My Epson ExperienceLet me begin by saying that I have over ten years of experience with all things computer related. During that period I have worked in almost every aspect of computer support. I have personally cleaned out countless numbers of inkjet printers with q-tips distilled water and alcohol. I kept my own Epson 740 going for 5 years without too much difficulty. I only got rid of it because I had a client that was desperate for a printer that would accept a Mac serial port. Boy due I miss that Epson 740. I bought a C82 a little less than a year ago, after reading good reviews. I assumed it would be built at least as well as the Epson 740 I was using before.Even after ten months my C82 still appears in almost brand new shape inside and out. Heck, I've only used it about thirty times or so. I keep it inside of cabinet shielded from dust. Plus as a matter of standard practice, I turn off all inkjet printers as soon as I finish using them, and I always change ink cartridges as quickly as possible to prevent ink from drying out inside printers. So was I ever surprised when my printer stopped working. It had worked fine with the first set of cartridges I had installed. However, as soon as I changed cartridges the printer stopped working. I tried cleaning it at least fifty times, but it did nothing to improve the situation. So I did the natural thing and googled my problem. I was shocked by the sheer number of search results. After reading through the reviews at Amazon and the hundreds of messages at fixyourownprinter.com I've come to realize that Epson has built and continue to build a printer that is so poorly designed one must question their integrity as a company. To think that so many people would experience the same problem and that their only solution is to continue to send people refurbished printers until their warranty expires. Oh, and the part that will really get you, is that they require you to purchase and install a new set of four Epson branded ink cartridges to insure that your currently installed cartridges are not what is defective. So before you can even have your printer replaced you must invest at least sixty dollars on ink. Of course they offer to send you new ink with the replacement printer. Still to ask me to sink my time, energy, and sixty dollars into having my printer replaced with another one, which will simply get me right back to where I began. I mean really, the nerve. Is this what our present day world has come to? Have we set ourselves up so that these large corporations can totally take advantage of us in this way? Is there no recourse? Are there no standards of business ethics that they can be held accountable for? The experience has left me feeling unusually sad. Epson has made me realize just how much I am at the mercy of these large corporations. I mean, if you want to print, who else can you buy a printer from?I know that even if Epson would own up to this, they would argue that they had to make the printers so cheaply to remain competitive. Without doing so they would go out of business tomorrow. We've heard all that before. Haven't we?Still though, this printer is made by someone in a Chinese factory. I know I'm going out on a limb here, but I would guess that that person is not well paid. Perhaps they are even exploited to some extent or at the very least we could guess that they are taken advantage of to some extent. Then as they role off the Chinese production line, Epson sends these defective printers all over the globe, wrapped up in fancy magazine advertisements. People like me buy the printer, use the ink, put in new ink, discover it no longer works, call Epson, ship the printer back to Epson, get the refurbished printer in the mail, and . Once the warranty is up we move our broken printer into the garage for a year or so, and then throw it away. It all seems so pointless.Don't think me a luddite either. I love computers, printers, and gadgets as much as the next person. It's just that it disgusts me that I am forced to deal with a corporation that is not held to any kind of moral or ethical principles. As long as they are making money and growing we think of them as a good thing, without worrying about who they are taking advantage of. What are we doing here? How can we let Epson get away with this? Really!Well it's not difficult for me to say I will be boycotting all Epson products in the future. I mean I'm sort of doubtful of their quality anyways. Oh and I haven't even mentioned the very unhelpful tech support and customer service representatives that I called long distance at my own expense. What a waste! Really what a waste! Sincerely, - Mark Whitney - Hollywood, CAP.S. I know the solution is to buy myself a do-it-yourself printer cleaning kit. If you google it you'll see that many companies sell them specifically for the Epson C80/C82. However, if you try to buy one you'll soon discover that they are all sold out, as I mentioned before I'm no

I have run over 15,000 sheets through my R300 and RX620 without any complaints. I buy cheap generic ink for $1.40 a cartridge without any problems. I know 3 others who own the same printers and they are very satisfied. I even recommended an RX620 to my boss who is also very satisfied. Her three young children use it for their school projects and have not experienced any problems. May be we have been lucky. My son has had Epsons for 8 years and he is a serious amateur photogragher who demands quality printing. I am amazed at how a few people who experienced "excessive ink usage" don't understand why all inks are used when printing. This technique keeps you from having clogging issues. If you seldom used a particular color you would probably experience clogging of that color. My ink costs are so low that that I find the complaints ridiculous. I run my cartridges down to 2% before I consider replacing them. I simply overlook the warning messages until I really need to replace a cartridge. HP cartridges are truly expensive even when you consider refilled units, so why pick on Epson?

Purchased in May of 2004, getting worn out parts warning December 2007. Our C84 has printed out massive amounts of video labels and color cd inserts at least five days a week. Color cartridgs were cheap and no problem because we bought them in the aftermarket (private label). Amazed others had so many problems, maybe we are just lucky.

AVOID THIS EPSON PRINTER. It works well until you need to replace ink cartridge. Then it fails. And when it fails, it is not just a minor problem... you get nothing but blank sheets, as ink tubes clog up. Epson recommends buying new ink, which does not work. No solution except Trash Bin or Epson repair service that costs more than buying a new printer. In fact, when you call their help line, the operator recommends purchasing another as a cheaper solution... and they will give you a $10 "loyalty discount". All the other reviews are right. This is a great printer if you want something that lasts only a few months. If you want it to work past warranty... choose another.

I bought this printer to replace my Epson 890 which I've used for over five years with no problems. I wanted a printer that printed on DVD's. It worked alright for one month and then jammed and never worked again. Other people have complained about this same problem so it's some type of defect in the design. I've had to go back to my old 890. Most of the new Epson printers cost more than $100 for a full set of ink cartridges which is crazy for a consumer model printer. From now on I will read all the reviews I can before I purchase a printer from Epson again.

This is my third Epson, and with its untimely death I've finally accepted the painful truth: Epson printers produce wonderful results... WHILE THEY WORK. And, unfortunately, they don't work for long. There's a reason Epson is no longer the #1 printer maker. This is the third Epson that died on me after about a year of use. All of them died of the Clog From Hell disease, but whilst the first two at least continued printing something (so I could use it to print throwaway drafts and such), this one just keeps spitting out blank pages at me. Replacing the cartridges doesn't work, running nozzle cleaning cycles doesn't work, NOTHING works. And did I mention that Epson printers downright refuse to print if one of the color inks is low, even if you're only looking to print black-and-white? I see no point in having to replace a cartridge if I'm not going to use it. Except, perhaps, to suck more money out of your customers. So, after $120-worth of wasted ink and paper and enough stress to last me for the next decade, I'm finally saying goodbye to Epson. Its printers can make wonderful prints, but they just aren't reliable. If you don't mind having to replace your printer every year or so, AND spend a fortune on cartridges in the meantime, then by all means buy an Epson. Otherwise, RUN AWAY and don't look back!

I have this printer for 5 months now and printed quite some photos as well as normal text prints. Overall I'm very satisfied with the print quality, especially photos. I've been printing on 8x10 inch premium glossy photo papers and the photos come out very nicely (even not with the highest quality setting). I prepare to frame some of them and hang on my walls.Epson is a better printer maker than any other brands. During the 5 months I have printing problem for only once, when the photos came out with faint lines. The problem is easily identified after I read the manual, and fixed after I spent 5 minutes to clean the printhead. One con is that sometimes the photos come out with slightly different colors than on the computer screen. But after I check the "auto color correction" in the printing option, this issue became minimum.Another con, though I know it is probably the same with all printer brands, is that the ink (esp. black) runs out quickly with large photo prints. Never printed CD though.

I agree with the previous reviews. I never liked the way the paper fed into the printer but it gave quick sharp print jobs...until I had to replace the ink. After that it was all down hill. Thought it might be the ink so bought more. Nothing. Had a friend who works with and repairs printers look at it. After he tried everything he could he admitted defeat. THEN I looked up these reviews.....a lesson learned!

After reading numerous other Amazon reviews. along with several newsgroup postings, I at least have the comfort of knowing that MANY people have the same tragic tale to tell about this printer that I have. (Okay, cue the violin.) The printer worked just fine for about a year and a half -- enough time for the warranty to expire -- then suddenly developed an un-uncloggable clog. The printer will not deliver any ink from the black cartridge. (I have read several variations on this story in which it's either the yellow cartridge, or both the yellow and black.) I have put in a new black cartridge, run countless cleaning cycles, and cleaned the black cartridge compartment with Original formula Windex, but no dice. I am told there's a rubber suction hose that can come loose, but that still appears to be attached. My brother-in-law also said the hose appeared to be attached, but that a sponge seemed to be missing from the print head assembly. He then expressed the opinion that the whole printer "looks disposable."Actually, a number of folks who've written reviews have described the C84 as "disposable," and there are two other points on which there seems to be a widespread consensus:1. The Durabrite ink in the cartridges is a double-edged sword. While it may be resistant to the kind of smearing that ink jet printouts are known for, it also dries to an ultra-hard consistency that is a major contributor to these un-uncloggable clogs.2. There may be a design flaw in the C84's print head that Epson refuses to acknowledge. In fact, I contacted EPSON by email -- they don't have a toll-free number -- and they told me to do everything I've already done. They went on to say that if I do everything they tell me and the printer still won't work, it requires service. DUH! But of course, the service would cost as much, if not more, than a new C84. Epson also claims that using non-Epson ink cartridges may be causing the problem, even though it may in fact be Epson's ink that's the culprit.Oh yes, and like so many other people who are telling this tale, I bought several new cartridges just before the printer broke down, and now I won't be able to use them.Well, at least I have one workaround for printing text. Since the color cartridges are still working, I can just turn my text dark blue. So, I can't recommend the C84. But don't take my word for it. Trust me, you'll find plenty of other reviews that say pretty much what I just said.

I bought the RX620 when it was new just out two years ago and they were still playing ink cartridge games. I don't like the fact that you can't print if one of the cartridges is low....I don't like the fact that it often can't separate pages so it upchucks several...I don't like the fact that the price is about half what it was then....I don't like the fact that Epson support doesn't....I don't like the fact that I now have a message that no one apparently can explain about parts reaching the end of their useful life (after less than 2 years) and have to be replaced....I don't like the poor quality of the negative and slide scanning (which is why I bought it)--otherwise it's fine.

This printer is a horrid little beast that will not last long before breaking, and require you to continue feeding it color ink even when you don't use it. Epson makes printers that work for a year, then develop some sort of mechanical problem. Just a fair warning, stay away...

The photo prints are good, but the first set of ink cartidges ran out quickly. I had no idea that a new pack of cartridges runs about $70!!! 3 packs will cost more than the price of the printer! I tried 3rd party cartridges and the printer refuses to use them. I'm disappointed with Epson's high ink costs and forced lock in. I plan to NEVER purchase another Epson product again.

I've heard some complaints that people have had to greatly tweak the settings to get the printout color accurate. I've never encountered this problem, but I HAVE encountered a different issue.I've purchased 3 sets (18 cartridges) of ink since I bought this printer. One set was generic, the other two sets were genuine Epson. I have had a serious problem with diminishing print quality. With the generic set, my ink warning light came on, telling me to replace the cartridge. When I took the cartridge out to replace it, I could feel (and hear when I shook it), that the cartridge was still half-full of ink.Another SERIOUS issue regarding ink supply, is I've been having to clean the print heads before and after every print job. It all started when I printed a photo and a HUGE drop of cyan ink landed right in the center of the image as I was printing. The rollers then smudged and dragged the drop all over the printout. I cleaned the print heads but the real problem was the ROLLERS. They were all covered with cyan ink and no matter how much I cleaned the print heads, I was still getting cyan-colored ink lines on all my printouts. I had no choice but to open the top and go in with alcohol swabs and Q-Tips, and slowly remove all the ink from the rollers. Then it happened when I was printing on CDs/DVDs. I put the tray in properly and the printer was telling me I was low on black in. I began printing and walked away. When I came back, I had a CD with a huge glob of black, streaky ink ALL over the CD and all over the CD tray used to print with. I had to throw away the CD and soak the tray in soapy water... and go back into the printer with alcohol swabs and Q-Tips and clean the rollers off again because now they were coated with black ink.I've since thrown out about 8 DVDs and 4 CDs because of this problem. Who wants to keep a streaky, blotchy DVD? Even if I'd wanted to keep it, the ink seemed like it would take 3 days to dry properly because it was such thick globs that had seemingly fallen out of the ink cartridge. It's as though the cartridge has lost its vacuum and all the ink was falling out when the print head opened. The ink dried in clumps that you could actually peel off - like when latex paint drips off the side of the can it comes in.I've since replaced ALL the ink cartridges with genuine Epson ones and I've carefully cleaned all the rollers. I have not have the leaky ink problem as of yet but I am getting dull stripes across my printouts, like the printer forgot to throuroughly print in that spot. I'm hoping I can correct this with more head cleaning and nozzle checking. If you're going to buy this printer - don't take the chance with generic ink cartridges. It seems like you'll save money but in actuality, you'll spend more time cleaning up the mess it causes and you may have to buy a new printer in the end. I don't know if that's what caused my problem but it seemed to all start with the use of the generic cartridges. They're set up differently than geniune Epson brand cartridges. They have a hole in the top of the cartridge that is covered by a label. You must peel off the label before inserting the cartridge in the printer and you can hear a *hiss* noise as you reveal the hole - almost as though you're releasing the vaccuum that keeps the ink in. That scared me from the start and I think that could be where my problem lies.Hope I've helped.

I am another sucker that bought modern inkjet products. My old epson inkjet was a workhorse, the newer ones are throwaway junk.My first epson inkjet lasted for years, including many ink changes. It just kept working. Finally, the paper transport failed and I had to buy another printer. So I bought a epson C66. This inkjet printer worked for about a year and a half. When it failed, it was clogged heads and they would not clear. I thought it was a fluke since so many web reviews are favorable for inkjets nowadays, including this particular model.Given my past experience with epson, and all the good reviews for inkjets, I took a risk and bought another. This time a epson C84. It failed within weeks of the warranty expiration. The heads were clogged and unclearable.Thank goodness the store that sold me the replacement ink cartridges had a "no questions asked, 100% inkjet cartridge guarantee". After a few attempts at clearing the heads, the cartridges were 1/2 empty! It costs more to have the printer repaired than to buy a new unit. These printers aren't considered household trash where I live, so I have the final indignity of paying a fee at the dump to recycle this electronic junk. It's a shame that so many web reviewers don't discuss the short lifetime of the modern inkjets. From what I can see on the web, a reviewer tests the printer for a few days and moves on. No long term testing. In my opinion, this has led to an attitude on the part of inkjet manufacturers that long term reliability no longer matters. The inkjet price war has made this type of printer throwaway junk. Pumping out junk that lasts for 12.5 months is ludicrous. I can't recommend any of the low cost inkjets at this point...they are all limited use ripoffs. The cost per page is very high, and they have very short lifetimes.I email all my pics now and on the rare occasion when I need a hardcopy I sneak one at work. They have a high end color laser that has worked for about 4 years now without a problem.I don't know what the answer is, maybe the new low cost lasers will rescue the low-end printer industry. Maybe.

I bought an R200 last year to print DVD labels. After about 150 labels, the label print function jammed. I returned the printer and received a replacement in about two weeks. Since I was facing a deadline, I had to purchase another label printer right away. The R220 was available so I bought it instead of another R200. The replacement R200 was put aside as a backup. The R220 lasted just under a year, printing mostly DVD labels. Now the R220 DVD print function won't work. I unpacked the replacement R200 backup printer and discovered, much to my dismay, that it won't print DVDs either. It's DVD print function is jammed just like the printer I returned. Epson must test only the paper print and not the disc print. Now I have two usless printers and another deadline! The photo printer does a good job, even on 8 x 10 or 8-1/2 x 11 paper. The DVD print quality, however, is mediocre at best. As such, I would not recommend either the R200 or the R220. There are much better photo printers on the market and the useful DVD print life seems to be a paltry 200 discs or so.Some further advise: Don't buy spare ink cartridges for either printer since a full set will cost as much as the printer. Just buy replacement cardridges as needed. The printer will likely fail before you have used up the factory supplied cartridges.

i don't know what your preferance is, but this printer is a pretty nice piece of machinery. especially for the price. although i frequently have to reload the DVD tray, the fact is there IS a DVD tray. it does tend to be quite annoying sometimes, but it is straight up difficult to find printers with this type of accessory. if you look in the stores, you will notice the same thing. (depending on where you live)the only other problem is trying to find discs to use on here. i accidentally bought thermal printable discs which don't work with this type of ink. it just turns into ink beads. i have been using verbatim inkjet printable dvd-r discs and those have been the best for use in this printer. make sure you get inkjet printable, that is a must. i wouldn't recommend memorex printable dvd-r discs because they have quite an ugly label of memorex written right in the center of the disc.there is also a handly little tool (software that comes with the printer) that allows you to center your own pictures onto the disc. it took a little bit of tweeking, but now i have professional looking dvds.the only thing i recommend is to put a layer of clear coat over the top of the discs due to the fact the ink WILL run if water touches the surface. i have been using matte finish (basically flat clear coat) and it looks just like it did without the clear coat. i just don't have to worry about the discs running when water touches them. also don't forget to mask the bottom of the discs when you do this (the discs tend to lift up and a little bit of overspray hits the recordable side if you are using spray.) i don't know if other inks work this way, but the stuff in the R220 just happens to be water-based.

After using this for a month and doing everything possible to try to get it to print CDs under OSX, I am forced to reconsider my initial review of this product. Downgrading it from 3 stars to 1.This is my 3rd Epson printer. Although both of my old Epson Stylus models still work (literally after years of heavy use) I bought the R300 to use with OSX, and to print directly onto CDs and DVDs.I was shocked at how thirsty this puppy is, and invested in a continuous ink system. It took some fiddling to get it to work right. The trick is to tape the ink feed lines to the open lid allowing exactly enough free line to accomodate the movement of the cartridge without having it trip up the movement of the carriage. Measure about 16 inches from the printer cartridge and tape the flexible ink lines at that point about two inches from the left side of the open lid. Leave the lid open during printing. Also, make sure the ink containers which are positioned outside the printer are at the same height as the cartridge inside the computer. With the R300 this means putting them on a 4 inch platform, on the left side of the printer. If the ink containers are too low, the ink won't flow. If they're too high, you'll get blotching. The speed and quality of the printing are fantastic (when it's set up properly) but for home use it's very expensive. Makes me appreciate my old 600. With the continuous ink system you can visually see how far the ink goes down after each printing, and it is dramatic. One advantage over the older models is borderless printing, which helps with designing DVD cases, etc. Finally, as someone who is pretty tech savvy and good with electronic devices, I thought I'd be able to get all the features working on this with no hassles.I have now officially GIVEN UP trying to print on CDs or DVDs with this printer. Despite buying a new CD tray, and spending extra money to buy Epson's own Cd printing software, the unit just will not print no matter what settings it is on, or how carefully I position the tray.An endless cycle of error messages has worn my patience away.Epson's "support" is terrible. The support pages online are filled with marginally useful manuals and drivers. Nothing to really help trouble-shoot the product.I will be researching other brands now, to see if HP or Canon offers a more user friendly model.Good Luck. Hope this helps someone.

Well, I go this printer because I do event videography and I needed a printer to print directly to DVDs and also print the DVD labels. I used to use my past roommate's printer, and it worked perfectly fine, besides the occasional DVD tray jams. So I went and bought my own printer. I took it out the box and followed the prep instructions, but since I have a mac, it took me longer than expected for the computer to recognize the printer. After I got the drivers and programs installed, the printer worked just fine. But there are a couple issues I have with this printer. One is that it NEVER prints exactly the same way for 2 or more consecutive images...even when the images are the same, and have the same dimensions. For one print, it will start higer in the page, for another it will start lover, but the one that frustrates me the most is when it grabs the paper unevenly and prints DIAGONALLY. Sometimes it will print 8x10s at a 1-3 degree diagonal to the parallel of the page, which makes me mad because that in addition to not printing at the same startpoint makes it impossible for me to print double sided labels without something messing up.

My job requires me to do a lot of color printing. I have had a lot of different Inkjet printer through my carrier and I have to say the R300 is by far the worst. I have a R300 for my home printer which does not get used often. The print heads clog up and the paper handling is so bad that every other print miss feeds or jams. The printer will miss feed 90% of the time. You can not leave this printer unattended. You have to fiddle with the paper constantly. This printer is very frustrating; the beautiful prints it makes when it works right only make you mad because you know that it will take more fiddling and constant attention to get the next print.
