I bought a pair of these from Harman Audio a few weeks ago, thinking they would be an improvement over my old Altec Lansing ACS22 speakers, which were having on-off switch problems. Frankly other than looking great, the JBLs are only average and do not impress me in sound quality or volume. The old speakers had dual 3-inch drivers and sounded "big" and "rich" and produced at least dounble the volume of the JBLs. Also, one of the JBLs fell off my desk onto the carpet and the base broke away from the upper section. So much for construction quality. I had to use PVC glue to fix it! I have since ordered a new pair of Altec Lansing computer speakers on Amazon for the princely sum of less than $20 delivered(Prime), and since they closely match my old ones in construction and specs, I have no doubt they will best the JBLs easily. One more thing...there is no separate jack for an MP3 player as stated. If you want that, you need to disconnect them from the computer.JBL Duet II High Performance Speaker System for Portable Music and PC - Black/Silver (Pair)UPDATE TO MY INITIAL THOUGHTS: Decided I was a bit too harsh in my earlier comments above. I have since done some additional break-in and they are starting to sound much better. Basically, I have played 3 different CD disks repeatedly at max volume to "loosen" them up a bit. These CDs are known for their high recorded levels. I used Rush (Vapor Trails), Jeff Beck (Jeff), and Brooks and Dunn (Borderline) with repeated plays at maximum volume for about 4-5 hours (I leave the room and close the door). The JBLs are beginning to sound a bit warmer than before, with more depth and clarity when played at normal volume now. I stand by my original remarks regarding cheap construction and still believe Altec has a better computer speaker, but these are not as bad as I first thought.

I own an older set of these speakers that have been with me for at least five years that are absolutely fantastic. I could not recommend a better set of speakers.HOWEVER.I purchased a second pair for my TV, and it turns out JBL has added a "power save" feature that turns off the speakers when they don't detect audio. This would be fine, except that it takes a significant audio signal--say, an action scene in a movie--to convince them to power back on. Sometimes they even shut down in the middle of relatively quiet scenes in movies. It definitely made them useless for watching movies at odd hours, since I would have had to keep these at movie theatre volume and my neighbours wouldn't appreciate that.I've switched the new speakers to my desktop and the old ones to my TV, which works fine for me since I can just physically turn the desktop ones off and on at will. But I cannot recommend these speakers to anyone unless you can guarantee you're buying the old-style speakers without the power save feature.

These speakers have a “feature” that makes them shut off if they’re not playing sound for ~60 seconds. I suppose this is a nice energy-saving trick (as if they’re sucking that much power when they’re not playing), but that means they'll be off and won’t play chimes, warnings, or notifications on your PC if you’re not also listening to music. Additionally, I use these in my cubicle, which means I have to keep the volume down so as not to annoy my neighbors. There are times that, even though the track is still playing, it may have gotten to a quiet part, or transitioned between songs, and these things shut down. It’s annoying.Sonically, they’re great for a desktop application. I don’t play them very loudly during the day, and of course the bass response isn’t that great. I chose to spend the money on better full-range speakers, rather than buy less-quality satellites with a token subwoofer at the same price point. If only they wouldn’t shut off!

I already owned a pair of these speakers from several years ago and absolutely loved them, so I picked up a second set. Some time after I bought my original speakers, however, JBL added a 'power-save' feature that causes the speakers to turn themselves off if they don't detect an audio signal. It sounds like a great feature, and for awhile it worked. The speakers would be fairly quiet but then they'd come back on after about 5-10 seconds of audio stream (this was a tad inconvenient in that you would miss the beginning of audio files, but it wasn't that big a deal). The problem is that now, the speakers turn off after about 30 seconds of non-activity, and I'm starting to lose sound even when an audio file is playing. The only way to get the sound back on is to constantly turn them off and back on again. It's a shame, because the sound quality on these is quite stellar, but having to turn the speakers on and off each time I want to listen to music is ridiculous. If you check the other low-rated reviews, you will see that others had the same issue. JBL please fix this! You have a quality product here with one very very annoying dealbreaker of a flaw.

In terms of sound quality, these do a great job for the price and are up amongst the best 2-speaker systems. If you want a bit more oomph I'd recommend looking at Logitech's 3 speaker set that includes a sub-woofer - we have one of those too).What I dislike about the JBLs are usability features. The biggest frustration is the volume/power control which is made out of cheap fake-chrome plastic that is hard to grip. To turn the speakers off, you rotate the control all the way to the left until it clicks. The amount of effort required to do this means you have to use two hands (one to steady the speaker). Same deal turning them on and, of course, your volume is now zero so you have to turn it back up to the level you usually listen at. A much better solution would be a push on/off control that also turns to adjust the volume. That way you could just use one hand to power on and off and it would also preserve your chosen volume setting.The other thing I don't like are the bright green LED lights on both speakers. They practically beg you to turn the speakers off when not in use. I'd much rather not have them at all and just be able to look at the position of the push on/off control to know whether the power is on. Failing that, something with more of a subtle glow would be an improvement.

I bought these for my husband's computer.They sound very clear and handle every day computer sound just fine. Most music sounds excellent too.Small size fits nicely on the desk. They shut themselves off when not being used to save power. Volume knob on one speaker for easy use. JBL makes good products and this is the second speaker set I have bought from that brand.Where they fall a little short, is when playing harder music (ex - Metallica, AC/DC, or anything with a lot of deep base). If you will use them for that type of music, upgrade to a more powerful set or get some Bose speakers with more wattage and you will be fine.

The pros: I've owned these speakers for a couple weeks now to evaluate and must admit, they sound everybit as good as most all other reviewers state. I am currently using them with one of my desktop computers. Over the years I have owned a half dozen or so different multimedia speaker systems to use either with a desktop/laptop Pc and with MP3's, Iphones etc. Of all the multimedia speakers I have owned these JBL's are half the price I paid for the next cheapest down the line, but I did not give up anything when it comes to sound quality and accuracy. I am very pleased to discover these speakers sound every bit as good as the more expensive multimedia speakers I've owned. The sound is clear, defined and there is no overemphasized sound across their frequency bandwidth. For their size and considering there is no sub-woofer, they have descent bass,they won't rattle your walls but then I don't think anyone should be expecting that from these little gems, the bass is tight and not muddled, the midrange is pleasingly warm and the highs are clear and not shrill. Speaking of clear, when there is no sound or the volume level is turned down low I can hear no hum or any other harmonics. The monitor for the PC I am currently using these speakers with is an ole CRT monitor, I have the speakers snug to the sides of the crt and they create no video distortion on the crt, so they are well shielded. Although I have my speakers separated by only about 2 1/2ft, they can be separated by as much as 6ft.The Cons: I only have one, but will mention a few details about this product that could be pontentially a con for others.In order to turn the speakers on/off or to increase/decrease volume it's pretty much a two hand affair. Due to the speakers lightweight and design of the control knob I always need to use one hand to hold the speaker in place while using the other to turn the control knob.No left/right channel balance control. This may or may not be a con to you. I personally set what speakers I do have that has this control center balanced anyway, so I'm neutral on the lack of this feature.No Subwoofer. Once again no problem, I knew this prior to purchase and I was not looking for booming bass to begin with and had no high expectations of low deep bass from a pair of speakers this size or within it's price range.Overall these are very good sounding, good quality, and nice looking speakers for the price. Don't expect them to fill a concert hall with lavish sound or to rattle any nic nacks off the shelves because if so you will be disappointed. In a small to medium sized room you'll most likely be pleasantly surprised at how good they really sound. In their price range I feel they are the best speakers out there.

Let me start by saying that I'm a definite loyalist to JBL and their quality speakers they make on all levels. After reading all the reviews on these, I bought them. The first thing that kind of irritated me- not sure why- but did, was that the quiet turn on is annoyingly long. When I listen to voicemails at work on these, I have to start the messages, wait for the speakers to turn on 1/2 way through, then rewind and start over to hear it all. Maybe I just got a bad set. The left-main speaker has also pretty much died, and no I don't crank these too far.Again, maybe I just got a bad set, but my old set of Harmon Kardon's sounded better, were more reliable, and worked immediately. I'll be purchasing something else next time for sure.Seems like everyone else loves them though. So take my review however you want. I just expected more from JBL, even if they are a cheaper set.

We're hooked on Pandora and Netflix. We travel a frequently so I wanted to use my laptop and tablets as a portable entertainment systems.I have a high end gaming laptop with decent speakers, including a sub-woofer built in bottom of case however audio was disappointing. Tablets will never have decent audio without headphones due to the small case.Our portable entertainment systems are now a reality. These speakers performed well beyond our expectations. The punchy mids with deep full bass will make Netflix and Pandora enjoyable on laptops and tablets. We were so impressed I ordered a second set for an old laptop I put in our home gym. Great way to get some use out of old laptops or tablets.Well worth the $40

I bought these speakers because they are beautiful, and look nice in my bedroom. My TV is mounted on the wall and I ran a cord to the speakers, which are on my nightstands. They are unobtrusive, and I can listen to the TV late at night without having the TV volume up too loud.PLUSES: These speakers are not only beautiful, but sound great as well.MINUSES: The volume button is absolutely maddening. I can't believe the engineer who designed this. Had they actually USED the product, they'd have figured out you have to hold the speaker with one hand, while grasping the button with another hand to turn it.REGARDING THE BUZZ: My speakers buzzed occasionally too. Discovered this was caused by setting my cell phone next to them. (I don't do that anymore.)ABOUT THE REACH: If you want to spread these speakers apart (like I did.. each on one side of a queen bed), you will need Parts Express RCA Extension Cord 10 feet.Overall, I really like these. Great sound and unobtrusive on my nightstands.

Not quiet Harman Kardon Sound however I wasn't expecting this to be for the money it costs. The sound, the sound is good. However these did not impress me. I have high standards. . I was expecting better since this is Harman but since its JBL the quality is lower. The way these sound is pretty good, but pretty bad. Let me start with the treble. The treble is clear but could be higher quality. The mids are barely there. And the bass well its there but its boring.For the price well these are O.K. I you're looking for harman kardon sound quality like the sound sticks then don't get these find something better. Too bad harman kardon does not make a 2 speaker system.If you are not an audiophile these are O.K. barely.

I've gone through a lot of Duets. The whites and the silvers.I don't know how else to say it, but comparing these to your typical budget 2.1s, these sound more accurate but are not as fun to listen to. They can only kick out a few low end frequencies however. Sound quality of pretty decent. I find they produce some decent mids and highs.I find that adding these to a dull 2.1 system will really make your sound shine. If you have a dual output,4.1, or anything wth more outputs on your sound card, these will complement your lousy 2.1 speakers and produce a pretty rich sound in the room.I hate buying them new. And although I am that type of person that bought 3 pairs of these throughout my lifetime, I can't spend $50 or more on these. For a little more, you can get some better speakers that will sound much better on their own.Look for a used pair. They are very popular, often on sale in different places. A lot of folks have owned these and they came in several generations but its all the same. All 3 pairs I owned seemed very durable and I doubt they give out any time soon.I don't recommend these if you intend to use them as your only sound source. But I highly recommend them if you wanted to add a pair or several pairs of speakers to your room. Just don't pay retail; they aren't worth it.

I am honestly amazed by the sound these things produce. Showed signs of greatness out of the box but slight tweaking to the lows and highs makes them perfect. I have them connected my macbook and I find the rock equalizer setting brings out the best in these speakers. Also better suited for vocals, unplugged rock, instrumental and classical, over modern music in my opinion. I have owned a pair of Bose companion 2's in the past and while I would say the Bose is louder, the sound stage on these is far superior. You cannot go wrong for the price!

These speakers are fantastic. They are relatively small, but have great sound quality and can really blast music. I've had these speakers for months and use them all of the time and have never had an issue with static or interference like some of the other reviews. I even regularly keep my iPhone and other electronics near them and haven't had any issues. They were definitely a great purchase.

The sound quality is very good from these speakers and they look very nice. But I have two issues with them.There is an auto on/off that functions when there is a signal to them. It is a great idea because then you don't have to turn them off and on. But if the volume is not up all the way from the input they don't turn on, and sometimes will just turn themselves off. Also, sometimes they don't turn on even though music is playing with volume up all the way, so then you have to turn them off and back on. And if watching youtube or something, you have to turn off and on again because it is somewhere around a 30 second delay to auto off.Second, I purchased these in August of 2011. They just stopped working this week. So I got 14 months use out of them, just outside the warranty period.

i bought these speakers for use with a hp 27inch monitor and a mac mini. i could not be HAPPIER for the price and size they pack a nice little punch. now sure you can spend a lot more and get roaring thundering base and huge sound but if your space and budget are limited these are the speakers for you! they look great (silver & white) matches the mac mini. size is perfect for smaller desks. (p.s. i thought i might need a subwoofer, but they have a good thump to them)

I was looking for a set of speakers to have at my desk at work that would give me great sound quality but wouldn't take up a lot of desk space. These speakers sound amazing, and not only are they the perfect size but they're very attractive as well. I couldn't be happier with JBL's Duet Speaker System!

These speakers are great for the computer. The sound quality is wonderful. I bought an older pair of white ones a few years ago that only stop working because of the cord that plugs into the headphone jack, but even they can still be tweaked. I'm sold on JBL speakers for life.

I must say, these little babies PERFORM. Took 'em out, hooked 'em up, (EASY!) and listened to some SANTANA. Well defined full-range sound that is startling and rich in such small speakers!My previous Multi-Media speakers were a well loved pair of old Jesters. They had wonderful character after a chance to "stretch their legs". These JBL DUETS promise more of the same. More after I break them in..

Wanted a pair of inexpensive speakers to reduce digital glare from my Macbook Pro. Did not expect the big warm sound from these little guys. Bass is full and woody. Piano is crisp and clear, though, i can't distinquist a Yamaha from a Steinway. Trumpet is bright. Sax is reedy or throaty depending on the artist. Voices are warm and involving. Good buy.

Very solid sound for the money. If you want great sound, check out Harmon Kardon Sound Sticks. But if you want a decent pair of speakers for you computer, I'd take these over similarly priced computer speakers like Logitechs.My advice: If you want a sub, spend some more money. The 2.1 options sub-100 are generally poor. You can get 'more' bass with the sub on these, but its bloated, slow and in my opinion detracts from the overall SQ. Save up for Soundsticks or just get a solid 2.0 system like this.

I used to have a pair of Bose speakers, which are good speakers but I thought they sounded more like my Logitech 2.1 than my Bose home speakers. They sounded a tad muffled, but had very powerful Bass. I would have been fine with it except that they were a little too large and also did not look very nice on my desk. So I gave them to my uncle.These JBL speakers look really modern and are a perfect match for my new Mac Mini Server. I do not see the point of buying a very slim computer, only to buy large speakers like the Bose. These are aesthetically pleasing and clean sounding as well.Pros:1. Balanced sound - Great for listening to iTunes and movies.2. Good looks - Silver matches the look of the Mac Mini perfectly.3. Very loud4. Reasonable price considering they are made by JBL.5. Saves spaceCons:1. Bass not ideal for having a dance party(Then again, these are computer speakers)Summary:If you are looking for computer speakers, these are excellent in all respects. If you are looking to replace your $5,000 dollar sound system, then you need to buy an equivalent system. If you level set your expectation for 40 bucks, then you will be as happy as I am.
