keep turning off in the middle of some of my music that features quiet passages. It is very frustrating because the speakers will not stay on during some of the music I want to play for meditation. I would not buy these again, even though the sound is good and they fit great on my desk top, because speakers that won't stay on are a problem.

Please be mindful that output is (only) 6 watt and the lowest frequency response is 80Hz. Compared to cheap & non-premium-brand 2.1 system s(with subwoofer), this product generates weak sound. I understand it is by design. I know I am giving up something for the ability to carry around the speakers. For this price, hmm, I'm not sure if I can really recommend.

Very good sound, nice mids, highs and plenty of volume. I have not experienced the auto power shut off, either my laptop keeps these from going to sleep, or the newest models dont include one of the only downsides to these great speakers.

I bought this for use in my outdoor space. I tried others much more expensive one piece portable speakers and none of them are satisfactory. I guess it's just law of physics that you need to good enough size drivers, and good separation between the left/right speakers. This inexpensive pair of JBL sounds great out of the box, and performed much better in my outdoor space compared to the portable speakers that I tried from Creative Labs, Monsters and Sony.You can be 10-15 ft away and still get a decent sound. Bass is good enough. It does seem to need a little break-in. Initially it sounded very tight but it sounded much better after a few hours of playing.The only complaint I have is that the housing and the material used for the knobs feel a bit cheap. But for $29, there is not really a valid complaint.The audio jack is a cable that ends in a "male" plug. I bought a 25 ft male-to-male extension cable and had no way to plug it into these speakers.Some people complaint about the "Sleep" issue. I haven't experienced that - I am mostly using my iPad's Pandora App with these speakers.Hope that helps.

My previous speakers (which were not JBLs) were ten years old and simply died. They came with the computer that I had bought back then. I was not in any way looking to replace them, but I suppose the time had come for them to give up the ghost. I decided to purchase the JBL Duet IIIs because I have always been partial to the brand going back over thirty years. I have found JBLs to be well-made and they always seem to produce a full, warm, rich sound. I have not been disappointed by this purchase. I like the fact that compared to my previous set of speakers, the Duets take up less space particularly since there is no longer the need for the clunky sub-woofer that always got in the way under my desk. The clarity of the Duets is very good over the entire volume range, but unlike older JBL speakers that full, warm, rich sound (which I always thought was the brand's unique signature) apparently has given way to something that is lighter and airier. Nevertheless, in this price range I think I have received very good value for money.

I had been looking for computer speakers and learning that JBL is a branch of Harman Kardon. I decided to try these.I have owned several HK components during the years and I know it doesn't get more reliable than that.I sure wasn't let down.Eventhough in the product info says aluminum. Don't be fooled, thay are plastic, maybe they are refering to the color.The sound is incredible and the bass is there clear and powerful.These speakers can compete with more expensive ones.The only negatives is the color. I would prefer black and the volume bottom is kind of unconfortable, but over all thay deserve 5 stars.The negative comment on the power being turned off automatically. For me that is a plus.If you want good speakers from a trusted brand at a great price . Look no more.

The sound from these speakers is really good -- when there's sound. After one day, the speakers started going silent for no reason. The sound doesn't come back until I unplug the jack and try again. Then they sound great again until they go silent againI've had very bad luck trying to order computer speakers from Amazon. One product didn't work at all. It's money and time wasted.I strongly recommend going to a computer store for this kind of purchase.

Over the past 6 years, I have bought 4 sets of these speakers for various places in my house. They have decent sound, and are very cute, but I won't buy them again. For two of the sets, the power cord stopped working after about a year. It is pricey to get a new cord. When I got the speakers they were $25, so perhaps a year or two of use would be okay. But now they are double that, so perhaps a different set would be a better value.

Okay, so I know a lot of reviews on here go on like these are audiophile quality, and while they are nice, don't delude yourself, you are still getting what you pay for. While they are above average, the range just isn't there. I listen to almost every genre imaginable and I have to say, if it's bass you are looking for, it's simply not there.Now, let me be clear, I am not a "bass guy". I believe bass should be evenly balanced with the mid and high tones. But with these, the deeper basses simply don't exist. Which is okay, if you are mostly listening to things like rock, singer song writer stuff, even a lot of classical works pretty well. However, if you are planning on putting on some lil' wayne, let me just say, a milli will not be well served. Those songs have a very deep resonating boom boom that are part of what makes the song what it is, and with these, unfortunately, that deep end just doesn't exist in any form.So basically, they are a nice set of desktop speakers to replace a crap set of built in whatevers. For that, they serve their purpose, just don't expect miracles.

I bought two pairs of it. Both stopped working a little over a year. One pair lose one channel. The other pair became completely silent. This product seems have design flaws. And JBL only offer one year warranty, what a shame.

These speakers sound surprisingly good and full. The power saving feature that annoyed a few reviewers, doesn't bother me - when it kicks in, it's only a few seconds. I'm using them with my flat screen TV - they sound much better than the built in ones.My only complaint is that they are not very loud.

I currently own 3 sets of these speakers - one set at work, two at home - and they all have performed wonderfully! Naturally they don't have the bass "oomph" of hi-end bookshelf speakers or a full stereo system, but the Duets are great little speakers. They're unobtrusive and work well with just an iPod attached for background music at a party or a dinner without having to deal with a stereo or portable music system.

I think I've had these speakers for about 7 years and they have worked perfectly the whole time. Amazing sound quality and bass from such little speakers. The volume is excellent as well. Unfortunately, I think I pushed them a little too far recently and blew out the right speaker. I will be purchasing another pair to replace the ones I ruined. Very well worth the price!!

The reason I bought these speakers is because I like listening to Democracy Now while I'm the shower every morning. I used to try and strain and hear the words with my laptop speakers, but this got too irritating. I then tried using the stock external speakers which came with my desktop computer. These worked for a while, but I still had to strain to hear the words at times (the water in the shower is very loud). Then, I purchased these. They meet and exceed my expectations. I could hear every precious word of Amy Goodman on Democracy Now and all her guests. I don't miss a single word anymore. This is truly a blessing. Also, when playing music with them, there is actually a great bass sound for an external speaker set at this price, which does not include a subwoofer. I really do recommend this product and I think you will enjoy it.

I got these four or five years ago, and they're going strong as ever. The sound was strong and clear then, and it still is now, after using them in place of tv speakers for a good year and half, and at least 10 hours of music a week otherwise, and a good few months living in the humid bathroom. Never had any problems, even with as many times as I've knocked them over or accidentally pulled the cord. My sister almost stole them when I moved. If these died tomorrow (which I doubt), I'd buy another pair in a heartbeat.Depending on your musical taste, you can easily annoy your family members with these bad boys. Phenomenal range and power for their size.Only complaint would be that the volume knob can be hard to turn off (not adjust up and down, adjusting is fine, just to turn off). Sometimes I use my teeth, ngl.

I got these guys 6 years ago for my computer from another seller.... they sorta broke and I was left with only 1 speaker...I didnt care cause these speakers kicked butt... recently that same speaker kicked the bucket pretty hard..SO.. I bought them AGAIN here on AMAZON. I swear these are by far the best speakers for a:) the price & b:) the size. They are super easy to set up and the sound quality will surprise you. Clear high end with a pretty sturdy bass quality. I can turn them way up and hear them through out my house.I take these with me on vacation cause i can pack them easily and all I need to do is hook them up to my iPhone and have tunes in my hotel room. Nothing worse then a creepy quite hotel room with a less than useless am/fm radio alarm clock.I read a lot of bad reviews on this product but honestly these are small speakers guys.... they're not meant for your home theater or sound system for giant parties, they're for room or work area when you need some good tunes at a relatively low cost.JBL is a trusted and reliable company... buy these speakers already!

These speakers have greatly enhanced the sound of movies and music on my laptop. The first time I used them I thought, "Wow! Listen to what I've been missing!" I used to put on closed captioning to understand what was being said in some movies. With these speakers, sound is very clear and well balanced. I have not had any distortion. Since the price was so low, I thought the sound might reflect that; I was pleasantly surprised. They are easy to use. The only slight inconvenience is dealing with the cords. I move my laptop (and the speakers) around a lot. The main speaker has three cords: one to connect to an electrical outlet, one to connect to a sound source, and one to connect to the other speaker. Since I move it, the cords get in the way. But a cordless system is probably way more expensive. The speakers themselves are very portable. They are lightweight yet stable and easily balanced, even on a blanket or chair arm. This was definitely a good buy. I'm very satisfied.

I was really excited about this deal and the average to high reviews for the speakers. However, they are really cheap feeling and sound horrible. Very tingy with no bass sound at all. I had them hooked up to my computer. I am returning them today.

I bought the White JBL speakers a few years ago and they lasted for a really long time. After years of abuse, the speakers finally gave out and needed to be replaced. I chose the aluminum ones to match my Macbook Pro.Note* the color is aluminum, the speakers are made of plastic.The problem with these speakers is that they put themselves to sleep after about a minute or two of no sound coming out. The quickest way to wake them up is to unplug the jack, tap it with my finger to wake the speakers up and then plug it back in. Otherwise, the song or video will have to play for about 10 to 15 seconds before the speakers will realize they are supposed to be doing something.This would be a much better feature if it took 10-15 minutes to go to sleep. As it is, I'm probably gonna throw these speakers out and buy a different set.

I was looking for a pair of speakers I could use with my IPOD and also with my laptop. I came across these speakers and what made me take a chance on them was that they were made by JBL. I had heard nothing but good things about their speakers. Well now I now why, you won't find a better price for a pair of speakers this compact and perform like these do. I mean the the sound that it produces you would expect from a larger set of speakers, and the clearity is awesome. I would recommend these speakers to anyone looking for a small desk, or an IPOD set of speakers, I love it, and is thinking of buying another pair for my workshed. A very Good buy, you won't be disappointed.

Really...it's laptop speakers and anythings better than what you had. Good bass and a nice, full sound. The power/volume dial is a little small and difficult to turn and the max volume leaves a little to be desired but for everyday use...nice unit. Unless you're expecting Carnegie Hall, you won't be disappointed.

I purchased these to use with my computer. As soon as they plug in to the computer they simply buzz and the sound increases as you turn the volume up. This is not a subtle buzz, it is very loud. It is impossible to use these speakers. Unfortunatley, I threw the box away as was unable to return them. I absolutely HATE these speaker and they are complete garbage. I just wanted something simple and inexpensive, but they do not function at all. DO NOT BUY THEM.

I own an old model of these speakers and went back for another pair because they have a great sound for the price. The new model, however, comes with a terrible power saving feature that turns the speakers off after 2 minutes of not being used. And they're hard to get turned back on. It'll take several seconds of continuous audio, meaning you'll miss any short sounds coming from your computer (like an IM notification), and the beginning of whatever song or video you start playing. It was quite frustrating - I returned the speakers. (I used these on a MacBook Pro, last year's model.)
