You buy used and you take your chances. The item broke down almost immediately after purchase. The vendor was willing to replace it, but I decided additional shipping charges and another used unit were not worth the risk. I bought a new printer instead.

The main reason I used to justify the cost (to myself and my wife) for buying the 3880 was the ink cost. The ink cartriges are 8 times the size for 3 times the cost of the R1900 ink. I really like my Epson R1900 printer and still have it, but it is now religated to back-up and DVD/CD printing. But the cost and low amount of ink in each cartridge was killing me.The 3880 was a lot bigger and heavier than I expected. I kidded myself reading the specs that it was only a little bigger than the R1900. It's not, it's a lot bigger.Set up was easy. I love that it is a true network printer, so that the information is bi-direction even from a wireless computer. The prints are spectacular. I used Eye-One to calibrate my monitor (on my Mac Pro with 2 24" cinema displays) and the prints are as close to my monitor as I have ever had before. The advanced B&W mode is also spectacular. Finally perfect B&W prints. As of now, I've had the printer about a month. I've printed 40 17x22 full color (non-white background) posters. 70 8x10 B&W. 20 8x10 color and about another 20 smaller prints and just replaced the Vivid Magenta and Yellow. Most of the rest of the ink cartriges still have plenty of ink left. YAY!After I ordered the printer Amazon started (daily, for a few days) offering me extra ink for the 3880 in my "gold box". As it turns out, Epson has two different K3 inks for Vivid Magenta and Light Magenta for the 3880 vs 3800 (all the other K3 inks are the same for both printers). Amazon offered me the wrong ones and since I didn't know that yet, I ordered them. They gave me a refund. T580A00 and T580B00 are the correct Magenta ones for the 3880. Even the Epson manual for the 3880 has it wrong in one of two places. I guess they just copied the 3800 manual and missed a few things. Amazon said they fixed it in their catalog, I haven't heard back from Epson yet. So be careful ordering extra ink.A few things have gone wrong. I've had a few paper misfeeds, more than one sheet fed at a time. Thsi happened on my R1900 some times too mainly with Ultra Premium Matte. So watch for that. I've also had a driver problem. When I started printing the 17x22 posters, 10 at a time, 3 different posters. It seems that the driver got confused and half way through printing the first 10, it started using the settings from the second 10. I canceled all the jobs and did one poster at a time (e.g. 10 at a time) and everything was fine.Another small problem. I have lots of 13x19 paper left over from the R1900. The 13x19 is not a native size for the 3880, so I had to make a "custom size". I tried several things, but still haven't been able to print a 13x19 borderless.I'm also having problems with some of the function of the remote monitor program. Some of those functions don't find the printer on the network. But these problems are minor and I'm sure will be fixed in software someday. Don't let that stop you from getting this wonderful printer.Oh yeah, don't panic when you install the maintenance cartridge at initial setup, as it immediately goes to 73% available. That is normal. This is one of the best printers I have ever owned. Everyone who has seen the prints from them is convinced that they are professionally done. And I guess that is true, since this is from Epsons professional line.

I've used Epson printers for over twenty years and have always thought they are the best printers (once purchased a Hewlett Packard and couldn't return it fast enough). Then I bought the Epson Workforce 520 and am extremely disappointed. It's a terrible machine, won't fax unless I hold and feed through each piece of paper and the cancel button doesn't ever do anything for any reason. So, I took pause when it came to purchasing a wide format desk top printer and was concerned that Epson just wasn't the same Epson I'd come to know and love. After much studying I decided to give it a try and ordered the 3880 printer, refurbished. It's very cool and works like a charm. The only thing I really don't like about it is that, after printing some very big photos (6) and noticing that the ink cartridges were a third gone already, the ink cartridges are over fifty dollars apiece and there are nine of them. I was able to find some knockoffs made in China for a fraction of the price but I don't know if the color will hold like Epson colors. I'll see. Oh and I also discovered that it's somewhere around seventy-five dollars to buy 25 sheets of 17x22 paper so I won't be test printing much. I'll have to run it once for proofing and then hopefully just one more time for the final photo. The luster paper is beautiful and I highly recommend it but altogether, paper and ink, one can't just be a Sunday photographer and print nature in large format unless one has the money for it. So the printer is a very good printer, colors are excellent, and it's fast even when it's not set for a fast print. It does take a while for the black cartridges to change when printing text and back to photos but I just decided to use my old Epson for text printing and have them both hooked up and that works better.

Bought this printer back in October. The few pictures we have printed are amazing, but I am already low on light cyan.I don't think I should be low on light cyan or even close to it at this point. My printing has been minimal, having only printed about 6 or 8 8x10's and a few 4x6's.I have switched back and forth a couple of times to print some regular pages on plain paper.but mostly I use my Laser printer for routine printing and have left it on photo black for the past 3 months. How is it that printing a few photographs uses an entire cartridge of ink? There has to be some mistake. At $32 bucks a cartridge, I can't be spending 3-4 bucks for each photo just on the ink.I think I need to contact Epson about this. Maybe the cartridge was bad or a sensor in the cartridge was bad.Where did all the ink go? It seems impossible to use so much ink for a few things.edit: I went to publish this on Epson's site as well, but it seems to be locking me out. It says my email is invalid. Since I have been using the same email for 16 years, I'm not sure how this is possible.

This printer lasted 8 years of home use, printing photos, CDs/DVDs, holiday cards, labels, and just regular paper stuff. It rarely if ever jammed, the printer utility let me know plenty of time in advance when to order ink. It did not need head cleaning very often, basically it worked great and lasted a long time. I always used genuine Epson inks and never had a problem. My Epson printers have always been quality, this was another example. The photos came out very well and the printer was able to work with art-type paper without a problem.

As a pro I have extremely high quality standards - the R3000 meets those standards and delivers marvelous B&W prints and perfect color prints.Home printing requires a good monitor and good paper profiles from the manufacturer. Profiling your monitor helps immensely with any printer. However, most amateurs aren't going to do that. Epson's paper profiles are good and you should try to adjust your monitor to see the same thing that's on the finished print. Make sure you let the print dry throughly before judging it. A couple of hours or a hairdryer will vastly improve the prints looks.Ink costs about 75 cents for a full bleed 8.5x11 inch print. First rate paper varies from 20 cents to a dollar a sheet. The R3000 is quite efficient in its use of ink compare to earlier Epson printers. However, constantly changing from matte paper to glossy paper and then back to matte will cost you about $4 for each round trip in wasted ink. So, you're better off sticking to one surface or another. Try Epson's "Ultra Premium Presentation Matte" - 20 cents/sheet, archival, nice looking surface. The printer works via either a wi-fi connection or a hard wired USB connection.

UPDATE 27 Sept 2011:I've noticed some reviewers mentioning this cartrifge will not fit/work with their CX5400 printer.I've also noticed a samll app, next to the item on this page, where you can 'verify' if this cartridge fits your printer. This app also shows that it wont't fit. But I don't know why it shows that. These are the orginal ink cartrdiges that came with my CX5400 when I bought it.I've bought this cartridge before in local stores, and had no problem with it.Last time I ordered it here from Amazon, again I had no oproblem with it.That time there were no reviews here mentioning that it would not work with CX5400.That samll silly app, that shows that it won't fit, also was not here.I've just recently ordered this same cartridge. Today my black ink run out, so I replaced it with the cartridge I recently received from Amazon. Again, ... no problems what-so-ever. It fits perfectly, and works/prints fine.********************ORIGINAL REVIEW:Write a review? What's to write? It's ink. Plug it in,.. use it.Quality is good. But I never came upon a particular ink that wasn't.I go a reasonable time on one cartridge, ... about 6 months, more or less.I do a considerable amount of printing.Printing almost daily, several pages,... printing 4 to 15 pages daily,.. some days more, some days less. This is jsut a rough estimate of waht I print. Of course I haven't measured it, nor will I do so. It works for me.Price is the issue for me here. I do find this Epson cartridge ink for quite a higher price in stores then the price listed here. So this seemed like a pretty good deal. On the other hand, I just did a check online, and I see the same cartridge for about the 3rd of the price listed here (that's the only reason I'm rating 4 stars, otherwise it would have been 5 stars). But also some at the much higher price you find in stores. Makes me wonder why there's such a huge difference in price. I'm not sure of those at about a 3rd of the price either. Ah well,... just do a price check before you buy.Again,.... these work well for me,... and o yes,... almost forgot, fact that it's delivered at your door is quite nice. I got my order 8 days after ordering. That's good eneough for me.

I have never been more frustrated with a printer than this Epson R300 Inkjet Printer. It struggles to grab paper and takes about half an hour to finally load one sheet and print. Printing is a nightmare. If I'm on a tight deadline, I'd rather hand-write an essay than waste time waiting hours for the printer to cooperate.

I've hardly used this printer and I can't figure out why my inks look so bad when I print color photos. I had to let it sit for several months but I did take the inks out of the machine and stored them in a sealed plastic bag. I've just spent six hours trying different settings with Photoshop CS-3 and Windows 7.0. I've let Photoshop manage the colors and I've let the printer manage the colors. It makes no difference. My prints are muddy. I THINK this would be a good printer, but I've had no luck trying to get help online. I did download a new driver as suggested. Also, the ink level gauge looks like there is an empty cartridge on the far left, but I can't read what it is by going through the printer window. I'm sorry I can't recommend anything until I can get the printer to work.

I almost felt bad not rating this printer at 5 stars, but it does have a couple small problems that make it less than perfect. First off, it is a remarkable machine that produces superb prints of artwork. All final digital product is, of course, dependent on the filtering and scanning that the intake and digital manipulation software provide, but the quality of printing for line drawings, ink washes, and similar works really impressed me. I have not done a lot with photograph reproduction, but what I have done was also impressive. It is not, however, a perfect machine. The settings process which has to be done per print, or saved as a custom batch setting is cumbersome. The layout is a bit awkward and makes it difficult to remember to go through every setting and tweak it for your particular batch printing job. You can establish your own profiles, but not every setting is included in the profile which means you might still have to tweak the settings for even the minute differences in a batch. As per tech support, the layout options per print are dependent on the software you are using to order the print job. The manual paper feed at the rear of the machine is EXTREMELY sensitive to paper being cocked a little to one side or the other (so sensitive that I truly believe it is imagining things). I am actually completely unable to determine what the problem is in each instance, and simply wiggle the paper a tad in its position, and try again. The output print is pushed hard against the right side of the machine, which is ridiculous considering the amount of space there is to work with. It tends to catch on the sundry little irregularities and joints in the plastic located there when using thin/flimsy paper. Thicker paper seems to glide over it without issue. All in all, I can highly recommend it for quality of output and economy of use (relative use of "economy" here - these are very high quality prints and not dirt cheap), but it is not a 'set it and forget it' producer of batch prints. You do need to stay on it from start to finish. The last and final aggravation is that if you miss setting a paper-type change that requires matte black ink when you've been using photo black ink or vice versa, it undergoes a purge of the system, spilling all the 'other' type of ink into a waste tray. This is better than having to change out ink cartridges, but once it begins there is no way to stop it without shutting down the machine mid process which I'm sure is not recommended. However, if you don't, it will finish purging the one type of ink and then reloading with the other, and will do the whole thing in reverse when you correct your settings. A phenomenal waste of ink. There desperately needs to be an "abort" button to halt all processes in mid stride considering how easily you can miss a setting.

The printer makes excellent quality prints. I have used the Epson 1200 and 2200 printers as well as the hp 9180. I have been making art prints for over 12 years using ink jet printers. The r3000 while making quality prints purges an unacceptable amount of ink just cleaning jets. It goes through an entire cleaning cycle every 5 or 6 8x10 print. I have been keeping track of the number of prints I have made and it looks like I will get approximately 80 prints(8x10) out of the yellow cartridge. The others appear to be using about 1/2 this amount. This comes out to about 3 to 4 dollars for each 8x10. The ink is just being discharged into the bottom of the printer. This ink usage is far greater than I have experienced with any other printer. This will be my last Epson printer.

You'll notice that many of the professional reviews of the Epson 3880 state that it is the "best of class" among 17 inch photo printers. I couldn't agree more.I'll keep my review short and sweet since there's plenty of technical information available online.* Prints from my 3880 exhibit higher image quality than I can obtain from regular photo labs, as well as higher image quality than any prior photo ink jet I've owned. More specifically, the prints have superior highlight and shadow detail; they never have 'muddy' shadows; they show considerably more fine detail; and they have excellent tonal/color accuracy and gradation. I cannot discern any dithering, half tone patterns, banding, or pizza wheel tracks even at the 2nd best setting of 1440 dpi.* This is the first photo ink jet I've used which can produce B&W prints that rival what I'm able to produce in the darkroom. And it does so with ease via the Advanced B&W mode.* The printer design is mature. Setup was a breeze, print head alignment is automatic, and navigating the print dialog is a cinch. Everything feels well built and sturdy. I haven't had the printer long, but while I've had it there have been a few 2-3 week periods where I didn't print a thing, yet I haven't had a single clog. On all past printers I had to waste ink after a 2-3 week gap. Speaking of ink the initial cartridge set is lasting a long time.* Out of the box Epson's profiles work perfectly. I have never had an easier time getting prints to match my calibrated screen.I have only two minor complaints.* I wish the photo and matte black inks did not share a print head channel. The printer holds them both and switches between them automatically, but some ink is lost flushing the channel with each switch. It's not so much ink as to be a big deal. But you do have to think about it and batch your glossy and matte prints to minimize ink loss.* I wish Epson would ship paper 17x26" instead of 17x22". 17x22 works for trimming down to 16x20, but not for 16x24 which is the correct ratio for DSLRs and 35mm. For 16x24 you have to buy roll paper and cut it yourself, or look to 3rd party papers.I have never been this satisfied with a photo ink jet printer. It is truly the best in its class. I highly recommend it.

I normally do not write product reviews but in this case I am compelled due to the enormous flaw that is the black ink switching system. The amount of ink wasted when switching between the two types of black ink is really staggering. I will admit I am partially to blame, as I read reviews stating this prior to my purchase, however I didn't think it would be this bad. I am down to barely a quarter tank on one of the blacks and I have never even used that black to print - the loss is entirely from waste.I understand by troubleshooting that there are workarounds to conserve ink, but they are not always easy to figure out and they are often not a permanent solution. The printer is great otherwise, but it simply is not worth the staggering amount of waste. I strongly regret this purchase.
