I use a computer sound system mainly to transcribe sessions with my teacher. This is a very demanding environment acoustically. I also listen to music and general website noise from time to time. This review is really a supplement to many other reviews, here. The perfect system for me would be small in size and large in sound. It would have decent fidelity and very little in the way of distortion. It would have a convenient way to turn power on/off, and the wiring to the satellites would be long enough. My previous system (Acoustic Authority A-3780RB Black 2.1 180 Watt Pro Series Subwoofer Satellite System) had the long wires and the remote on/off, and it could go very loud. But the sound quality was awful and the distortion level made me feel physically unwell after a short time, especially with music.PROS:This little system has a lot going for it. The sound is very nice and the system is small in size.Setup is easy. I did it without referencing anything but what I could see on the equipment with my eyes.Controls are basic and easy to use.CONS:It's just not attractive. It really isn't. I bought this in black. I think the white color would be even uglier. It lacks a convenient on/off switch as reviewers have noted. Also as reviewers have noted, the wires are just a couple/few feet too short to let you place the satellites anywhere you like. It's not terribly loud - it will do the job well in a reasonably quiet (normal) room. In the summer, when I have fans going like crazy it just cannot overcome that and I have to switch to earphones.DISCUSSION:Its small size and reasonable cost mean the sound volume will never blow you away. I'm glad they stuck with that compromise rather than producing something that would put out a whole lot of ugly noise at high volume.I wanted clean sound, and I got that. To get bigger sound, I would have to spend quite a bit more money, which I just was not willing to do at that point. If you can live with the need to use a power strip with an on/off switch to provide that remote function, and can adapt to the relatively short wiring, then this could be a great choice for someone with a reasonably quiet environment.I have had this set up a short time and cannot speak to the reliability factor, yet. If it fails, I will probably toss it and start looking for a serious system.

First off, I owned the Creature II speakers before these, and I absolutely loved them. After four years of great listening, I felt compelled to buy the Creature IIIs when the balance knobs on the Creature II started to get shaky and sometimes lost connection.Pros: These speakers look great and sound excellent at low-medium volume. Balance knobs work as they should.Cons: Power cord falls out easily and the touch-sensitive buttons on satellite do not respond nearly as well as the ones on previous versions did. With these buttons, the mute function works the least often. Bass starts to deteriorate at what I'd consider medium volume on previous version.Other: The little green LEDs on the bottom of the satellites aren't in this edition. It doesn't affect audio quality at all, but it was a nice feature to let you know if your speakers were on. Another useful feature JBL removed from this edition is the 'volume click', a little noise that let you know that you were successfully changing the volume of the set. Now, I'm not sure if my touch registers because of the small increment size and inconsistent registration.Overall these provide a good 'computer' listening experience, but for anything more than personal listening, these are not the speakers for you. JBL seems to have dropped the ball on audio and interface quality in exchange for (admittedly excellent) aesthetics.

I've tried quite a few other speaker systems - over the years and just recently. I had an original Creature speaker set, which I really liked, and so after moves I updated to the latest. The subwoofer is a lot smaller than previous models, but has the same power as far as I can tell.I've used them as computer speakers for a long time - iTunes and gaming, and they never disappoint. The sound is exceptionally clear, and has a lot of power - so much so that I rarely, if ever, turn them up much more than about 50%.Recently I've been looking for a mid-range speaker system for my HD TV, and while I've tried some surround sound, some expensive 5.1 sets and none have yet beaten this 2.1 speaker system. I'd highly recommend this for most people and situations. Unless you're going for a two hundred plus solution, these are the speakers to get!The only complaint with this generation, is that the power cord doesn't seem to sit as tightly as it should, so if I kick it under the desk it can sometimes dislodge enough to cut out. But that's certainly no reason to skip these!

These are very good and clear sounding, unique and good looking, small and light 2.1 speakers, suitable for use with computers and portable devices. The sound quality/signature would be best suited for music( most genres), occasional gaming and movies. When I plugged them on for the first time, I was surprised by the loudness of the really really tiny side speakers. They would be sufficient to fill a 15ft by 15ft room with reasonably loud sound. The subwoofer is very large compared to the speakers but very light. There are volume, bass and treble controls. The volume controls are metallic touch buttons. The touch buttons may be better than knobs if you change volume very frequently, I have had problems with knob and slide volume controls in past, but not sure about that. The volume control however is not as granular as I would have liked it to be, you may have to adjust your source volume if you need to vary it over a wide range. Sound quality is very good over the entire frequency range, no appreciable distortion at higher volumes. Bass would be sufficient for most listeners, but may not be for excess bass lovers. To sum up, below $100 it would be very difficult to find another set of speakers, that would beat these in terms of design or sound quality.

right from the beginning I have had problems with this speaker. I had a roommate that had the creature II and they sounded great which is what caused me to want to get a set for myself. I bought the CreatureIII in November of 2011 and now January 2013 I cant stand these. From the very beginning even to today the sound has always sounded good, HOWEVER, if you even slightly touch one of the satellites that speaker will go out. And God forbid if you touch the subwoofer. The whole system will go down or you'll loose the subwoofer and controller but the left satellite will continue. Every time my wife cleans the house I have to fiddle with all the wire to get the connection to be just right so that I can get that great sound back.Maybe youll be lucky and wont have this problem but this set is going into the kids playroom and I am replacing them.I love the Harmon Kardon Speakers II but there is little in the way of subwoofer control. However, I have had those speakers for twice as long and they still sound great and I dont have any technical issues with them either. I recommend those over these.

I have been a musician for over 15 years now and I can honestly say that these speakers deliver crystal clear sound. JBL did an awesome job here I can make out all the different notes, bass drums, bass guitars, electric guitars, background vocals, and all the little layers within the various genres of music. To give you some perspective, I have studio quality speakers that give you a true sound (so you can properly mix) and have used BOSE headphones for years (to hear all the little details you can only hear with headphones).I can honestly say that these little speakers are outstanding and sound much more expensive than they are. A great value considering the sound and under 100 dollar price. My only complaint is that the sub is pretty larg considering the sats but that is a minor gripe. I was able to fit this nicely behind a flat screen monitor on a decently sized desk. From a sound perpective, these sound best when played at a lower volume in comparison with your system's settings. In other words it is best to use your soundcard to control the level of out put to get the best sound. I suspect those giving negative reviews don't have thier systems properly configured and turn the speakers way up. This always gives you a terrible sound as speakers will feedback when the volume knob is turned all the way up to "11". There is a reason why musicians have certain preferred settings on equipment that give them the sound they are looking for.If you are looking for a speaker set to DJ at a party, look elsewhere. If instead you are looking for a set to fill a room with crystal clear sound at the right levels, then look no further. These speakers sound way better than they are priced; just make sure your settings are right so you can enjoy the crystal clear sound these little guys offer.

I am a student who loves music. I don't study it, I don't work in it, I just enjoy it. Thus, when I purchased these speakers, I was only looking to enhance the sound I already get from my music players. I know good quality music from bad, but I can't knowledgeably speak about the technical side of music. That being said, I was looking for volume, decent bass, and an overall worthwhile sound experience. After talking to more technically knowledgable friends, hearing their speakers, researching on the internet, and restricting by a tight budget, I finally decided on these speakers. For the most part, I am very pleased.Out of the box, I loved them. Great shape, great weight, and they don't take up almost any space on the desk. The bass is just the right amount of kick, and the treble is very crisp. The volume is spot-on; I like my music LOUD and I've only dared to turn these up all the way a few times--even then, it was during the middle of the day when I doubted my neighbors were home.My only critique is this funny white noise. I'm not sure how to describe it, exactly, other than to call it a fuzz (other times, a higher-pitched hum) on top of some of my songs. I never noticed it in these songs before I used these speakers. It's either because of some poor quality aspect of the speakers, or because the speakers are so good that I'm just noticing the poor quality of some of the songs.Since not all the songs sound that way, I'm inclined (in my humble opinion) to think it's poor quality in some of the songs.I think I figured that all my music would just automatically sound like it was excellent quality if I had excellent speakers, but that is apparently not the case. All in all, I love these speakers for every purpose: from watching a DVD on my laptop to jamming out to music at a busy party on a Saturday night.I would say that if you're seeking something beyond that, buy more high-end speakers. But if you're like me and just looking for musical enhancement and not something more serious, these speakers will perfectly fit your desk, budget, and needs :)

UPDATED --- I had to re-review this product after listening for 100+ hours with various types of music... now 5/5!+++ This is perhaps the most mobile set of 2.1 speakers out there; very very light weight, the box is reusable for traveling/repackaging around, especially since I have to go to many places and I *WANT* decent sound wherever I go+++ Overall aesthetically pleasing with a very small form factor (goes with the light weight and good traveling) for the sound it puts out+ Sound *is* a small positive, given the small form factor+ Very, Very easy to set up- Bass is lacking, without a doubt; even turning up the bass knob all the way up just makes it sound all muddyPointers: you have to spread these speakers far from each other, at least 6 feet apart physically, to get decently "opened" sound; it is night and day if you put them a 20"/23" monitor's distance apart versus 8 feet apart (this does almost max out the cord length). These speakers are suited towards ***soundtracks / classical / orchestrated music***; Classic/Alternative/Rock such as Val Halen, Lost Prophets, and Rise Against sound ehh, but the Gears of War 3, Transformers, Braveheart, and The Sims 3 soundtracks are much better.I got 'em for $68 on a Gold Box deal... Don't pay more than that, as the value per performance/ease of use/form factor would not be there anymore.UPDATE --- 8-22-12 ---The concept of "breaking speakers in" was originally inconsequential to me, but now, after listening for 100+ hours (easily) for about a year, I JUST had to update this review ... After "such break in," it sounds much, MUCH better now. Everything from Dragonforce and Carly Rae Jepsen, to Daft Punk's Tron and a wide variety of trance, sounds THAT much better now. Yes, bass is "lacking" for those who really want some oomph, but for $65 (now), the portability, ease of setup, and overall sound to price (performance/cost ratio) is easily a 5/5. I am comparing these to my old Z-2300s (which are great for movies and delivered what I needed for ~100 at the time); for ~35 less, the JBL's lesser performance comparatively is negated by the aforementioned aspects. If you're on the move like me (TDYs, PCSs, etc) and want above average sound for ~65, these ARE the way to go.

I've bought two of these. I figured the first one was just a lemon and liked the sound so much decided to buy a second. Well, both are chronically dysfunctional. By chronically I mean that sometimes they work and then, inexplicably, they stop working. If I turn them off or change the plugs, that's when things typically go wrong. Just now, for instance, I tried pulling and reinserting connections because one of the two little speaker stopped working. Now the whole system won't work. I'll leave it plugged in and maybe a day or two or a week or two or even a month or two from now they will work again. So that's what you're getting: great sound, utterly cheap, unreliable technology. Add to that disinterested customer support. Take your chances. Most seem to be luckier than me. But know that buying these is a serious risk.

After 5 years of hard work, my Creature I system died. One of the satellite speakers lost its foam -- rotted away, as others have noted. I auditioned a bunch of other systems, from $50 to $300 (Bose), but wasn't quite happy with any of them. So I rolled the dice on the Creature III, sight unseen (and sound unheard).I was nervous by their greatly decreased weight compared with my old system (others have mentioned this, too), but it turns out I had nothing to worry about. The bass kicks just fine (esp. when the subwoofer volume's increased a bit) and the satellites are plenty crisp, too (esp. when the highs are boosted). Yes, the whole system sounds considerably different from the old one, but after a day I'm already used to it.My guess is that JBL slightly lowered the crossover point and increased the diaphragm size of the satellite to pick up the extra mids required. This also allowed them to lower the overall power rating (subs take draw a ton more power than tweeters) without any noticeable loss of volume -- at least not to me.At well under $100 the price was right, too! So far, so good.

I am actually reviewing the original JBL Creature 1, but thought I would post it here since this seems to be the most recent iteration of this product. I bought the original Creature speakers back in 2003, and have used them extensively, and on a daily basis, ever since then. I use it to blast House music, I hook it up to my PS3/Xbox 360 when I play video games and crank it up to hear all the booms and explosions, and I also use it when I'm watching movies on my TV. All in all, I have used these speakers at least 4-5 hours every single day since the day I bought them in 2003, and they have been with me through 7 moves over the years. Not only have they performed extremely well, but it is only now, more than 9 years after I first bought them, that I am starting to hear some light distortion in the right satellite speaker, and even then it is very barely audible.Basically what I am trying to say is that I love the hell out of these speakers, and I highly recommend them to anyone who is looking for a cheap audio solution. The treble is crsip, the bass is strong, and they will last you a HELL of a long time. I am about to replace them after 9 years, during which time they have given me absolutely zero problems. And you know what? You best believe my replacement will be a JBL product.

SO I got these speakers as a gift when I was believe it or not 14 years old. For those of you who are wondering that was 9 years ago. I first got them to hook up to a small tv when I got my first xbox my freshman year of high school. Since them I have used them for 3 different laptops and 2 desktop computers and they have out lived all of them. The sound is fantastic for its size and honestly maybe I got lucky but they seem to have aged very well and the sound has gotten better as they wore in. My only complaint so far is that the touch controlls for the volume on the satallite are a little touchy and dont always work. After nine years I finnaly Broke that right speaker while moving and I've enjoyed the system so much I just bought a replacement so I could keep it.

These speakers sound awesome. I can't give them 5 stars though because the low end is very weak. I am a multimedia producer which includes lots of audio production and these just don't cut it. Bass drops are almost inaudible because the sound is below the frequency that these speakers can handle. I really like the speakers but just can't use them to EQ my bass sounds. For the price and sound quality, you get a great desktop speaker system...PS: these speakers sound wicked when hooked up to my TV and PS3

I bought these to sit under my monitor on a dual screen setup. The speakers are just tall enough to slide beneath the monitor easily. They are clear, and having bass is pretty cool now. I used to own creature 1s, and these aren't much different. the creature 1s used to have a trrs plug, but now have a ps/2 connector. (i think). The controls work the same as they used to, and the sound is really good. Nice long cables to do what you need. There aren't lights on the satellites anymore, thank god, but the power switch is still on the subwoofer, which has always been a bad spot for me. The power plug is a bit touchy on my set, but is reliable so long as i don't have to get behind my computer and fiddle around. All in all, I'm very happy.

For the price, I thought this would be a nice gift for my sister on her birthday, she's pretty young but listens to a lot of music so I thought I would get it for her especially because its a product from harman audio. Well, she loved it and listens to music on it all the time. So I thought I would give it a few tests using my music, and I listen to a large variety of music from R&B to Hip-Hop to Rock and some classical, and I also consider myself somewhat of an audiophile. So after listening to it for a while, I knew that this system would not be for me because its basically just not the sound quality I want. And I know they're just computer speakers and sound nice when sitting in front of them but when turning them up a bit and listening to them from halfway in the bedroom they're not as clear as I thought they would be. So in conclusion, these speakers are pretty well built, look nice, and come from a well respected company, therefore, they're nice as a gift. But if ur an audiophile, I would recommend looking at something else in a higher price range.I personally have a 2.1 speaker system that consists of a harman kardon stereo receiver and harman kardon 2.1 speakers with a powered subwoofer that should cost about 900 dollars in my bedroom but I got for about 400 dollars. So if you want something clear and powerful for a bedroom, go for a similar system and look for good deals!

I have JBL Creature III for some months already and I can honestly write my opinion about them.Certainly - design is cool. Amazing shapes as for speakers. Then size and power - unbelievable! I had though already experienced something like this with Creative iTrigue 3330 - also small, but very powerful.I am though disappointed with JBL sensitivity for all disturbances. BT mouse use, screen saver in background makes static noises like hoover on pitch. My BF just cannot stand it as it irritates his ears. I checked all cables, connections - everything is fine. New drivers installed - no change. I asked service about it. They refer to electrostatic disturbances. Well... Where shall I put computer speakers if not by computer? Or where shall I use mouse if not by computer? If it will continue, I leave those, even if they got most compact design.

The sound quality is great as expected. The only thing I'm not a fan of is the volume control. On the older version, you could just tap the + and - to change the volume or mute it. Now you have to press and hold as if it's a button (it's not, it doesn't depress). It tends to slide across my desk this way which gets old after a while.

I bought these speakers to use in my classroom for showing filmclips from the laptop. Initially they were ok for a DVD but anything that was streamed could not be heard. After about 6 uses the volume randomly goes up and down when watching a DVD so it is impossible to hear. I paid about $97 for them...Overpriced, useless and a waste of money. I hoep to return them for a different set.
