I've had 3 printers in my life, a canon, hp, and now this- this by far is the worst- and usually I have to "do something" to mess up, but this printer practically volunteers to go awol. The cartridges dry up so quick, and filling them is a hassle and you need special little plugs and if you don't do that you have to buy expensive new cartridges. It seems like "hey, this is a decent priced printer" but really the prices of the cartridges is how they cheat you. And you even have to buy a "resetter" which is like 20 bucks itself to tell the printer "hey, I'm dry!" or they won't even let you use the cartridge. WHAT A HASSLE! You'd save more money and time printing at the library.

My last three printers have been Epson printers. I started with a C82 which had printhead problems after less than a year. They replaced that one with another C82 that had the same problem within several months. That one was replaced by a C86. Now just over a year later, I'm having the exact same problem with the C86. Epson obviously has a flaw in their manufacturing processes for this line of printers. I have had an HP for work for the past 2 years and have never had a single problem with it. I'll never buy another Epson product. Not to mention the fact that their proprietary "DuraBrite" inks are ridiculously expensive and don't last long at all!!!

I purchased this Epson printer because I have an Epson scanner and love it. I liked the idea of individual ink cartridges and waterproof ink. I have a lot of old black and white photos to print so I thought Epson would be a good choice. For two weeks I tried every photo program I had and every setting on the printer to try to make the photos look good. There is no greyscale setting on the printer. My black and white photos had either a green tint or a red tint...depending on the settings I used. And the color photos were not as vibrant as the ones printed on the HP printer I just gave up.I e-mailed the Epson tech department for help. They were very responsive and tried to help, but no matter what I tried, my photos were still bad quality. I also called the Epson service department. They also tried to help. I tried everything they suggested and there was no improvement in the quality of the photos. I finally gave the Epson to my husband who doesn't do photos and reclaimed my HP Photosmart. The Epson text printing is great...photos not so great.

Wow. Just, wow. Finally, a decent black and white print. In fact, it's not only decent, it's stunning. It's not only stunning, it will last 100 years like a traditional photo. Let me tell you how.If you're into digital photography, eventually you will wander into black and white print territory. You will discover what we all do, that the latest/greatest printer that you bought makes absolutely horrid black and white prints. Stands to reason, you have all color cartridges. Trying to make clean grays, free of nasty color casts, out of cyan, magenta, yellow and black is all but impossible. Forget about it.You jump on-line to do some homework. You learn making B&W prints is expensive and involved. You need Photoshop. You need expensive "RIP" software that's specific for your printer.Enter a company called MIS Inks. They make black and white ink cartridges that replace the C,Y,M,K for this printer, the C82, abd C84 Epson Stylus printers. Simply replace the color Durabrites with these cartridges when you want a black and white print. (It's recommended you print a page of something colorful, like a graph to clear the printheads of the color inks. Google "MIS Inks" for the link for these inks. Look for their "EZ Black and White" line. Read up, as you need different cartridges depeding on your printer, and different blacks for glossy or matte paper.) Out pops an absolutely stunning black and white print. The C86 is also one of the best text printers. As far as some of the issues others are having, can't say this has been my experience. I haven't had it long but it's thus far never clogged and paper never jams.I now have two printers, both Epsons. The R200 is for six color photos made with dye-based inks, direct printing on CDs, and color text/graphics printing. The C86 is for making black and white photos, and straight black text printer. Not including inks, the price paid for all this capability (both printers)? About $150. Needless to say, I'm in the Epson camp.

I have used the Epson C86 through one cartridge change. The printer has performed well, no cause for concern. I should eventually get it for free after a mail in rebate on a camera+printer bundle. What I'm writing to report is something I haven't seen reported much - its printer dialog interface, and ease (or lack thereof) of ink refill. There are 2 important features missing on this printer: 1. The ability to print banners. I was looking forward to printing out some panoramas since it prints photo quality. 2. It lacks the ability to set auto-on from printer preferences. The Canon bubblejet I had before this one that I used for almost 3 yrs had a checkbox in its dialog so I didn't need to turn on the printer for jobs. It would turn itself on upon receiving a feed, print, then turn off in 5 min or so. The Epson C86 does not have that feature. Either I must leave it on all the time or must turn it on and off manually all the time. Now about ink refill. I've gradually become a believer in refills. Although this printer has separate color cartridges, each cart is 5-10ml which is quite little, and the cartridge "looks" pretty thin. Now at 10 bux plus for each new, I REALLY want to refill the ones I have. Well, I learned that Epson cartridges host a chip that counts the number of droplets used and signals to the printer to stop using it after certain number of droplets.[...]It totally seems like Epson would like to extort the money from its customers to buy new, thin, low -capacity cartridges all the time. Just no consideration for user's money and the environment. OK so now you can buy resetters (a device the size of a mini-snickers bar) that will reset the chip count. Great, so I get one for about 8 dollars. The woes don't end here. It turns out the fill hole also points to the ground so if you fill it, you better have a great way to seal, which I haven't discovered yet.So for now, I'm going to try refilling its cartridges. And I think I will be doing some research into refilling potential for each printer I buy from here on out.

I have been a loyal Epson ink jet user for many years. In addition to the C84, we currently operate a C42 and a photo stylus 2200. All 3 printers are used heavily for various job types. Only the C84 is problematic. Two weeks ago, the printer stopped printing black. Thinking it was out of ink, I replaced the cartridge ($). This did not fix the issue, so I called Epson, who charged me to talk to them ($$). I was advised to run several print head cleanings, and to shut the printer off overnight. Still no fix. I was then advised to drop the printer off to a "local" tech, who charged me $45 just to do a diagnostic ($$$). After a week in the shop, I was told the print head is damaged, and that it will be cheaper to buy a new printer than to repair this one ($$$$). I will replace this printer - you can be sure it won't be with an Epson.

I do not recommend this printer for any type of use. Within 3 months of ownership, the printer head began leaving horizontal lines about every 3 inches down the page. Multiple cleanings and new Epson print cartridges did nothing to solve the problem. I never used generic cartridges, so I am very disappointed that these VERY expensive cartridges do not feed properly through the printer head.I am going to try a Canon or HP next time. In the past, I got rid of my Canon and HP printer because the resolutions improved in the new printer technolgies available in the marketplace, not because my Canon or HP stopped printing properly. I can't say the same for this Epson.

This is my 4th Epson and you would think I would have learned my lesson by now. Each newer model is more unreliable than the previous. I used to be able to get a few good years of serice from an Epson. With the R300, I barely got 1 year of service before the print quality started going down hill. After doing several "head cleaning" cycles, it got even worse. To service it at this point will be as expensive as buying new and it is no longer under warranty...thanks for nothing Epson! I gave up on color. Bought a Brother laser printer, and have never been happier!

the print head clogs easily. the first time(s) were within the warranty, so i got an exchange, but the problem recurred in the replacement as well and now the warranty is over.ink cartidges are expensive and you can't self-refill. (there's a chip you've got to reset). it boasts 4 separate ink wells so that you don't have to replace all the ink when one goes dry, but you end up spending so much time cleaning hte heads, that drains all the ink wells as well.its frustrating that i'm going to waste landfill space with this thing.

I've owned this EPSON R300 for about a year....NEVER had any problems!!! It does a great job on photos and everything else as well.I do a LOT of digital photography...loads of flora and fauna close-ups....and oodles of distant landscape shots...and everything in between!!! The R300 does an absolutely astounding job of putting these pix on to paper!!!I've also have a Canon and a Lexmark hooked to the same computer, and they don't even come close to the clarity and quality of the EPSON R300.This is my fourth Epson printer. I upgraded from the first one, wore out the second one, and currently have the third one on a different computer. The EPSON R300 is quick, quiet, and has great print quality!!! What's NOT to like?!(P.S. - I'm not loyal to any one brand...I use whatever I find to be the best for the job at hand! My CANON does marvelous on docs and such as that...but doesn't do pix very well! And the Lexmark...simply put....I WON'T own another one!!!

This printer worked fine for the first set of ink cartridges. The black cartridge ran out of ink first. Upon replacing the black cartridge the heads clogged. Unclogging the heads used up half of the "high capacity" ink cartridge. It also used up the remainder of the color cartridges since you can't select which head to clean. Now that the heads are clean I have to replace all four cartridges to finally print something. I think not. Setting this piece of junk out on the curb.

I have been using this printer for DVD covers now for 2 months and can advise every one looking to replace the paper covers with ink to get this printer without any worry. I have done a minimum of 150 covers with one set of ink..the yellow and the black will let go first. That comes out to .40 cents a dvd...so it cost less than the paper that cost.20 and the price of the ink The result are just great and the software is outstanding. The problem that was mentioned in several reviews about the plastic carrier has been replaced and it works real well and i can see that the desing is going to never break

I have one of these printers at home and work. At work, we have the C86 for printing marketing material. After the C86 had printed around 15,000 pages in the space of 13-months, we replaced it, (as the print heads were clogging up too often)with another C86. What more can you ask from a budget inkjet? I use the printer for all kinds of documents. It is an absolutely fantastic printer, and suprisingly cheap to run. With reference to other reviews - I had my C86 turned off for two months while I was on holiday, when I returned, it carried on printing in perfect quality - not even 1 clean required.Buy one of these printers; before they stop making them.

Like many other reviewers, I was quite happy with my inexpensive C84 for about a year and a half, until the print heads got clogged with ink and failed. Both the black and yellow inks simply stopped printing one day, and no amount of cleaning or replacing cartridges helped. I finally contacted Epson support to see if there was anything else I could do, but repairs would have been more expensive than a new printer. Given the rather alarming number of folks who have had this problem, I'd say it's a design flaw. I replaced the C84 with an Epson CX4800--now I'm crossing my fingers and hoping for the best. In sum, stay away unless you can find an inexpensive unit and don't mind chucking it when it breaks down.

I would rate this ZERO stars if possible. We got this free as well from an IBook purchase, and since it worked with the Airport express, seemed like a good solution. It literally worked for TWO DAYS PAST THE WARRANTY date, if you can believe that! Like all the others on this post, I purchased MULTIPLE sets of ink thinking it was the ink itself. Tech support advised to clean the heads--no help. I think I've tried that procedure about 100 times so far, to no avail. After spending about 200 bucks in ink packages, the only color that prints is blue. Nothing else. Do not waste the money on this. Even if it is free, it is a huge waste of money because it runs out of ink so quickly--in the year it DID work, I think I replaced the ink about eight times entirely. Really bad piece of equipment.

Wonder why you're getting an extra featured printer so cheap? You're probalby only getting reject half filled ink tanks included, and look at the cost of new cartridges and consider how frequently you may need to buy them unless you hardly ever do any printing.People are fed up with printer manufacturers having cartridges with sponges that don't refill well (Lexmark), or smart chips that prevent refills (Epson), not to mention HP's methods including "Expired Cartridge" messages, etc. If we don't, as consumers, vote "no" by not buying these printers and sending letters to CEO's we'll just get more of the same scamming.I was excited to read about Canon Pixma IP3000 & up models with separate ink-tanks & no smart chips. Examining all the Pixma models at a local store I noticed this extra pull down tray in the front-middle. After full investigation, it's a disabled/never will work CD/DVD printing bay. Yet the same models in Europe have a working CD/DVD print bay. The USA price does not reflect the non-functional CD/DVD printing either. So I will (doubtedly) try to get a Euro model or wait for Canon to release USA models that are fully functional. I may end up temporarly buying the Epson R200 but I feel like I should be ashamed supporting Epson and their smart-chip scam. There is a chip resetter device (avg. $10 to $15) but I don't know if it works well yet. Forget Lexmark unless you have money to burn on cartridges. And there's concern about Epson printers wasting/spraying ink all over the inside (read all R200 reviews) that soon causes problems (dries solid/hard). The Canon has ink tanks with no smart chips, look easily refillable, and their print head underneath the ink tanks holder is also removable (i.e. replacable, but I don't know what that will cost. If other printers' print heads go you pretty much resort to trashing the printer). It looks like the Pixma line is leading the way in printing and cartridge technology. Canon: Kudos for heading a little more environmetally responsible with the Pixmas obviously designed for long-term usage in mind but PLEASE get those CD/DVD printing trays functional soon!

I purchased the c86 as a replacement for my old, dysfunctional C84. I have found that printing more than a few pages, be they photos or documents, causes banding. I've wasted what seems like gallons of ink just cleaning and re-cleaning the heads in an attempt to eliminate horizontal lines. And then I waste more time and paper trying to get rid of the ink globs that show up on the print outs. I'm researching a for a new printer now, I think I'll see what HP can offer me this time around.*I have found that optimal photo print performance is achieved with the DURABrite inks and (for my uses) DURABright 4x6 Glossy Photo Paper.

The ink consumption in this printer is beyond unacceptible. I am CONSTANTLY replacing ink cartridges and this is a very low-use printer. In my opinion, what many of the printer manufacturers are now doing to FORCE excessive ink consumption is borderline criminal. Printer prices have plummeted, but ink consumption is out of control. It's a shell game at its finest, and Epson and HP are leading the way. Had I known how often I'd have to replace the cartridges in this printer, I would have never purchased it.

To the guy in Rhode Island and those who still think it's a manufacturers "obligation" to include a USB cable "in the box" think again, it costs money and that added expense is passed onto you in this or any other printer on the market sub $400 in most cases. Don't be naive, you are getting a great price but this price is on hardware only, and if your lucky more than just starter inks! Most people get out once in awhile and understand this, however if your a recluse then I guess you haven't seen the light of day in over 10 years so figure it out and wise up! "All epson printers with the exceptions being the R1800, R2400 series do not include cables only a Firewire IEEE in those models period. Spend the stinking $25 and get a cable you whiner.

I just wish it was more compact but I knew its size when I bought it. Don't be swayed by a few disgruntled people, they are the ones who usually write in, it's a great machine.

Here we go....my second Amazon review for a product that deserves it.I was looking for an inexpensive, high-quality printer that was capable of printing more than just the normal 4x6 up to letter size prints and so decided to see what was out there before shelling out the money to buy a wide-format printer such as the Canon 9900. The R300 fit this bill....one thing that immediately impressed me about this printer was the ability to handle panoramic prints up to 44".First snag....the colors that I saw on my first test prints were way off. Even after adjusting, I couldn't get anything close to what I wanted; everything was way too saturated and dark. There was a heavy tilt toward the magenta colors. I returned the first one and decided to give it another try. After running into the same problem I switched from MS Picture Manager and the included software to Picasa, and BAM! what a difference! Colors were tack on and quality was great.Panoramas are where this printer really shines. After ordering a roll of panoramic paper from Epson (8.3"x32.8') I discovered I also needed to get a high-tension spindle. I didn't want to shell out the $140 for the spindle so I put on some plastic gloves, asked my wife to hit the print key and tried to stay still for 10 minutes. Boy was it worth the wait. The panoramic I printed was in one word: AMAZING. I have already gotten multiple offers to buy it from my co-workers.Pros:-Great quality with the right software-Easy to use-Don't "really" need a spindle as long as you can be a human spindle-Great Panoramas-Paper handlingCons:-I could literally see the ink levels go down as it was printing!-Color levels were WAY off with the supplied software as well as with MS Picture Manager. Picasa fixed this.-Ink is mighty expensive. I think I will experiment with off-brand inksTo summarize, I haven't had this printer for very long, but for my needs, it seems to be doing the trick. I will be putting this printer to the test and so far it has been a great buy for me. Bottom line: I am saving $50 per print for some of my panoramas. by printing on this printer
