I have bought this printer about three years ago. It worked great on any photo paper I purchased. Just this passed summer they must of changed the ink, because I was getting cracked paint effect on the photos. I called Epson to find out that You can only use dura bright photo paper and nothing else. so the ink is not only costly, the paper is to. The quality is very good if not better.

This printer is over rated! I have owned my Epson 1270 for 3 years. I am lucky if I printed 200 - 8 x 10's since then. It uses up way too much ink and then you have to replace the color cartridge at $35.00 because you ran out of ink on 1 color. The inks do not dry and the surface of the print is always sticky. You cannot stack the photo's on top of each other, as they will bleed the color to the backs of the other pictures or stick together. The heads are constantly getting clogged up and you waste more ink trying to clean them using the utilities that came with the printer. It printed great for the first few months that I owned it(still had problems with the ink drying). You cannot use Hewlett Packard photo paper in this printer as the wheels that push the paper thru the printer, form little cut dots into the photo and they appear as white dots. The inks smell and the quality is not as good as newer printers on the market. I was very disappointed in this printer as it was over-rated by photographers. Maybe the 1280 is better but you will still have the issues with the ink not drying. The inks are horrible as they splatter all over the inside of the printer. The cleaning pads get soaked up with ink and get on the rollers and then you have marking on your prints. Plus I had issues with using it with my new computer that had Windows XP, such as communication errors and very poor print quality overall. I ended up replacing it with the Canon i860 for $150.00. See my review under the Canon i860. Canon knows how to make a printer. Their inks come out dry and clean. As far as the Epson's, never again will I buy another Epson product.

The only reason I rated it 1 of 5 is that rating it below zero was not an option. I bought one of these disasters late fall of 2003. I bought it new not refurished. Now in Feb of 2004 it has died. It is the dorkiest printer I have ever seen. Even when it worked it printed several sheets at once and threw paper all over the floor. I ran out of color ink but still had black left. I only wanted black and white print but it would not print anything. Even if I switched the printer settings to black only it would print nothing. SO I went to buy new cartridges. By golly they were out of color. So I was stuck until I could find a store that had color. Changing the cartridges was dorky too. With HP printers, the process was obvious enough that I only need to read the instructions once. With the Epson I have to find the manual to find which button(s) to push to get it to move the print head out so I can swap cartridges. There are a number of unintuitive steps to the process. It seems to always be a half hour ordeal. Well, it is not a long process anymore. Now the "helpful" LCD display on the printer reads "General Error. See your printer documentation for information about clearing this error." There is no information on clearing errors at all in the documentation. I plan to clear the error by clearing this waste of plastic right out of my home.

Havent been able to use the cd function yet because I havent had the time. but printed alot of photos and it is awsome. As far as economy of ink and pricing. This is one of the best.Don't belive me then go to Toms hardware and check their review out. They are the masters. No problems with the printer and would have to recommend to any and everyone. Also on there lineup the r300 had the best prints. Very lifelike.Great Printer Especially for the Price.

When I first read about this printer in a computer magazine, I was immediately impressed by its functions and price point. CD/DVD printers cost $100's more and even then, they usually just serve that single function. Later that day, I went out and bought one.The R200 not only prints directly onto the discs, but is also a quality photo printer. You can print out crisp images with that function as well as carry out normal day-to-day tasks like homework and other documents. It's great because the printer has an extra USB port on the front of the machine for easy hookup to a laptop. The software for the printer is easy to install and there really was no printer alignment necessary. It did all the work for me.The only thing you really need to buy, if you don't already have one, is a USB cable because it doesn't come with one packed in the box. Yeah, I know. I was disappointed in that too, but the features made up for that. Speaking of features, in order to successfully print onto a disc, you must use an Ink-Jet printable disc. Otherwise, you'll have a disc with a pool of ink on it.

Being that parallel printers are getting harder to come by, I found the Epson still makes a few. After dealing with an HP 3820 which only lasted two years, I found it was time to go to another brand. The Epson Stylus C86 was easy to install and prints like a charm. Now of course, I'm still back in the boondocks with Windows 98, but the printer is super fast, easy to change the cartridges and appears a bit more durable than the cheap HP products.Yes, Epson, I'm riding in your boat for now on!

This computer is a good deal, for doing the minimal stuff like priniting some from the internet ,spreadsheets, etc. If you want to see great pictures get a laser printer duh !!!or print them at a photography studio. How do you expect an ink jet printer to do that. My Ink lasted 4 monthes and proubly would off laster longer but i printed some graphics, so of course that took ink. its a good printer for you're home computer, nothing big like pictures.

When this printer is working, it works well. However, it doesn't work well for very long. As witnessed by other reviews, I have also had to replace color cartridges when all I did was print in black, and print head cleaning is nothing but a waste of ink. And this printer DOES waste ink, even to the point that once the microchip in the cartridge reads zero, it's still half full of ink! (I broke one of my "empty" cartridges open just to see) I won't be buying any more Epson products, my husband has a small HP printer that's been nothing but reliable for three years now, I've had my Epson for two with nothing but problems!

If you own an Epson Stylus C60, you will become acquainted with this cartridge. The features claimed by the company are accurate in my experience. It installs easily, it is smudge free, and it dries quickly. There is no need to get into the details about those features. The printer is intended for low-level printing needs, and is meant to be easy to use. It is.The downside of an entry-level color printer is that the cartridges are used up quickly. Epson might be bound by engineering, that only a limited amount of ink could be secured inside of a limited size cartridge. It could be they held back. I do not know. What you should be aware of is that, no matter what the reason is, you should have plenty of the black cartridges on hand. This is not ink for a printer meant for small businesses, including home offices. This is for the computer user who rarely prints, but like to print in color, who does not mind waiting while the cartridge hits the page.Anthony Trendleditor, HungarianBookstore.com

First the good news...this printer makes great quailty photo and document prints for the money. For me, that ends the good.Aside from that, it has many other issues that drive me nuts. First, it takes what seems like an eternity to print the first page. Goes through a bunch of gyrations until it decides its ready to print. Its also very loud, and I think uses a lot of ink (maybe thats why the prints look so good). Finally, the thing jams pretty regularly. Its not a printer you can load a bunch of paper in, print a large document and walk away assured that when you return it will be done. More than likely, it will have jammed.Bottom line...if you don't print too much and want quality prints, this one may be for you. If you are looking for an everyday printer...forget it.

I bought my Epson printer with my new PC. It was loud and jerky, but the print quality was good. The factory ink cartidges have almost nothing in them, so you have to replace them pretty quickly. When I installed all new cartidges my printer quit printing in black. I contacted Epson and they indicated I might have to buy new cartidges again. I searched on the web and found there are thousands of people who experience the exact same problem I have and Epson knows all about it, but they won't fix it. My Epson printer, new as it is, is now sitting in the trash. I put my old HP 722C back on my desk and have had no problem with it ever. I will never buy another Epson product again. And from what I've read of other user's reviews they feel the same way. Epson is junk.

I purchased my Epson C84 in September 2003. I was pleasantly surprised by the print quality - particularly the hi-res glossy photo paper color prints which truly were excellent! When it came time to replace the ink cartridges in December 2003 - three color and the single black - I went with generic (after-market cartridges) rather than Epson cartridges. Alas, now in January, I've started experiencing an apparently irreversible print-quality and page-coverage degradation; both color and black. I say 'apparently irreversible' because repeated print-head cleanings and alignments have made no impact on the print quality, and the printer essentially is now useless. I even installed the Epson driver on another computer and did some test prints, but could not solve the problem. I can't say for certain that the non-Epson cartridges are the culprit, or even a contributing factor, but the C84 worked perfectly before the generic ink-cartridge replacements. Fortunately, I kept my old, reliable Epson Stylus Color 980 which, after three years (including ALL-GENERIC ink cartridges!), still does a credible job. Bottom line: the Epson C84 is an excellent buy for the money; but, just to be on the safe side, stick with the recommended Epson-brand ink cartridges.

Overall, this is a good printer. It was breeze to install and start using. The print quality of text documents and spreadsheets is great and can be improved by changing the settings at the expense of using more ink. And this--the use and cost of ink--is one of the most important factors to consider with this as well as other ink-jet printers. Keep in mind that you are likely to spend much more on ink cartridges during the first year than the out of pocket cost of this printer. PC World (March 2004) estimated the black ink cost per page to be 6.4 cents. Assuming that you will print just 3 b/w pages per day, the ink will cost you $70.08 per year. If you also print high quality color photos, expect to spend even more. I've had this printer for about 6 weeks and have already used up 75% of the "high capacity" black ink cartridge. Please note that the USB cable is not included. This is not really an issue since you can buy it for only $6 also from amazon.com.I would recommend this printer for those who need to print something occasionaly and are not heavy users.

We have had this printer for about 6 months and although the print quality is good it drinks ink at an alarming rate. It is also substantially slower than the specs would indicate. This is in large part due to the draft quality of the output being almost unusable. Perhaps I was spoiled with the HP Deskjet who's draft output was sufficient for 99% of our needs. So far we have gone through about 6 reams of paper and 2 sets of ink. At an average of 30 dollars a cartridge we should easily exceed the cost of the printer in the first 9 months.

Just had this printer a couple weeks now, and finally completed making it so that it prints from my home PC via Parallel, and Laptop via USB.Prints are great! So far I have only had the opportunity to burn up some Coated 8.5 x 11 sheets on pictures and some graphics, plus a plain paper envelope or two. No problem as long as the driver installed properly.I was debating and debating between the C80 and the 785EPX for quite some time, and as an avid digital photo geek, it was a tough choice - archival with individual durable inks - or the 785EPX with the edge to edge, card support, 2 extra colors, and 4x6 rolls. Well I still feel that the extra two colors are unnecessary - just a way to sell more ink (the money's in the blades son). And I have no issue viewing my pictures on the computer prior to wasting more of that precious commodity. So I went for the C80, and I'm delighted with my decision. Who needs two extra colors and wet edges. For really special prints I go to shutterfly.com anyway. So here's my driver advice:My W98 (1'st edition) home PC installed without issue, and printed from the Parallel port without complaint. On the other side, I was attempting to attach my work W2k laptop to the USB, and ran into difficulty. I believe the issue is that I needed to install "USB printer support" from my system prior to it allowing the Epson printer drivers. This issue was not listed in the instructions - neither the "read me first" nor the full documentation. It only needs to be done once, which explains why some see it and others do not. When it asks you to cancel the HW detection, don't cancel out of the "USB Printer Support" Hardware detection. Let it install the built-in Windows drivers for USB printers, then it goes on to install the actual printer - which you do from the CD (or downloaded drivers). Other than that... One theory I have for so many drivers issues with the other users is that it is a good idea to uninstall any pervious Local Printers on the system. These programs tend to run in the background and "lock in" your LPT settings - like that little ink monitor and other icons that like to display in your sys-tray (on the bottom right of your screen). HP and Epson both seem to have these background programs. So if you had a HP previously, and didn't uninstall first, then it could still be hanging on to your port settings. My previous model was a Canon - BJC4300 which died when I had amassed over a hundred bucks on ink - always had to have some on hand, because it gave you no warning when it was going to start printing funny stripy pictures. But then again, it had no little TSR (Terminate and Stay Resident - don't you wish that your boss would say that to you?) program to foul up the Epson installation.I've seen this type of driver issue repeatedly - one of my past lives involved troubleshooting people's computers. There once was a "Winnie the Pooh" doll that attached to the parallel printer so the kiddies could program it to read them stories. Well this one customer could only get Pooh to speak in tongues that sounded kind of like a modem - you should have seen what a sight it was to see Winnie moving his lips to the sound of "EEEEkakakaka". Anyway the issue was the LPT Port was "captured" by the Epson printer driver. The customer had deleted all the Epson printer files already so it was too late to uninstall. We had to re-install the Epson Driver - from the printer which was now returned back to the store - and then uninstall that driver. Nice printer other than that. It's not a quiet as an HP, but it shouldn't jam up as much either. Sounds very "professional". Plus the "smoothness" of the 3 picoliter drops is better than HP. After maybe 8 pages of full color photo's the ink is still way over 90% - much better than the Canon would have been at this point.Good luck with the drivers...MarcP.S. W2k uses the XP driver I believe.

Stay far, far away from Epsons in general, as I've had nothing but ill luck with them all. I've had the R300 for, oh, 12 hours now, and I have yet to make it print ONE CD (which is all I bought the damn thing for). I'm not computer illiterate - yet I've tried everything patiently all day, and still nothing except for the usual "CD / DVD TRAY OPEN" error, which is insane since I WANT the tray open for printing. I assume the print quality is very nice, but I don't know for sure because IT WON'T PRINT. Epson should rename these things - they aren't printers, they're UN-printers. What a stunningly stinking piece of maldesigned technological crapola. And you can quote me on that.

Prints great and is quiet. Sucks ink like a hungry baby on a bottle.20 8"x10" prints = $100+ in ink. Epson would give this printer away for free, but they're smart enough to know that buyers would suspect a catch. I know - charge the buyer for the printer AND continually drain there wallets in ink expenses. Epson doesn't make money on printers- they make money on repeat sales of ink. To make more money on ink they make a printer that blows through it. A WIN-WIN for Epson! Hoo-ray Epson!Oh....but like I said, it does print nice...but should't it anyway?

My wife and i bought this printer becuase she likes to print all the digital pictures she takes, and this printer has the slots for the media cards. We actually went through three printers before we got one that worked right. The other printers the removable media slots kept connecting and disconnecting randomly. The software was install correctly, we brought two of them back and finally got one that works. Now that we have a working printer, it is great. One big draw back if just one of the ink tanks is empty the printer will not print, i thought that was odd. Very easy to use and set up and the media slots now that they work are very nice, we don't even have to dock the camera anymore just put the card in the computer and use the photo software that came with the printer to change the pictures on the computer. Great buy.

Epson C84 comes with a high capacity (900 pages @ 5% coverage, but about 500 pages in real life) black ink and 3 color ink tanks but no printer cable. The size is compact, it looks cool, has good build quality and installation was quick. The print quality for text is very good for an inkjet (slightly better than Canon i320) and speed is pretty fast 5-6 pages per min (faster than i320). Both the photos printed on the supplied paper sample were annoying skewed (even after we made sure paper was put in properly). The quality didn't look impressive for photos.Printer and cartridges have smart chips in them (as do new hp's). This will ensure that you can't put in generic ink but pay Epson each time ink runs out. Also there are reports that the printer declares ink over well before it really is. To make things worse Epson seems to use different cartridge models for almost every printer it makes (Canon & hp use same cartidges in many printers). One good thing about C84 is that its very silent, even while printing. I guess this is about as silent as you will get with printers. Also the text prints look better than on hp, significantly clearer & blacker. In short, if you want a text only printer get a Samsung (ML-1710) or Minolta (PagePro 1250W) laser printer for similar price. For good photo printers look at the Canon line up or even better get prints at local stores. Epson C84 is recommended for medium text printing & occasional photo printing.

Best print algorithms yet, nice looking photos at even the faster 360 dpi, BUT....they still haven't got the pick-up mechanism right. The Epson 900 and 980 had such a great pick-up mechanism - you could do a ream without a single missed page, but Epson changed it for the C80 and the C82, and that pick-up used to sometimes pull and squeeze multiple sheets through the rollers (several heart stoppages!) The C84 is a little different, and I haven't had a multiple sheet pull yet after several thousand prints, but sometimes it doesn't push the card stock sheets into place and will print a whole page on the roller with the intended page hanging. Or sometimes with a light-weight 20-lb sheet, it will not get a good grab and skew the page throught the rollers and jam in the mechanism. Also - they shortened the tray input and output guides! Can no longer easily do a legal page (I stick a hard piece of cardboard on the output tray to hold any legal print-outs.)Sooooo, I love the increasing quality of these CHEAP printers, but beware the paper-handling foibles.
