They are wonderful! I was looking for something that would give me a full sound and would make listening as easy as if I was there when it was being recorded. No disappointment whatsoever. Buy them!

The JBL Duet is an accurate sounding speaker set. Base sounds are well controlled, without the loose thumping that plagues the cheap speakers. For PC speakers, I believe it will be very difficult to find a better speaker set for a cheaper price.The volume control is a bit slippery to the grip, which is the cause for subtracting one star from this review.

speakers are awesome! nice sound. the only bummer is that the knob is hard to turn - it's hard to grip. we had to put a rubber band on it so that we could turn the power/volume knob easier.

I really like these speakers and they give me good sound for the upstairs in whatever room I'm in. I use them in the bathroom getting ready for work and when I exercise. They aren't strong enough to serve as a main sound system for the downstairs, but for my purposes they are fine.The only thing I don't like about them is the wires and there is no way to dock your Ipod.

These speakers work well. I use them for laptop and iPod. The volume control knob is not suitable for someone with a hand disability, as it is not the easiest knob to turn. Nice wide base so the speakers are not tippy.Good value.

These speakers are quite a good bargain for the price. They would be perfect if the linking cable was a bit longer and if the power/volume button was a different design. The conical button is very difficult to grasp and turn without picking up the speaker.

I highly recommend these speakers after purchasing 3 sets: for my laptop at work, my home pc and one for a gift. There is no distortion, just clear, crisp, well-balanced sound. Also works well with my Sandisk MP3 player.

The speakers produce great sound with enough base. I didn't find any buzzing sound as some reviewers have mentioned. The speakers do create a wide sound stage and can fill-up a big room with good sound.

I've gone through quite a few cheapy PC speakers in the past. These little puppies pump out sound that is hard to believe. These are not symphonic sounding speakers but put out quite a nice sound for PC use. I hooked them up to my iMac which has awful internal speakers. For the price, they sound great! They also match the style of the new iMac's aluminum case. What a great Christmas present!

My poor iBook's speakers were nothing to write home about. I couldn't hear anything - and iTunes songs played all tinny sounding. I needed speakers but didn't want to shell out a lot of dough. I'd read these speakers have static, and they did at first when I plugged them in, but I haven't had any problems since. The sound is fantastic, really - and when they're not in use (but still connected and on) I don't have any static interference sounds at all. Highly recommend, great buy for the price!2012 Update: I bought these in 2007 (the price was significantly lower then) and they are still wonderful speakers. They've held up really well. My iBook is long dead, but these speakers have made it through the long haul. Highly recommend... even at the new, higher price seeing how well they hold up.

This might just be the best purchase I have made in quite some time. And I have the other reviews to thank--without all the raves (as well as the misgivings about the bass, which frankly really is not that big a deal at all--the sound is very rich and full, not at all tinny) I would never have bought these. They "looked" cheap in the pic, and I had never heard of the brand. They do in fact look quite nice in reality and the problem about them being too light might have been fixed because I have no problem at all turning it off one-handed. Thanks amazon!

After reading all these other reviews I was convinced - these were the speakers for me - the reviews made them sound amazing. I just plugged them in and...ehhh. They're OK - much better for acoustic/guitar stuff, the bass is seriously lacking so it doesn't have that "full" sound I was hoping to get. If I put some rap on it sounds only slightly better than my stupid laptop build-in speakers. If your collection consists mostly of classical or acoustic stuff with no bass - great, these are for you (especially classical sounds good). If not...well, you get the idea.

i spent hours scouring amazon for a good, more on the inexpensive side, set of speakers to give to my sister for her 17th birthday. she has a video ipod, and though she appreciated the idog i had given her the year before, it wasn't meeting her expectations sound quality wise.these speakers do.i had read the other reviews before deciding to purchase these speakers, and we weren't disappointed. you can hook these speakers up either directly to your mp3 or to a computer. they're smaller, and don't take up too much space. most importantly, for the price of these speakers, the sound quality is superb. it doesn't get scratchy or whiny if you turn the sound up higher, and it's clear at all levels. you can separate the bass a little bit too (there's a cord that attaches them) and thus get an acceptable amount of surround sound.overall, my sister is extremely satisfied with the speakers, and they are a bargain. i recommend them.

I work in a cubicle and bought these speakers for my office desk. In this setting they work great and were just what I was looking for. I read a review that mentioned the power/volume knob was impossible to turn with one hand but that's not been my experience. In fact, I can't think of a single problem or complaint I've had with these speakers in the 8 months or so that I've owned them. Everything from Rock, to Country to Classical still sounds excellent on the JBL Duet Speakers.Great sound, nice design, completely reliable. What else could you possibly want from a basic set of speakers?

when they worked the sound was good,not great- maybe 3.5 stars. But one speaker basically became inaudible after about 6 months, and now they are less than half as good. The Logitech speakers, which are cheaper and have a subwoofer, are dramatically better , even when the JBL's work properly.

These are really great sounding speakers. They are a nice size and fit well in somewhat restricted space. The only thing that stopped me from giving this 5 stars is the ridiculous on/off volume knob. This thing is an awful design. It is a rocket cone design that is difficult to turn and your fingers slip.Other than that they are great.

I'm an audio engineer, and I'm NOT easily impressed, but these little speakers are the best-sounding personal speakers I've ever heard. In fact, they're better than many larger, pricier systems.The bass response is the biggest surprise. It's natural-sounding and open, not stuffy or forced, yet it has a surprising amount of punch for such small speakers, without being the slightest bit "boomy". To my ears in my listening environment, they have an amazingly smooth frequency response across the entire audible range.In case you think I'm kidding, I usually mix on a pair of Genelec tri-amped studio monitors whose price tag was more than 100 times that of the JBL Duet speakers. On several occasions, I've opened GarageBand or Logic Pro 7 to record a musical idea and ended up doing a rough mix, forgetting that I was listening to the Duet speakers rather than the big monitors. At low levels in a near-field application (...sorry, that's audio geekspeak -- for all you normal humanoids who don't have the audiogeek mutant gene, that means the speakers are close to you...like on your desktop), these little speakers are surprisingly accurate.I've owned my Duets for almost one year. I loved them so much that I immediately bought extra sets for my kids to use with their iPods. For the money, I've never heard anything better. My thanks to the folks at JBL for creating such a terrific speaker at such a reasonable price.

I bought these speakers for my portable dvd player, and they are great. I found some on sale for $22 AUD, so for that money they are fantastic. But I wouldnt pay full price for them. a few minor flaws, LED lights on the front are quite bright, no bass/trebble control. If I had of paid full price for these, I would have been a little disapointed, but as a cheap pair of multimedia speakers, they are tops.Update: I hooked these speakers up to the computer and there is a lot of buzz. The buzz isnt present when using them with my portable DVD player. I wouldnt use these as computer speakers.

I bought these to use with a Mac Mini and now use them with a MacBook Pro. These speakers have a lot going for them:- clear, crisp sound- more than loud enough to fill any home or office space- sleek, attractive design, compliments MacBook Pro VERY wellI looked at 3-piece systems with subwoofer, but those were so large and had more cables (READ: unattractive). This system has nice sound with excellent looks. For the price, they can't be beat! I highly recommend them. (Also, no buzz with my computer -- must be the other reviewer's PC)

These small speakers offer excellent sound considering their size and price tag, but I found them extremely frustrating to use because they are so light that you can't turn them on with one hand. If you are thinking about using them with a computer on a cramped desktop, you'll find them very frustrating. You'll need enough room around the switched speaker to get a hand in to hold it down while turning the rather stiff knob with your other hand. These either need substantial weights in the bases to hold them in place (remember the nice old AT&T telephones that weighed a ton? You could actually move around the room holding the receiver without having the base fly off its stand; like most cheap modern telephones, these speakers need more weight for stability) or the knob needs to be made much easier to turn. Also, and more important, mine broke after a few months of extremely light use. Broke? Yes. Cheap Chinese circuitry is the most likely culprit. One speaker just stopped working. I'm so sick of products that spontaneously morph into trash a few months after purchase. Will the manufacturer stand behind them? No. Will the retailer? No. (For the record, I did not purchase mine from Amazon).

Amazon has a nice price on the JBL Duet Speakers (July 2006 - 36.95) dealmac is a site I used and returned to amazon.I purchased these for my office desk where I wanted a crisp sound for low volume daily listening. Anything from Ambient, to Rock and Jazz. They produce sounds nicely, nice tight crisp. If these came with a woofer unit these would be ideal speakers, as the 2-pieces alone do not produce any significant bass at all. Just the "hints" of bass in the music but no thud, if that's what you are hoping for. I did turn these up loud to listen to their full sound and they do sound good. These are perfect for offices and just daily music, sound is superb. Not for audiophiles or for people who are expecting to shake everything on their desks.Build quality is "ok". I got the white speakers and they are the nice "Mac" white plastic. The JBL logo on the speaker itself is awfully big. And the silver volume knob is made of that cheap silver flake paint over plastic which is abit tacky. One of the soft rubber pads on the bottom of these (meant to not scratch your desk) did fall off during opening but they are glued on so no big deal in placing it back on.The design is very modern and cool tho. They look nice on my desk.You will need to keep these on for abit to let the speakers fully... break in. They sound awful right out of the box and after maybe one hour of keeping these on they will sound better.On the low end of speakers out right now, these will probably sound the best and are most modern design, compared to the black boxes out there.

If you're looking for a cheap, 2-speaker solution to your computer sound needs this is a great choice. They have a great "presence" of sound. If your sitting in front of your computer or within a reasonable distance of it, these speakers have a very good sound. If you're looking for something to fill your home with sound and bass then fork over the money for a 3+ component system. As for the 60Hz noise complaints, I've found that if you max the output on your computer sound and use the speakers solely for volume the background noise is only noticable if you have the speaker knob completely cranked. For $40, this is a great speaker system. Anyone who complains that these aren't the end-all-be-all of speakers needs to realize that that costs a lot of money.

I Love these little guys. I have them on my desk to as a desktop sound system only. I don't use them as a main stereo source. I'm in a small office and each work station in the office has a pair of the Duets, and honestly for blasting your Itunes Music the sound is great, if the sound gets a lil tinny (like a tin can) or too bass heavy it's nothing a lil adjustment to the Itunes EQ can't fix. Their small with good sound clarity and pack a heavy bass sound when it counts. They can fill a 750sq ft studio office easily with it's sound. JBL has the best mini speakers out there in my opinion, I also have the JBL On Stage Speakers for iPod, AWESOME as well!!!

I bought these as a compromise to myself...I already have an AC adaptor for my iPod and so, I didn't need to buy a full unit, just the speakers. So far, I'm very pleased with these.I don't know what all the reviews are talking about when they say they're too light...I haven't had a problem turning the knob.At first, there was some static, but it was barely noticeable. The sound's good, but I agree with some other users on the bass...there isn't much.If you're just looking for a decent set of computer/mp3 player speakers, these are definitely worth it.

If you have to run the power cable next to other power cables, which you likely will, you may find that you get a loud buzz when there is no music playing. I believe this is due to improper or inadequate shielding of the power cable.When the speakers are playing audio, the sound is great, but when they're not, the buzz is fairly nerve-wracking.So, if your speakers can be wired away from other computer cables, these are good speakers. But if you need to run the power cable near the other cables, you may get a buzzing sound.

I have had these speakers for a couple of months now and I have enjoyed them considerably. Originally, my computer had been limping along with a pair of Altec Lansing speakers that came with the system. When I bought the Duet speakers, I had intended to use them with my MP3 player. After hearing the richness and depth of the sound, I decided to try them out on my computer. What an incredible difference!! These speakers have turned my no-frills, workhorse computer into a viable multimedia machine. I watched a football game on it recently, and was thrilled to hear audio that competed with my tv's surround sound. I can't believe I got this kind of sound for $40!

I am listening to these speakers as I type this review. WOW! What great sound at an incredible price! I am very serious about speaker quality and I promise you will not be dissatisfied with the sound of these JBL's. Although you will not get extremely deep bass from these speakers, you will NOT miss it. These speakers deliver big sound that is silky smooth and well balanced. You will be amazed!

I like high quality sound for my music, so I couldn't stand to listen to iTunes on my iBook, except with earphones. I wanted to be able to enjoy the flexibility of iTunes in full sound though, so I went on a search for good speakers at the lowest price possible. It didn't take much looking through reviews to see that the JBL Duet Speakers stood out. It seemed way too good to be true that such inexpensive speakers could be as good as everyone was saying, but I bought them, figuring that anything would be better than my iBook's tiny speakers. I was expecting that the sound would probably be only as good as a small CD player. Well, when my speakers arrived and I plugged them in and played one of my favorite rocking songs, I had to grin at the sound that burst from these two small speakers! It was unbelievably high quality--great bass, great highs, very clear, and capable of going way louder than I'd ever want to listen to. It was far better than a small CD player!So if you're tired of your laptop's small sound, get these! Easily portable, cool design, powerful sound, all for an unbelievably low price--what more could you ask for?!

For the size and power level, these speakers sound quite nice. But it seems as though they are not properly shielded. They produce a constant soft 60 Hz buzz that is rather annoying in a quiet environment. When my new speakers arrived I thought they were defective and exchanged them for another pair. But alas, the defect seems to be in design rather than manufacture since the replacement pair buzzes as well. If I were in an environment with some ambient noise, like an office, I might not be bothered. But in my quiet home study the buzz is quite irritating.

I agree with Brooke Allen very much. This speaker is terrible. The noise due to alternate electric is very anoying. If you tune up volumn to max, you will find it is as loud as a hungry bee... I'm going to return it very soon.

Let me start by saying I am REALLY REALLY REALLY picky about the quality of sound. I needed a pair of speakers for my office (I have an older pair of speakers that I hook my iPod up to that I wanted to replace.) Well, I came across these and then searched for as many reviews as I could about them...most of the reviews turned out to be very good as a matter of fact! After doing a search for them, I saw they were available at Office Depot so decided to purchase them in-store...however, when I went there I did not see them and was told by a sales associate they were only available at their online store. The (very nice) gentleman then convinced me to rather go for some Logitech x-230 speakers with a sub-woofer. Very hesitantly, I decided to take a chance. Well, after plugging them in and listening to a sample of music, I unplugged them 1/2 a minute later and returned them the next day. I then decided to go ahead an purchase these JBL Duet speakers. They have just arrived, I just plugged them in...am listening to them right this very moment after sampling a variety of music (classical, heavy rock, etc.) and I must say...***WOW***...they are EXCEPTIONAL!!!!!!!!! Super crisp high notes & midtones with all the background instruments clearly coming through...listening to classical music is simply a pleasure!! On the other end of the scale, the rich, deep, full-bodied bass & undertones effortlessly carry the heavy rock & deep classical sounds giving the sound the true depth it needs to really appreciate the music for what it is. I highly highly HIGHLY recommend these!!!
