As others have pointed out: Good News is that it prints handsomely when it works. All the rest is bad news. Incredibly poor user interface with tiny text on a dim LCD screen and buttons with labels like "1" and "2". Wouldn't matter except you'll spend more time working on the dang thing than printing with it. Inkjets clogged every other day, then finally one clogged up permanently. I wasn't at all sad because it was such an unpleasant printer to work with. Paper jams, paper tray falling off, slow boot-up, consumed ink like a drunken sailor. And What Ink! $50 a pop. Lasted about a year. I never even tried the roll paper option, but you could tell that would be a bear to get working right. My previous Epson printer had been OK, but I threw this one into the garbage bin with a particular glee. A very frustrating machine. I'm trying a Canon next time. With NO LCD DISPLAY.

Eat too much ink. Can't be used for only black and white text priting even if there's plenty of black ink. You must have all colored ink at least at minimum in order to print merely black text. Won't buy it. It will eat your budget with a constant purchase of ink.

I received a C84 as a warranty replacement for my C82...which was also junk. The C82 worked fine for a little under a year. After spending more than it was worth on ink cartridges to clear a plugged head, Epson sent me one of the C84's. Immediately after setting it up and printing a test page, the paper started jamming. Epson tech support shipped yet another replacement. Printer #3 refuses to recognize two of the Epson supplied ink cartridges. Trying cartridges left from printer #2 proved the same issue. Tech supports response...send me two more cartridges. If this does not work, they will send me printer #4. Today, my cartridges arrived. I opened the package and found one, and one on backorder. I tried the one...same issue.During a season when printing family photos is essential, I have spent this one tearing my desk apart replacing printers, and repackaging/returning them.My review?? The Epson C84 is cheap junk just as it's predecesor, the C82. Tech support is awful. They blindly follow a script and are not allowed to use their own intelligence to make a good decision. Buy at your own risk.I will not be requesting printer #4. I have dealt with tech support far too much on their product already. I will be shopping with their competitors.

possibly the worst device I have ever owned, bought it 12 months ago when I had problems with my previous printer and have resorted to getting my old printer working in preference to the constant head cleaning and buying of new ink! When you do get pictures to print they are of a very high quality but I have now given up trying.

I've been on the phone with customer service many times for this printer. I was even sent a replacement printer, but both printers have the same problem. If you leave it on for more than five minutes, it will require at least two head cleanings, wasting expensive ink, in order to print properly.

I'm happy with the Epson Stylus R200 Photo Printer. Installation was straightforward on Windows2000, and Mac OS X can see the printer via Windows printer sharing with no problem. Colors are accurate. Text is sharp. The R200 doesn't have the useless features of the more expensive printers: Clutter for working with digital photo images directly on the camera. Why would ANYONE do that when a computer is sitting right there, just waiting to catalog, crop, and color correct your photos? Instead of a useless 2" LCD display, the R200 expects you to use your computer like God, Gates, & Jobs intended.I wanted to get a printer that could print on CDs because I'd seen the adhesive labels come loose after a few years, particularly in a hot car, and I don't want to gum up an expensive car MP3-CD player. I figured the printer would pay for itself in adhesive labels I didn't have to buy.The downside: you can't just print on the stack of CD-Rs and DVD-Rs you happen to have lying around: the ink will beed up, never dry, and will smudge off at the slightest touch. If you buy the more expensive "printable" blank media, which looks like it has been painted with white-out, and has a slightly matte finish, then the print quality on the CDs is terrific. Each of the 6 inks costs about $13, except for black, which is $17. (Epson brand ink cartridges.) You can buy the colors individually, so if you keep one set of spares, you can stock up as each runs out. You get one set in the package with the printer. Like they say, the first one is free.

I was hesitant to buy this printer because of some comments I'd read at various web sites. For example, I'd read that the "DuraBrite" inks "can't do glossy". The CNET review, although praising this printer for all-around performance, doesn't give the C84 highest marks for photo quality and mentions visible dithering in pictures. After considering the printer's low cost, the low cost of ink for it, and the advantages of its pigment-based DuraBrite inks (water proof and long-lasting), I decided to buy one for photo printing. I also considered the higher resolution of the C84 compared to Epson photo printers selling for about the same price, and I took a chance that the higher resolution would compensate for the lack of the extra color cartridges "photo printers" use.I think I made a great decision. The photos from this printer look fantastic. While it's true that you can't get >>super<< glossy prints from it, the prints on glossy photo paper aren't matte. I'd call them "semigloss", and I like them. I don't see any dithering problem, either. So far, I've used the C84 to print on Ritz Camera brand "Professional Photo Glossy Ink Jet Paper" (similar to Epson Premium Glossy Photo Paper), "Epson Photo Quality Ink Jet Paper", plain paper, and the 2 sheets of "Epson DuraBrite Ink Glossy Photo Paper" included with the printer. Results are excellent on all these media - even plain paper. I haven't seen better results on plain paper. I even printed on the back side of the Epson Ink Jet Paper, and - I kid you not - it looks better there than on the front where you're supposed to print. The very slightly yellow back side adds warmth to the photo. There's no bleed through, so you can print on both sides of the Epson paper. I didn't try this on the plain copier paper because it was thinner, and you could see through the back too easily. I stuck a plain paper print under the water faucet and soaked it. As advertised, that had no effect on the ink. After drying, the paper was wrinkled, but the image looked fine.I always put my best pictures in clear archival sheet protectors, and, behind such glossy plastic or glass, you'd never know the DuraBrite prints were not super glossy. Advertisements say the C84 can do border-free printing on "8x10" paper. I was pleased to discover that it can do so on 8-1/2"x11" photo paper as well. It can NOT print border-free on plain paper or ink jet paper - apparently, border-free printing requires thick paper - but it does get much closer to the edges than my old printer, leaving about 3/16" borders on the short edges and 1/8" borders on the long edges.I'm a happy camper. Don't be afraid to buy this printer for photo-printing.

What I thought was the best printer on the market for high-volume, home use was last year?s Epson C82. When Epson released this model, the third in the C80 series, I was amazed. The Durabrite Ink that Epson has boasted in these units has been improved for the new model. It sticks much better to photo paper than the previous incarnation. It is still just as long lasting and it is still waterproof!Perfect for the home office, the C80 series has always been used for high volume work on plain paper. The resolution has been very impressive and the output has been top notch. It is amazing how much ink can be stacked on a plain page of paper and not bleed through to the other side. These are all features of the Durabrite ink. While these features are still present in the C84, the fact that it can print pictures on something other than plain paper is impressive too. The C82 always printed the best pictures on plain and matte paper I had ever seen, but it did not react well with many photo papers until Epson came up with a paper specifically for Durabrite. It still wasn?t as good as printers meant for photography on glossy. The C84 works on a 4-tank ink system. The black tank is rather large. Consumer reports rates this between 3 and 4 cents per page in black and white, well under 10 cents a page for color. This beats almost all of the printers in its price class. If you are looking for a printer used for photo printing primarily, look toward the Epson R300 or R200, both 6 ink printers. If you are looking for a general printer that will print lots and lots for not a lot of money, and can print photos on the side, this is your printer. It really is good at what it does.epc

Beware of Epson printers! They get good magazine reviews and that's not surprising -- they are a nice compromise between fast, quality text printing and photo printing. They're not the best at either task but they do a decent job of both, and you can't beat the price. They're decent printers for as long as they last, which isn't very long.Unfortunately, you are unlikely to ever learn this from a magazine review where they have them for at most a few weeks. I've had two Epson printers in this series die on me (C80, and C82) in the last 2 years and have encountered serious issues with both printers after 4-5 months of light to moderate use. My C84 just kicked the bucket too.I've had the same issues that everyone else has with the printheads getting clogged and it taking many, many 'cleaning' passes before the printer works again. Each time this happens it burns about $20 worth of ink to fix it -- a very, very frustrating experience. I was startled to learn just how common this is. (I had several friends comment, "Oh, you too?" when I griped about the printer).(Note, you can improve things somewhat by always remembering to turn the printer off when you're not using it, but it's a band-aid, not a solution. Epson has serious issues with their print heads clogging).I called Epson today when my printer died and they wanted $10 to talk to me about it since it's now out of warranty.I can't stand it anymore. Goodbye, Epson, hello HP.

I spent months evaluating printers before picking the r300. I am very satisfied with my choice.I'll start out with the negatives. I have 4 criticisms about the printer: 1. The ink warning light comes on long before you are out of ink. 2. The default print settings appear to be designed around (dark) Adobe Gamma PC video 3. It is not designed to make borderless prints on 3rd party (Kodak) photo paper 4. While the CD printing produces gorgeous images, the ink will smear if it gets wet. Each of these issues is addressed very easily: 1. Don't change the ink cartridges until you really run out. 2. Use the advanced options to tweak the gamma, brightness and contrast and save the settings. Pros will make their own curves anyway. 3. Epson paper is better than anything else, but if you have to use other paper, you can "fake" it to get borderless prints with a custom paper setting. 4. Don't get the CD's wet. Excepting my own tests, I've never had the slightest smear on a CD that I printed from the Epson. Odds are that it'll never get wet, so don't worry.I should add that when I print on quality Epson and Kodak photo paper, the ink sets very well, so that it won't smear EVEN if it gets wet. I swear, my friend dropped one of my photo-prints in my fishtank and it looks just as good today as it did before it got wet.I've left prints in the sun in the back of my car. The r300 ink hasn't faded (on Kodak and Epson photo paper). The prints that I had from my old Epson and HP printers are very faded. This ink is durable!I've discovered that I can even get superior iron ons from crummy inkjet iron on paper when I use this printer. It's more than just the resolution. Where other inks tend to vaporize under the iron, producing fuzzy edges, the r300 images remain sharp.I've tested the output on this thing every way from Sunday and I haven't found the flaw yet.I tried the smart memory slots and I hooked up a USB zip drive and yes, it all works although I'll probably never use those features for more than contact sheets. The uncorrected prints were exceptionally good.Basically, what I'm saying is that the printer is vastly superior to any other inkjet that I've used in my home or at work -- and I do graphic design for a living. I find it hard to believe that anyone who tries an r300 won't fall in love with it.

Color prints from E mail or web pages are great, vivid and bright. However, it is extremely slow to print (ads claim up to 18ppm) The copy function sucks, on copy function; poor quality copies taking up to 2 minutes, the scan is fast but requires going into Applications and starting Epson Scan every time then to print out is forever.

I would feel better about my opinion if I could compare a full size pic from this printer to the much more expensive 960. With that said, I love this printer. Really, this is a machine with split personalities (as are many of the photo printers out there today).First, it is a printer attached to and used by your computer. There are a huge number of options once you hit the print button. So many, in fact, that it is easy to mess up the quality and/or colors in your print. But if you are patient, the results from this printer are amazing. Using premium glossy photo paper, I am amazed at how much the vibrant images seem to leap from the print. Really a stark contrast to the dull flat images of yesterday's inkjets. Print speed is okay, nothing wonderful. And, of course, don't use this printer to do regular docs. The quality is fine, but you're better off with one of the cheap (but fast and high quality) lasers out there, many about 100 clams.Second, this is an independent digital camera printer. It has built in slots for compactflash, memory stick, and mmc. This is a great contrast to those printers with just a pc card reader (then yoiu have to purchase the appriate adaptor for you camera). I might add that the printer serves as an all purpose memory card reader exceptionally well. Any card you put in appears as a removebale drive on your XP computer.I must say, the use of this printer independently is very limited right out of the box. That is becasue it lacks a preview monitor. Forget about being able to print the right picture from many on a memory card - impossible unless you waste time and ink and paper on an index page. Also, the fancy features for cropping, resizing, rotating, etc are worthless absent the monitor. Since the monitor must be purchased separately at a third of the cost of the printer itself (for a tiny, tiny monitor), this is problematic. While HP photo printers are more expensive, they generally have built-in monitors, making the price more even w/ this one. But, the good news is that I just ordered a monitor for an older epson photo printer of ... very, very cheap. I called Epson, which told me that the monitor will work fine, it is just white instead of black. Finally, I want to address the paper roller. Included is a roll of premium photo paper on a 4" wide roll. This is a GREAT idea. Since this printer can print all the way to the edges, you can produce high volume 4X6 prints easily. The printer will print them onto the roll paper and automatically cut them as it prints!! The result are prints that make my account with on-line digital photo processors obsolete. The only complaint is that the prints curl pretty substantially since they are on a roll.In sum, a great printer. Sturdier construction than Epson has produced in the past, exceptional quality prints. The status screen is hard to read if the printer is on a tall surface. The paper is actually kind of difficult to load correctly. The lack of a preview monitor (and its supplemental expense) makes many of the features unusable. But these are really just technical points. At the price this printer is going for, it is a must have for amateur photographers.

This is the upgrade to the C84. This isn't a huge advancement, and if you have the C84, don't bother. If however, you're looking for a new printer for home use, consider this one. It's marginally faster than it's predecessor (by 2-3 ppgs/minute), the print cost run the same (It uses the same catridges), and the resolution is the same (very high resolution). It uses individual color cartridges rather than the tricolor cartridge of HP's, which I find helps cut down on ink cost. The printer is fairly effeicient with it's ink, and I don't have to replace cartridges often. The input tray really doesn't hold many sheets; I find I have problems with feeding if more than 50-60 sheets are in it, but again, it's not meant as a high volume printer, so that's not a big deal.Like the C84, it prints very good photos and graphics, and excellent text. It's meant as an affordable all around, low through medium volume use (less than 500 sheets/month) printer. It excels in this role. If you, like me, print a fair amount of text (100 pages a month give or take) and some photos, but need high quality all around, this is a great printer for you, espically at the price. For your average home user, it's an excellent choice.

I just bought this printer/scanner today and I am very unhappy with the negative/slide scan capability. The scanner does not scan the entire negative nor the entire slide! When comparing a print from a scanned negative with a store-produced print, the right most 1/2 inch of the print is simply not there. Same deal with the slide. So this printer/scanner is being returned! I am now searching for a scanner that will actually scan the entire slide and negative.

I owned an Epson C-80 printer. I used it for a bit over two years and started having minor problems. I could keep it going, but I had to clean it too often. Also, I was going to have to buy ink cartridges soon. Finding it would cost me $80 if I were to try to have it fixed professionally, and considering the cost of the ink cartridges I needed, I decided to buy another printer. What did I buy? An Epson C-82. Why? I got the new printer for $49 because it was on special, and it contained $65 worth of ink. And I bought the same series Epson again because I like the quality of the pictures so much. I delight in running off pictures and sending to my family and friends, so I use it a great deal. I go through a lot of ink and photo paper, but it is worth every cent. I haven't seen another printer that I would take over my Epson. I believe my first one might have been a bit of a lemon, but not lemon enough to cause me to switch. If I needed another printer now, I would buy the Epson C-84. No question about it. And for that guy who uses generic ink, that's his problem. I buy my Epson cartridges, all four of them, for $48 at Sam's. I don't think the generic can be all that much cheaper.

I got this printer a few months ago to replace an HP Deskjet 880C. I got this one because it had a rebate that made it well-priced. It was fine for a while. Not good. Just ok. Printing was ok. It's not very fast. It takes a few seconds (sometimes about 20) before it starts printing and it makes some noises while "getting ready". Once it starts printing it is usually fast. But the total time it takes from pressing the print button to getting the page does not impress me.Well, today I was not impressed at all. I bought 4 new ink cartridges. They are quite expensive. After I replaced the cartridges, the printer wouldn't print. After doing some online reading, it seems I have, like many other people, a clogged printhead. I've run the printer through multiple cleaning cyclesbut it does not improve. I just spent a few hours and 65 bucks to turn up with a dead printer!!!My HP Deskjet 880C worked fine for years. The ink cost less. It printed as good as this "supposedly higher resolution" printer. It was quieter and faster.Well, that's my last Epson. My next printer will be an HP or Canon. My Lexmark experience was just as bad as my Epson experience.

This is a great printer for text and graphics. It is very fast, the text looks sharp and the colors are vibrant. This printer was an upgrade from an HP and the set of cartridges for the HP was over $100 while the epsons are about $50. Also the epson cartridges last far longer. Some people have mentioned that the first set of cartridges don't last and I have found this to be entirely untrue. I still have the orginal set (although black is almost out) and I have printed AT LEAST 350 pages. The ink is incrediblely resiliant. Even when printed on standard paper outdoor flyers just do not run. This is a good printer and is made even better by the very low price.

For the large amount of ink this printer seems to go through, it is gratifying that at least the print quality is more than acceptable. This is the printer I use in my home office, where I seldom print even five pages a day. I am not a novice at using printers, so it is a little bit of a surprise that the machine so frequently refuses to load a page for printing. I stand up, ruffle the paper AGAIN, reload, and usually it prints -- at least by the second or third time of going through these motions.Although my printing volume is very low, it is nice that the machine dependably produces "client worthy" documents, even when these include line drawings. Without question this is the best inexpensive printer I have used in that respect. The cost seems to be the speed at which ink cartridges run out. And it would be nice not to have to fuss so much about the paper.

This printer is wonderfully inexpensive and prints beautifully. However, the ink cartridges do not last very long (and the "recommended" ones are prohibitively expensive), and the cheap replacement ones you can find on the 'net don't work very well. The paper tray holds about 4 sheets at a time (okay, maybe I'm exaggerating....20 sheets). And the worst? The paper jams every third time you print, wasting time, paper, and ink. And now, for some reason, it won't load a sheet properly, so everything I print comes out lop-sided (and the sheet is bent on one side). I've used Epson and HP printers for years, and this is quite simply the poorest printer I've ever used. I will try to return it, but I've had it for several weeks now, and I don't know if they'll take it back.
