I would give this printer a zero rating if I could. Up to this point I have been a big fan of Epson for at home ink jet printing. My previous printer was an Epson Sylus CX5400 which I loved. I can't even remember the model of my first Epson. Here are the reasons I may never buy an Epson again:1. At first the six separate cartridges (five color and a b&w) looked like a good idea. Why throw away a cartridge that is only low on one color? Well, when you figure in that each individual color cartridge cost $12 (that's $60 for all five color cartridges) and the fact that this printer eats ink like none I've ever seen before, it gets pretty expensive.2. When one of the cartridges runs out, the printer shuts down and you can't print anything until you replace that cartridge. So if I run out of cyan, I can't even print a black and white document. Even if my printer runs out of a color that I'm using it should still print (giving up a little quality obviously).3. The cartridges for this printer come with a chip on them, which means if you're using a non-Epson cartridge, the printer will not operate until you put an Epson cartridge in. So you're forced to buy the ridiculously priced cartridges from Epson as opposed to a more reasonably priced "compatible" cartridge.I've tried printing a few photos from this printer and was somewhat disappointed. Simply put, the pictures looked like they were printed from an ink jet printer (dark and grainy). This printer actually drove me to online photo printing services. For $0.12 to $0.19 a print, the quality is far superior, and by the time you factor in the cost of your ink jet printer, ink, and photo paper, it's probably cheaper per picture.

We own both the C84 and C86 (they share the same cartridges). They've both died and I don't think I'll let my supply of cartridges influence my next purchase. As others have pointed out, these are fine until they break, which is early.Epson needs a new Chinese supplier for these $400 plastic printers.

I paid probably $50 for my Epson C84 printer and used it MAYBE 3 months with light print jobs. I ran out of ink. Replaced the ink. Thank goodness I didn't pay full price because now the heads are clogged (after repeated head cleanings and running through the ink even faster), and I'm still getting blank pages. I'll be doing my homework and checking reviews thoroughy before I buy my next printer. But I'll NEVER buy anything from Epson again. I've read the reviews here and it appears just about everyone has experienced the same problems. I don't know if anyone from Epson reads these reviews, but they need a reality check. Lose customers, lose your business, period. This printer is a pure piece of trash. Congratulations Epson, you've made yourself into an incompetant manufaturer. Never again!

I received an R300 for Christmas a couple of years ago. Initially the print-quality was excellent and I was extremely happy with the results. However, it wasn't long before the problems occurred- clogged ink heads for the colors which weren't used regularly, and eventually even poor text output from clogged ink heads for the black, which was used often. The only options that were available to me was to service my printer, costing me as much money as the printer originally cost- or to try to clean it myself. Unfortunately Epson has absolutely horrible customer service, and the most outrageous thing I learned was that they do not even sell the cleaning solution to the public- you HAD to get it serviced for $$$ if you wanted to continue printing with this piece of junk which continually clogs with ink before sucking the cartridges dry from head-cleanings.I am now finally replacing this defective excuse for a printer with a Canon model (Pixma iP6700D). I can't really imagine the Canon being any worse than this one, and expect it to be much better. In a couple of years I'll let you know how the Canon has worked for me.

It's not only the product that is defective, but the whole attitude of Epson company that is upsetting to me. I don't have a problem with defective products as long as the company stands behind it. Companies make defective products from time to time, that happens, even a reputable company get into that trouble. The bigger problem is how Epson responded to it. They didn't only try to keep the problem secret but even lie that the problem doesn't exist. I wish I had read all the comments in the review before I bought two packs of color cartridges. If I knew it, I would have bought another printer probably another brand. I think I should feel lucky, mine had lasted two years unlike other people saying a year to year and half. Here's the myth Epson want you to believe. "Printer head clogs if you use ink cartridges anything other than Epson" The truth is even you use nothing but Epson genuine cartridges, it still clogs. I have used only Epson genuine ink cartridges. First thing I did was sending Email to Epson. The rep. sent me a reply explaining how to clean and nozzle check which I had already tried several time. Naturally, that was my response in next Email. Their reply to that was, to send the printer to authorized repair shop and have them take a look. Having other printers before, I knew where this was going. Meanwhile, I searched the web looked for the reviews and if other people had the similar problem. Boy, did I ever. At this point, I knew I had a total lemon. Looking back now, I also saw that the Epson reps. answered my Email must have been aware of this but just were playing dumb. I sent another Email with address of this review site. They said nothing about the review just sent me a phone number to call. First time I called, they connected me to the tech support. I explained the problem then she told me that they were aware of the problem C84 had, and that they can't do anything about it. She also told me I should talk to customer service, so I did. The person I talked to in customer service, he must have gotten hundreds of the same calls and played very calmly. From the tone of the voice, he seemed to know everything and how to respond as told by the company. First he denied that C84 has a problem. Then I told him of the other user's complaints on the web and asked if he wanted the address. He turned down my offer, saying he doesn't need to see it. Then in no time, he started saying "If you are not happy with the printer, I'll make you an offer. Current model C88 we are selling at $80.- on Epson store, I can give it to you for $69.99 and......." Does this make sense to anybody? Denying everything about the defective product and all, why he need to make an offer? I couldn't believe there's an Epson CEO who gets paid millions of dollars to make such a cheap policy and a customer service rep. who gets paid to lie. I had enough of it and turned down the offer. Yes, I told him that I'll post my negative review against C84 all over the net. What I suggested Epson was to post a message regarding C84 problem in Epson web site so other people won't have to waste money on future cartridges purchase, not surprisingly that was denied. So the next best thing I can do is to let people know in other place of the net. I don't recommend not only this particular printer but purchasing all Epson brand products. I previously had two other Epson printers and had been a loyal customer for a long time, not any more.

This is an absolute piece of junk. Do not buy. I usually have high tolerances for non-perfect equipment but this is going way too far.My biggest complaint? YOU CAN'T DO ANYTHING WITHOUT ALL INKS BEING AVAILABLE! This doesn't sound bad initially since its a printer and all but realize this means you can't print in B&W only if you're out of color. You can't print only in blues if the red is out. You can't do anything.Once even one of the ink cartridges are out, you basically do not have a printer anymore. Even the damn scanner/copier won't work without color cartridges. Its the dumbest feature ever.

(Update. Sept 30, 2007): Almost 3 years old, it's been a real workhorse printing DVDs, and I still rate it a 5-star printer. It did recently have a clogged nozzle. My fault. I read inkjets work best when exercised regularly -- print at least one page a week -- but the printer sat idle for about a month while I was on an extended roadtrip. Upon my return, black did not print. Status Monitor indicated more than 1/2 tank of black, but the Nozzle Check pattern printed all colors except black. So, for the first time ever, I ran the Head Cleaner. (You don't want to do this unless ABSOLUTELY necessary because it uses up a LOT of ink from all 6 tanks. You cannot select just one color.) Still no black ink flowing. This site has the best information I was able to find about how to clear a clogged Epson printer nozzle:http://www.inkjetreview.ca/Articles/clogged_epson_nozzles.htm.The first suggestion listed -- putting distilled water on the printhead sponges -- is what worked for me.By the way, except for the tanks that came with R200, I never used Epson ink, and the printer ran just fine. Unfortunately, apparently the newer Epson inkjets use only Epson ink. The difference is that a complete set of generic R200 inks cost about as much as a single tank of Epson ink. So, I sure hope this R200 lives for at least another 3 years. Here's my original review: Excellent printer. I purchased it only for the CD/DVD printing feature. However, I decided it'll also replace my Epson Stylus Photo 870 which, after 4 years of heavy use, continues to produce excellent results even with off-brand ink. By comparison, the R200 print quality is even better. Here's some info that might be useful if you're about to buy the R200, or are still shopping:It takes about 3 minutes to print 100% of the disk surface. Printing less, like one line of text on the top half of the disk, and one line of text on the bottom half - and no background graphic - takes about 1.5 minutes. If you do a price check on a complete set of Epson brand ink cartridges for this printer, you'll see the cost is more than half the price of the printer. But, each color ink has a separate cartridge - so only the color that runs out has to be replaced, not the whole set.The R200 does not include a USB cable, so you'll need to either buy a cable or use a spare if you have one. It's important to read the section in the manual about printing disks before you try to print your first one. The steps are simple, but if you don't select the right settings for Printer Setup, the printhead might miss part of the disk.I read some reviews here and at other sites which mentioned having problems using this printer with a Mac. So far I've printed on disks using both Epson Print CD and another CD printing app called Discus, and printed to letter-sized paper from programs including Word, Exel, Photoshop, QuarkXPress, TextEdit, Mail, and printed web pages without a single problem. If you prefer to use Photoshop, Illustrator, or similar programs to create original designs, no problem. Both Epson Print CD and Discus import graphics files.I've seen some comments on how quiet this printer is. It is very quiet printing, but it does make noticeable noise when it starts the job, especially when pulling in a sheet of paper to print. So, it's not totally quiet. The R200 is the same as the R300 as far as quality and speed; it just lacks some extra features the R300 has that, in my case, I didn't think were worth the extra cost.(Update) I'll add that I'm a wedding videographer, and print about 15 - 20 dvds plus dvd case covers, a week. I've lost count of exactly how many I've done with this printer, but I can say after 3 years the disk feeder tray and the whole unit still works perfectly.(Update) I read one review here about a problem printing shipping labels. After connecting online with their sites, I regularly print both USPS Priority Mail and UPS shipping labels with the R200, and it's quick.[Update) I have replaced the original ink cartridges several times already, but, because I'm using this printer for all my printing, it's difficult to estimate the average ink cost per disk -- maybe $.30 at most. I can state the R200 is by no means an ink hog. The Epson Photo 870, which this replaced, seemed to use (evaporate?) ink even when idle. Not so with this R200. Considering everything my R200 has printed so far, it was well worth the purchase price. If this machine ever decides to die, I'll definitely replace it with another Epson.(Update) Well, altho I've had very good luck with this printer, I'm not sure about replacing it with with another Epson, because supposedly the new ones work ONLY with Epson ink. That would increase my printing costs 5-fold. I've read Canon inkjets are better, but none print directly on disks.

I have had this all in one printer/scanner/copier for about 18 months now and am very pleased with it, indeed. The Scanner is just so much easier to use than my previous scanner (which was a standalone Hewlett Packard) and does not have the constant niggles that beset this standalone scanner that went before it.Print quality is excellent particularly on photos. Be aware though that this printer is very paper sensitive on photos and will give crap results on thicker photo paper such as double sided sheets. I find that using lightweight glossy photo paper achieves the opposite and gives superb results. The net result of which is do not use heavy photo paper in this unit. The LCD display screen which gives you the menu of all the unit's various functions is very bright and clear. What's more it is really easy to use too, and it is a breeze to scroll up and down between various functions. As for space, yes it is a large unit but does it take up as much space as a standalone printer and a standalone scanner? No it does not and accordingly has freed up some much needed space on my PC workstation.

Ink is expensive and is used up quickly. If you go a few weeks without printing the inkjets dry up and you have to run a series of maintenance tasks to get it to print properly, however when you run these tasks it uses half the ink. I've now gone a couple of months without printing and now it doesn't print at all. Thinking the ink cartridge was damaged like a fool went out and forked out another 35 bucks just to be convinced the jets are dried up beyond repair. Ran the cleaning and aligning tasks and my new cartridge is now half empty and still not printing. Piece of junk. Was nice when I first got though but once you start changing the cartridges it goes down hill from there. Does not print in glossy. Nice and quiet which I also like in a printer. Ugly round shape.

My R200 worked great, but the printer door snapped off after several moves, and I had a lot of Epson compatible ink cartridges, so I bought the R220. I liked the R200 and used it a lot to print color sales material and to print CD labels, and had it for several years. It could have been a little faster as far as I was concerned, but it accepted the Epson-lookalike cartridges and did a great job so I was happy. This newer version of the CD-printing Epson is much faster, still accepts the Epson-lookalike cartridges, and it is quieter and seems to work more smoothly than the previous model. The photo printing function is excellent. You will produce beautiful full color photos quickly and easily. The CD-printing function only will make sense for you if you use it infrequently. Sitting there and hand-inserting CD after CD will send you to the funny farm, so don't feel that this machine will meet your needs if your needs are for 30-50 cds a day. No one is that patient. But in fairness, I don't think you can expect a $100+ machine to mass-print CDs for you, and I don't think the manufacturer intended it for that purpose. If you are looking for a reliable attractive color inkjet printer that's fast and quiet, you will be very pleased with the Epson R220.

I bought this printer, despite a number of negative reviews. My test results confirm my suspicions: Most negative reviews are written by photographer/printer wannabes or simpletons who expect to get a thousand dollar printer/scanner/copier for under two hundred dollars.MY BACKGROUND: I am a nationally-awarded photographer twice nominated for the Pulitzer Prize. I have been a pro for three decadess satisfying the most critical demands of graphic artists, designers and other clients. And I build my own computers. [...] I ran a series of initial tests, using my own images, without making any Advanced adjustments to the machine or reading the Owner's Manual. And got excellent prints with fine color and sharpness. I then downloaded a Printer's Test image (8X10" at 200dpi) and printed it at the printer's "Best Photo" setting. Sharpness was great and color was only about 5% over in magenta... easily corrected in Adobe Photoshop. I then scanned that print and the results were equally impressive. Sharpness was perfect and, once again, the scanned image was over about 5% in magenta. I should remind folks that a 5% disparity of any color renditions could easily be caused by an un-calibrated monitor or printer. MY monitor is a brand new LCD,un-calibrated. And text printed beautifully and fast no matter what type of paper I used. I then copied the test print and found the copy to be just fine. Copies will usually lose 10% of sharpness so that was factored into my conclusion. Finally I tried scanning a film negative and had very little trouble get good results.MY OPINION: One would have to go a long way to find a better multi-function machine for under two hundred dollars. The Epson RX620 should satisfy most all photographers in all respects. Period. With all due respect to those who have logged objections to this machine, I would suggest you do more studying on printers AND photography OR simply quit expecting a two hundred dollar machine to perform like a thousand dollar unit.Thank you.......

This printer will not only "nickel and dime" you to death, it will make you wish you were dead -- or worse.I got this printer with my new Macintosh computer, and for the first three months life was great. The pictures were beautiful, text printing was flawless, and the print speed is fantastic. However, after I had to buy new print cartridges, it all went downhill from there. New print cartridges never work right away, you have to "prime" the printer with a crapload of ink in order for it to print halfway decent. This printer is designed to clean its own nozzles by using ink. However, apparently from some serious flaw in the design (either of the ink or the printer, or both) the printer consumes at least one third (maybe one half) of the ink in any cartridge just cleaning its nozzles.Typical scenario:The printer's software utility program (the "Status Monitor) indicates that I am running low on ink. I look at the fancy graphics that tell me how much ink I have, and I see a little test-tube-looking thing (for each color) that shows I have just a tiny bit of ink left. So, I use up what remains (only a couple of pages) and go to the store and fork over SIXTY BUCKS for all the new print cartridges. (And yes, if JUST ONE color is low, the printer will not operate. You have to replace them all). Then, I go home and install them in my printer. After this, I look at the "Status Monitor" and find, happily, that those test-tube-looking things are now just teeming over with ink. "Alright!" I stupidly think to myself, "I am ready to print!"So, I print. And the output looks awful. It is all choppy and full of white lines. I call Epson. They say I need to run the utility program to clean the nozzles. I do so. I print again. It still sucks. I call Epson again. They say I need to clean the nozzles again (which will use up more ink). I do so. I try to print again. It still sucks. But Epson says I need to just keep doing this OVER AND OVER AGAIN, and the printer will eventually print just fine. So, I keep doing it. And every time I do it, I check the "Status Monitor" and can clearly see that the test-tube-looking things show I AM RUNNING OUT OF INK -- FAST!!So, I cry. But this doesn't help either. The only option is to use up a ton of ink on getting the printer ready to print, print my hundred pages, and then go back and pay sixty more dollars for more cartridges. Also, I have had no luck using refurbished print cartridges. They suck too. When I use them I find I have to use EVEN MORE ink to get this piece of crap to function. So, if you like to waste a lot of time and money, then I highly recommend this printer. It is absolutely fabulous for your needs. However, if you are looking for a reliable printer that will print fairly well and not cost you too much in ink, then I'd say to stay away from the C84. If you buy this, untold horrors await you.

I've been using the R220 for over a year now. Print quality is excellent in all modes, CD, photo and everyday printing. However, after about 6 months I found that the CD tray needs a small push to enter the machine properly; every time. Now, thicker photo paper will not feed without a "little push"! So yes, print quality is excellent, but after a little more than a year seems this printer will be ready for the "bone yard" very soon. I'll keep nursing it as long as I can because I have a lot of spare ink laying around, but if don't need direct CD printing (I do) maybe there are more reliable options out there. I'm sort of dissappointed with Epson on this one and if I didn't need direct CD/DVD printing I would certainly explore other options.

I owned HPs for years, and then someone told me that HP's quality had gone down and that Epson was the way to go. I'd always sworn I'd avoid Epsons because they seem to have lines through the print images -- but I went on faith.Bad idea. This is the worst printer I've ever had. I can't print text without lines through it. Doesn't matter how many times I clean the nozzles, and it doesn't matter if they're new ink cartridges. Since this is my everyday printer (and I'm a writer), that's a big problem for me.If you print a color photo at highest quality with good Epson paper, you'll get a really nice image, but image and photo printing are your goal, you're better off with a dedicated photo printer. (I have an Epson R200 that I'm happy with -- it cost me the same amount as this printer and does a nicer job with photos.)If I ask the printer to treat my text documents like high-quality photos, I get better text, but someone else said it extremely well -- as a result, they guzzle ink like SUVs guzzle gas, and the cartridges do dry out quickly.I haven't owned an HP in years, so I can't make any recommendations there. I can only warn you against buying this printer, and suggest the R200 or a comparable Epson if you're looking for a photo printer. Good luck!

Why it's so impossible to find a decent, non disposable printer these days is beyond me. I thought an Epson would be the answer to my HP printer nightmare prayers--but it so isn't.-Prints really dark and only after some serious settings adjustments, about two rounds of ink cartridges and a pack of expensive Epson photo paper later are my prints now acceptable.-Completely proprietary--don't even think about buying generic, non-Epson photo paper or your results will be grainy, and just not even presentable.-If even one of the ink tanks run out, you're out of a printer and even the scanner until you replace because it simply will not function (an Error screen overrides the menu on the unit and will not go away) until you do (really nice when ink selling stores are closed).-I have mine on the bottom shelf of my computer desk and to load paper is very difficult--I can't just lean over and slide some in, but rather have to get on my hands and knees with a flaslight to very delicatly find the narrow slot and hope that I didn't just put it on top of the page protector instead.-I've only used the negative scanning feature once, but of course it was lame also--I even tried making some adjustments through the software--better of taking negatives to a professional photo service in person.

Before I start, I just want to emphasize that I have been in the IT industry for about 15 years and consider myself to be pretty knowledgeable about PC and PC peripherals. This DOESNT mean that I'm infallible, just simply that I know what to look for in a device. Now onto the review...It was time to replace my tired HP Photosmart 7260, although still working and doing a great job, I may add, I wanted something, well.... different. So, I decided to delve into the AIO(All In One) category. I initally started with an open box HP 2355 from Sears and was initally pleased as punch. Decent print speeds, wonderful photo and text output and an awe-inspiring design. However my happiness was short-lived. Apparently there was a reason it was an "open box" and priced so cheap. It was defective. Continuous banding, horrible color output after sitting a few hours, etc. So, much to my dismay I took it back and decided to stick with my PS 7260 until I could afford a high-end AIO. Well the time came to purchase and I shopped around, read numerous reviews and finally picked up an Epson AIO cx6600. For those of you who havent tried this printer, its MORE than worth the money!!! Excellent speed, nice look and good print quality. All out of a 4 ink tank system! However, I just could not settle with this device(Nothing really wrong with this AIO except that I could not settle for the 4 color pigmanet-based print engine) and decided to return the 6600 in favor of the 6 color, dye-based RX620. I'm glad I did. Heres why:1.) Print speeds seem to be on par with the cx6600 (Which has decently high ratings for speed).2.) Photo quality is among the best I have EVER seen. This AIO is on par with the high dollar, 8 color dedicated photo printers. With Epson Premium Glossy Photo Paper and a high-resolution image(i.e 4-5 MP high-end camera), you almost have to have a microscope to detect ANY dithering or banding. I have printed everything from 4x6 prints up to 8.5x11 and continue to be blown away by the quality. And I have a VERY keen eye for imperfections!!!3.) Contrary to some reviews, text DOES appear sharp and crisp. Print speeds arent super-fast, but will suffice for most applications.4.) Copy and scan quality are among the best Ive seen from an AIO. This is probably attributed to the excellent print engine and over the top scanner. I copied an older film photo on the photo setting(NOT best photo) and could not believe my eyes. The printer has the ability to restore old photos and I'm here to tell you...IT WORKS!! An adapter is included to scan negatives and slides as well, which I have not had a chance to play with as of yet.5.) Setup and operation are a breeze! Even printing sans computer could not be easier. The full-color LCD is very informative and easy to use!6.) Bonus features! You can even scan directly to a memory card, or backup to a Jump Drive/CD-RW directly connected to the printer!!7.) Its relatively quiet! Much quieter than most of the HP's that I have used.Everyone complains about the lack of a fax, but I do NOT see this as a fault! It is designed to be a home-based photo center. You CAN scan to fax with the included software, however and I found it to work as advertised.CONS:All in all, I have a hard time finding faults in this AIO and I'm REALLY looking. But there are a few irritations(Not really faults)1.) The USB cable is attached to the machine from INSIDE the lid. You have to raise the lid to install the cable, which is fed to the back via a path notched out. Kind of crazy, but not a big problem.2.) Epson thought it to be a good idea to put a product sticker on the top, which almost covers the entire lid. This includes the shiny black oval/oblong area that gives the RX620 a handsome look. When the sticker is removed, residue is left on the shiny part and is ridiculously difficult to remove. Solvents that are effective in removing the residue, cause swirl marks on the surface. Again an irritation, but does not take away from the operation.

I bought the R340 to print CDs and DVDs only. If the disc loads correctly, the printer does a magnificent job, but as several other useres have noted, getting it to load is an arduous undertaking. The trick for proper loading is this: after you send the CD/DVD print file to the printer, the feed mechanism will push the tray back out about a quarter of an inch. You must quickly push it back in by hand, before the feeder grabs the tray again, or it will misfeed every time and generate an error condition. With a little practice, you get so that it will feed correctly maybe half the time.A friend of mine has an R320 and he reports the same exact problem with his printer. Even though we both know what to do, it still misfeeds frequently. I'm sure Epson engineers could fix the internal software if they wanted to, but with no competetion in the CD/DVD printer market, there's no incentive to make it work right.Another problem: the printer software allows disk image to be "whitened" on the computer screen so that the picture can be aligned with the disc's printable surface boundries. Whiting is there only as a visual aid to to the user, but if he forgets to turn the whiting off before printing, the image will be printed on the disc so light that it's almost invisible! (If this happens to you, just turn the whiting OFF, push the carrier tray back in, and print the disk again. The darker image will directly overlay the lighter one, but you must be VERY CAREFUL NOT TO MOVE THE DISC in between.) Again, this minor bug could be easily fixed in the software by automatically turning the whiting OFF any time the PRINT command is received, but Epson simply doesn't care if it works right or not.All-in-all, I reluctantly put up with this printer's quirky behavior because when it finally DOES work right, the results are beautifully printed DVDs and CDs. There's a real opportunity here for another manufacturer to offer a CD/DVD printer that really does the job RIGHT, and steal the market away from an unresponsive Epson.

I bought my first C84 brand new several years ago for about $50.. so don't even think about paying 200 here! I don't remember were I got it though. In any event, it died after about a year of infrequent use... yeah, the quality was great when it worked, but the color print heads got jammed or something and it refused to print color. I sold it, and bought a used one for $10 bucks, and it died within the month. Very low quality. I strongly discourage anyone from buying this printer. And that's not to mention the fact that ink replacements cost as much as a new printer!

I learned my lesson after my third and final printer. This printers are noisy, huge and offer the worst quality of materials. It the printer detects you are running out of ink it will not let you print anymore. You will get an annoying message saying you are our of cyan and will not let you print any documents at all. Not even low res black and white.Any other brand will give you more for your money. Many people have help me with their reviews and I dream of saving any of you an ultra bad experience.
