Same problem listed by others. Shortly after a year, the yellow just suddenly stopped working completely. No cleaning solution or similar remedies have worked. It printed great pictures UNTIL this happened.

We have had the printer for almost a year and have yet to have a good printing experience on a CD or DVD. It jams, it flashes lights, it gets confused, we have to restart it/reset the tray and nudge it this way and that way, open and shut the lid, etc. Forget it. i'm sorry that we ever bought it and would not recommend it to anyone. We have been using it for printing demo DVDs for clients and you can kiss your Fedex deadline goodbye if you have to print at the last minute. Allow 20 minutes for playing with each disk. This machine is a disaster for that function.

I purchased an Epson C84 printer when I bought my Mac G5. The printer was "free" with rebate which is the good news. Previously I've only owned HP Deskjets so I thought I understood how all inkjets behaved. Not so.First, the Epson will run you poor due to incredible ink usage. Expect to replace the black ink cartridge every two months with typical printing. Also, the printer uses a finite amount of color ink even if you print exclusively in black and white. The printer needs to do this in order to keep the nozzles flowing. Mine haven't yet clogged but from reviews posted here and elsewhere it is only a matter of time. You'll need to replace the color cartridge about every 6 months. More frequently if you print photos.Second, you MUST keep spare ink on hand. If you forget and let a cartidge (any color) run out the printer shuts down and you cannot print! At least with my previous experience with HPs you could "limp home" and print an off color or "streaky" black and white document.I've owned this printer for one year and have spent about $200 on ink! The black cartridge just ran out again and it's the end for this money pit. I'll be selling it at a garage sale next week.

I bought this printer about two years ago or less. I just bought three new ink cartridges and put them all in. It wouldn't print in color. I tried cleaning the heads but it still didn't work. I asked an Epson representative at Best Buy what he thought he said he never heard of it doing that. LIAR!!! The ink sucks your wallet dry!! I hardly ever print anything and it seems like it is always running empty very quickly. I take the cartridges out and it seems like there is alot of ink left. It's junk. Don't buy it!!

I appears after two years I am also in the clogged print head club. I just bought $65 worth of new ink only to use it all up trying to unclog the print head. I am so disgusted that I cannot wait to throw this piece of crap into the trash. What a complete waste of money this thing was.Hopefully some files a class action lawsuit against Epson for ripping off so many customers. I will never buy another Epson!!On a possitive note when it did print I thought it did a great job.

This printer worked beautifully out of the box, and it was cool that Epson even included some pot paper to test out with it. Then, about three months after buying it, the yellow ink head got clogged. After a quick google search for the root of the problem, I found out that this is an extremely common problem with this and other Epson printers. I contacted Epson since my printer is still under warranty, and they informed me that I would have to either get it fixed myself, or buy a new one.

I purchased the C84 in June 2004. It stopped working October 2005. I did not use the printer very much, but sure bought a lot of ink. In the last battle with the printer, after black ink was low, replaced with new cartridge, but then black ink stopped working altogether, followed shortly thereafter by all blank pages, even after 5 nozzle cleanings. Decided to replace color cartridges even though they weren't completely empty. Still got nothing but blank pages. Tried cleaning 3 more times, but nothing but blank pages.

I think this is a conspiracy; the printer stops working after a very short period of time, with very light usage. The customer thinks well it must just be out of ink, but after spending a small fortune on new ink cartridges, and lots of time going through the troubleshooting steps, it still doesn't print. Save yourself headaches, stress, and anger; don't buy this printer!

I have wasted much of two weekends trying to get this sucker to run on a network with two Macs (one wired, one wireless) and a PC (wireless) and a Buffalo print server box. Oh, I had the PC printing in minutes. It's the Mac part that has been the nightmare. The "geniuses" at the Apple Store were of no use whatsoever -- their only solution was to buy a brand new Apple base station, and from what I've learned since, I have no confidence that this would work either. I've written to the black hole known as Epson tech support, and have heard NOTHING back.The problem is that there are no Mac OS drivers from Epson for the R300 allowing access across a network. In doing an "Add Printer" on Mac OS X, you look at the popup list of printer drivers, and yup, there's HP, and Canon, and even Lexmark, but no Epson. There's "ESP", which I learn stands for a third party entity, and there are some highly cryptic generic Epson options there. But so far, I've only gotten Postscript commands, junk, or nothing at all to be emitted. I found a web reference to some guy who managed to get the thing working, sort of, in some kind of kluidgy way, but now he was down to tweaking deep-innards settings to keep printouts from looking not-quite-so-horrible. Mac users, be warned!

I bought the Epson Stylus C84 about two years ago. It worked well printing text. It was OK, not spectacular, for printing photos. The aspect of this printer I dislike is that it dies in an expensive way. It starts to leave missing streaks in the print. Changing the inks costs much ($36 for the black cartridge alone). At first, changing the ink cartridge works well. You change the cartridge and the printer works well again for awhile. Then, the empty streaks start to appear again and you change the cartridge again. No improvement! You can follow the online help suggestions and they tell you to check alignment and do head cleanings. No improvement. If you call customer support, they want $9.95 just to talk to you. In the end, you get stuck with a printer that is prohibitively expensive to repair and you have a pile of useless new expensive ink cartrigdes. I find this frustrating.

Warning - This printer comes with ink cartridges that are only about 2% full of ink and the second any one of them runs out the printer WILL NOT PRINT AT ALL. I went and bought a new black and it will not print until you buy ALL of the color cartridges. What a rip-off!

I had generally been very happy with this printer, until I discovered that it won't print in black & white unless your three color cartridges are also filled. There is no override for this "feature". So if you need to print something urgently and you are out of, say, yellow ink, you have to go to the store to buy yellow ink before you can print with the black only. A great ploy by Epson to keep you buying their ink...

this is the 3rd epson model i've purchased. the first one lasted about a year, the second one 1.5 years, and this latest one, the stylus C86 lasted a few months. i give kudos to epson customer service. they are truly helpful and sent me a replacement right away. unfortunately, the replacement turned out to be a lemon. after a few weeks, the yellow print head got clogged. i did 4 consecutive head cleanings, changed the ink cartridge, still no yellow ink. i called epson again. i wanted a refund but it seems they don't do that over there. they are going to overnight me a new C86. maybe it's just my bad luck that i keep getting the lemons. like i said, great customer service, but poor product.

The Epson C86 is a very good home printer. I have had this printer for almost a year now and have had no problems with it what-so-ever. Changing ink cartriges is very easy and no tme consuming at all.I use this printer mainly for home/school use. Being a Graduate student I am often print term papers and this printer can handle my 30+ pages very easily. Print speed is the fastest I have had for a home printer, I believe the box says something like 22 pages per minute for text pages. Not too shabby at all.One not of caution. If you do get this printer I highly suggest spending the little bit extra and getting the high density cartrudges as the regular ones seem to dry up rather quickly.

We bought one of these back in December of 2003 and were very happy with the the quality when printing out photos. Black only text also looked great when we started buying the nice paper. In June of 2004, it stopped printing the Magenta color so we had it replaced under warranty from Epson. The replacement worked great as well....until July of 2005. It again stopped printing Magenta. After running SEVERAL cleaning cycles and replacing all the ink cartridges, it still does not print Magenta which means everything we print looks blue/green. Not good for pictures of our new baby. Epson will not replace this one because their warranty only covers from one year of the date of original purchase. I would recommend this great little printer if you are ok with buying a new printer every year or buying an extended warranty.

Yeah,,this seems like a great printer until it jsut stops printing and you buy new cartridges thinking that your surrent ones are out. Nope, the printer jsut stops working and is dead. Never buy and Epson again.

I have never had a printer that runs out of ink so quickly! The replacement cartridges are ridiculously expensive. Next time I buy a printer, I will make sure the ink replacement is affordable. Like some Lexmark printers that let you inject a pack of ink into the cartridge without having to replace the cartridge itself.

I was sold on the Epson Stylus C84 while shopping for a printer. The other Epson I had for 1 year broke down. I also had to keep in mincd what would be compatable for my pc (another issue!). I do alot of print archieving and wanted quality prints. This seemed to be the most logical solution for it's price and ability. It also had a double black catridge to last longer than the slim ones, I was told. Like one of the reviewers here wrote, you cannot use the black only when printing. It does take aproximately 6 months before "the curse" takes place. Ink not evenly flowing and clogging up the printer with no way to clean and fix it. It becomes tempermental and prints when It wants to print! But most importantly, it costs approximately $60 to replace the ink every 4-6 weeks! It would be cheaper to buy an Epson printer every time the ink ran out instead of replacing the ink! And by the way the Epson printers work, you would also be better off! Not sure which printer I will buy next, but Epson lost it's chance. The company could send me one for free and I would return it.

Looks like my C84 has finally bit the dust too. Doubt if anyone else is even coming here any longer to read reviews on this model, but after reading all these, and now, my own experience, I'm done with Epson.

I bought this pack thru Amazon and after installing them in my CX5400 I got an error message on the printer saying there was a problem with the cartridges. I took out what I had just installed and found them to be TO3...series when my CX5400 takes a TO42...series. I now have three openned, new, but, unusable cartridges. Anyone want them?

Photos - In the past, I used the Ophoto service to print digital photos - but not anymore. Ofoto did a good job, but this printer is just as good, or maybe better. No one can believe my photos don't come from film developed at a photo shop. I've printed 8x10s on this printer that look better than 35mm enlargements. (I use a Sony cyber shot 5 megapixel camera, which I also highly recommend) You must use the right paper (glossy photo paper) for quality photo prints. You can use regular paper to run off disposable type images (for the kids school projects etc..). When you use regular paper the images are still crisp, but they tend to fade in a few weeksText - I also have an HP laser printer. The text from the Epson is just as crisp.There is a BIG drawback to this printer - the INK. The printer doesn't work at all when one color runs out. When the low ink (red) light comes on, you should check to see which color is running low. You can replace just the color that runs out, which is nice. But replacing all of the ink is more expensive than the printer! I paid $60 for the printer [...] and I just bought new ink for about $75! I only needed one color, but I figured I should buy them all at one time since 2 other colors were running low.Overall, this is a great printer - but the ink is so expensive you need to watch that the kids don't "waste" it.

I bought the C86 because it uses the same ink cartridges as the C84 I have but which pooped out after only 18 months of use and left me with unused cartridges - not cheap to throw away. It's the same printer as far as I can tell. For $95 w/S&H (less $20 rebate) I guess anything working over a year is doing OK. Prints fine, nice features, decent photos, compact design - good for basic home use. Amazon delivered mucho pronto!

Bought this printer a month ago and am impressed. Big difference in quality of photos between my old Epson and this one. It's quiet, prints fast, and is easy to use.
