Sure, the quality of the prints are great and the ability to print onto CDs/DVDs is awesome - *IF* you can get the printer to feed the CD/DVD tray or good quality paper. I purchased this printer about 8 months ago and it started acting up after the first few months... now it's a giant, frustrating paperweight - Sitting on my desk, mocking me.It's not like I don't feed it plenty (and I mean PLENTY) of ink whenever it's hungry.Ungrateful little printer...

I've owned this printer for about 3 years. I was so impressed with the quality of the photo prints that I had to have it! I always clean and align the heads before I use it. You really can only use Epson photo paper with it. I tried an off brand and what a mess! The ink just laid on top of the paper! I only print photos with it so it may be months between uses. The ink is too expensive to print documents and it really does a pretty crappy job on them. You definitely have to replace the black ink cartridge when it gets low or you get ugly black images in the dark areas of your photos. Luckily, Epson shows you where the ink levels are. I am currently looking at 12" wide printers and Epson will be my printer of choice. We use our Epson C80 for our document printing and love it as well. We've had that one forever! We never have to clean the heads on it!

But not without "some" effort.The problem was the printer driver that came on the CD appears to not to work with Mac OS 10.4.x.Calling Epson for help is difficult, there's a lot of button pushing involved and it seems like you must answer unnecessary questions endlessly before you actually get help. I think they would save time if they "just helped you" even though that might result in helping people who had the product more than 12 months. (A plus for Epson, the support person I "finally" spoke to was in the United States.)As a Mac user, you probably only want two pieces of software from Epson. The printer driver (check their web site to see that you have the latest one), and EPSON Print CD. EPSON Print CD Is a decent program that will allow you to print to a CD or DVD, (you must use printable CDs / DVDs). Other companies also make a similar program at a fairly low cost.Some people have a habit of throwing away the install software and just downloading everything "fresh" from a company's Web site. Don't do that with the Epson R340, for some reason the EPSON Print CD program is not available for download!The approach that worked for me was to install the latest driver from the Epson Web site and then use the install CD to install the EPSON Print CD program.If you register this product, be sure to indicate that your using a Macintosh.A good point for Epson, the printer is made in the Philippines NOT Communist China.Printer 5 StarsSoftware 3 StarsSupport 1 Star

The C84 seemed like such a great deal. Only $[...] and the photo print quality is quite good--at first. But then you soon discover that the print quality declines quickly, so that you constantly have to run cleaning cycles--over and over and over--to keep the print heads from clogging. The cleaning cycles suck up your ink--and the ink ain't cheap. You quickly spend several times the printer price on ink, most of which doesn't ever end up on a printed page but is blown on cleaning cycles!Epson Dura Brite inks are the culprit. They dry very fast and very hard, which is great for photo prints in theory except that the fast and hard drying makes this printer extremely susceptible to head clogging.Eventually, more likely sooner than later, one day when you replace an ink cartridge, the printer will start printing blank or nearly blank pages. So you run cleaning cycles, which necessitates the purchase of a whole new set of ink cartridges. But this time the problem doesn't clear up. So you've just spent $[...]for ink cartridges for a printer that no longer prints. Of course, that same $[...]that was just wasted on ink cartridges would have gone a long way toward buying a whole new printer.My advice: Never buy an Epson printer that uses Dura Brite inks. And if you do already own an Epson C84, once it develops a serious clogging problem, don't waste your cash on a new set of cartridges. Just throw the thing away. In fact, even if your C84 is still printing okay, the next time it runs out of ink, instead of plopping down more good money for new ink cartridges, take that cash and invest it in a better printer, one that doesn't gobble ink like the C84. You'll end up money ahead.

PICTURE QUALITY IS VERY GOOD, THE ONLY CON IS THAT IT HAS TO GO THROUGH A DOG AND PONY SHOW OF SOUNDS AND CLICKING WHEN YOU FIRST TURN IT ON, BEFORE IT IS READY TO PRINT.

THE WORST PRINTER EVER!... and I don't say that lightly. It was nice until it became time to change the ink... then it printed out nothing but blurry lines, if that... no matter how many times I cleaned the print heads. I wish we could sue these people and get our money back.I WILL NEVER EVER BUY ANOTHER EPSON PRODUCT IF I LIVE TO BE 100!To make matters worse.. their "support line" is a TOLL call, and after you wait 5-10 mins on hold, you're told that the call will cost you NINE DOLLARS!Hey Espon.. if you people read this, just know that any time a conversation on printers comes up, I will do everything in my power to stear people away from your product. Not only are your printers shoddy, but the fact that you won't provide free tech support for them says PLENTY about what kind of company Epson is.... GREEDY!

My mother and I got this printer for free when it came with our computer in 2002. The printing results were excellent, but after a while, print setting had to be put on best to keep print quality at its sharpest to prevent white horizontal banding. Prices for ink were okay, but whenever a cartridge ran out, we would have to wait a matter of weeks before buying a new cartridge, as the machine could not print with an empty ink cartridge. Then, starting earlier this year, the printer would cut out immediately before starting a print job, and a box on the screen would say this: "Delete all print jobs and turn the printer off. Remove any foreign objects from inside printer". (Or whatever else it said). Whenever this problem happened, the ink light would flash and the paper light would stay solidly lit (or vice versa). To fix the problem, I would have to uninstall and reinstall the printer and its hardware. But, when the problem was fixed, it would come back almost immediately. It was a reliable printer for quite a while, but it just retired out on us after four years. It is now sitting on a top shelf in a closet. We now have a Lexmark Z611.

I must admit I didn't read the fine print closely enough and was a bit disappointed to learn you have to use special CDRs in order for this Epson to print an image on CD. I'm sure this is the case for any similar printer, I just didn't realize.So, beyond that I have been quite happy with this printer. When using Ultra Premium Glossy photopaper, the output is much better than I expected. You can see some horizontal banding if you look closely enough, but from more than a few inches away from a printed photo and it looks like it came from an actual camera.The current Windows drivers for the printer do a decent job at providing multiple useful print options. The LCD display screen is vivid and placed right up front. The menuing system on the printer itself is fairly intuitive and easy to use, enabling you to print photos directly from a memory card without using your computer with minimal hassle. All in all I'm happy with my purchase.We also did a bit of research before buying a new printer and found that, on the average, ink refill cartriges are cheaper for this model Epson than most comparable models from other brands.I've only had it a short time so cannot yet comment on the longevity of the printer, or how well it self-maintains and self-cleans over time. Seems like every inkjet style printer I've had doesn't last long before incurable printer smear problems develop and render it useless. So far I have had no such problems with this one and hope it will stay that way a good while!

I might give it a 5 stars for the cost vs utility but this printer is a total waste of ink; if you have a habit of turning off the printer after printing (like myself), every time you turn this printer (or any photo printer from EPSON) on it will recharge the ink or in more understandable term it will perform a small version of head cleaning, with or without the real need :(What does this recharging cost?? Approximately anywhere between 5% to 10% of the ink every time, in other words you need to buy ink cartridges little faster then actually required but again this is where printer manufactures make most of the money now a days and EPSON is no different then others.On the flip side this is Energy Star compliant printer and use only 3W if you leave it on standby mode thus save you from recharging the ink all the time.About quality of the prints and DVD/CD printing option; this printer will meet or exceed any standards of any comparable product in the market. Period.6 color printing is bringing real detail with true colors and having 6 different cartridges is a plus for buying ink.With my experience I found that printing speed; mentioned in description; is nothing but a load of BULL, or may be they are talking about draft printing speed and very conveniently forgot to mention the word "Draft" while writing the specification about printing speed. :)If you are one of those "hotwire guys" who "refill" their ink and print like news paper press, you might need to buy a set of clear view cartridges so you can see how much ink you are putting in along with a EPOSN cartridge chip reset gadget to reset the counter or be ready to say bye bye to low cost ink and start buying ink cartridges. "Continues Ink Systems" or CIS are also available in the market for this printer. I myself use one of those and life is good

I have used all the major brands on the market and have found the Epson RX620 the best unit overall. It does a great job of scanning to include old slides and neg. film scans. Some of the slides have come out better than the scans I got back from a professional lab, that's impressive. Printing is some of the best results I have had with photo printers as it uses 6 independent color cartridges allowing you to be able to replace only the ones needing replacement. Some of the other reviews complain of the printer using too much of the color cartridges ink or requiring replacement before being empty. All I can say about that is the manual makes it clear that all cartridges pass ink thru during printing so clogging won't happen if not used for long periods and the remarks of needing to replace the cartridges before it is completely empty is wrong as it also is clearly stated in the manual and on the message that appears on the screen that the cartridge is only 20% remaining as a reminder that you need to purchase replacements before too long.It offers so much in useful software tools as well and all tools are easy to use and depending on your level of experience it will adjust to your knowledge and proficiency. Some dealers and even Epson's website have been offering big rebates/discounts making this one sweet deal.

The original purchase referb was a dud and did not work at all! Epson sent a replacement, and it seems to work OK, but have not done any scanning yet. This is my husband's printer, so I have had just a little experience with it.

We bought 8 Epson C86 printers because the color reproduction was highly rated.It does print decent color photos--while it still works. We had 1 at home and 7 for our office, all with light to medium usage and mostly in black and white. Each printer, on cue, failed within a year and a half, by first printing poorly, by not improving through cleaning or cartridge replacement and then by not printing at all. It sounds like it's printing, but no ink is transferred to paper. To fix these would cost as much as a new one. This is NOT a good value--they ALL break quickly....

After 1 and 1/2 years it failed to print. Same problem as many others had. Called Epson. Warranty expired and nothing can be done except send me new cartridges (which of course I had just bought). Stay far away from Epson products. They have planned obsolescence down to a science.

I have to admit, when I read most of these reviews, it scared me away from this printer. I found it on Ebay for 30 dollars and once seeing everything here, it almost seemed like it was not worth it.Well, I decided to go ahead and try it out regardless of the reviews and take my chances. The only thing the printer didn't come with were the ink cartridges, but I was able to buy both the color and black on for only 7 dollars online (CHEAP, yeah I know!, plus you can get six of each for 30 dollars...that's like ONE ink cartridge for the BIG brands!) So once I got the cartridges, I had to test it out. It had a little problem at first, the ink wasn't doing as it was suppose to do, so I had to clean the head unit, but...Honestly...it wasn't as much as people here act like it was. It's just like any other printer if you were to clean the nozzles.Second, after doing it twice, everything came out great. I decided to try my first pictures to see just how good this sucker was...it took about 2 minutes for it to print a 4x6..but once that came out of it, it was astonishing!! WOW, now that is a printer! You can't even tell I printed that next to other ones that I got from Shutterfly! I could not believe it, it was remarkable.I've used this for a week now, and I haven't had to clean the nozzles again. Everyone is worried about the warm up when you first start it on...it's not that long, at max about 20-50 seconds, but I always turn it on right when I come to the computer, otherwise it is off. I haven't experienced the drying up of nozzles either, but I am really enjoying this printer.The only reason why I didn't give it five stars is because I did have to run the clean nozzle when I installed a new cartridge. I've never had to do that with my lexmark printer, but it worked out beautifully. :)

While it never broke, it has been retired. I was sick of its appetite for ink.It has never printed a pic worth a damn. Slower than Moses.I ran out the last ink carts on DVDs, but i always, always had to prime the old ink pump or else some color cart would be clogged and ruin the print job.I suppose if it were used every_single_day, it would be someone's cup of tea, just not mine.

This printer produces wonderful photo prints and does a great job with printable CDs, too. Here are the negatives:1. VERY expensive inks. As is the case with most inkjets, Epson expects to make its money with ink cartridge sales. I began using a local "refill" service to save some money and have not noticed any degredation in performance or quality. Well, at least not yet.2. You do get warned about low ink long before the ink runs out. This results in ignoring the warnings, and that results in some bad printing...putting everything back right to where you started! The irony is irresistable.3. Using the CD print tray is slow and awkward.All that said, you won't be disappointed with this printer. Knock wood, I've had it for two years and it's running fine...

I have had my Epson Stylus C86 since Feb. 2005. (About 2 years) However, suddenly it refuses to print. All the printer does is spit out blank sheets of white paper with no black text. After replacing ink cartridges and spending a lot of money, I am going to switch. I do not recommend buying this printer unless you like products that don't last a long time.

I have owned and loved Epson printers for over 10 years. They have all printed amazingly well, on anything I asked them and held up extremely well, except for my last one, the C86 which died after 13 months. However the R340 is an enormous disappointment. It no longer prints well on many types of stock that the other Epsons did - including certain types of coated stock or photo paper. Epson obviously wants to sell its own brand of paper, and is making printers that only accept that. The most annoying aspect is that as a graphic designer, I need to print accurate color screen-to-printer matches and multiple copies. The color matching is atrocious and the paper feed is so inconsistent that each copy is aligned slightly differently, causing enormous frustration and wasted time (and materials!) realigning layouts and re-printing. This is especially true if you are printing address labels, postcards, anything but regular 8 1/2 x11 bond paper. It also blotches ink across the edges of anything but bond paper. I would not reccommend this printer.

I print out maybe 10 pages a month and in the year or so that I've owned this printer, I've already changed the printer cartridge twice. Since cartridges are expensive it's not worth my while to continue using this printer. It also has this awful habit of printing out every other line when the ink cartridge is running low. It's so frustrating because the print quality is quite good when it does work. But such a high-maintenance printer causes nothing but headaches in the long run.

I had the R220 and it was better then the 340. With the 340 the CD/DVD tray sticks. If I don't push it in myself it will get stuck and give me an error. Don't buy this printer.

I stuck with Epson because I really liked my old reliable Stylus Color 400....but I have some issues with this printer!Yes - this printer can print a remarkable photo!But - as many have pointed out here - it requires consistent cleaning of the print heads.What does this mean? Well - two main issues:1 - You never know exactly when during the printing of pictures that your prints will suck.2 - Cleaning the print heads wastes ink - so you will be constantly buying more.Yes - there is a print pattern you can run to check to see if the heads need cleaning - but even if this checks out - you can still run into quality issues during an 8x10 print or the printing of many 4x6s.I wish I could recommend this printer - but due to this issue - I cannot. At the first sign of any major trouble - I am burying it and I guess will try another major manufacturer like HP.

DO NOT BUY THIS PRINTER! I used the printer (brand new) for exactly 6 weeks, then it became worthless. At first, I was impressed by the high print quality, the ease of the software interface. Then after we changed the cartridge the first time(we printed a lot of stuff the first three weeks), it's been blurry, smeary print. For draft quality stuff, who cares, but note: YOU CANNOT PRINT A HIGH QUALITY DOCUMENT! Even on the best settings, there is sporadic bleeding. Not all inkjets are like this: the Canon and HP inkjets I had before did not do this, except at the end of one or two years. And sure, they had other problems. I am going to throw this one away and buy an HP laser printer, now that they are low priced enough. This one really turned me off to ever giving any inkjet another try.

Bought this to replace my old Color Stylus 800. Thought it had died after 6-7 years and lots of mileage. As luck would have it, it woke from the dead after a last ditch 12th head cleaning. So I got to compare (bottom).I had been shopping around for a good photo/everything printer. After reading reviews across the webscape, it looked like Epson was still a lock in terms of image quality. There may be faster, and cheaper, and even prettier (form factor), but I just wanted the best looking prints. I looked at the R800. It consistently got the highest marks, but $400 seemed little too much for my needs. Next down the line was the R320, which looked like the one.Funny thing happened on the way to the check out counter. I found the R220 sitting on the sale pile. Compared to the R320, it has virtually the same guts, minus a lot of bells and whistles (LCD screen and direct SD card reader for instant photo prints). I really just needed a printer, no more, no less. So, less than a Benjamin later, I have the R220.As expected, photo quality between the R220 and my old 800 is not even close. Using Epson Glossy Photo Paper, the 800's prints have noticeable dithering (tiny dots) everywhere, while the R220's prints are really indistinguishable from a regular 35mm photo (as long as your image is hi-res). Granted, there's 7-8 years of technology time between them. Even for light grays and off-white, areas where I would expect to see dithering, they were naked to my 20/20 eyes.So buy this if: you know your way around Photoshop and understand about resolutions and imaging and just need a basic printer that will give you the highest quality prints from your computer, no muss, no fuss. Not completely perfect, but rock solid for $100! CD printing is a bonus, but I'll probably use that, what, like two times?
