It should be noted that this printer will not work if any of the six ink cartridges runs out. I tried everything to get it to print, including cleaning all nozzles, and got nothing. I went to the basement and found my old HP 932C, which had sat unused for AN ENTIRE YEAR, and hooked it up to finish the job I was working on when the Epson threw its fit. The HP printed just fine, no problem. That should tell you everything you need to know.

This is the worst printer I've ever had the misfortune of using. We had a few at work (don't ask me why someone bought them in the first place) until I recently rounded them up and threw them all out. They use so much ink that it's ridiculous, the printer nozzles frequently get plugged up, and the print quality erodes over time. Epson C class printers have become synonymous with JUNK. AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE.

This is a great product for the money. I have had absolutely no problems with clogging. I use aftermarket ink cartridges which have equal quality to the orignal ones and save a lot of money that way. The color is excellent. remember if you are printing photos and want superior quality, you need to use photo paper. It is a sturdy workhorse that beats the competition HP, Lexmark, etc. in durability at the same price point.Epson Stylus C86 Inkjet Printer

I would have given 0 stars, just couldn't figure out how to do that. If you do a google search you will find that this printer will stop printing in black for no reason after a period of time. You will spend a fortune trying to replace cartridges to figure it out, but it will not work. After doing a search I found that this is a common problem. I will not be buying Epson printers again, as this is common in many of the models.

I have a little business where I scan slides and prints and create DVD slideshows and convert VHS home movies to DVD, etc. I needed a printer that could print direct to the DVD/CD so I could get away from applying those annoying labels. I found my R220 online for $70(refurbished), and have been using it for a couple of years with just one problem: the DVD tray has to be "helped" into the printer with just a little pressure or it sometimes mis-feeds. I know this would be a show-stopper for many, but I put up with it because the printer is otherwise so reliable, the ink cheap (I buy compatible cartridges online for an average of $17 for a set of 6, and they work beautifully!), and the paper tray feeds perfectly. I read where other reviewers have had problems with photo and other thicker paper misfeeding, but I have had absolutely no problem. I routinely print on 8x10 glossy photo paper and card stock with never a problem. As for the printer not working with compatible remanufactured cartridges, the only time it's had Epson-brand cartridges was when I first got it, since then it's all been remans.I recently filled an order for 45 DVD's for a customer, and after 2 or 3 printed in a row, I noticed ink streaking a little on the face. I ran the printer head cleaning process, but it still streaked. I finally figured out the ink oversprays a little on the DVD cartridge tray that it sits on, so I just started cleaning it every other DVD with a clorox wipe, and ended up with perfect labels for the rest of the run. I also printed a custom 8x10 DVD case insert for each one, and I still have ink remaining after all that. I do agree with those reviewers who have complained about the actual print colors not matching the screen, but that's never been an issue for me since most of my printing is DVD/CD labels that I customize for each client.I hope this little jewel keeps on going, and when it does finally break down, I will probably try to find another online.

I bought this printer in approximately 2004. At the time I was simply a college student looking for a reliable printer to churn out papers, homework assignments, and maybe a few photos of my friends and I relaxing on the weekends. I'd had Epsons before and liked them. I also needed a printer that would work with Linux with few hassles. I ended up purchasing this printer.Since then, this printer has been non-functional more than it has been functional. The quality is fine, the speed is fine, but it is the most temperamental piece of equipment I own. Nearly every time I've tried to print a document, there's been jam. After jam. After JAM. I have never had a printer that I have disliked more heartily. If you have the skills, the time, and the patience to continually take this printer apart to remove tiny, torn scraps of paper from the inner workings, then this is the machine for you! I'm starting to think I should be fined by some environmental group for the amount of paper I've been wasting on this machine. The printer roll is superfluous, as I never got that to work correctly. I believe it is the cutting feature, meant to be used with the roll paper, that is causing most of the paper jams, so this printer would probably work better without that extra. Also, the card readers are useless, as all of my digital cameras now use SD cards.Other than that, it's a pretty good printer. The photo quality is very good, the text quality is just fine, and as long as I'm not in any hurry for my documents, then I have no problem. All the same, I'll be upgrading to a less problematic printer in the near future.

The photos aren't worth the money you spend on the paper you print it on.Yeah.Plus it is SOOOOOOOOOOO SLOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWW...... even when just printing a black text on on like a word document. In Addition, *ALWAYS CHECK HOW MUCH IT COSTS TO BUY THE INK CARTRIDGES!*To refill all the colors PLUS just 1 black. For Prices on Refills go to...http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/BuyInkResults.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes&sku=C11C626011&ref=BIDTo get your better performance, this is not it. To keep Prices low...Still not worth it (due to the High Ink Refill Price for such a tiny in Cartridge.)I shouldn't complain for gettting it for free...BUT I want to warn the people who will have to actually PAY for this.I really Hope This helps Everyone with their decision on purchasing a new Printer.

DO NOT BUY EPSON PRODUCTS. That's what I learned. Here's why: I agree. Epson? Greedy company. I used to have the C82, for 1.5 yrs. Then I used non-Epson ink once. Boom, printer stops printing. Channels dried out. Junkyard. Epson was so kind to send me a C86 for free instead, so I was quite pleased. Only drawbacks at the time were offline time, $60 I had just invested in new (generic) cartridges (to see if I could get the printer working again with the EPSON brand ink but no) and of course the costly customer support phone (they charge you big $$$ for it). Anyway, the C82 was not available any more at the time (I now know why), so they got me the C86. I learned from the past and NEVER used non-Epson ink. Same result. Printer quits after 1.5 yrs. Only Cyan and Yellow still worked somewhat, Black and Magenta stopped. So now what? I read all the reviews here and thought 'Hey, I got an idea, I will buy another C86 at the local store, then return the new box with the old printer in it after 2 weeks for a full refund. Then Epson shall deal with their crappy product.' Not morally 100% correct, but selling such a product to me and millions of others isn't either, now is it? So guess what, the C86 (hmmmm, just like the C82 at the time) wasn't available anymore. Instead they had the C88+. Nah, I thought, not again. I'm an engineer, so why not try to fix it myself and then if necessary switch to an HP (LIKE 117 OTHERS THAT WROTE A REVIEW HERE!). So I popped off all the panels of the C86 until I got to the core. Two side panels, main panel, rear panels, all got easily removed. Snap in/snap out design, so that's good. A bit more tricky was getting to the actual print head. But I managed. That thing is cast together with a electronic chip, some ICs and whatnot, but I could already see it was all cluttered up with old ink. I cleaned everything, and put it back together as good as possible. Took me overall 3 hrs. Result: it got worse. Lost Yellow and Blue too. Guess what my reaction was? Ever seen OFFICE SPACE?? Today I got myself an HP Deskjet 3940. What's good about it, it cost me only $15 at my local Meijer store (somebody had returned it without the ink and USB cable) and the ink cartridges come with the print head. The print head is not part of the printer. So each time you get new cartridges (where the HPs are even cheaper than the EPSONs), you get new printheads too. With the EPSON, once the printhead is cluttered up with old ink, you're done. I guess this happens after roughly 1.5 yrs with every EPSON. I will try to post an image of the disassembled printer to the photos here, let's see if it goes through. Have fun with your C86! Enjoy it, as long as it still works...

The "bad rap undeserved" review below points to the real problem with this printer, which I was able to directly confirm myself recently. The problem is the Epson Durabrite ink.A few weeks ago my Mom's C84 went on the blink exactly as described ad nauseam - we'd given her a laptop a couple of Christmases ago and the printer had come with it. She seemed to get everything set up OK, and we never heard anything more until after it started printing blank pages, and only then did she mention that it had been printing with blank lines for some time before then, if not from the very beginning. Since I used to do computer hardware for a living, including printer service, and my own Epson 1520 wide-carriage has worked like a champ for over 10 years, I took the C84 home and had a look at it. Now I did know that Mom hadn't printed all that much and only used the Epson Durabrite inks. Long story short: the quick-drying ink dries too fast. On disassembling Mom's printer, I found the rubber siphon line, which both cleans the nozzles AND primes newly-installed cartridges, completely full of ink that had clotted to the consistency of toothpaste. Neither pressure nor suction was sufficient to clear it - I had to physically remove the entire line (about 8 inches or so) and force the gunk out with a metal roller. This explains the vast majority of the no-print and no-cleaning behavior reported below - if that line is clogged, neither head-cleaning passes nor the priming procedure for new cartridges will work, since the siphon action both functions depend on doesn't happen anymore. But the printer will still think the cartridges are being depleted, since the printer rewrites a new estimated ink level to the cartridge chips whether the ink is drawn down or not. And without those functions, it's only a matter of time before the ink dries up in one or more nozzles.Like so many others, Mom had installed a new black cartridge hoping to fix the problem, and the new one soon started registering as "empty." Knowing perfectly well that it was still full, I took it to a local refiller who handles Epson and had him reset the cartridge (free of charge!), and after reassembling the printer and running a couple of clean cycles with nozzle checks I was able to get the black and cyan printing back 100%, the magenta about 90%, and the yellow maybe 50% although it's kind of hard to tell. At least it prints well enough for her purposes now.The only recommendation I can make is for preventive care - if you need to do a head cleaning pass, do the following first: turn the printer off, then back on again. When the print head moves left, clear of its cleaning station on the right side of the printer, quickly unplug the printer so the head stays out of the way. To the right of the rubber squeegee on the left edge of the cleaning station, you'll see a narrow, raised rectangular lip with both a sponge AND some raised plastic buttons inside it. Using an eyedropper, fill this lip full of rubbing alcohol and watch what happens. If the alcohol drains out, the purge line is disconnected and probably clogged; cleaning cycles will be useless until it's fixed. If the alcohol stays put, plug the printer back in and cycle power as needed to return the printhead to its normal position over the cleaning station. Run the cleaning cycle and watch the rectangular lip to see whether the alcohol got sucked out of it. If not, the line is clogged - no point cleaning nor replacing cartridges until it's fixed. If the alcohol has been sucked out, it's now in the purge line and should hopefully dilute the waste ink enough that it'll flush completely through. Hopefully this will buy enough time until the next clean cycle or cartridge replacement...

The Epson Stylus C82, C84, and C86 are good for a short time only, maybe one year tops when purchased new. Then, the nozzles clog, the printer becomes useless junk. Epson no longer will repair these old models. This creates a problem for those of us using older computers like my Apple imac OS 8.6, as there are no longer any printers available that work with these old computers.

Плохо

First, let me say that the Epson C86 (and C84, the earlier version) produces beautiful prints, especially considering the fact it uses pigment inks (DuraBrite) rather than the dye based inks that HP and Canon use. As a rule, dye based inks have a wider color gamut and are more vivid, particularly on glossy paper, than pigment inks, but I also have an HP deskjet 9650 (A3) Photo printer and the Epson prints are very close in quality to those from the HP, especially when I use the DuraBrite Glossy Photo paper. Now for the bad news. First, everyone should realize when you buy an inkjet printer, you are actually buying a profit generating machine for the company that builds it. A very large percentage of the corporate profits of Epson and HP come from the sale of, you guessed it.....ink. They sell the printers at or close to cost, but make a killing on those tiny ink cartridges, and this is where the Epson will get you. Epson printers have a permanent, built-in printhead and it will sooner or later start to clog (do a Google search for Epson clogged nozzles.....you'll get over 6000 hits). When this happens, your prints will look really bad (banding and missing colors), and the "Epson solution" for this is to run cleaning cycles, which will burn through those high dollar cartridges even faster. I have had two Epson's to clogg almost completely, both within a week after the warranty had run out. Also, if the cartridge is low on ink, the printer will refuse to run a cleaning cycle until you replace the cartridge with a new one, then it will waste the ink in your new cartridge attempting to clear the nozzles. Epson cartridges have a microchip built in supposedly to monitor the ink remaining in the cartridge, but I have my suspicions that it may be responsible for the previous problems I mentioned as well as making it difficult (but not impossible) to refill the cartridges. If you do not use your printer regularly, I would recommend that you steer clear of Epson, the clogging problem is worse if you let the printer set for long periods of time without using it. In this case I would suggest HP or Canon, my HP printers set for several months at a time and very rarely get a clogged nozzle, one cleaning cycle usually clears it up. Also, the HP printers have the printhead built into the cartridge, so every time you replace the cartridge you get a brand new printhead. However, the HP cartridges are tiny with very little ink (thanks Carly.....glad you got the ax), if you do a lot of printing you had better have some cash. Finally, if you are having clogging problems, my solution might work for you and save some of your money from flowing into Epson's pockets. First, try to print something every day, even if it's just one small 4 x 6 photo. You want to keep the ink (all four colors) flowing in the printheads, letting the printer set will definitely cause you problems. Sooner or later, the printhead will clog and the nozzle test will show a clogged nozzle (broken lines). DO NOT run a cleaning cycle (this is exactly what Epson wants you to do.....it's money in their pocket). Instead, and there are a number of ways to do this (Google it), move the cartridge/printhead assembly to the center or left of the printer and immediately pull the plug, this will leave the area where the printhead is normally "parked" accessible. I take an eyedropper and soak the two small sponges that normally cover the printhead with Radio Shack tape head cleaner (alcohol), plug the printer back in, wait for the printhead to park itself and then cut the printer off with the switch. You want to do this as quickly as possible, don't ever leave the printhead "unparked" for any length of time. I usually let the printer set overnight, turn it on the next day and my nozzle check is perfect.....all without wasting any of that high dollar ink. Some people use Windex or distilled water, some people say not to use any of them including the alcohol.....that it will destroy the printhead, but I've had good luck with the tape head cleaner. Just remember, do this at your own risk....this will probably void your warranty if Epson finds out. If the printer is under warranty and you are unable to get the printhead nozzles restored, I would just ship it back to Epson, they'll probably send you a "refurbished" replacement. If it's out of warranty, I figure there is really nothing to lose. The Epson C86 is basically disposable (made in Indonesia) junk. It is often cheaper to buy a new printer and use the cartridges in your old printer rather than buy replacement cartridges alone. This way you will have a backup printer when the nozzles become hopelessly clogged in your original printer. The reason I continue to use the Epson is because it produces really nice prints (when it's working) that have excellent fade resistance. I frame a lot of my artwork and photographs and don't won't them to fade after a few months. I would like to have an Epson A3 p

It is still working great as ever! I've never had a problem with it, and it has consistently printed fantastic documents and even better photos! No one knows my framed pictures are from my printer and not from a photo lab. Maybe I'm just lucky, but I really only have good things to say about this printer and about Epson!

I have had inkjet printers since HP made their first one back in the 80's. I bought this Epson Photo R340 almost two years ago and it's still going like a warhorse. I recently switched from Windows to Mac and, when the new drivers were downloaded, it's looking as good as ever! Ink consumption is no worse than any other printer I've had (including HP) and with the six (6) separate cartridges you never feel as if you are "sacrificing" a cartridge because a certain shade of color is "out" (like with the old "tri-solor" cartridges and even the single Cyan and Magenta ones). I do graphic design, with photo and other artwork, and the quality is outstanding, especially is you use glossy photo paper (Epson is good but so is Kodak--it just smells a little funny!) I will admit I haven't used the "stright-on" printing of DVD/CD as I usually make my labels with Sure Thing software on Neato inkjet labels (running them through twice is absolutely no problem). I use images captured off of my DVD and it looks phenomenal. I have had raves about the work that has come off of this thing. I am in the market for another as I want to hook my Windows laptop up to one to continue the work that cannot be utilized on Mac software (I have had to learn to be "bi-lingual" in my work!) I tried to network the printers (Internet was a snap) but the new computers out now (and this goes for newer PC's as well as Mac) can't handle it. Not a problem--it's back to Epson for me and I know I won't be disapointed. (P.S. My brother has an Epson--different model--that uses the same cartridges as my R340 so buying ink in bulk makes perfect financial sense as well!)

I purchased this printer for a few reasons. I loved the idea of only replacing the ink that is needed. I loved the cost of the printer and the cost of the ink. It prints directly on CDs. Now, I'm going to tell you why these are NOT good traits.Replacing only the ink that is needed would be great if you could continue printing without the other ink colors. For example, I was printing a business report that was due early in the morning and it was late at night. The entire report was only black ink. I had known for sometime that my Magenta was running very low but I do very little color printing. So why replace it? Everytime that you print, turn off the machine, or just about anything else, a bit of each color ink is used to prime them for printing. Does not matter that you aren't using the Magenta, it still primes. I would have to guess that I get about 20-30 primes per ink before they are empty. And that is without printing anything. As soon as my Magenta ran out, ALL printing stops. You CANNOT print just black if any of the colors are not installed or are out of ink. I thought that being able to buy just the $13 black compared to buying the $38 black for my Canon was a steal. Turns out that to get my black running I had to buy not one $13 ink but, 6 - $13 inks. $70 later, and two trips to Staples I could print my report. I should have just got the $38 ink for my Canon. The printing of CD's is decent but is nothing to write home about. I find that the sticky labels that run through the printer and then are atached to the cd work far better. I don't know how many CD's got printed off center before I got a final that I could at least tolerate.

I started having problems with this printer before I got through even the first set of ink cartridges. The nozzles were getting clogged almost every time I used it and I had to go through numerous cleaning cycles. On the third set of cartridges I kept getting an error message saying there was a paper jam when there was not. I did some research on the internet and found this was a common problem. I kept rcycling the printer on and off about a dozen times, doing a page eject each time and the paper jam error disappeared only to be replaced by the infamous 2 flashing lights problem. I downloaded a program to reset this error code but it did not help. I have bought my last Epson printer and will probably replace it with a Canon product.

STATEMENT OF INTENT:Even though this printer is now 2 generations old (the C86 and C88 having been introduced), I thought I should write this review for reasons of record and posterity.THE STORY:I had owned an Epson C82 which, after a little over a year, wouldn't print black ink after installing a new black ink cartridge and running several print head cleanings. Thinking it was a fluke, I went out and replaced it with a new C84 model.A few months later, another C82 we had bought for occasional printing at work died with the same symptoms. After inquiring at a couple of local computer/electronics shops, they advised us that it would be better to buy a new printer, since repairing the old one would cost almost as much.About 3 weeks ago, my C84 (which is now about 14 months old) stopped printing magenta ink, even though it still showed there was some left. However, it said it was under 5% ink remaining, so I thought maybe it was actually out. I opened a *new* box of color ink cartridges and replaced the magenta ink cartridge. The magenta ink still would not print. In running print head cleanings, it ran down the yellow ink. Having already opened the box of cartridges, I replaced the yellow. A few more print head cleanings and it said that it was out of black now, too.I cut my losses right there. My black ink cartridges were in a new unopened box which I could still return.I called Epson's tech. support to find out if this was even repairable. Since I was out of warranty, they wanted $10 to continue talking to them. I told them I wouldn't pay unless they could assure me they could fix my problem. After working the tech. guy over for a few minutes, he admitted that IF YOU RUN THE PRINT HEAD CLEANING BACK-TO-BACK 3 TO 5 TIMES AND IT STILL WON'T PRINT, THE PRINT HEAD IS ALMOST CERTAINLY "DAMAGED". I don't know if it's just clogging, but the Epson tech. guy called it "damaged."This particular tech. support person claimed that the cause for the clogging was that I should have been turning my printer off at least every night. He said that WHEN AN EPSON PRINTER IS TURNED ON, THE PRINT HEAD IS LEFT IN AN "OPEN" POSITION. OVER TIME THIS CAN "DAMAGE" THE PRINT HEAD.I was told I could try taking the printer in to an Epson authorized repair center, but that it in terms of cost it would probably be at least a push to buy a new printer. As it turned out, there wasn't an authorized repair center within 100 miles of me, anyway. For the moment I'm just using a real cheap printer to get by until I find a more permanant replacement. I haven't completely ruled-out another Epson (I love the DuraBrite inks), but it's unlikely, and a Canon or HP is probably on the horizon. As a side note, while talking to Epson's tech. support, it was apparent that they're aware that the C80-series printers have problems with the print heads failing. It would be nice if they told you that, and what you should do to AVOID the problem (supposedly turn the printer off at night), as part of the printer setup instructions.PROS:- What I really loved about the C84 (and the C82, for that matter) was the DuraBrite ink. Every inkjet printer I had owned before those suffered from ink smudging, usually as one page printed out on top of the previous. Not so with the DuraBrite inks - no smudged prints, ever, in my experience.- Printing speeds were pretty fast.- 'Cancel print' button right on printer.CONS:- The print head clogging problems which plague these printers. Expect your printer to be dead after a year.- Very noisy page feeding.- Very long initialization when you turn on the printer. Or even if it's already on, but hasn't been used for a couple hours.- Poor envelope feeding; usually jams or mispositions.CONCLUSION:Great no-smudge ink, crummy machine.Still worth buying for a low price, but expect to replace the printer after 12 to 14 months.

The picture printing is very impressive when using the right paper, and the text printing is laser quality. Now, on to the best, yet most frustrating feature of this line of printers, direct CD/DVD printing.I too have had my share of feed issues with the Epson CD tray on several different printers (R200, R220, R340), but I have just discovered and solved the most frustrating of them, the one T.J. Vondrell is evidently having. The tray was being drawn in too far at the beginning of a CD print job, causing the subsequent ejection cycle to push the tray out UNDER the drop-down tray platform. I found that the sideways-mounted roller on the right side of the platform was sticking. The associated microswitch at that roller is what stops the initial insertion, at which point indexing using an optical reader commences as the reader looks at the white marks on the tray. When the roller springs back out as the tray clears it on the initial insertion, the tray is stopped, and the indexing begins. If it sticks, the tray just keeps on going out the back of the printer, and the printer generates all those frustrating error messages, not to mention the grinding sound of the tray coming back out of place under the tray platform. A VERY brief shot of WD40 using the provided spray straw to the roller fixed ALL tray issues with my 2nd brand new R340. I will now apply the same lube job to my other Epson printers. I hope this tidbit relieves a lot of frustration from you other Epson users. This is an easy fix, and one that Tech Support at Epson should be well aware of, but apparently isn't, as I now have a new R340 sent as a replacement for my 1st one that was doing the same thing. I have emailed them, and I hope they post it on their FAQ page. This fix should apply to all Epson printers that have a similar drop-down CD tray platform.P.S. As a rule now, I try to remember to give the tray a slight nudge as the CD print job begins. This should help extend the life of the somewhat weak roller system that pulls the tray in. I have a couple of well-used R-series printers that now require this assist, or the tray will not be drawn in.Good luck all with this otherwise fantastic printer.
