I just returned another camera from another company, which required about an hour of reading just to get it to work, and after a month of trying, it never did work right. Too many damn bells & whistles. The reviews on this Canon model looked promising, and I was able to start taking pictures with it in about 5 minutes right out of the box. (Of course I'm a guy, I mess with stuff first & then read the directions) Still, with just a few minutes of reading, the basic functions got figured out & I ran all around the house & yard taking test photos everywhere. Not a bad shot in the batch. Then I found out quite accidently that it was already compatible with my Mac's I-Photo program. Just plugged it in & the photos downloaded, ready for me to process. This one's a keeper.

This little camera is fairly decent. It is VERY easy to use. Lack of features a downside. Wish it had bluetooth to connect to a computer automatically. Does not come with a computer transfer cable. On the plus and down side is the need for AA batteries. Some times that can be a benefit (when you don't have time to charge to get more batteries), and you don't have to worry about loosing your battery or your charger. On the negative side is the extra cost to power the device, and that the charge takes a long time to turn back on. Multiple pictures in a row does not seem possible. The good part of the camera is that it takes good pictures in low light setting. When using the flash you can almost white people out. The image stabilization is a big bonus (especially for someone who has slight tremors. The biggest boon for this camera is the HD video camera with definition up to 1280p. You have an excellent video camera, that can also take pictures.

I love this camera! It's got plenty of perks for a low price, starting with plenty of great shooting modes...or just leave it on auto and enjoy the simplicity of great pics with zero effort. The 720p video was a pleasant surprise as well, I find myself using it much more than I thought I would, it makes videos a breeze to shoot. Battery life with rechargeable batteries is great, with over 250 pics taken before a recharge was needed and being able to use regular alkaline AA's is a nice thing to have when on vacation.I love the size as well, small enough to slip into a pocket, but designed as such as to allow easy one handed use, something I think is essential when using a camera. All told, for the low price, this is a no brainer if your looking for ease of use, great pics, and good video with Canon's great quality added.

I needed a camera with a viewfinder, small size, low cost and an decent zoom. The choices were few since viewfinders are nearly extinct. An LCD screen doesn't cut it in bright sunlight in the snow.I was actually glad it had AA batteries instead of a proprietary rechargeable, but this has been a mistake. The batteries die ALL THE TIME. I used about 12 batteries so far and shot maybe 100 pictures.The features are clumsy and not easy to use. I'm shooting outdoors in cold weather and bright light. I find myself grabbing my iPhone instead unless I need the zoom.The video and picture quality are mediocre at best...not as good as the iPhone and a lot harder to use, especially since the batteries are always dead.Overall, it's disappointing.

I wanted a camera that was reasonably priced, took great pictures easily and was simple to use. Bingo, this is a bullseye. I also loved the change with the SD Card. It is slightly raised above the platform that houses it so that I don't ruin my manicure trying to pry it out of the camera. Lightweight, well designed. Only one thing on my wish list ~ that someone would invent a case that is humidity and temperature controlled so that I won't have to worry about leaving it in the car, RV or taking it out in adverse weather. Otherwise this camera is a definite 5.

My good ol' Elph 7mp finally faded after years of hard use. I miss its steel case and classy style, but this replacement is working out fine. I fail to understand complaints -- this is a nifty little vade mecum (that's, like, Latin, like, y'know) that does what it is designed to do and as advertised. For heavy lifting I have my Canon Rebel (yes, I'm a complete amateur).Last year I bought the Nikon J1 as a pocket camera. It broke. Nikon did not honor its own written warranty, but in compensation I enjoy telling people why it's held together with rubber bands. That is my first and last Nikon. Unless Canon has changed in the home office, they honor their warranties.

I bought this camera for my mom. She is not very tech savvy and always stuck to buying those disposable cameras. But after being picked on by the family this thanksgiving, I decided to bring her into the 21st century. So I picked this one because it has a viewfinder (like her disposable cameras) and took AA batteries so she didn't have to worry about charging it. I was pleasantly surprised when i opened the box and saw that all the buttons and controls were designed in a very simple way. It's like the camera was made for the technologically impaired. It even has a help button with a ? on it. Very simple and easy to understand. Perfect for mom! I only gave 4 stars because it did not come with a memory card or a cable to connect it to the computer. So you have to make a couple other purchases before you can even use it. But the pictures seem to come out fine and she is happy with it!

I bought this camera with hope that I could use my phone's camera a little less, save battery life, get better, quicker photos, etc. Wrong. The photos taken with this camera are mostly blurry images. The shots take forever to take- missing all action shots. The battery dies so fast. I bought this for a cruise, and it took me too long to be able to return it. Stuck with a crummy camera.

I returned it because my first use was at a wedding and I missed every shot because it kept reading "flash recharging" when I tried to take the pic...haven't seen that for probably 2 decades. Also didn't like that you couldn't force the flash, it only had an automatic and an off choice. So if it was bright out but your subjects faces were shaded you couldn't get the flash to go. Glad I tested it before my upcoming vacation!

I was surprised at how small this camera really is. As noted by other reviewers, the flash recharge is slow. Aside from that, it is a great back-up to my larger cameras and has an optical viewfinder which enables one to see in bright light without using the screen. Another bonus is that it only requires AA batteries. No need to carry any recharging devices and converters -- great for travel.

I bought this to replace my Nikkon Coolpix for mostly taking photos while cycling. It is my second PowerShot and it is better than the Nikkon, which are both in the same price range. What I really like about it is the optical viewfinder for times when it is sunny and impossible to see anything on a camera's LCD screen. Both devices have equivalent image quality/capabilities, but because of the Canon's optical viewfinder I am able to frame my photos better with it and, thus, have better images. Some people like the Canon because it uses batteries instead an internal rechargeable battery, though I find that a feature that can be both a benefit and a deficit, especially if you forget to bring along an extra set of AA batteries on a ride, as I did recently when the camera lost power and I missed a few photo opportunities.

I will rate the camera with 3 1/2 stars. I like the fact that it doesn't drink much juice from your battery and that it is compact, light and it has a viewfinder. The fact that this camera has a viewfinder makes me very happy. The controls are fairly easy to handle but it takes a little getting used to. It is a small, compact, inexpensive camera that will take some good photos and not so good photos. I still need more time to experiment with the settings to see how sharp the pictures come out in different lighting situations and should revisit this review in a couple of months. I never expected to get the quality photos one would get with a higher end camera. But then again, higher end cameras have more weight and bulkier to carry around. The A1400 fits easily in your shirt, jacket, or pants pocket.

I bought this camera for my mother and she is very happy with it. It takes great pictures and is easy to use. For the price a good deal. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that I suspect the mini usb port on her camera may be defective. I went thru a fair amount of time downloading software and trying different cables but couldn't get the pictures to download to her computer. I finally decided I couldn't spend any more time on it and set her up with a card reader. Having a view finder is a great feature and one that is getting harder and harder to find. The only other comment isn't really negative as this is the case with most cameras today but who needs 16 mega pixels? Inspite of all the above I would still recommend the camera.

Now the reason that this is a 4 instead of a 5 for a point and shoot camera is that I cannot get rechargeable batteries to work in it. That is a big downsider if you are trying to be green. Surely there is a rechargeable battery that can be recommended that will work. Because the bottom line is that it takes great pictures!

I ordered this camera because although I do not need an expensive camera, I wanted a better camera. Currently I have a Kodak C195 digital camera. Its an ok camera, but the buttons are too small, uses too much battery, no night time pics. I originally was going to get a Canon that was on sale @ Walmart, but that was a come on never in stock. Anyway, I finally decided on the Canon A1400 mostly for the price. What I do like is the viewfinder, and the larger buttons (much easier to use for us older folks). No real improvement on night time moon pics. Haven't used it enough to decide if it is easier on the batteries. It uses two AA, which is good. Also I had to order the usb cable separate, but not a real issue since Amazon sold me one for $5. Overall pix are about the same as the Kodak camera, but this camera is much easier to use. Also I did get a free 8G memory card with the order.

I bought it on sale for $61.99 so I can't really complain but I wish the "Scenes" were more easily accessible, as they were on my old cheap camera. You have to dig into the menu to find it, and by then your subject can have disappeared!Otherwise, I'm amazed at the quality for the price and the manual (PDF) is easy to follow. I downloaded it to my iPad.

I gave this camera a five star rating because my niece raves about how much she loves it, how easy it is to use and what good pictures she gets.Those reasons make it a great gift for the money.I would recommend this product to any beginning photographer or someone who just needs a small camera to keep handy.

Additionally, it is extremely difficult to navigate through all of the features described as one would have to keep scrolling back through various screens in order to get to the desired settings.Picture quality is good and theonly drawback is the inability to switch the resolution. Sometimes, one might want to take a pic in less resolution for uploading purposes.

A quality camera at a bargain price (below suggested retail!), this does everything I could ask of it, and does it well: great photo quality, easy to use, handy features such as the 3 photo 'burst' setting for the self timer. Battery life appears much better than previous models I have owned, and the ability to accept regular AAA batteries without separate cords or chargers is a definite plus. Very pleased with it and would recommend this camera to anyone, whether a first time or experienced user.

This takes horrible pictures. You need to hold the camera perfectly still, click the button without moving the camera at ALL, and then keep holding the camera still till it slowly takes the picture. Unreal! Keep pulling it out to use and think it can't be as bad as I remember. Wrong, it is that bad.

It's impossible to find a small camera at this price point with a view finder, but Canon has done it! The photos are incredible and the batteries last for ever in this camera! I am so pleased with the quality of the photos and the ease of using this camera. Highly recommend!

Photos and exposure settings on the Canon A1400 are superior to smartphones. Having the optical view finder allows for more steady shots; since, my head does not shake as much as my extended arms. This 16 megapixel image quality is equal to my 5 year old $320 Canon A650 with 12 MP, which had received 1st place prizes in amateur photo contests. My image quality comparisons at ASA 100 were made using a tripod with both cameras. Also, how can one beat using light weight 9X-life lithium AA batteries that last for hundreds of photos and image reviews? Furthermore, when comparing the A1400 to the smartphone, there is a flash which reaches 10 feet or more. So you should buy one of these before Canon pulls more models from the market. I recommended that friend buy this camera one year ago, and I wish I had bought mine then too.
