I should have looked at this cameras features before I bought it. I don't buy a camera that does not have some form of optical image stabilization. This camera has a cheap form of image stabilization which is near useless! The camera takes three shots and combines them for a "blur free" picture. I went out on a sunny day and snapped dozens of photos using this feature and NOT ONE was sharp or clear. But I wanted to give this camera a decent try before posting a review telling other people to look elsewhere for a camera,don't buy this one! I went out and used no zoom no digital zoom just a standard wide angle on a sunny day. For a 16mp camera these photos were grainy like 1600 Asa film. This camera fails big time in all areas. And I am no amateur. I have had camera since I was nine. I have a Nikon coolpix p90 and a canon powershot SX10 IS, and a kodak easyshare Z1085 iS. Photos from the easyshare Z1085IS which is only 10mp looks a hundred times sharper than this camera. I don't recommend camera. And I cannot understand how so many can claim it takes good photographs?? My advice if you want sharp photographs the camera must have optical image stabilization. Don't go for digital image stabilization it's cheap and it doesn't work

It's light and compact. It can take pictures in many different situations. The autofocus and autoexposure features are sophisticated and make snapshots easy. It has a viewfinder: if you're shooting in bright daylight the viewfinder is a huge benefit.There are some things you can't do. For instance you can't set the aperture size to adjust the depth of field. And you can't set the shutter speed to adjust for whether the subject is moving. Instead, Canon has given us some low-value features: super-vivid colors, poster-effect, fish-eye, miniature model, toy camera (vignetting), and monochrome. These effects can be managed better by editing the pictures on a computer--that is, assuming you'd want them.Some of the advanced features require more dexterity than I have. You have to hold the shutter button in the half-down position while you press some other button and then push the shutter button down the rest of the way while you're aiming the camera. Also, you have to remember which button has which effect. Or make a crib sheet to carry with you. It makes me wonder if they field tested this thing.What's annoying is that it will stop taking pictures and notify you that the batteries are low when they still have a lot of charge in them. I had the same problem with another Canon point-and-shoot so maybe it's just something about Canons. So you need to carry a spare pair of batteries. After the batteries have a few hours of rest they'll be good to go for a while. When they just don't work anymore you can still use them in other gadgets till they really are used up. Rechargeable batteries don't work because they don't charge up to the same voltage as alkaline batteries.It's handy because of its compactness. You can carry it any time you're out and about: chances are you'll get an interesting picture or two. And the quality of the pictures greatly exceeds what you can get from a cell phone.

Sale price was already down to $59. I had an Amazon credit for $20 too. So I only paid $39 for it. Hard to complain at that price. This replaced a 7 year old Canon that I had. I played around with all the settings for hours until I was able to get the best pictures possible. It was a little bit of a learning curve because I was already so used to my other camera. But this one is pretty nice. I can't say that the pictures are that much better. To be honest they pretty much look the same as my 7 year old camera. However this camera has a setting to take full HD pics which is a major plus. I've seen some people complain about grainy pictures. This is probably because they took it right out of the box and just started snapping pics. There are a few adjustments you need to make on this camera to get good quality photos. First of all, turn the iso setting down to either 100, 200 or 400. This will fix the grainy pictures. The iso setting is jacked way up when you take it out of the box and it makes the pics look like crap. So play around with this camera for 3 or 4 hours before you give up on it. It's not a bad camera at all. You'll just need to test some of the different settings out. This thing has full screen HD video as well. So you are getting both a decent camera and a Video recorder all rolled into one. Definitely worth the price!

I wanted a camera with a viewfinder as my current little nikon is very difficult to see the screen in bright light. I like the AA battery option except it's slow to recycle after a photo. I can live with that but it is annoying. The "shutter" speed is quite slow so if you're taking a photo of anything even moving a bit, good luck. Have a new puppy and can't get a good clear photo even when she's sitting and starring at me. The worst feature is the Quick Time video format. What a giant pain in the butt to get it converted to a format where you can edit and make movies. More software to load on my PC which then insists on being the default software for any videos. It does take good photos and video, seems to be solidly built and is priced ok. Next time I have to be much more careful and make sure the video format is AVI. I recommend looking elsewhere for a small digital camera, but then cameras with veiw finders are a rare breed. Next time I guess I'll have to give up on that feature.

Having just put this thing through a week of testing on a trip out to California, I can report and confirm that this camera only takes acceptable photos in good light. However, I was able to get a nice night time shot in a well-lit marina by turning off the flash and setting the camera on something solid. There is definitely more noise in the photo, but the exposure came out far better than expected. Zooming in to just about any degree, even in good light, significantly adds to the amount of noticeable noise. In video mode, don't even think of using the zoom. Leave it in the widest angle setting or you'll be disappointed in how much noise there is. If you are shooting video into the general direction of the sun and there is any sort of reflection of the sun, say on the water, you will get horribly obvious and obtrusive vertical bars (about 1/8" wide on the LCD) streaming through the image that will totally ruin the shot you were after. The sensor obviously can't handle that sort of exposure. My iPhone has handled similar exposure with no problems at all. Also, in video mode, the optical viewfinder does not show the effects of the zoom button. The image remains at the widest setting no matter what you do with the zoom button. If you plan to use the zoom in video mode, you MUST use the LCD on the back of the camera to frame your shot. If you use the optical viewfinder and then zoom in, you'll have absolutely no idea what your are capturing. This camera should basically only be used for general landscape photos in good light, or perhaps for basic indoor snapshots with the flash. I got it for free and will probably give it away and look for something better to use as a point-and-shoot when I don't feel like lugging my Nikon DSLR along.

I ordered this because of a one-day deal right before Christmas. Combining the sale price and a gift card I had, I think I paid around $20-30 for it, which is great because otherwise I would be very disappointed. The camera uses 2 AA batteries rather than charging by plugging into the wall. There are sometimes significant delays in between being able to snap a picture because it says it is charging the flash. By significant, I mean up to 3-5 seconds in between being able to take a picture. That obviously causes some issues when trying to capture that special candid moment when my pups or my niece do something funny or cute. The picture is also not the greatest - the color is not very crisp and some of them come out fuzzy.On the positive side, I will say this thing seems extremely durable. I've broken two other cameras of this size in the past 3 years. This one seems much more sturdy than those two.I only purchased this camera because I didn't want to go through Christmas and New Year's without one. I always intended for it to be a temporary solution because I am planning on upgrading to a nice SLR - just not quite ready to splurge for it yet.I would recommend this camera for younger folks (teens or early adults) because of its durability.

I was looking for a light weight camera that uses AA batteries, has optical zoom, and most important, a VIEW FINDER! LCD displays are useless to me out in bright sunlight. This camera takes great pictures and is easy to use. I like it better than the Powershot A540 I had because it is lighter than the A540 and it does NOT have any mode switch to break off like the A540 did. My only complaint is the screw hole on the bottom is very close to the battery/memory card access door. It's in a good location for balance, but when I screw my camera stand mounting tab to the camera it comes close to interfering with the access door. But the door still opens and locks so this is a minor complaint. I would still buy this camera again and highly recommend it to others.

My Canon PowerShot SD780IS is lighter and has an optical viewfinder, but it's already been in for replacement of parts, and I was looking for a compact camera with similar characteristics. This camera has a 5x optical zoom as well as an optical viewfinder. Don't understand why manufacturers feel that an LCD screen is an effective viewfinder... they clearly don't work in full sun or bright light. Although I prefer the lighter SD780IS, Canon no longer makes it. The PowerShot A1400 uses AA batteries (or rechargeable batteries), accepts a larger memory chip, and does longer video, so there are some advantages to the larger size... it just doesn't fit into a shirt pocket quite as easily. Photo quality is pretty good for a point-and-shoot camera.

Lost my Canon S200 so I bought an A1400. It was cheap and its quality reflected that. Would have bought a more expensive one but optical viewers are scarce - and LCD are a joke if you are off your couch!!!! But the big nag I have is that nowhere on the Alcatraz type packaging does it say that one needs a memory card. When I drove back 50km and complained to the salesmen he said such little beauties have not come with cameras since 2009 - and I am meant to know that? But in the specifications it gives memory cards but does not say one does not come in the box. Having solved that problem I had to return AGAIN to the store because there was no USB cable in the box. Admittedly it did say it had a USB port but other items nearly always come with what you need to use. So why supply batteries which are obtainable virtually anywhere when memory & cables are not so easy to buy at ones local convenience store. So the phrase "use it out of the box" can not be applied to his little glob of frustration. Next time I buy a Canon I will get the salesman to demonstrate it working before my very eyes. The camera (not Canon) I bought for my daughter had everything included. By the way I would love to get another S200 - so Canon do you have any languishing in your back shelves in the stock room ??This added a little later! I tried to get a "USB" cable. The nearest Source people did not have one, the Japan Camera people did not have one. So I returned to Walmart assuming that if they sold the A1400 to me they would have the cable - but NO. So I gave them all the packaging back with the confounded Canon unusable piece of modern marketing rubbish and got my money back - but not the mileage on my car !!!!!

This is a great little camera if you consider the price and what it does. I could have gotten the cheaper A2500 model but I stuck with this one because of the design which has a better hand grip and the viewfinder unlike the flat a2500 which easily slip out of one's hands. Also feature wise , there isn't much difference between the a2500 and a1400 Picture quality is good for the camera but it does struggle in low light settings. it was also quite surprisingly small and can fit in a chest pocket. video recording quality is good at 720p HD recording with excellent audio recording and playback. it is relatively easy to setup and can just leave it on auto to do it own thing. There are so many settings to toy with ,experiment and configure to get the desired effect. All in all ,I am enjoying my new camera and hope it stay functional. Canon has made and excellent point and shoot camera I implore people to buy it if you need a portable camera.

I got this as a present for my wife.This is a nice upgrade for a real basic point and shoot using the SDHC format with AA batteries. It is a basic camera with less functions than the early series of Cannon digital point and shoots. This helps people who turns a dial when they should not and limits other choices that could cause a picture problem. It is great for those challenged by too many choices!When using such a point and shoot, remember to leave extra room around the subject(s) when taking a picture. With the higher meg pixels, this allows cropping and enough remaining pixels for a decent print.Every where you go you will find AA batteries. This is such a blessing and a great advantage.Finally like most of the modern Cannon digital cameras this uses the SDHC - high capacity SD format memory card. Get a larger one (16GB or better) for vacations and you can not go wrong. This includes the capacity of using the Eye-Fi wireless SD card WHICH IS SOLD SEPARTELY.Why only 4 stars? There is no option for resetting the image size format. Of all the things to remove for simplicity, this is the one thing that should have been left in. Otherwise this could have had a 5 star from me.

It was on sale after Christmas for $58.99, so I thought I'd give it a shot. (No pun intended.) Well, it's a $59 camera. Takes good photos of things that don't move. In good light. With the zoom at 5x, photos are a bit grainy. If you extend it all the way out to 20x (max), the photos are very grainy and have some color separation. The display makes everything look pixelated; the photos look better on the computer than they do on your LCD. As with every camera I've owned, the flash drains the living essence from the batteries in about 5 or 6 shots. The recovery time is slow. If you want to take pictures of scenery or buildings or statues, this camera is probably worth your money. If you want a camera that takes good close-up shots or good shots of things that move, you'll have to spend more money. I got a 12-megapixel Canon PowerShot SX510 HS with 30x zoom for Christmas. $200, but it's a fantastic camera.

Very difficult to use - I find the learning curve steep. So many menu's & the picture's are not that crisp, and the movies are slightly blurred. Does not seem consistant in it's operation - or maybe it's me.Electronics operation seems sloppy. Made in China.Easy to block flash with fingers, as I found out many times. Price was right, but it came with nothing but a strap, so had to buy SD card, Camera to TV cable and camera to computer cable. No instruction book included; download from Canon site & print 134 or so pages if you want a permanent copy.If you are an older person, forget it, or find a digital Brownie. :-)Spend more money & buy something else.

I purchased this camera to have in my pocketbook and to have when I do not want to bring the trusty Canon 40D with the rest of the gear. I also like having the quick access to a camera vs. unpacking the 40 from the backpack, great for quick snaps of the furbabies doing something silly or cute, and snapping some pics for eBay, etc.I liked the ability to put in a pocket and the viewfinder. This was one of the few that had a true viewfinder. I like the AA battery use, no need to carry a charger and a couple betties can always be stuffed in a bag or picked up. The wide angle zoom appeals to me too.I’ve snapped a few pics and uploaded and am pretty satisfied.While nothing will replace the 40 and the interchangeable lens…this is a very good camera for the convenience, ease of use, and the $$. Great little camera for a gift for someone to play and see if they want to get into photography and a DSLR.

I love this camera. "Science News" ran an article proving that it's possible for a human being to actually fall in love with an inanimate object. Well, I'm in love! I bought an earlier version of this camera (A1200) several years ago. Though I have a DSLR system including two Canon cameras (20D and 10D) and 17-40L, 200L, 70-200L top notch lenses, I always grab my little Canon A1200 when I go anywhere. This little jewel has a real, bright, "tunnel" viewfinder as well as a large (2.7"), brilliant LCD. This is not to mention a five power Canon lens! Frankly, I see this camera as the little brother of the pro Canon G series -- I have the G10 model and the A1400 almost matches it when its photos are enlarged to 8" X 10". Don't underestimate the capabilities of the A1400's 1/2.3 sensor! Take a portrait of a lovely young girl and see every eyelash, every hair, every gleam in her eyes.

I would rather still have my Canon A620 but it E18'd recently while using it outside on a very cold day. I miss the swivelable view screen and the speed gained by having 4 AA batteries.My priorities in deciding on the A1400 were 1) an optical view finder and 2) AA batteries. CONS - The A1400 documentation was minimal. There was no printed owner / operator manual. The flash is slow to charge because it uses only 2 AA batteries. PROS - The camera is small enough to stick in my shirt or jacket pocket. That makes it easy to carry. This is a great camera for general use. Great for a trip to the zoo or a hike in the woods. The images are big so you can zoom in and capture excellent detail. It has a battery charge indicator that comes on when the batteries get low.The A1400 does not have the same options as the A620 but for the price the A1400 does a good job.

I bought this camera with the intention of carrying it with me all the time. I never expected it to be the same quality as my DSLR, but wanted something portable, that if it got ruined, wouldn't make me cry. Best thing about this camera - a viewfinder. I've only printed out 4x6 photos so far, but the pic quality is just fine. Similar menus as my other Canon Cameras, so easy to get the hang of , even without a manual. I know a lot of other reviewers complained about there not being a cord included in the box, but most computers now days have a card reader, and you can buy one pretty cheap if your computer doesn't have one. I haven't used a cord to download pics for our last 2 computers.I almost gave this a 4 star rating, but have had issues with the retractable lens - sometimes it doesn't want to zoom. So far if I turn it off & on again I can get it to work, but it's annoying. Other than that, I think it is a great little camera, especially for the price.

This is my second A1400. I returned the first because of "change battery" problems....after a few minutes, the camera acts as if the batteries are exhausted and it shuts down. I returned my first purchase to Canon (it was out of the Amazon 30-day return warranty), with little problem, they sent me a new unit. The problem is that the second unit has the same problem...it's just useless. I originally had an A1300, which I liked, but I dropped it and damaged it. This newer model certainly needs some sort of firmware fix. It does have a viewfinder, the only pocket camera that does and the pictures it takes (when it's able to take a picture) are fine. Also, the Canon photo software is clunky and too complicated, another step downward. I think I'll spend more money and go back to a Nikon.

I bought this camera to replace a Canon Powershot A2500. That camera gave me too many blurry photos. I use this for work purposes, and I don't get paid for blurry photos, and I can take anywhere from 100 to 340 photos in one day. It doesn't have the dial with all the optional shooting positions which I never use. It's a basic use camera which is all I need. The menu is easy and readable. I did save the cord to upload photos to the pc and it's what I use. This camera did not come with one. And I do use the zoom and the pictures come out good. For a point and shoot, I would recommend it.

So far so good! I love it, lots of bells and whistles. If you get this Camera USE a case don't stick it in your pocket (any of them) or drop it in a purse. the telescope lens will get dirty and stick on you, causing it to shut down and not work, do not take pictures in a sand storm. it will make movies audio is good, heck for the price you can't beat it. just keep it out of harms way.buy the Energizer ch4wb4 recharge Smart AA/AAA charger with the NiMH batteries, they last 30% longer than any others on the market, with my 16GB card and those batteries I filmed for a 1 1/2 with audio, try that with anything else.only con -Amazon sent me a broken one first, but they quickly sent me a replacement camera. jard is shipping and it was bubble wrapped, Lens Shut down, so you need to treat this camera like a camera not a ceil phone.

I'm sending this camera back. The pictures are OK, blurry at times, but pretty much what I expected for the price. The AA battery feature isn't as cool as you'd think since it sucked the batteries dead in just one day. That is not sustainable for me. The camera feels pretty cheap, but worst of all, the flash charge between pictures is ATROCIOUS!! I was trying to take pictures of my fast moving one year old on her birthday (the reason I bought this camera now), and the flash would take 10 seconds to charge between pictures. She'd be done and gone by the time I could take a picture.Again, I'm returning this. Don't waste your time with it. I think I'll spend a bit more and get something of much higher quality.

Took me months to get the hang of this little guy. At first couldn't take a decent picture or figure out what to adjust or where. Had downloaded the manual, but it wasn't helping me a lot. Menu items appear for some things and disappear for others. I'm liking it more and more as I get familiar with what can be done -- understanding what circumstances go with what menu choices, when to switch to automatic, when not to use some thing that distorts the color of the scene, etc. Changed to rechargeable eneloope AA batteries that last a lot longer per use than the alkaline. That is helping me go through the screen prompts and not worry about running down batteries. Gives me time to learn the different menu combinations. Still trying out some features to get the hang of the whole thing, but my pictures are getting much better.

This is the 3rd Powershot I've owned in the last 4 years or so.I manage to break or damage these about every year or two, so I suppose that's a data point. I use these cameras constantly, and don't think another brand in the same class of camera would do any better in terms of robustness. The lens covers and mechanism that opens and closes the lens have been the point of breakage on both previous cameras.I prefer Powershots mainly because I'm now pretty familiar with using them. I like the optical view finder, because I have trouble seeing the digital screen that most cameras provide as the only way to frame the shot. If you are not over 45 yet, you will understand that remark later in life.The camera has a large bundle of features, most of which I've never used. Once I've configured it, I don't like to mess around with settings in the field, and this camera does the basics without needing any more attention.I think these are a good value for people needing high quality snapshots of action events. There is a frustrating delay between pushing the shutter button and capturing the shot, which gets worse as the batteries wear out and when the flash is needed. However, this has been consistently observed on other brands of camera as well.I take ALOT of pictures, so I prefer the AA batteries used in this camera, which can be replaced in the field. 2 AA batteries will cover me for about 200 photos, which is plenty good for one event. I carry a couple spare sets of AA's in the camera case, and consider myself ready for anything. The camera is compact and its case fits comfortably on my belt, or in some cases hooked to a belt loop with a mini-snaplink.

I am a novice at photography. Therefore I felt this camera lacks a good owners manual. I have a friend who knows camera's, and in in a few moments he was showing me things this little camera could do that was way beyond my expectations.However the photos of the unit, when I purchased made it, led me to believe it was larger. Therefore I was very surprised at how small this is. (easily fits in a shirt pocket) However don't let its size fool you, as it appears very capable this far! Initial photos look promising.
