Let me start by saying that I'm a definite loyalist to JBL and their quality speakers they make on all levels. After reading all the reviews on these, I bought them. The first thing that kind of irritated me- not sure why- but did, was that the quiet turn on is annoyingly long. When I listen to voicemails at work on these, I have to start the messages, wait for the speakers to turn on 1/2 way through, then rewind and start over to hear it all. Maybe I just got a bad set. The left-main speaker has also pretty much died, and no I don't crank these too far.Again, maybe I just got a bad set, but my old set of Harmon Kardon's sounded better, were more reliable, and worked immediately. I'll be purchasing something else next time for sure.Seems like everyone else loves them though. So take my review however you want. I just expected more from JBL, even if they are a cheaper set.

We're hooked on Pandora and Netflix. We travel a frequently so I wanted to use my laptop and tablets as a portable entertainment systems.I have a high end gaming laptop with decent speakers, including a sub-woofer built in bottom of case however audio was disappointing. Tablets will never have decent audio without headphones due to the small case.Our portable entertainment systems are now a reality. These speakers performed well beyond our expectations. The punchy mids with deep full bass will make Netflix and Pandora enjoyable on laptops and tablets. We were so impressed I ordered a second set for an old laptop I put in our home gym. Great way to get some use out of old laptops or tablets.Well worth the $40

I bought these speakers because they are beautiful, and look nice in my bedroom. My TV is mounted on the wall and I ran a cord to the speakers, which are on my nightstands. They are unobtrusive, and I can listen to the TV late at night without having the TV volume up too loud.PLUSES: These speakers are not only beautiful, but sound great as well.MINUSES: The volume button is absolutely maddening. I can't believe the engineer who designed this. Had they actually USED the product, they'd have figured out you have to hold the speaker with one hand, while grasping the button with another hand to turn it.REGARDING THE BUZZ: My speakers buzzed occasionally too. Discovered this was caused by setting my cell phone next to them. (I don't do that anymore.)ABOUT THE REACH: If you want to spread these speakers apart (like I did.. each on one side of a queen bed), you will need Parts Express RCA Extension Cord 10 feet.Overall, I really like these. Great sound and unobtrusive on my nightstands.

Not quiet Harman Kardon Sound however I wasn't expecting this to be for the money it costs. The sound, the sound is good. However these did not impress me. I have high standards. . I was expecting better since this is Harman but since its JBL the quality is lower. The way these sound is pretty good, but pretty bad. Let me start with the treble. The treble is clear but could be higher quality. The mids are barely there. And the bass well its there but its boring.For the price well these are O.K. I you're looking for harman kardon sound quality like the sound sticks then don't get these find something better. Too bad harman kardon does not make a 2 speaker system.If you are not an audiophile these are O.K. barely.

I've gone through a lot of Duets. The whites and the silvers.I don't know how else to say it, but comparing these to your typical budget 2.1s, these sound more accurate but are not as fun to listen to. They can only kick out a few low end frequencies however. Sound quality of pretty decent. I find they produce some decent mids and highs.I find that adding these to a dull 2.1 system will really make your sound shine. If you have a dual output,4.1, or anything wth more outputs on your sound card, these will complement your lousy 2.1 speakers and produce a pretty rich sound in the room.I hate buying them new. And although I am that type of person that bought 3 pairs of these throughout my lifetime, I can't spend $50 or more on these. For a little more, you can get some better speakers that will sound much better on their own.Look for a used pair. They are very popular, often on sale in different places. A lot of folks have owned these and they came in several generations but its all the same. All 3 pairs I owned seemed very durable and I doubt they give out any time soon.I don't recommend these if you intend to use them as your only sound source. But I highly recommend them if you wanted to add a pair or several pairs of speakers to your room. Just don't pay retail; they aren't worth it.

I am honestly amazed by the sound these things produce. Showed signs of greatness out of the box but slight tweaking to the lows and highs makes them perfect. I have them connected my macbook and I find the rock equalizer setting brings out the best in these speakers. Also better suited for vocals, unplugged rock, instrumental and classical, over modern music in my opinion. I have owned a pair of Bose companion 2's in the past and while I would say the Bose is louder, the sound stage on these is far superior. You cannot go wrong for the price!

These speakers are fantastic. They are relatively small, but have great sound quality and can really blast music. I've had these speakers for months and use them all of the time and have never had an issue with static or interference like some of the other reviews. I even regularly keep my iPhone and other electronics near them and haven't had any issues. They were definitely a great purchase.

The sound quality is very good from these speakers and they look very nice. But I have two issues with them.There is an auto on/off that functions when there is a signal to them. It is a great idea because then you don't have to turn them off and on. But if the volume is not up all the way from the input they don't turn on, and sometimes will just turn themselves off. Also, sometimes they don't turn on even though music is playing with volume up all the way, so then you have to turn them off and back on. And if watching youtube or something, you have to turn off and on again because it is somewhere around a 30 second delay to auto off.Second, I purchased these in August of 2011. They just stopped working this week. So I got 14 months use out of them, just outside the warranty period.

i bought these speakers for use with a hp 27inch monitor and a mac mini. i could not be HAPPIER for the price and size they pack a nice little punch. now sure you can spend a lot more and get roaring thundering base and huge sound but if your space and budget are limited these are the speakers for you! they look great (silver & white) matches the mac mini. size is perfect for smaller desks. (p.s. i thought i might need a subwoofer, but they have a good thump to them)

I was looking for a set of speakers to have at my desk at work that would give me great sound quality but wouldn't take up a lot of desk space. These speakers sound amazing, and not only are they the perfect size but they're very attractive as well. I couldn't be happier with JBL's Duet Speaker System!

These speakers are great for the computer. The sound quality is wonderful. I bought an older pair of white ones a few years ago that only stop working because of the cord that plugs into the headphone jack, but even they can still be tweaked. I'm sold on JBL speakers for life.

I must say, these little babies PERFORM. Took 'em out, hooked 'em up, (EASY!) and listened to some SANTANA. Well defined full-range sound that is startling and rich in such small speakers!My previous Multi-Media speakers were a well loved pair of old Jesters. They had wonderful character after a chance to "stretch their legs". These JBL DUETS promise more of the same. More after I break them in..

Wanted a pair of inexpensive speakers to reduce digital glare from my Macbook Pro. Did not expect the big warm sound from these little guys. Bass is full and woody. Piano is crisp and clear, though, i can't distinquist a Yamaha from a Steinway. Trumpet is bright. Sax is reedy or throaty depending on the artist. Voices are warm and involving. Good buy.

Very solid sound for the money. If you want great sound, check out Harmon Kardon Sound Sticks. But if you want a decent pair of speakers for you computer, I'd take these over similarly priced computer speakers like Logitechs.My advice: If you want a sub, spend some more money. The 2.1 options sub-100 are generally poor. You can get 'more' bass with the sub on these, but its bloated, slow and in my opinion detracts from the overall SQ. Save up for Soundsticks or just get a solid 2.0 system like this.

I used to have a pair of Bose speakers, which are good speakers but I thought they sounded more like my Logitech 2.1 than my Bose home speakers. They sounded a tad muffled, but had very powerful Bass. I would have been fine with it except that they were a little too large and also did not look very nice on my desk. So I gave them to my uncle.These JBL speakers look really modern and are a perfect match for my new Mac Mini Server. I do not see the point of buying a very slim computer, only to buy large speakers like the Bose. These are aesthetically pleasing and clean sounding as well.Pros:1. Balanced sound - Great for listening to iTunes and movies.2. Good looks - Silver matches the look of the Mac Mini perfectly.3. Very loud4. Reasonable price considering they are made by JBL.5. Saves spaceCons:1. Bass not ideal for having a dance party(Then again, these are computer speakers)Summary:If you are looking for computer speakers, these are excellent in all respects. If you are looking to replace your $5,000 dollar sound system, then you need to buy an equivalent system. If you level set your expectation for 40 bucks, then you will be as happy as I am.

I ordered these speakers as a gift for my wife, after having considered the more expensive Bose Companion® 2 speakers. I had listened to a demo of the Bose speakers in a retail store and thought they sounded, well, just pretty good. I suspected that was about as good as it would get within the $100-or-less price range. However, after reading numerous rave reviews of these JBLs online, I thought I'd order them so we could give them a try. I was a little skeptical, quite honestly because of their low price. When the package arrived and I unpacked the speakers, I became even more skeptical. The speakers were much lighter than I thought they would be. I suppose I'm an old-school audiophile who had thought that the only way to accomplish big, rich bass is to have a heavy magnet driving the woofer. What a surprise when we connected the speakers and listened! The bass was surprisingly rich, full, and deep. The high end sounded very good, as well. In short, these speakers sound surprisingly great for their size, their weight, and their low price. I highly recommend this product.

I have had these speakers for over 5 years and they still work great and sound amazing for the price. You may occasionally get buzzing noise from a mobile phone, but for me this is rare and not an issue.

If you like rock music and aren't looking for intense bass, then these work great as a pair of computer speakers without sub-woofer. I had speakers with a sub-woofer before, and it was just a useless waste of space since it was under my desk. I think the most important thing in a set of speakers is mid-ranges, and these deliver excellent mid-range sound.

It has a satisfying sound and performs the function for which I bought it. The lack of a final star has to do with the on-off-volume knob which (and this could be my own paranoia) does not feel as solid as I would like. I worry it might go on the blink sooner rather than later. But I do not have evidence of this.

Ordered these for my office that I share with a honking production printing copier. With these, I'm able to drown out the sound of that, and the presses and the press operators in the warehouse next door! They also sound pretty good even when there's not a lot of background noise.

While I don't care much for the shape of these speaker's housing, they've proven to be a good set for sitting on my kitchen counter playing my MP3 player's tunes and news. I've had them for over a year now, without a single problem or issue.

I'm a JBL fan and these speakers do not disappoint. They have excellent sound (including excellent bass... a must-have) considering their size. Excellent volume too! The footprint is small compared to their height so they tip over relatively easy but it isn't a big enough issue to take away a star. The JBL legacy continues. A+

I am typically a JBL fan, however I was disappointed in this speaker system. They were much larger than I had anticipated - which would have been fine if the sound was worth it. But the audio sounded distant and tinny something I would expect out of a $10 pair of speakers for a kid - not from JBL.

I was looking for speakers like Jazz J-703 (those I left in Europe when moved to NA). I found and bought Duet III about a year ago for $100, that was a "discounted" at that time. Though they were an improvement to my laptop speakers, they are too light and weak. The left speaker now tinkles when played at higher volumes than 70%. That's a disappointment. Read that guy's review, who said "you may show them to impress your friends, but don't turn them on". I did read his review before buying, but, that's silly, it was not enough to retain me from the purchase.

Crackled. Made terrible noise when plugged and unplugged into new imac. Went out half the time, finally just stopped going on or working after only three years. I disliked them and the sound was sub-par for what I paid. Sorry but would never buy again.

I have these on a shelf in the office, plugged into various audio sources. Obviously, for Symphony Orchestras, they're not going to compete with a surround sound system costing thousands, but the quality is still amazing,even for Beethoven or Pavarotti. In fact, fir voice, whether Pavarotti or Joplin, they're outstanding, as well as rock, solo piano, et al.

I have purchased numerous JBL speakers over the years.... From scs 135 surround-sound system, to Encounter computer speakers, to 3 On-Stage ipod docks, to Duet system when Creature system died....And throughout, they have sounded great, for the limited time they actually worked... When some items inevitably failed (pre-maturely), I encountered the most pathetic customer service imaginable; there might as well have not been an actual company in existence, based on the "support" I received... (No one to EVER speak with & then the most ridiculous repair prices imaginable!)Now, with the utterly un-usable Duet system, I have sworn to NEVER again buy JBL, and I shall tell THE ENTIRE PLANET... NOT TO BUY JBL !!!These speakers CONSTANTLY stop producing sound, in the name of energy savings... Theoretically, they stop after several minutes of no sound... In reality, a few seconds of silence & they go mute... I have to tap on the keyboard volume buttons for several seconds to "Wake them the hell up"!! I want to throw them on the ground & crush them underfoot... $40 be damned... Without a doubt, the SINGLE DUMBEST "Innovation" I've ever suffered... They sound great, if & when they EVER decide to work.... It is WAY past my tolerance level of putting up with Garbage like this....So, for anyone who wants a product to work properly, and not die pre-maturely.... DO NOT BUY JBL products!!!

I have 4 sets of small JBL speakers. I have tried and returned other brands. Recently I drank the kool-aid and tried the Jawbone Big Jambox, which cost $269. The Jawbone's sound was terrible compared to the JBL's. JBL speakers are excellent.

I was looking for speakers for my desktop MAC and these are great. JBL makes good speakers - they are light and the sound imaging is really good - no static or base rattle. Really good small speakers for the price.

I had an older pair (late 90s) of JBL computer speakers. We are using them for our TV (we are too cheap to buy tv speakers.) Anyway, we bought jbl again based on that previous pair. They have performed admirably. I would buy them again.

I have a small 15" White Toshiba HDTV in my kitchen. Great picture but poor sound and low volume. These JBL Duets work great (using the TV headphone jack) sitting on both sides of it. They sound really great. No buzzing or distortion, good bass, mid and treble. I found that moving the volume control is a bit slippery (as others have mentioned here) so I used plumbing thin white thread tape (used on faucet threads)once around it and solved the problem. I have had no problems with the power saving feature using 95% volume on the TV and 30-50% volume on the JBL's. As for the speaker green lights, I used some satin white paint with an artist brush to tone it down.

I bought these to use with a record player, and couldn't be happier. They look great up on a bookcase shelf; blend in well and have a nice tapered look. And the sound it as good as I could have hoped...makes my LPs sounds as good as I could imagine they ever could.

These are great speakers, just what I wanted. The one thing I don't like is the poorly designed on/off knob. While it works fine for volume control, you need two hands to turn it off or on. Even though it has ridges, you can't get a good enough grip on it to turn with sufficient force past the on/off point without holding it steady with your other hand, or leaving it mounted or wedged somewhere where it is held from moving (which defeats its portability). Even with this constant inconvenience, I still like them.Update: After poring through other reviews I found suggestions for fixing the slippery knob problem. A little superglue (let it dry!), thin velcro loop strips between the ribs, a rubber band and tape. I tried cutting the end of the little finger of a disposable glove, but that didn't fit snugly enough. I had previously tried a rubber band, but it kept rolling back off the bullet shape. I tried the scotch tape, which does work - you want a strip 1 3/8" long, ideally 1/4" or slightly wider. Then I looked down into my drawer and saw a pen with a cushy gel grip sleeve on it. Push this onto the knob and it works really well. I took it off and sliced a little over 1/4" from the end and stuck that bit on the knob. Mine is clear and looks good.But it's amazing how little friction is really needed to make the on/off turn easily. When I took the tape off I found that just the faint residue (hardly detectable) made it still work for a while, although that wore off. Roughing up the surface with sandpaper might work but I did not try that. Anyway, I hope this helps.

I have had these since Feb 2012. I am a college student and these go with me everywhere. Even though they have seen a lot of use, they still work perfectly. The sound quality is very good, especially for the price. The bass is a little light, but the mid and high tones are clear.If you turn the volume up more than 2/3 of the way, the music tends to distort, especially in the bass tones.Very durable, great sound quality, and a good price!

Well where to start...Been looking and looking for a cheaper set of 2.0 speakers for awhile now. I was getting sick of all the wires from my 5.1 setup and just recently purchased a great set of 5.1 headphones so I just needed a basic 2.0 set of desktop speakers to fill the void of when I'm not using the headset. There was a lot of great raving reviews on these things and amazon warehouse deals had a set cheap that I could not pass up. AT first when I opened the box I was thinking wow they are light and I'm not expecting to much from them. Well they sound great for the price I paid. Do I think they are worth the original 43 bucks on here, no I dont but at the price I paid sure.The highs and mids are a little lacking on these and being overpowered by the bass....yes these little suckers have plenty of bass! They are hitting their expected low of 60hz with ease! That being said, to my ears the highs and mids were being hidden by the deeper bass extension. An easy fix for anyone who thinks the same is to go into your sound card settings and mess with the equalizer. It helped a ton and now mine sound just how my ears want them to. They do start to distort a little when pushed really hard but with the volume knob anywhere from slightly over middle on downwards they sound fabulous. I think the looks are very appealing on them and the green LED power lights dont bother me one bit. If your distracted by green LED's they may bother you cause they are fairly bright. For me it isnt an issue. The power brick is pretty big so make sure you have room on your surge protector! It covers up 3 slots on mine. Hookup is easy...connect them to one another then plug into the green port on your soundcard or headphone jack then plug the power cord into them and thats it. The speaker with the volume knob is the right speaker. At first I had them backwards so thats just a heads up to someone before they actually hook these up. All in all I dont think there is anything in the price range that I've heard that sounds any better.

Let me just start this review by saying that I have owned a pair of these speakers for about 5 years. I've used them exclusively for that entire duration, and there are several key points that I feel is important for your consideration:Pros:1. Decent sound quality at low-to-moderate volume.2. Long cords which will easily accommodate most desk setups.3. Aesthetically pleasing design.Cons:1. The knob is virtually impossible to turn with one hand. It's very tight and too smooth to get a good grip. This is a minor problem, but it can be a little annoying when you just want to make a quick adjustment.2. Buzzing. These things buzz very noticeably once you've turned them up past about the mid-point in volume. It's subtle at first, but this effect becomes progressively worse as time goes on. I noticed the buzzing in them from day 1.3. Quality degradation. As I said previously, I've owned a pair of these for 5 years. For about the past 2 years, the left speaker has been blown out entirely and doesn't emit any sound other than a buzzing/crackling. About 6 months ago, the problem spread to the second speaker. I have no choice but to replace them now, and I don't think I'll be getting another pair.It should be noted that due to the intolerable buzzing these speakers emit at higher-end volume levels, I never had them up that high. I didn't blow them out from overuse at high volumes, in case you were wondering the cause.In conclusion:If you're looking for a pair of speakers that are inexpensive, decent at moderate volume, and don't need to last more than a couple years: These are okay.However, if you're going to drop 60 bucks on speakers, I'd advise you to carefully consider alternatives.
