I got this printer for free with a new computer. It replaced an old Canon BJC-2100 which still works. At first I liked the improved printing quality and speed, but after 15 months of using it my printer became useless. The ink level was full, but it printed blank pages. The test page only printed cyan. I searched the internet and was surprised that this was a common problem. I decided not to buy more ink and waste my money.I will never buy another Epson printer.

As all the others said, if it works its an OK printer. I purchased mine in January 2005. It failed in JUly after (guess what) replacing the black cartridge. I got a free replacement which failed today after 1 year when I replaced the ink cartridge. This printer is designed to work with one set of cartridges and then it fails. If you plan on buying a new printer instead of cartridges goahead. If you want to keep your printer for a while: DON'T BUY THIS UNIT!!!!!

This is the second Epson printer that I've had and the second time I've been unhappy. However, the printer often has trouble with just basic printing. The paper doesn't feed right or gets jammed, picture paper and CDs must be placed just right or they are completely messed up (the CD tray stopped it's auto-load after 3 prints.)It sounds great to have the multiple cartridge option, and in practice it *almost* works well - I only replace what I need. However, if you don't have the color you need and you run out, beware that the software prevents you from printing in straight black. Instead of a print, you get constant "buy ink now" messages.I will not buy Epson again.

I researched this carefully before buying. I heard good things from salesmen and on CNET and Epinions. My 8 year old HP had finally gasped its last and I needed a replacement. Although it was only 300dpi my photo prints were really great. The Epson should have been a big improvement. It is not. I really hate this printer. The photo printing is just fair. The ink cartridges are miniscule and the printer warns you when you replace with a generic substitute. It will let you print, but not happily. When the LED display vanished Epson reluctantly replaced the printer with a refurbrished one. This one prints no bettter than the first. It is worse. The pages do not feed well and paper jams are constant. A letter may print clearly but is not square on the page. I am now replacing it with a Konica Minolta laser printer and a HP dedicated photo printer. Epson was very firm about not replacing the printer more than one time, and that was clearly offered as a BIG favor. Initially they told me I had to take it to a repair service. Their closest repair service is about 70 miles away (one way)in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I could also elect to go to Indianapolis, about twice as far. Epson was not plesant to deal with. I will certainly NEVER buy another Epson.

My Epson Stylus 900 finally gave up the ghost after 5+ years of heavy use and faithful service. When i set out to replace it, i was a bit dismayed to find that dedicated photo printers are a dying breed. Bringing home an AIO seemed like a compromise -- until i plugged in the RX620 and started using it.First, i made a couple of 4X6 prints directly from a compact-flash card. I was blown away by the ease of operation and the quality of the prints: You'd need a magnifying glass to detect ANY evidence that these prints came off an inkjet! Then, just for fun, i made a couple of color photocopies. Even on plain paper they were clear as a bell and the color fidelity was superb. Next, i printed a Word document, again on plain paper. The text was crisp, even at 4 points. It was pretty speedy, too (I didn't time it, but it was definitely faster than my Stylus 900). Finally, i scanned an old negative. This took a bit of experimentation, but once i figured it out i was again very impressed by the quality of the image. In retrospect, i don't know how i ever got by without this machine! It offers a ton of features without compromising image quality (in fact, i'd say this is the sharpest printer i've seen yet!). The full-color LCD screen makes it a snap to use and the controls are very intuitive. The interface with my Canon digital camera and iMac is absolutely seamless. And although this printer's basic operations are very easy to master, i've been very impressed by its advanced and custom settings, too. The color management is particularly good (gone finally are the days of having a print come out with a weird cast!).In short, the RX620 is packed with features and offers superb image quality at a very affordable price. Even if you just want a printer and think you don't need all the features it offers, i recommend purchasing this model. Even as a standalone printer, it's an excellent value and is well worth the price.

I bought this printer and it printed great (good graphics, crisp text) until it started running low on ink. And then everything other reviewers mentioned happened. I bought new and expensive Epson ink (directly from Epson) and it stopped printing. Only blank pages printed, heads would not clean, etc. The warranty obviously expired and tech support was useless simply telling me I needed to clean the heads which the printer would not do. The few service centers Epson seems to have are no where near me and I am not wasting more money on this. After reading the other reviews and finding out this is not an isolated case (but rather common) I'm not only fustrated with my printer but angry at Epson and certainly not buying from them again.

Epson R200 was my 2nd choice but a couple reviews here flag my concerns: the cartridge ink consumption, and as I experienced with an older Stylus model - the ink spraying/splattering all over the inside causing eventual printer demise. People are fed up with printer manufacturers having cartridges with sponges that don't refill well (Lexmark), or smart chips that prevent refills (Epson), not to mention HP's methods including "Expired Cartridge" messages, etc. If we don't, as consumers, vote "no" by not buying these printers and sending letters to CEO's we'll just get more of the same scamming. I was excited to read about Canon Pixma IP3000 & up models with separate ink-tanks & no smart chips. Examining all the Pixma models at a local store I noticed this extra pull down tray in the front-middle. After going home to look online, talking to Canon tech support and the local store meantime checking on it...it's a disabled/never will work CD/DVD printing bay. Yet the same models in Europe have a working CD/DVD print bay. Why did Canon USA leave the drop down tray there, only plugging the CD/DVD entry slot with an extra piece of plastic if it can never be functional or upgraded anyway? The USA price does not reflect the non-functional CD/DVD printing either. So I will (doubtedly) try to get a Euro model or wait for Canon to release USA models that are fully functional. I may end up temporarly buying the Epson R200 but I feel like I should be ashamed supporting Epson and their smart-chip scam. There is a chip resetter device for Epson cartridges(avg. $10 to $15) but I don't know if it works well yet. Forget Lexmark unless you have money to burn on cartridges. And there's concern about Epson printers wasting/spraying ink all over the inside (read all R200 reviews) that soon causes problems (dries solid/hard). The Canon has ink tanks with no smart chips, look easily refillable, and their print head underneath the ink tanks holder is also removable (i.e. replacable, but I don't know what that will cost. If other printers' print heads go you pretty much resort to trashing the printer). I believe some Canon models use up ink by frequently running it's own cleaning cycles but don't know if that applies to Pixma line also. If they are tanks that refill well than that is probably okay. It looks like the Pixma line is leading the way in printing and cartridge technology. Canon: Kudos for heading a little more environmetally responsible with the Pixmas obviously designed for long-term usage in mind but PLEASE get those CD/DVD printing trays functional soon!

I have owned two C82 printers and folks have owned two C84 printers (two of each because one of each failed during the warranty period.) Know that every 18 months or so Epson releases a new model number of the same printer, and has historically failed to address the issues of the previous version. Search the web for "clogged nozzles" and "C82 and C84" and you'll find a lot of info from users with problems (you may not find such feedback YET on the C86 because the model number is relatively new and not enough time has elapsed to allow the printheads, etc to clog up. If past experience is any indicator, it'll only be a matter of time until you experience the same issues. As one of the previous reviewers mentioned, after a while of use, the printheads, etc clog and none of the routine diagnostics and remedies work. You are left with the option of either sending the item to a service center, or buying a new printer (if out of warranty.) Since repair costs exceed the cost of a new unit (after rebates), it is generally not worth the cost of repair. Seiko/Epson customer service won't stand behind the product after the warranty has lapsed and are very quick to point out the customer is on their own or has to foot the bill for a repair. For those of you interested in a disposable printer (which works great for the first year or first few cartridge changes) the print quality is very good. Though the printer is VERY thirsty (it goes through a lot of ink quickly), the cost of printing per page is reported to be among the lowest going.I suggest owners who want this short-term operational printer, I suggest you consider purchasing some extra inks (so as not to run dry unexpectedly soon.)Unfortunately, Epson quality is no longer what it was in the 80s and 90s (it WAS the gold standard.) I may look to go back to HP to replace mine (which will be going to dump this weekend.)Don't let the low initial purchase price fool you...this item uses the Gilette razor approach: the base item is very cheap, but the refills are where the company makes their living.Bottom line, it's a DISPOSABLE PRINTER and is not worth the frustration.

I am just one of many burned C86 owners. I have used Epson printers for 20 years. This is my last one. Like everyone else reviewing here, it just-stopped-printing when I changed cartridges one day. Out of warranty by 2 months, so Epson says I'm out of luck, would I like to buy a new printer?!!!!. So now I am down one printer AND the price of an entire set of ink cartridges. GOODBYE EPSON!

You would think a company like Epson would take a hint from what happened to the American auto industry when they made cars to last only until their warrenty ran out. They suddenly had to deal with people who would only trust Honda and Toyota. Most still do. With Epson it is Canon that has given consumers back the confidence that Epson lost. They have improved their low end printers AND dropped the price. Here are the cons on this ESPON machine... 1. Fails suddenly and completely...warning signs include frequent head cleaning (which BTW can use up a third of your black ink in a heartbeat). When mine failed it started printing grey scale pictures in GREEN. I reloaded the CYAN ink because it was low and then it would print only in YELLOW. Go figure! 2. It runs through ink like crazy and often refuses to print when the ink is low. You have to replace cartriges that can still pass the "shake" test. 3. Ink costs about $65 dollars a set, which is about what I paid for the printer on sale. Epson obviously did this on purpose to make even more money off a cheaply made product. In the end I was paying more per month to feed ink to my Epson then gas to my car, even at $2.60 a gallon. Pros: 1. As stated it works really well for a few months of light duty. 2. Its pretty. 3. Best of all, the USB cord and the power cord from this unit don't go bad and can be plugged directly into the back of your new CANON PIXMA series photo printer. Gee, how cool of them to anticipate my purchase decision. The USB cord is the only thing the EPSON has that the CANON doesn't. All kidding aside. This is a cheap peice of trash. Don't even think about buying it and don't touch it used.

Bought it, was happy with it, and within 9 months the black ink stopped working, even with NEW cartridges. Check Google, because this problem appears to be fairly common with this printer. Then shortly after we lost the red ink. Then the yellow. At this point, the printer only prints in blue. And that's starting to get bad. We've tried a number of tricks to clean the printer, including one techies suggestion of using a drop of windex to disolve any "dried ink" and printing gobs of test pages.Nothing.Not happy at all.

The Epson Stylus C86 is an ideal personal desktop printer that can produce outstanding photographic prints when used with care.I needed a personal printer to sit beside my computer that could handle moderate volume. I still use the networked office printer down the hall for occasional bulk jobs, but the Stylus C86 is perfect for most day-to-day work. Ordinary text printing is fast and sharp. I've used it with perforated postcard sheets very successfully, and the 'fine' setting produces truly excellent typographic resolution.Printing high quality digital photos on any printer is a skill that takes a good deal of practice, and the nature of the output depends as much on details of the input file as it does on the quality of the printer. With carefully prepared CMYK digital images, and good photo paper such as Epson's Enhanced Matte paper (a must for quality work), I've been able to produce amazing digital prints with the Stylus C86. Co-workers couldn't believe they had been output from an inexpensive desktop printer.Epson recommends the DuraBrite inks with this printer, and that is what I use. There's no doubt they are expensive, and the cost of replacement cartridges is a drawback of all inkjet printers. The claimed advantage of these specific inks is that they are pigment based and so do not fade as dye-based inks do. I haven't done a thorough test of this, but there is no question that the inks are more durable than the dye-based inks used in an older Canon printer I had: prints from that machine would be noticeably faded after only a few months. It is hardly worth making digital photo prints at all if the colors won't last, and the DuraBrite inks used in the Stylus C86 are certainly superior to many others. Further, the cartridges are individually replaceable so if you use a lot of cyan (say), you can replace only the cyan cartridge without having to discard the remaining yellow and magenta. The software that comes with the printer is adequate (if inelegant), and it lets you check the amount of ink remaining in each color and clean the print nozzles when needed. It's important not to judge this printer by the wrong standards. It isn't meant to be a rugged, high-volume, multi-user office printer. It's a personal printer that will perform very well for an individual user, and it can produce stunning photo prints with good paper and a good input file. Are there more durable, heavy-duty printers available? Of course. They cost much more. Are there printers that will produce commercial-quality photo prints quickly and in high volume? Of course. They cost much more, too. It is the combination of both quality and price that make the Epson Stylus C86 a truly remarkable personal printer. I use mine every day.

This is the poorest consumer product I have ever wasted my money on. Every aspect of printing with this machne and of Epson's so-called "support" has caused me more frustration than anything else I have ever owned. The photo quality is mediocre. Finally, 5 weeks after I bought it, a paper misfeed destroyed it and now I am happily (except for the hundreds of dollars wasted on it and the ink) tossing it into the garbage. Never again Epson.

First of all, it is impossible to print with only black ink, in effect wasting all your colored ink and giving all black and white prints a nasty green tone. Secondly, yes, it is an ink hog. It says you are out of ink, when really you are not. For example, I just opened the lid to change my yellow ink, and when I closed it I was suddenly "out of" light magenta. I hadn't even printed anything. It won't let you do ANYTHING on it when it's out of ink either. IT'S HORRIBLE. Also it is incompatible with some programs on my computer (Illustrator 10). It is overall a frustrating expensive ink whore.Another thing, my roommate has an Epson and it broke for no reason after a year, the same happened to her boyfriend's Epson. I read another online review of this printer that says after owning it a year the owner has to do a head clean every 4 pages.Don't make the same mistake I did!!! Get an HP or something else, anything!

I did alot of research before selecting this printer to purchase. I have been very satisfied with my choice! A couple of reasons I chose this Epson is that I can print any size photo (unlike the PictureMate) and I can edit, crop, adjust and print all without a computer. I have printed around 100 4x6 photos and a few 8x10's and 5x7's and, while my ink is getting low, it has not run out yet. I use it mainly for scrapbooking. My parents are professional photographers and have been actively involved the up & comings in the industry for almost 30 years now and they, too, were very impressed at the quality of image (espicially for an 8x10) that this little printer produced. They have always used and trusted Epson products (they use a VERY large Epson to print some of their smaller studio work). I highly recommend this, as well as other Epson products.

I had the same problem with the C84 of colors not printing after replacement with new Epson cartridges. No way can nozzles go from functioning to totally clogged and not cleanable just by changing cartridges, particularly all four. Experimenting, I eliminated both the cartridges and the nozzles as the source of the problem. Of course Epson tried to convince me otherwise, and made the same C88 offer. My strong suspicion, backed up by experiences reported on another web site forum, is that the problem is a design flaw in the C84 docking system which causes it to clog and or malfunction over a period of time that seems to exceed the one-year warranty... conveniently for Epson! Of course, the DuraBrite inks could be a contributor... I have used an Epson 870 with dye inks for 5.5 years without this kind of problem. For 4"X6", I have replaced the C84 with a Samsung SPP-2040 printer without nozzles and no liquid inks, and am very pleased with the quality of the prints... as well as happy that I won't have to deal with drying and clogging.

I received this printer free after rebate almost a year ago. After reading earlier reviews of this printer I was somewhat surprised! I've been using my epson c86 for almost a year now and use it on a daily basis. I have never had the problems that previous users seem to be having with clogged ink heads. In fact, I haven't had one probem since day one. It prints fast, high quality printouts. I will agree that this printer goes through ink quite quickly, much more so than any other epson printer I've used in the past. This is why I only gave it a 4 star rating and not a 5. But I do not use the highly expensive epson ink catridges so it doesn't bother me too much. I've been using generic ink catridges ever since my first genuine epson set that came with the printer ran out. I can find a set of 2 black and 1 of each color on ebay for MUCH, MUCH cheaper! My last set came shipped to my door (5 cartridges) for less than $20 which is about the price you pay for 1 catridge. To sum it up, I've been using this printer daily for the past year with generic ink catridges and have had no problems. It's still producing great printouts and I'm still happy with it, especially since it was free. Overall good printer! Would recommend!

I see several posts from people who have stopped using their C86 because it broke. CALL THEIR TECH SUPPORT; it's worth the price of the long distance call. I bought mine on 12/9/04 and it has stopped printing yellow 4 times, so I'm actually using the 3rd replacement they sent me. Each time it is broken for the first year they will send you a new one, with 4 new ink cartridges. They even pay the shipping to return the old one (and you don't have to return the old ink carts). And they are quick; the last replacement arrived the day after I called about the problem. Most of the bad reviews I read were for problems that I have not had with any of my 4 printers, so I suspect that those customers have actual lemons. (Bad paper feeding, for example. One reason I like Epsons is how well they feed paper!! You can feed the same piece of paper through multiple times and the text will just get darker because it feeds exactly perfectly every time...if the text blurs, you need to run the alignment utility. Another example: lines across photos -- also fixable with alignment or head cleaning.) If the utilities don't fix it, you will probably get a replacement.I would like to know if anybody out there has figured out how to prevent or fix the problem with the yellow ink clogging. Their head cleaning routine doesn't work in this case, when the yellow stops working completely, suddenly. When my warranty expires I won't be able to get replacement printers. Epson's tech support says that cleaning the print heads with cleaning solution will make the problem worse, but I hope somebody knows a trick.

Maybe I have just been unlucky ...But the C86 I bought in August worked for about a week before the magenta and yellow (Epson brand) cartridges or print heads stopped printing. Tried all the usual head cleaning and aligning but eventually returned it to Epson who sent me a new one. This one is not much better and now, a few days later, the yellow cartridge has again stopped working properly.Epson's real-time on-line technical support talked me through cleaning and aligning the print heads (which I already knew and had tried many times). Cleaning the print heads uses up ink like you can't imagine, so I have now worked my way through two sets of new cartridges (?60 worth), as well as the original set, mostly just to keep the thing working at all. No possibility of printing photos or high resolution graphics: banding always appears in the yellow so everything has purple stripes. It prints black text (at least at the moment) and I can use it to get an idea of the layout of my pages - but, as I work as a graphic designer, this is pretty hopeless.Just as well I have my trusty old Epson 1520 as a backup. I particularly chose the C86 because it has two printer ports and I have two computers to connect to it. I have used many Epsons over the years and have always been happy with them, but I cannot say anything pleasant about the C86 except that it looks nice.

I almost didn't get one of these due to the bad reviews, but with the office depot deal, I figured it was worth trying for $20 after rebate. It was easy to install, and from the very first printout I have been astounded. The scan quality is absolutely remarkable, 1000 times better than the CX4600 I just threw out. Although I'm sure the ink costs will be high, I'm still amazed that you can scan in a 4'x6" picture, then blow it up to letter size and it loses no apparent resolution at all. I haven't tried the print from negatives feature yet. For the guy with the USB cable issue, I think all the printer manufacturers conspired with the stores to do this make you buy a 99cent cable for $15 while you are there buying the printer. Seemsed like a major gip, but just keep the cable from your old printer. BTW You really can buy them at those 'dollar' store places.
