My apologies for this long review. Hopefully, though, it will be useful to someone.I've spent some time the past 2 weeks comparing competing products for transferring home videos into digital format on my Windows 7 PC for long-term preservation and so that I can edit the videos on my PC. I tried or considered three different products including this Elgato Video Capture, and one high-end video transfer company, all on the same Hi8 analog video cassette with a family video that is 15 years old. Along the way, I have gotten some familiarity with the various technologies available today for transferring magnetic tapes into digital form. I found out some interesting things, and thought I would share them, in the hope that it might help others.First, and you probably already know this, if you have any video memories on magnetic video tape, you want to get them transferred into digital form onto your PC or DVD or Blu-ray as soon as possible, before the video badly deteriorates. This especially includes regular VHS tapes, Video8 tapes, and normal Hi8 tapes, all of which are analog formats and are particularly susceptible to deterioration starting after about 10 years. Somewhat less susceptible to deterioration are Digital8 (which is also recorded on Hi8 tapes) and MiniDV tapes, because those are digital formats. But even for digital tapes, it is still magnetic tape which deteriorates over time, and you need to get those videos off of there. Seriously, at the risk of sounding like a doomsayer, if you have precious memories on magnetic video tape, you need to transfer that video off of those tapes and into digital form as soon as possible, or risk losing them forever. It's not hard to do, and you'll sleep better at night when you get it done!In my case, I have a bunch of precious Hi8 family video tapes recorded on a high-end Sony consumer camcorder between 10 and 19 years ago, and I am rescuing these Hi8 videos a little on the late side. I wish I had started this project 5 years ago instead. These tapes are still watchable, but they have developed some lines and drop-outs and "hiccups" and digital artifacts. With multiple playback retries, I can fortunately still coax out fairly high quality from these tapes.A quick note: Digital8 and MiniDV video tape camcorders have USB ports on them for digitally transferring your videos to your PC or Mac. If this is your situation, there is NO need to purchase one of these video transfer products (like Elgato Video Capture). You will get the best quality, by far, by using a USB cable to connect your camcorder to your PC or Mac, playing back your video in the camcorder, and using any of a whole bunch of different inexpensive software products on the market that will allow you to capture video from the USB port on your computer. This way, you are getting the digital video in its original form, which is great. You will get worse quality if you use a video transfer product that captures the video off of the video ports on the camcorder, because the camcorder is converting the digital video into analog, then the video transfer product converts the analog back to digital (not ideal, for sure). So, for the rest of this review, I will assume you have analog magnetic video tape (like VHS, Video8, or normal Hi8), in which case you need a video transfer product like this Elgato Video Capture or something similar.A note about video resolution: The analog video tape formats (VHS, Video8, and normal Hi8) all have native video resolutions less than 640x480. All of the video transfer products on the market record the video from these formats at either 640x480 or 720x480. It doesn't really matter which of these two resolutions the product records at. The point is, all of the video transfer products record at higher resolution than the original video, so you are capturing all of the resolution of the original video when you do the video transfer, which is good.A note about overscan lines at the bottom of captured video: As documented all over the Internet, when capturing digital video from an analog video source like an analog magnetic video tape, you will end up with some additional fuzzy lines at the bottom of the captured video. This is totally normal. When played back on a regular TV, these overscan lines are usually chopped off because they appear "below the bottom of the screen," but the digital capture grabs them. To get rid of those lines, you can crop or zoom in slightly when you do your video editing. Interestingly, this Elgato Video Capture device automatically does a minor zoom on all captured video to remove those fuzzy lines.A remark about video editing: Two of the products below (Elgato and Hauppauge) produce video files that use H.264 compression. This is an excellent video compression standard for viewing, and is supported by just about all video editing software. However, if you are going to do significant video editing, you may want to use some video conv

WOW! I have, as I'm sure many of you have had, all these old family videos or just funny things you have recorded off of TV or whatever your case may be. So I had this bright idea to look up such a product to convert my old VHS tapes to digital versions on my Mac and/or PC. My VHS tapes are obviously old and take up lots of space and are getting to the point where I'm afraid this old VHS player will eat the tape and my memories will be gone forever! So I came across this product.First I'd like to say that I kept reading reviews on it as well as a few other products and people would say how easy it was. "My mom could use this", "anyone can use this", "easy as 1, 2, 3" and more similar sayings. Well I had my doubts as I'm sure you've read that before then had a major let down and an epic fail on the product. Well let me clear things up, THIS product is so easy to use! It's unbelievable! I literally opened the packaging, pulled the cd out, inserted it into my MacBook Pro, the installer openned. It instructed me to grab the icon and drag it to my "Applications" folder, then it installed. The next thing was to connect the USB device. After that it walked me through, connecting the audio and video to the VCR or DVR. Simple enough right? Then it says "start recording" then when you're through, press "stop recording" from there it lets you edit the beginning and the end of your clip. After you "Trim" your clip the applications gives you a few options, upload to youtube, edit in iMovie, and a few others I can't recall. You can simply click on the file path click the file name and it brings a new folder window open so you can move the file to your desired location. Then the thing that I love the most, is that in iMovie it's so simple to edit your clips. You can (from the original VHS rip) just rip the full tape then edit it in iMovie, OR you can "start" and "stop" recording and edit as you go with the clips. If you do this option make sure that you pause your VCR because the tape will continute to play even after you say "stop recording" on your computer, which is fine of course. After you edit your videos either in iMovie or in the Video Capture Device application itself. You can directly upload to YouTube, Facebook, sync with your Apple iPhone, iPod, iPad, Apple TV, and the Windows editings applications. (I use my Mac so I haven't used it on a PC yet.) It's so simple to use and so practical. Like my title says, it's the best $90 i've ever spent! For $90 you can save all of your home videos and family videos of you as a kid or of your kids or your old family or whatever! It's the coolest thing I've purchased in a long time and the most practical by far. Whoever invented this product deserves some huge award! The ONLY negative thing I can say about this product is this. When you are watching your VHS tape in the Video Capture Device software application, it shows you what you are recording as it's playing of course. So with that said you have to sit there and watch the tape to know when you want to stop. Unless you want to just edit it later in iMovie. But that's not the negative, the negative is when you try and fast forward or rewind your VCR, the computer will show it fast forwarding but after about 10 seconds tape time. The screen will show "no signal" I guess because the tape is moving so fast or something, I don't know. So with that said if you are unaware of what is on your VHS tape, you should watch it on the VCR first and take notes or fast forward throught he tape skimming for the part you want to record, then start from there. Not the biggest deal in the world I know and given all the Pro's of this product, it's one Con is NOT enough to burst my bubble.I hope this review helps you and I promise, if you purchase this product you will NOT be disapointed, I can't stop talking about how great it is!Sincerely,Philip

I just bought the Elgato Video Capture and I absolutely love it. It's dead simple and does exactly what I want.In the box:- Elgato Video Capture hardware- Elgato Video Capture software CD-ROM (for Mac 10.5.8+ and Windows 7)- Cyberlink PowerDirector 8 CD-ROM- Proof of purchase key (on the Video Capture software CD envelope, which I never had to type in anywhere for some reason)- Composite-to-SCART adaptor- Composite video/RCA stereo cable (which is only three feet long, so you may want to invest in a longer cord)Something to keep in mind if you're going to purchase this used like I did, the one I bought came with everything but the Cyberlink PowerDirector 8 CD and the composite to SCART adaptor, so I can't comment on either of those items. But I believe if you have iMovie or Windows Movie Maker, you probably won't need the PowerDirector program. Also, although I don't intend to install this on Windows (especially considering my laptop is running Vista, not 7), I'm very happy that this device works on both Mac and Windows.Setup (I'm using an Intel iMac, running Leopard 10.5.8 with 4GB RAM):Setup was quick and painless: connect the composite cables into the back of the device you want to record from (in my case, the TV 1 area on the back of my DVR). Connect the other ends into the Elgato capture hardware and then plug the USB into a USB port on your computer. Then install the application by putting the CD in and then dragging the app icon into the /Applications folder. Boom, done. The Software:The app itself is very straightforward and I haven't had any issues with it crashing or hanging. The app is in a setup format:Screen 1: Naming the video file and choosing how long the recording will be. The time length option is only for letting you know how many MB the final file will be, rather than a time restriction.Screen 2: Selecting the video input and aspect ratio. Here, you can select if the video input is S-Video or Composite and if the aspect ratio is 4:3 or 16:9. Personally, I would play around with the aspect ratio to get the best looking picture. For instance, even though my TV is a widescreen, I chose 4:3 in the app and adjusted my TV to stretch 4:3 (non-HD) video across the screen (making it 16:9) and that was the best choice for video quality (in my opinion). I used 16:9 in the app to record a 16:9 (HD) video. It really depends, so I would suggest doing a couple of tests with different settings to see what will give you the best video quality.Screen 3: Audio check. Nothing to do here except make sure you have sound.Screen 4: Recording. There are two checkboxes for automatically stopping the recording after 10 minutes and muting the sound (not of the recording but of the playback over your computer speakers) and a large red record button. There is next to no lag time when you press the record button. Also, there's a timer at the bottom of the screen that shows how long you've been recording, as well as how large the file is becoming (which is very helpful to know). A 30 second clip is about 6mb, so make sure you have plenty of space on your hardrive.Screen 5: Viewing and trimming the video. If you recorded too much, you can trim the beginning and end (no ability to trim video from the middle). You don't have to utilize this feature if you plan on editing in iMovie later but it's very helpful if you just want to trim, export and go.Screen 6: Once you make it to this page, the video will export to the location of your choice (which you can choose in the Preferences pane). This screen lists where the file was saved, as well as giving you options to play the video in Quicktime Player, add to iTunes, edit with iMovie and upload to Youtube (the app stays open if you choose any of the options). At the bottom are two buttons to exit the app or begin the process again. The Preferences are also short and sweet:Tab 1: Choose where the videos will be saved, which format the video will be (Automatic, MPEG-4 or H.264) and a checkbox for checking for updates automatically [haven't had any updates (and I probably won't since I'm on Leopard) but I feel better knowing that updates will come in the app rather than requiring me to go searching all over].Tab 2: Video adjustments (Brightness, Contrast, Saturation and Hue controlled by percentage sliders, which you can adjust while watching the video, before recording)Tab 3: Audio adjustments (Volume)Video and Audio Quality:Here are some screencaps showing the video quality:Screencap of a 4:3 recording (originally 4:3 video stretched to 16:9 on the TV): [...]Screencap of a 4:3 recording (originally 4:3 video kept at 4:3 on the TV): [...]Screencap of a 16:9 recording (originally 16:9 video kept at 16:9 on the TV): [...]I was worried the video quality wouldn't be very good, based on some of the reviews, but I'm very happy with it. It's not HD quality but I didn't expect it to be (you're using composite cables... can't get much better than 480i). It's slightly fuzzy but otherwise, v

Maybe this product works flawlessly on a Mac, but it doesn't on a pretty new PC (and the manufacturer's packaging and website says it works on PCs). I sure wish I had made a point of reading all the 1 star reviews for this product before I purchased it, because there are consistent themes: poor audio quality, dropping picture frames, and what I've personally experienced, problems with the device working/software recognizing the device is plugged in to the USB port, and lousy customer service. Lesson learned. This product is advertised as having an easy installation. You connect the device to a video source, plug it into a 2.0 USB port on your computer, install the drivers and software via the included CD, and then go. If it had actually worked, it would indeed be easy. My computer isn't even a year old, it has the 2.0 USB ports, I have the necessary software and hardware, and I got the error message "Please connect the Elgato Video Capture" device to a 2.0 USB port, even though it was already connected. So I tried a couple of things on my own. I went to the Elgato website and re-downloaded the drivers and software in case there was any difference (since it appeared to download several additional drivers, it looks like the CD may have been out of date). I unplugged the device and tried it in all 6 of the USB ports. Still didn't work. Rebooted the computer several times. No difference. So I decided to contact technical support.Let me first say, this isn't easy. I suspect Elgato doesn't want to talk to you because they make it just about as difficult as possible to contact them as they can. If you click on support from the product page, it just keeps taking you in an endless loop, without giving you any mechanism to contact them. You have to click on the "Support" link in the footer to get anywhere. And even then you have to "submit a ticket" a click the box saying you want to talk to a phone representative to get the toll free number. So I did that. After giving the CSR all my contact information, explaining very briefly what I had done and what the problem was, he asked if I had another computer to test the product on (I don't) so he said sounds like you have a dead device. So I requested a replacement from Amazon and was prepared to try again.Got the new device and got exactly the same results. The first device wasn't damaged at all, the problem lies elsewhere (or Elgato has a substantially high defective rate). So I called back yesterday at around 3pm PST. The CSR pulled up my previous ticket, I told him what new had happened, and he informed me that the problem was above his level, and that he would have to pass the problem up to the technicians above him. Problem was, they had all left for the day. It was 3pm PST, and the help line is supposedly available until 8pm PST, so five hours before the end of support hours, there was no effective help for anyone who called in. He would have to submit a support ticket and have someone call me back the next day (today). So no one called. I waited until 1pm PST to call them, but didn't want to wait too long in case they were gone early again. The CSR I talked to had me re-install the drivers and software from the website (he basically admitted that what's on the CD may well be out of date, that it may contain third party software that they no longer use. In that case, why are they shipping out product with CDs that contain the wrong software?), had me uninstall the software and reinstall it again, had me check to see if the device was showing up on my computer in my list of "devices and printers", and that there were no exclamation marks next to the drivers installed (showing some deficiency) and then declared that that was the limit of his skill set, he would have to submit a report up the technical chain and that I would "receive an email" in 24 hours. I told him that had already been done yesterday, it was almost 24 hours as it was, and all I was going to get was an email? No phone call? No one to talk me through this and figure out the problem? He told me an email was all he could offer me.The technical support is difficult to get, substandard and unacceptable. Every other manufacturer I've ever dealt with gave the toll free phone option up front, easily accessible. The good ones actually include the technical support contact information on, or inside the product, you don't have to hunt on their website to find contact information. The first CSR incorrectly pronounced the first device dead based on 60 seconds of information, the second and third I spoke with by their own admission had limited skill sets and couldn't do much. The people who supposedly can and will know more, won't respond to me until 1 - 3 days after the support ticket is filed, and even then, only by email, they aren't willing to get on the phone and actually speak with me and try to help me get the situation resolved. I've never had a technical support departm

Like most people who're older than 20, I have a stack of older videotapes of various family events gathering dust on a shelf somewhere in my house. These videos may be dusty because they're not the kind of thing I'd want to watch often, or even regularly. But they DO represent valuable family history that can't be replaced if lost or destroyed, and although they're not something I'd watch often, I want to preserve them. But the truth is that analog video tape degrades over time. Oxide particles become brittle and chip off the tape surface, resulting in degraded picture and sound, and eventually rendering the tape unplayable. What to do? I'd known about such analog-to-digital conversion units for years -- they are not new to the market by any means. But it was something that, in the hustle and bustle of everyday life, I just hadn't gotten around to researching quite yet. However, when my wife sent me a link to a service that puts tapes in digital format for $25 PER HOUR OF TAPE, I figured now was the time to finally get started on this project.I've been using Apple computers since the days of the II+, so the name Elgato was familiar to me already, and after having a look around at some of the other options out there, this was the unit I settled on. Other units either had universally shaky reviews (both professional and user), such as the Roxio Easy VHS to DVD for Mac or they were solutions which cost much more money, designed to be a much sturdier, higher-use product for the a/v professional, not the weekend warrior like me. If that type of unit is really what you want or think you need, there are companies out there who will happily sell you a product that does the same thing as this one, for two to six times the price, such as the Canopus / Grass Valley ADVC-110 Advanced Digital Video Converter - 77010150100. I'm sure you'll get a wonderful piece of pro-grade equipment which will outlive you. ;o)But if what you need and want is a sleek, compact, easy-to-use (and understand) video conversion unit which has very good quality and that inimitable "it just works" Mac-like interface, look no further than this Elgato video capture device. One thing we tend to forget, in this age of 1920 x 1080 and progressive-scan 1080p and retina display resolutions is that NTSC (which is what virtually all broadcast TV and video tapes were until the advent of digital broadcast) is still only 640 x 480. Always has been, always will be: that's the written standard for NTSC. On one of today's high-res monitors, a 640 x 480 window looks rather small and cheap indeed...nevertheless, that's what all of our TVs' resolutions used to be. The point is that you don't NEED an Avid console to render digital video at that resolution; a small and sleek device like the Elgato is plenty to extract the maximum resolution capable out of the format and convert it to digital. And the interface is - as I mentioned - drop-dead simple. It allows you all the basic functionality you'd need, offering you choices about how you want to store the media after conversion (YouTube upload and import-to-iMovie features are standard), and guiding you through the few steps of the process. Seriously, your mom could do this; it's that well-explained. And, at it's current price on Amazon, you could only pay a professional service to do three hours of tape before you exceeded the cost of purchasing the Elgato and doing it yourself, at your own pace -- and having a solution available to do it again, should you ever need or want to. This one's a no-brainer: if you're looking to convert hours and hours of old NTSC video to digital format where it can be safely stored away from the ravages that afflict analog tape, you really can't do better than this unit. All you could do is spend more, and why would you want to do THAT?

I read many of the reviews of the Elgato Video Capture Device, pro and con. I read of some success stories, but many reviews complained about poor documentation and support, as well as out of sync audio. I went ahead and baought it based on the overall positive trend of the reviews. Bad idea. After spending many days tranferring high quality, store bought, lightly played, music instrucation VHS tapes, I gave up. The reviews were right - the audio sync is a major problem, at least on my set up (2 yr old high end Dell, Win 7, Mitsubishi HS-U747 VHS recorder). The audio starts out fine, then gradually lags to a delay of several seconds. This was true on 30 min and 2 hr+ videos. In the few cases where the audio lag did not happen I had to do several transfers before I got one to work. I made no changes to the set up that could have contributed to the successful tranfers. I tried rebooting many, many times and reinstalled the SW 2-3 times from CD and website (these were the same versions anyway). None of this made any difference. I started out every session with a PC reboot and did not run any other programs. I even tried disconnecting from the internet and turning off my security SW.The SW install was problematic and I had to install it several times with PC lock ups along the way. Once I got past that, the transfer process was easy - the only positive I can give to this product. However, I found I was only able to get about 1 of 10 transfers to be acceptable for audio. That is not reliable enough for me so I returned the Elgato and bought a Hauppauge HD PVR. That device has a similar mix of pro/con reviews, so I will review it after using it for a few transfers. This is my first review and this product is so bad I decided to write one. I gave this the lowest possible rating because the Elgato Video Capture Device simply DOES NOT WORK.

I have a 2.4 G MacBook and the Elgato video capture allowed me to easily transfer from VHS to DVD some family movies for our kids to (someday) reflect upon. The video capture was easy and, when it came to iMovie and iDVD, I followed the following (see below) kind of rough-hewn instructions and made simple, relatively unedited copies combining several clips from several tapes. The Elgato app software is dragged and dropped in Finder applications and then a double click on the application starts the program prompts. When finished with Elgato's procedure:In iMovie* Make a project and add videos to it in the way You want it* When edited it to Your liking then* Go up to Share Menu and here - Select "Share to Media Browser" and as Large (Not HD or other resolution)(I never use "Share to iDVD" in any version of iMovie at all - as result degrades)* Now close iMovie and* Open iDVD - (If You got a brand new Mac then it doesn't come with iDVD so You must get it in another way)* In the new iDVD Project goto Media Button and here to Movies and now You find it and can import it into Your iDVD project.* When You are done with the layout of this* Press Burn button and insert a New DVD disk WHEN iDVD ASKS FOR IT - NOT Prior to this !These instructions leave a little bit to be desired, but if you work with the applications for a bit, it will all work out. Apparently, iDVD is not present on some newer Mac systems, but my system is from 2008 and is updated to Lion and 750 G HD. 2G RAM and iDVD is resident, application software on my system. You must dedicate some real time and some editing/converting time to complete the tasks, but Elgato offers an option that allows you to set a shut-off time, permitting you to simply leave Elgato grinding away and come back later to initiate the ensuing, editing and publishing steps. The cost of the unit was, for us, about the same as what it would have cost to have a third-party produce DVDs from our VHS tapes. The main advantage to procuring this unit was that we were able to have the final DVDs have only the images that we wanted to capture as we were able to edit out the superfluous, creating an efficient, less monotonous rendition of our family's history. Matter of fact, one part of one of the disks might be entered in Funniest Home Videos. It's pretty bad.

definitely was easy to set up and get rolling, i was recording within minutes of opening the package. have had a couple recordings error out at the end, but i was actually still able to salvage the recording the 2nd time it happened (the file was still actually there, so i copied it before i "ok'd" the error - hitting okay seems to deletes this interim file). quality cannot be adjusted and is probably equivalent to the primary media that it is being used for (VHS tapes) and okay for smaller screens, but once you hit the big screen it is pretty obvious that you don't have a high-res recording. this is pretty much the same experience you would have if you were playing the original VHS media straight on a big screen, but i didn't realize that it limits your higher-quality original media to these low settings. because of that (and a shake that it seemed to impose to one of my videos that wasn't there when i played it straight to my TV afterwards - though i haven't TOTALLY ruled out that it could somehow be the VCR being fickle), it isn't the total solution that i hoped for. it will probably be perfect for converting all my miniDV recordings from my old video cam, and may be okay for other applications as well, but seeing the quality degradation on an HD recording and the "shakies" stopped my conversion to digital for now - i was hoping to be able to just click and go for everything i have, and don't have a block of time right now to compare quality or see if shakes were a one-time thing or VCR anomaly.don't fear to get this if you are just converting old stuff, will likely make you 100% happy for its ease of use.

Overall I'd say this product is disappointing compared to comparably priced alternatives. First, the software exports to mp4 and that's it. You have no choices. Second, while you can select one of two aspect rations (4:3 or widescreen), you are stuck with 640 x 480 resolution. Third, and most importantly, every time I captured video I experienced major capture problems that left the captured footage totally useless, even with an operating system optimized for performance and no other programs running at the same time. The software drops frames and can't recover from that, so I almost always ended up with my audio being terribly out of sync with the video. So, I am sending this junk back. Today I went out and bought Avid Technology Dazzle DVD Recorder HD V14.0. The hardware is a little bulkier and you need to buy a composite cable with male jacks on both ends (Elgato comes with this cable), but I was pleasantly surprised. While you can't really capture in HD (that's misleading), I experienced no capture problems except for a few dropped frames right at the beginning, and you have lots of control over export formats (AVI, mpeg2, WMV, mp4, etc.) and quality settings. Plus you can edit your footage (not just "trim" it which is the lame claim to fame in Elgato) in Pinnacle 14, which comes with Dazzle. Best of all, it's cheaper! I would NEVER use Pinnacle as my editing environment (it's very buggy), but if your goal is to capture usable video at decent quality, do a bit of basic editing, and have control over capture settings and export settings, Elgato Video Capture is *****NOT***** the way to go. Maybe you'll get lucky. I didn't. Plus it's more expensive than Dazzle. People dig Elgato because it works with their Macs. If you have a PC and don't want to spend a fortune on professional capture equipment, I say Dazzle is the way to go. It works for me, at least. I wanted a simple, lightweight capture system that would work with my laptop (Windows 7, i5 core processor, 4GB of RAM). Dazzle works. Elgato flopped within the first few seconds of capturing.

I needed this product for two reasons. One, I'm a sports broadcaster and needed this capture card to capture high school sports while I did my commentating and ran an overlaying ticker. I had some trouble early with the software shutting down with adobe live media encoder, but it was simply me trying to change my settings too much. Once tech support through the company I work with to broadcast talked to me, the issue was resolved quickly. I also got a new computer (i5 2.5 GHz) to keep up with the demand of the software. Now, my videos are looking great, even in standard def. No drops in frames or nothing. Great for my broadcasting. Second, I couldn't afford the game capture HD, so I also used this to record my PS3 gameplay. It isn't the best of quality, considering its only standard def. Also, it sucks that my HDTV also has to be in standard def. In addition, my computer jumped to 80% CPU while trying to record! When broadcasting, it only uses 25% CPU. But besides these things, the final product is decent. The stats and players on NBA 2K13 can be seen ok. To see my gameplay video on NBA 2K13, go search sportsfreakize at youtube and it should be there along with my sports broadcasting vids. BTW, you'll have to run audacity or any other voiceover program to voice over gameplay.Due to the things I said about recording gameplay, I will give this product a strong 4. If you want a good capturing device, get the Elgato Game Capture HD. But if you are ok with 360p quality on gaming, then get this and save money. Great device for my broadcasting hands down and totally worth my $80.

This is a very good product, though ultimately I returned it. There is very little you need to think about in terms of settings, etc.; it basically handles it all for you automatically, and there is a lot to be said for that approach. It will: - decide on the video format (compression format) based on the capabilities of your Mac (you can also do a manual override) - crop the video ever so slightly, to remove the unsightly "overscan" lines at bottom or other edges. - apparently apply mild color/contrast adjustments that make dark areas more visible (compared to the other capture device I tried) - capture the video directly into the final storage format you'll likely want. The quality is quite good, in many cases it is hard to tell it apart from the source material, especially if you are not a perfectionist. For some material -- dimly lit video with detailed patterns like the weave of a carpet -- blocky patches of compression are visible and can be distracting. If you go with the manual override (and have a fast enough Mac), you get to choose from two formats: h.264 at 1.4 Mbps, or MPEG-4 at 2.4 Mbps. They are awfully close in quality for most material--goes to show how good h.264 is, to yield near-identical quality at half the data rate. I found MPEG-4 to show fewer compression artifacts overall, just barely. The Elgato can drop frames (miss brief portions of the source video) if you try to do much with your mac while it is capturing. Turning off auto-sleep and leaving the Mac alone is a good idea.I did extensive comparisons with a Canopus ADVC-55 (more than double the price) and decided the quality was just enough higher with the Canopus to settle on it and return the Elgato. It helped that I got lucky and picked up a used ADVC-55 for $25. The quality differences were visible on still frame comparisons of paused video -- though I'm not sure how valid such comparisons are in the real world (comparing playing video is what really matters of course, but sometimes I do like to pause video to check out stills). When playing the video, it can be very hard to see differences that are apparent in still frames. What a really wished with the Elgato is that it had an h.264 @ 2.4 Mbps setting -- I think that would be an ideal balance of quality and storage size. It's likely the current options already max out the processing capabilities of the hardware, or maybe Elgato opted to not provide a bunch of choices for the user to stress over--again, a lot to be said for that. So, I am going with the ADVC-55. Note that it produces DV format video, which has a more complex workflow: - use iMovie to capture the DV stream from the ADVC-55. - wait for iMovie to generate thumbnails (about 10 min for a 120 min video)(You can stop after this step, but only if you want to use up about 10x the storage space of the h.264 format as generated by the Elgato--a reasonable option actually, if you have the space.) [Although if you want to play the video on the AppleTV (I do), conversion is a must.] - decide if you want to crop the overscan, or just ignore it. - using Quicktime Player, iTunes, or iMovie, save from DV to the final storage format (h.264 for me). Note: I found a QuickTime export eliminated interlacing artifacts ("combing"), while the iTunes 10 "Create iPad or AppleTV version" made a file that showed clear combing artifacts on the AppleTV. Both methods created a file around 2.5 Mbps with h.264 compression. This procedure does produce a higher quality video in the end. If I get a chance, I'll post some clips for comparison.

I bought the Elgato capture device to hook up a VCR and import tapes to convert to DVD. It works great for this purpose but the proprietary software left me wanting a little more. When you have "composite video in" (the yellow connector) from a video source like a VCR, it will only display incoming video in a tiny screen (Late 2007 iMac 20" screen on its max resolution, video window was fixed at around 3x4 inches big.)Also, whenever the VHS tape went between video clips (as many home videos do, showing grey "snow" between tape clips) the video viewer would revert to a static blue screen (instead of constantly showing what would have been playing on a TV). This became a little frustrating because sometimes the software would stop importing video if I was to Fast-Forward through minutes of empty tape. To compensate I added a RCA-Splitter from the VCR plug, sending one video stream to the Elgato and another video stream to a TV as a viewer. when the computer software went blue, I could look over at my TV to see whether the snow was gone and I went back to real video.Overall it is a functioning product, that works for what I need it for. As I improve my toolset I'll likely replace it with something like a Black Magic Intensity Shuttle or similar device but for standard definition this product works just fine. If you're looking to ONLY import video from VHS (especially if you have a lot of them as it streamlines the process) or importing from a standard definition home video camera, this software should work well for you.

This is the greatest device! I'm not sure how other's apply this device, but if you are looking to transfer all those old VHS, 3/4 film and 8mm film tapes lying around your house to your computer for editing or DVD look no further! THIS IS IT!THINGS TO KNOW:I'm running a macbook pro from 2011 so it works perfectly with mac. I've been transferring all our old family films to DVD to preserve and edit them. The set up process is simple and application is easy. You pop in the included software disk, download in about 2 minutes and plug in your elgato to the usb on your computer. The video cables on the other end go into any device such as a VHS player or a 8mm film camera. Then you press play on your device and it will use your computer screen as a monitor. You can then press record at any time in the film to capture a standard MPEG file of the section to edit in iMovie or Final Cut Pro X.SIDE NOTE:After your edit you can burn a DVD directly from "Final Cut Pro X" but it's a stripped down DVD meaning it has a play button and scene selection over a solid black or white background. I've been exporting to iDVD from final cut because by some miracle of God I was able to download iOS 10.8.2 Mountain Lion yet my iDVD still works properly. Not sure if elgato has something to do with it or my Macbook Pro 15" from 2011.FINALLY:This is a simple device, built great, zero problems, brings a load of solutions for converting and editing and I am very pleased with it. Totally recommend to anyone who might need to convert some film to digital.

I really struggled trying to find a solution to capture old VHS and mini dv into my Macbook Pro(when I say old, I am talking about valuable memories of my adult children.....VHS tapes from the 1980s showing "first steps" etc). There were three things I needed for this Elgata to work (all of which is clear from their instructions), and fortunately I had all 3:1) A VCR to play the VHS tapes in and output to the Elgato (check - I found one in a storage closet at my office);2) An adaptor as for the VHS-C tapes (allowing me to play them in the VCR) (check - I found one in a case amongst my vast collection of VHS tapes), and3) A mini dv camcorder to output all my old mini dv tapes. This one was the most challenging, as I sold my last mini dv camcorder recently, in favor of the Canon Vixia hg10, which stores all media to an SD card. (Check, borrowed my assistant's camera). The thing that really pleased me about this program is how well it played with a current Macbook Pro, model year 2012, running Mountain Lion. The software that comes with the Elgato has a very simple UI, and once done capturing video you can even trim both sides of the clip. It also allows you to automatically store each tape as a project in iMovie, which I did for later editing.Summary - It works, without a single hiccup. Highly recommend.

Length:: 0:28 MinsI agree- drop dead simple! color coded cables almost hooked themselves up to my Toshiba unit. This unit was exactly what I needed to transfer VHS tapes to my MAC thru the Elgato connector to digitize them. Arrived a few days early, works perfectly, it perfectly played VHS tapes made back in 1987 that hadn't been played since, and the save function is real fast, taking a few seconds for a 1.5 GB movie.I was skeptical about the USB connection being too slow for video, thinking USB... are they kidding??? where's the firewire cable???Well, to my surprise it had absolutely no issues with lag, skipping or anything of the sort I expected a UBS taking video signals might produce. To avoid any issues with hubs or connecting thru the keyboard's USB, I connected it directly.Installed the included software and turned the VCR on and the Elgato, popped the tape in and there was the video in real time ready to start recording. It saves the video in real time, so when you stop the tape and recording, Elgato takes just a few seconds to finish up and save the file name you gave it.I had thought after you stop recording it would take forever to convert or save, but that wasn't the case, it was seconds.Real happy with my Toshiba and Elgato combo, now I can convert all those old dusty tapes I had since 1987 and toss those bulky things out. Here is a sample clip I extracted from the Elgato's mp4 file, converting it to mpg, it's taken from a VHS tape made in 1987 and the video is just as clean as can be, tho some loss Im sure due to the conversion to upload here, and loss of the size as well, but it shows very nicely how it transfers VHS tapes even 25 years old stored in way less than good condition come out.

I was slightly nervous about buying this based on some of the negative reviews and can only say, I'm very happy with the device. As far as I'm concerned, it works perfectly with the Mac interface. In reading the other remarks and reviews a few things are clear. No matter what you're doing on a computer, when it comes to videos, computers often get glitchy. Sometimes closing out of the app and restarting it, a simple disconnect of the device itself, or a reboot of the computer is necessary. I consider that a small price to pay to get the past sixty years of videos converted to digital files. Years ago our 8mm movies from the 60s were converted to VHS so we could not be more pleased to see these as a digital file so no further damage will be done. One piece of advice is to make sure you purchase an external hard drive if you have a lot of videos...about 20 home videos ate up about 250 GB of hard drive space...considering we have 100s of videos, a 2 TB Seagate made sense to begin. And, fyi...sometimes, when the software is saying no signal and you hear the sound from the video, don't be discouraged, keep going with it...upon review all the video images and sound were there.I suspect that this product was made for Apple products and therefore, as is typical, it doesn't "play as well" with Microsoft/Windows. If you notice the bulk of the negative reviews are from Windows users...just my opinion.

The Elgato Video Capture device has many great features that are explained in the description, but there are some that aren't said that this little device is capable of.Pro:-The instructions provided explain exactly what needs to be done in order to get the device up and running quickly.-With supplied RCA cables and using USB 2.0, the device is quickly installed and ready to be used.-The device comes with drivers that are simply installed on your computer for device operation.-This unit is compatible with Windows and Mac OS systems. Easy integration on any system.Cons:-Depending on the application of use, the device can feel cheap since it is made of plastic-Video quality strictly depends on the quality of the source. Old Tapes means Old Looking Digital Video-The instructions don't explain file sizes, so make sure you have plenty of space to store the created video's.I purchased the Elgato to record video taken from our old VHS tapes to my computer so I could make a video backup of them and eventually move them over to DVD. After using the device once, the realization that this could be used for much more than analog capture from VHS/Mini Tape to digital.I started experimenting with it on a couple of video cameras that we have and found that the device could be used to capture video from our camera and used to broadcast over the internet with broadcasting services such as ustream, livestream, justin.tv.Since then, our church as purchased one to use for our Sunday Morning broadcast and haven't had a problem with it since.Excellent Buy for an excellent product.

Pro: Works on my Mac -intel based- transfers video in real time from anything with RCA or S-Video outputs, even other digital devices (DVR). Video quality is good. You can set an auto shut off, so you don't have to sit through stuff.Con: If you are thinking about doing the family high-8's, I started this and about 5 hours through gave up. You are still going to have to watch every second of video you want, no way around it. You are going to want an external hard drive to store the files, think a gigbit for 30 mins of transfer. The editing tools it comes with only lets you cut the ends, but not take out a mid section. You will need to export to imovie to do any real edits. Another issue is the software in the box is way out of date, and get updated right after intstall (this takes about 10-15mins with high speed)Overall I really liked the product, it is small, (looks like a usb cable with a flash drive stuck in the middle of it), does its job. And the best part is it works with my DVR. So if I record a good movie, I can take it on my laptop. Again, eveything you record is in real time, so if you have a vhs that is 2 hours, you need to have the free space and the time to capture. Auto shut offs are at common times like 10-15-30-45- an hour etc. in case you want to walk away. Just don't set no auto shut off and walk away or you are going to record your hardrive full of black video until you figure it out!

I have two main issues with this product. The first is that the Audio and Video did not sync consistently on capture. While some of this can be adjusted after the fact, a good capture utility should be able to sync properly during capture. Secondly, the only capture format available is Mp4. Because of the compression algorithm, there was a very noticeable reduced quality on the captured video. they should not have assumed that the user would want MP4, but instead let them choose the capture format. I would have preferred AVI, and then I could use my own editing software to figure out which compression I would like to use and which best preserves the quality.I was using the PC version on Windows 8. I did not have any driver issues. Perhaps the capture sync and quality would be better on the MAC platform, but I can only speak to my own experience in Windows. Also, the device is not compatible with other capture software when tested. In trying to get around default mp4 capture format I tried several other capture software apps that are know to work well across different types of hard typically (Like AVS Recorder and Arcsoft Showbiz). These would not work with the Elgato capture device.

This product worked well for the first 4 videos then suddenly stopped working. The transfer would suddenly stop and the capture screen would freeze. Elgato customer service sent me the older version of the system software but I had the same problems. I tried using it on my Macbook Air and had exactly the same hassles. I eventually gave up and used it on my Windows PC, which works fine. The transfer quality is not great but acceptable. I used to have a Canopus device... it was okay but produced videos with a lot of jagged edges known as horizontal interlacing. Software exists to improve this problem but again Mac users will be out of luck here. To its credit the Elgato device doesn't seem to have that problem. You may get lucky and the Elgato device won't fail on you like it did me. Elgato really should try and sort the Mac problem out as I'm not the only one who has experienced problems with it. If you are like me and have both Mac and a Windows then chances are the Elgato will be okay and you will get your video transfers done satisfactorily. However, MAC only users should expect a disappointment.

All I was looking for was something to connect my VCR or Camcorder to my computer to digitize my old home movies so I could eventually burn them to DVDs. I installed the Elgato software from the CD onto my Windows 7 laptop, connected the dongle to the VCR then to the USB port on my computer, fired up the software, started playing the VCR tape and away we went. You can see the video on your screen as it plays back, you hit the record button to start recording, then hit the stop button when you are done. You can then trim the video before it finishes encoding the file. Here is my only complaint about the product - the longer your video gets, the less control you have over how accurately you can trim the beginning and end of the video. On a two hour video, you can only trim to about a 10 second window. It would be nice to be able to trim right to a specific frame. I would have given it a 5 if this worked better. Other than that it worked just as expected. I then used a free (and very basic) DVD authoring tool called DVD Flick to take the encoded file(s) and create DVDs with menus and burn them to DVDs. Now comes the hours and hours it will take to go through all the tapes.

I bought this cord to transfer home video's from VHS, VHS-C and 8mm tape to my mac: part in fear of the tapes distorting and disintegrating, and part that I wanted to edit them together to make them easier to watch and share. The output is compatible with QuickTime, and subsequently imovie. I transferred a good number of movies, so I had a quite a large file size when I was done, so I suggest making sure you have enough hard drive space, and perhaps a back-up external hard drive to make sure all of your time is not wasted if something were to happen.Things you need to consider before buying/beginning your tape transfers:- You have to have a camcorder capable of playing the tapes you want to transfer or a VCR with a compatible VHS tape that you can place the tapes in and play. I happened to have both: a camcorder for the 8mm and a VCR for the VHS tapes/VHS-C tapes.- One thing I didn't account for was you have to let the tape run through. Unlike ripping DVDs to your computer, you can't just rip tapes, they have to transfer. This wasn't a problem because the software runs in the background, allowing you to use your computer in the meantime (there is a mute button on the viewing page, as well as an option to automatically stop the transfer after a selected time: you have a 2 hour tape, select to stop the transfer after 120 minutes). If you were planning on watching through the tapes as they transfer, the only downside was the viewing screen cannot be enlarged.- The videos record however they are played: if you fast forward, it will record you fast forwarding; if the tape is deteriorating or distorted already, it will show up this way in the video file.

I bought this device for use with my Windows7 pc, and it works flawlessly. Very easy user interface, just about the easiest device I have ever used. I was literally converting video from VHS to digital in less than 5 minutes. The only drawback is not the fault of the device per se - you cannot do any editing of the video other than trim the very beginning or end of the video. You need to save your digital video, then edit it using a video editing software such as Windows Movie Maker, or some Mac software. But again, I knew this before I bought the unit. My biggest concern before I bought this was whether it would work with a Windows PC, but I had no problems whatsoever. (I don't know if this matters, but I am running Windows7 64 bit with 8GB of RAM)I would definitely recommend this to a friend (and have).

Excellent video quality. I tried numerous video capture options, including pass through on a DV camcorder, and this one was the best quality of them all (the worst being Roxio's VHS to DVD 3). The pass DV through option worked but Windows 8 is apparently very finicky with firewire. (Wish I'd never upgraded to WIN 8).I tried this on two different computers with Windows 8 and it would not work on either one even after I ran it in compatibility mode. The video will display and record and when I click "next" to render the video I get an error message that the video could not be processed. Then, when you close the program, Elgato deletes the recorded video. The workaround is to go to the temporary video folder Elgato utilizes, found at C:\Users\USER\Videos\EVC_temp. Do this when you reach the "trim" option part of the program and prior to rendering. Copy the video with .ts to a new folder. Elgato will delete the .ts video when it closes. You can use VLC player to play this.So I give 3 stars because it is the best video capture option of all 4 I tried, but not 5 stars because of the software issue with Windows 8.
