When you read many reviews, you can easily see that the "one-star" ratings are usually by people who don't read the instructions, or possibly just can't understand them. I've read all of the one-star ratings on this R-200 now and I totally agree with them. No I'm not a printer expert, but I've owned a lot of different brands of printers and this is by far the worst, though not the most expensive. My dad had an Epson b&w printer in the 90's and each time I had to use it, I would laugh and laugh at how it took such a long time when you turned it on to get ready to print: grunting, groaning, clicking, whirring... over and over for literally minutes. I swore I'd never buy an Epson printer, though some of their other products are useable.But... silly me... when it was time to replace my nice HP printer simply because I wanted something that would do a perfect job on "photographs", I fell prey to Epson's claim to top quality. It really didn't dawn on me that the unit would be virtually the same feed and cleaning mechanism as my father's old piece of junk. I hated it from the beginning. Photos were NOT photo quality, it took ages and ages to start printing, and it ate ink like a famished muppet monster. If you don't print regularly, the ink cartridges (there's 6 total, each costing big bucks from Epson) dry up on the outputs, and even though you can shake them and hear the slosh, they don't work. If you buy non-Epson cartridges you get a warning that you are voiding your warranty when you use them, even though they do work fine, and some last much longer than Epson's.But now after 3 years I've had enough of this expensive POC so I'll have to gamble on some other brand... it will definitely never, never, never be another Epson, I don't care if President Obama puts his picture on the front of it, and God blesses it himself, I will not buy it.One point I can make to those of you stuck with this piece of junk: If you leave it turned on 24/7 it doesn't go through all of the initial bracketybrack setup routine. But it still dries up and won't work, even if you're just printing black, if you have run out of cyan or yellow, it WILL NOT WORK until you buy more cartridges to allow to dry out. It's a total scam and believe me, you will be sorry... maybe your initial impression will be good, but just wait... you'll see.UPDATE 9/30/12:OK so I dawdled around and didn't order the new printer until today. I am doing a government application for immigration visa for my wife, and that requires mounds of printing and copying. Today I needed to print out my bank statement for the last year, and when I went to the bank site, it said they are changing the system on the 3rd and I'll only have the past ONE month available... so of course I want to print this immediately. My printer had been moved a few days ago and it's been turned off during that time, so I reluctantly started fiddling with it to make it come on properly. About 20 or 25 times I turned it on and off and all I get are blinking lights. I did every trick I've ever done before, unplugging and sloshing the cartridges, going to the cartridge cleaning and nozzle check software... nothing at all worked. So I go back and read all of these ONE STAR reviews again, and of course they're all having the same problems. I choke back the urge to drop an atomic bomb on the Epson Headquarters and I look for the best printer (non-Epson) that I can afford, and order a Hewlett Packard OJPRO8100 Wireless Color Printer which has an abundance of good reviews and only a few 3-star reviews, no negatives... $110 compared to over $200 for the Epson (not counting the $200 or so I've spent on ink cartridges to replace cartridges that still contained ink). Then I read one more review on the Epson 200, which said something about unplugging the power cord to reset the interlocks. Well that shouldn't work, because that's what always causes the problems... but I tried it and bingo, suddenly the printer works as good as it ever did (marginal and slow). At least I managed to print my bank statement. Wish I could bill Epson for all of the hours and hours I've spent trying to make this stupid piece of junk work!

At school I've been using an Epson Stylus Pro 3880 and have gotten kind of addicted to printing my photos. The R3000 is half the cost and almost exactly the same except for it's narrower 13" maximum print width (vs the 17" 3880). Both use the "UltraChrome K3 with Vivid Magenta" ink set which is the same one used by almost all of Epson's "Pro" line of printers. Honestly, I don't know why the R3000 isn't in their "Pro" line since it could reasonably be used by a pro who never needed to print anything wider than 13".I printed some color test charts at the Sam's Club photo lab (which should be reasonable quality since they actually calibrate their printers at least once a day and when they change paper rolls) and on my R3000, then compared them to an actual X-Rite produced ColorChecker chart, and the output from the R3000 significantly beats the output from Sam's Fuji Frontier minilab photo printer. The Fuji Frontier print is noticeably duller with generally darker colors and a narrower range of saturated color reproduction. You don't have to be a color expert to see the difference. For the R3000 the ink cost is about $1/ml which comes out to about $0.01 per square inch if you get it at a discount (search for "red river Cost of Inkjet Printing Epson R3000"). That makes a borderless 8x10 cost about $0.80 in ink, and a borderless 8.5x11" cost about $1 in ink. A sheet of Epson Ultra Premium Photo paper costs as little as $0.60 if you get it at a discount, so printing a borderless 8.5x11" ends up costing as little as $1.60 in supplies. (Not to mention that you can get third-party paper that's just as good or better than Epson's official paper for less money.)The cheapest photo labs charge around $1.50 for an 8x10 (my local Sam's Club currently charges $1.46). If we use a whole 8.5x11 sheet of official paper and a full 8x10 worth of ink to print an 8x10, we get $1.40 in supplies per 8x10 which is slightly cheaper than even Sam's Club and significantly higher quality. Good third-party paper would be around $0.35/sheet meaning that you could also do as well as $1.15 per 8x10, maybe even better.Admittedly though that doesn't incorporate the cost of the printer, which you won't have to incur if you just use a photo lab. If you bought the printer for say $800 and you've gotten your per-8x10 supply costs down to $1.15, then you'd need to print about 2,580 8x10's before your total costs started to get lower than Sam's Club's $1.46.When you get larger than 8x10 though then the printer really starts to pay off. One place online that isn't too expensive and has a good reputation charges $6.30 for a 12x18 on glossy photo paper printed with a photographic lab process. It's possible to get decent 13x19" gloss ink jet photo paper (same stuff that costs $0.35/sheet for the 8.5x11) for about $1.50/sheet. 12x18" of ink costs you $2.16 so total cost for a 12x18 on the R3000 with that paper is $3.66. At that price you need to print 300 or so of these large prints before your prints start costing less than $6.30, and again the ink jet prints will have better color quality than the photographic process printer. You also have the entire lifetime of the printer to make all these prints that we're talking about. If you make on average about 10 8x10" prints every week then it would take about 5 years to make this cost back, but if you made two of the 12x18" prints per week then it would take about 2.8 years to brake even compared to the lower quality protographic process prints ordered online. But none of these estimates take into account the value of the convenience and additional quality you get from having a modern photo inkjet printer right in front of you. Add in costs like transportation to pick up photos, time spent driving, any sort of cost of inconvenience by having to wait for prints to arrive in the mail, the additional value of better color quality, and other hard to quantify things then the real savings may be better. Depending on how much these costs add to the cost of photo lab prints, a decent ink jet printer like this might pay for itself much more quickly.Still, you have to keep in mind that owning your own printer like this only makes sense if you're going to be doing a certain volume of printing. If you only ever print maybe 10 8x10s a month then the printer will never be worth it solely from a cost-per-print savings perspective. Also, if all you ever print is 4x6 then even just your ink cost without paper is going to be around 2.5x the cost of getting 4x6 prints made ata cheap online lab or drug store. So for small prints like 4x6 the printer will absolutely never pay for itself from the supply perspective, and probably not even from the convenience perspective. The only problems I've heard of with this printer seem to involve priming the print head (pumping ink into the initially empty hoses that run from the ink cartridges to the print head, basically) and the printer going through unnecessary cleaning cycles, but Epson

I've been a serious photographer enthusiast for years, maybe decades. Most of my semi-pro work has been produced through well known national photo developers, which can offer price, customization, and quality (canvas, art papers, framing, etc). When I compare my current prints to previous prints, the personally controlled Epson Stylus 3880 prints surpass the national professional developer product in every case.I wish I had purchased an Epson Professional Imaging printer sooner. I chose the Stylus Pro 3880, because it has great proven features and an excellent target price in view of projected benefit. I gained immediate feedback and flexibility to produce my prints. I am so excited with the control I now have of the workflow and print output. The quality is excellent, what I hoped.Part of this control is selecting paper for the job or customer. Epson's Photo and Fine Art papers are excellent, and a wider range of professional papers are available. I have already used Epson's Ultra Presentation and Luster, and Signature Cold Press Bright, Exhibition Fiber papers, and Velvet Fine Art paper (my personal favorites). I couldn't be more pleased with the Epson Stylus Pro 3880. Excellent prices can be found if you search for paper.Epson's Hot Press Paper is wonderful. Wow! The output is excellent; I was fixed, persuaded, hooked, and sold on Luster and Ultra Matte, but Hot Press is, well unbelievably, great. I get fine gamut output on a truly superb paper. This paper does not disappoint. It is a smooth paper that comes in Natural and Bright, and 100 percent cotton. For matte I love warmth, this is excellent.Received and printed some of Hahnemuhle's Fine Art Bamboo. It is at 290 gsm with a warm natural tone and beautiful texture. Wow, with this tone, I can't say how wonderful suitable pictures turn out for print. It is incredible paper for warmth for your pro pictures. This paper feeds without a hitch in the 3880. Candidly, this Bamboo paper fascinates me; I just study the output, peruse it. My wife must think I am insane; I look at the output like that troll, "precious". Excellent paper and output. Download the ICC at the manufacturer's site. The Hahnemuhle papers are superb; I've used Photo Rag Smooth, Ultra Smooth, Pearl, and Bamboo; and I'm waiting to receive and try Baryta, Torchon, Durer, and Monet Canvas. Thus far, the output is tremendous.Monet Canvass, I am unable to get this canvas to feed, from the back or front. Baryta is amazing. The gamut is superb. I cannot compare Hahnemuhle Baryta at this point; it is singular.I am also waiting for some Bergger Paper. The most problematic topic that I have faced using the Epson 3880 is user defined paper size with 3rd party ICC profiles. It is hit and miss. Really, I haven't figured out a certain process that avoids repeated and repeated back feeder attempts. It is frustrating enough to "abandon the 13x19" for another easier size format. I am about to give up on this size format, just to avoid the time COST. EPSON please correct this problem of Epson Signature ICC profiles and 3rd party ICC profiles with user defined paper sizes. My only workaround is using a commensurate Epson Default Profile, when using Epson Signature or 3rd party papers, instead of some 3rd party ICC profiles. Part of the problem must be in a failure to recognize and change from photo to matte, or vice versa, black.Software setup is easy, and documentation is clear. I set my printer up on a network/router. I accomplished this in a few minutes, and was printing quickly, surprisingly fast.Printing From the Back Tray: There is some extra care when printing from the back Tray. At this point, my experience is that if you load paper in the back tray and push it into position before spooling there my be some delay, but if you spool and then load and push the paper down into position in the back tray, it continues seamlessly. This really is a small foible; just become familiar with the printer. If your back tray does not print, try turning the printer "off" and the paper will eject; then try again as mentioned supra. It seems if you press slightly on the papers edge to load, when the "load paper" LED is prompted, it will load every time. This seems to work regularly for me, when loading paper from the back tray. The exception seems to be 13x19 user defined when used with Epson Signature Profiles and 3rd party ICC profiles requiring a Black photo/matte change. The TUMI cover is great and I recommend it to anyone who wants to keep their investment protected from dust. It fits nicely and is a great product to protect your printer. Get it! To install your printer cover easily, start from the back at the back feeder tray and work to the front. If you start from the front, when the back tray is installed you may need to play with installation.I have been using Spyder 3 SSR 100 to make my workflow tight. Used this product for few weeks; The monitor calibration is excellent. I am getting very reliable monitor to pri

I've owned this printer for a few months now. I have no idea how this printer will function in the long term but I am more than happy with it so far. There has been no mechanical problems encountered.I took notice of the number of reviews both here and on other websites that complain of excessive ink use. I have not found this to be the case. Given that the printer purges the black inks when changing from glossy to matte surface media, it is entirely likely that it will waste ink if the user frequently goes back and forth between these types of papers. Personally, I'm not a big fan of most matte finish papers so I have only used glossy or smooth surface papers so far. Should I ever decide to print on matte finish papers, I will delay until I have several prints to make on this type of paper rather than only do a couple and change back to glossy ink. Another thing I've noticed is that the printer will give a "low ink" notice long before it is necessary to change the cartridge. I've printed several 11x14 inch prints before the low cartridge goes dry. So it appears the low ink warning is simply a reminder that the cartridge will need replacement soon but not immediately. The ink cartridges are expensive but they will allow the user to print quite a bit before needing to be replaced. I've not kept track of how many prints I get from the cartridges because it will vary with the size of the print and the colors in the images printed.Print quality? Excellent in my opinion. I've used only Epson papers with the provided profiles and I've been very happy with the colors and print resolution. My previous printer was an HP that did a creditable job for several years but the prints from this Epson surpass the quality from the old HP. I've printed some 13x19 inch prints on the Epson and compared them to 8.5x11 from the HP and the Epson prints look as sharp or sharper than the HP prints with colors every bit as vivid. I am very happy with this printer thus far.EDIT: Not long after I did this review, I decided to try some different papers. I'm still in the learning stage but I'm really impressed with the results I'm getting with papers other than Epson's own brands. I've been particularly impressed with the "fine arts" papers I've tried. Most of these papers are matte finish and require the use of the matte black ink in the R3000. As I indicated above, I have avoided switching back and forth between the Photo Black and the Matte Black inks. I've been completely satisfied with the ink consumption of the printer by following this procedure. Although I've always preferred a smooth or glossy surface in my printing papers, I've been more than a little impressed with the fine arts papers I've tried. And I've tried a bunch...from Epson, Hahnamuhle, Moab, Museo and Canson Infinity. Using the paper makers downloaded color profiles and following their instructions (along with a little diversion from the provided instructions and experimentation on my part), the images look outstanding to me. I'm not a very good technician although I try to stay within the parameters of the equipment and materials I use so "outstanding to me" is very subjective. As Richard Benson, the great expert on all forms of printing, has said, "It's how the picture looks" that is more important than following a perfectly consistent methodology. So, as of November 2012, I'm still highly enthusiastic about the potential of this printer.

Wow! This printer has changed my understanding of how professional color prints should look. It is also forcing me to investigate, learn, and implement color calibration between camera, computer, screen, and printer in order to more properly manage color consitency across the various technologies. Those images that have proper color look absolutely stunning coming off the Epson 3880.I've not had the printer long enough or used it enough to thoroughly experience what it has to offer, but I spent the weekend recently at a photography show and had a chance to look at and discuss large color & black&white prints with dozens of other photographers. I was encouraged by what I saw and what I heard from those photographers using the Espson 3880 for their printing. If you are put off by the price of this printer, please take the time to study the many comments from folks who provided the details of how they determined that the bulk of the price of this printer is in the ink that comes with it. The cartridges are huge, and I heard directly from at least one photographer at that photography exhibit that said he'd been printing with the 3880 for 2 years and was just now getting to the point that he was finally changing out the last of the original cartridges that came with his 3880. I have seen that comment from a number of reviewers of the printer.I did the math myself by looking at information from Red River Papers and other sources that sell ink & paper for the Epson 3880 and determined that the cost of the 3880 actually made more financial sense than the R3000 & smaller printers solely on the basis of the cartridge prices. The cost of ink per ml on the 3880 is about half or less than the cost per ml in the smaller cartridges of other models -- and you'll end up changing them less frequently on the 3880. I determined that I would have to buy roughly 2 complete sets of R3000 ink cartridges along with the R3000 to have the same amount of ink that comes with the R3880. If you do that apples-to-apples intial acquisition comparison, the seeminly lower startup cost of the R3000 gets to be about almost the same as the 3880. But after that first batch, everything is half-the-cost on the 3880.So my philosopy was that if I'm going to buy a 17x22 printer with the intent of printing lots of photographs, then I should look at the financials of printing in that context of intended volume & usage. I was buying a printer to print much more than just 3 batches worth of ink, and that being the case, it really doesn't make sense to buy models smaller than the 3880. The price per print for ink is ALWAYS going to be about half that of the R3000. So if you're buying a printer just to print a few hundred prints EVER, then maybe the R3000 is a better choice. But if you plan to keep printing beyond a few hundred or for years & years, the R3880 will most likely hold up better to the volume and will definitely cost you less per print from the outset.I got mine with one of the frequent Epson rebate programs. I believe that there's another one going right now that offers $300 for purchases between now & end of 2012. You will not regret it!

I have been using this printer since I first bought it back in 2004. I originally bought it strictly for the cd/dvd printing feature it offered. I have always been pro-HP when it comes to printers, and was a little leary about this printer, especially when I think back to the old dragons Epson had put out (the dot-matrix printers that took forever to go through all their bells and whistles before even being able to start printing on them), but for the price thought I would give it a try. I am still using this printer to this day!! I find the photo quality on my discs to be great, and even the text quality is good. I see everyone complaining about the ink usage for this printer and so-called "expensive" costs. I have only used Epson ink cartridges in this printer, find they allow you to use them to the absolute end (unlike HP in that respect), and have gotten great useage out of the cartridges. I find the Epson actually uses about the same amount of ink as my HP printers and costs about the same or are within a dollar or two of each other. The only problem I have had with this printer is the cd/dvd tray. You have to be very careful with the tray and make sure the plastic lead-in strip at the top of the tray does NOT get bent. Mine unfortunately did as some point in time, however, instead of replacing it, I found that a small strip of strong mailing/packing tape across it and cut to the same grooves solved the problem. I have replaced the tape several times, but it still keeps on working for me. I also find you have to give the tray a little nudge when it first goes in to be printed, and then when it is finished, if you just lightly hold it so it finishes exiting, you have no problems. Tedious? Yes, but worth it!I have never had a problem with clogged jets on this machine. Overall, this printer is great for printing cd/dvd's and I have used it to print documents when I ran out of ink for my HP's and was up against the wall with time constraints and couldn't immediately run out and get more ink for the HP's and found the quality to be just as good. While I do not use this printer on a daily or regular basis, I have printed several thousand discs with it. It may sit unused for months at a time before being used again and used heavily when it is put back in use and still no problems with clogging jets or even dried out cartridges.I have only twice called customer service over the years of owning it and both times I was met with a very knowledgeable and friendly person who was willing to help even though this printer is long out of it's warranty period. The firt time was concerning the Epson Print CD software (I couldn't find my disc after doing an upgrade of my computer's OS, and the second (most recent) which was just a couple days ago, was concerning the disc tray because of that plastic strip. I thought I would see if I could buy a replacement for it. They did give me a name/phone number/web address for a vendor who sells them (for only $6.99), but after speaking with the representative (and he also agreeing with what I had been doing to fix the problem), thought against it for now. I hope I continue to get a few more years usage out of this great printer!!
