Purchased this for an elderly parent who is "scared" of digital cameras and must use a view finder rather than the lcd screen because of poor eye sight. I had significant requirements which were: (1) easy to operate "point and shoot" camera; (2) view finder and (3) replaceable AA batteries (so no worries if someone forgets to recharge the battery--because it's not a rechargeable battery camera). (4) light weight (5) small camera. This fits the requirements perfectly. Seriously, stick an SD card and batteries in it and start taking pics. No learning curve required. If you want rechargeable batteries, remember they are available in size AA. It does have an lcd screen too if you want to use it instead of the view finder. Could not be happier with this purchase. It came super quickly too.

I looked all over the internet to find a point and shoot camera with a viewfinder, and finally found this great little camera. It has all of the features I wanted including video with sound, without costing a ton of money. It's size and weight makes it easy to take anywhere, and takes decent photos without a lot of fuss. Perfect addition if you had a SLR camera, if you use a camera infrequently, or for someone just starting on the road to photography.

We all have had the problem of trying to take outside photos in bright sunlight where the focusing screen gets washed out and unusable. The optical viewer on this camera allows the picture taker to actually point and shoot on subjects in the bright sunlight. The quality of the pictures is quite good and the size allows you to drop it into a shirt pocket and forget about it. The use of standard batteries is also a big plus when traveling and not always having access to a power point to recharge a rechargeable internal battery. The only con I have is that when you take a series of flash pictures the recycle time is relatively long and the shutter delay is excessive. This is an excellent camera for someone wanting to take outside pictures while traveling and for its price, it is a great buy. I recommend it highly.

This is one of the few (or perhaps the only) small digital camera that has a view finder. Digital screens are VERY annoying to use in bright sunlight. This one functions like a real camera. It's small enough to fit in your pocket or pack. Since we're riders and hikers, this is a big plus. It takes good pictures. Could use a more telephoto lens. This is the third one we've owned over the last few years because of error operator in dropping it...and a new puppy chewing it.....and got better each time we purchased it..

I take a lot of pictures, literally thousands upon thousands in a years time. I have the Powershot SX130, but the shutter began to stick on occasion, so I purchased the A1400 to get me by until I could save for a professional model. The features that got my attention were the use of regular double A batteries, the viewfinder, video and 16mp. I am somewhat disappointed in the graininess of low-light shots, especially if they are action shots, but in good light conditions action shots, even without a tripod are no problem. Portraits, still life and macro pics are superb, crisp, and the colors are very vivid. The auto program is wonderful and seasoned photographers shouldn't shy away from it. The quality of pictures excel over my older sx130, but the zoom isn't nearly as good. Some were complaining of depth of field, although it won't be as deep as the pro cameras, it can be achieved somewhat in macro or portrait mode. I found that the shutter speed in continuous shooting is adequate and the focus doesn't change if one is tracking the object with a fairly steady hand. Overall, for the price, I think this camera does a fantastic job and exceeds my expectations.

I think the Canon Powershot A1400 is a great little camera. I really appreciate the view finder when out side taking pictures. My old camera only had the window to view the picture you are taking, which in most cases was next to impossible. Now I have a choice when I am taking pictures. Love it!!!!

I choose this Camera because it is a brand well known and the decision fator was the optical viewfinder, very dificult to find in the actual cameras ( I dont know why because it is impossible to have a good vision in the screen with much light).

This camera replaced a Canon Powershot 590IS which malfunctioned after 4 years of use.The new camera takes great pictures and is easy to use. Much better menu and help functions than my previous Canon. I like the ability to use AA batteries and I like the optical viewfinder. The Canon 590IS had an optical image stabilization feature which worked great. The A1400 has a digital image stabilization system which apparently works by taking multiple shots and picking the best. In actual use this is worthless since camera movement typically appears in all the multiple shots. It cost $100 (from Canon) to have my old camera repaired vs $85 for the new one so I got the new one even though I was very happy with the 590IS. If I had realized how much I used the image stabilization I probably would have had my older camera repaired. I wish there was a version of the A1400 with optical image stabilization as I really like the other features of the new camera (better, easier to use menus, on camera help, more megapixels).

My wife's last camera worked well but for some reason quit. She has had difficulty using the viewing screen to see what she is shooting. I bought this camera for her specifically because it has a viewfinder with which she can see what she desires to shoot. Gadgets are not her strong suit but this one does as well as can be expected for her. (Is that the right kind of suit? If not, too bad.)

Yes folks, it's just a digital camera. You can't send pictures via WIFi to your computer or your smartphone, tsk tsk...also you can't imbed the fact that you are in the jungle at such and such lat and long with a GPS app that saps your battery. But if you need a second or third camera and a compact one that works and you can tolerate mostly AUTO, this is a keeper. It's small, looks much better than I thought it would, uses AA batteries - I have rechargeable so but it comes with a couple of starter batteries. For $85, what's not to like. The EVF is small, but useable, and horrors this means you can even use this little camera in sun light. What will they think of next? I agree, a few cirques are true. After flash, it's a bit slow to recharge. It's not a camera that gives you 800 ISO for low light. But it fits very easily in a pocket or a purse, and it's not bizarrely over engineered like the Panasonic I just bought that's basically charming but useless for it's presumed main purpose...taking pictures, the ZS 30 at 3+ times the price.

I gave my girlfriend this camera for Christmas as her Kodak broke. She wanted something simple that would take decent photos she could print, and she had no computer. I have 3 Canons myself and always pleased with them. While I was showing her how to set it up, I found it had many features my current ones didn't, such as 16MP photos, 5X zoom etc. So I bought a 2nd one for myself and WOW, so much power in such a little device. What impressed me most was the HD video. It will be my shirt-pocket pal for quite awhile. The price and the free 8GB card were both bonuses. I was disappointed with the lack of instructions so went to my favorite manual printer, manualsink.com and purchased a 124 page copy. I am a frequent customer of theirs and very satisfied.

I have never written a review of anything. The pictures this camera took were not clear. Also, within one week of buying this camera, the lens no longer opened. Tried to return this to Canon but was told it was non-repairable and my only remedy was to buy a new version for $20 more than the purchase price. Also bought warranty protection offered through Amazon, but the rep for that company has already hinted that they won't cover damage if Canon was supposed to cover it.

I always loved the Canon PowerShot series that took two, AA batteries. They were a good size, high quality, made of metal and inexpensive. Plus, batteries were easy to find and I didn't have to carry a wall charger with me.This new version, while a little smaller, feels like it's made of cheap, lightweight plastic. It's lens movement is slower and less responsive. It's video is of poor quality and the operation is sluggish and awkward/difficult to do quickly. I am very displeased with the direction in which Canon has gone. I have two different, previous versions which I still use today and will continue to use. I guess this new camera would be ok for a kid, as others have said in review. I am so, so, so disappointed.

Compact little camera that takes pretty good quality pictures. At first it seemed a little tinny but it is put together well and the lightness of it may give off the first impression of it being cheap. It is a basic camera compact and easy to use and carry without a lot of bells and whistles. Navigating the menu options is a little sloppy the way they set it up, if you want a compact camera that isn't fancy and takes pretty good pictures and you don't want to spend a lot of money, then this is the one for you.

I wasn't looking for anything fancy so I grabbed this little camera for a good deal to take on a vacation and capture my memories. It did what I wanted it to! I love the viewfinder for taking pictures of bright days on the beach when it is a little more difficult to see the screen. I really like that this is a 16 mp camera.. it's a nice upgrade from my last 8 mp one.The only complaints that I have are:-The menu is a little weird to navigate and I have never had that issue with any other budget point and shoots I've bought-It does not take good lowlight/ night time pictures. I used the flash at night on the beach and the pictures came out just terrible (but the daytime ones were great and looked great on my computer screen when i uploaded them.)-The shell is plastic so I'm not sure how durable it will be in the long run but haven't had a single problem with that yet.All in all if you just want a cheap camera that does the job and has a viewfinder I think this is a safe bet.

I bought this camera to primarily use for taking pictures for online selling. I did the research. Yes, it will mount on a tripod. I understand that it feels a little cheap. But the price was right.My picture-taking setup is in the (chilly) basement and our photo box or booth is lit by fluorescent bulbs. I am having two issues the the camera that both turn out to be normal operating parameters. It is going through batteries rather quickly. That is due to cooler operating temperatures. And the screen image flickers, almost enough to be a migraine trigger for me. That, according to the manual, is an expected effect of the fluorescent lighting. Go figure. I really thought that the camera was defective...I am letting you know in case you had the same plans for this camera.
