Holy crap is this a good camera. My trusty Canon G10 went to the big camera graveyard in the sky this past Autumn, having not survived a dip in an Alaskan river. I loved that camera, and after buying a Lumix LX-5 to replace it (and returning the piece of junk) I decided to wait for this camera, and it turns out to have been worth the wait. It's everything I want in a compact camera. As much as I loved my G10 for the quality of its images, the sharpness of its lens, and its substantial zoom, I love the S100 even more, perhaps the most because IT ACTUALLY FITS IN YOUR POCKET. I could never quite do that with my G10, and that bugged me. This little bugger will slip into a pants, shirt, or suit jacket pocket effortlessly. I'm in heaven. The optics are great, and I can't tell you how much a difference the F2.0 lens makes in taking sharp, gorgeous images in lower light situations. Admittedly, you lose that 2.0 aperture pretty quick as soon as you hit the zoom button, but I can live with that. I think the color temperature sensor is not as good as the G10 (I find I have to make more adjustments in Lightroom on the images from the S100 than I did before) but it's pretty darn good most of the time. The macro is great, and coupled with that fast lens, I'm taking some of the best food photos of my life now. While I've only got 5x zoom now instead of 10x, I'm finding that I don't miss it all that much.I am also very, very pleased with the speed of this camera in all respects -- start-up speed, zoom speed, and most importantly image capture speed. Probably 3x-4x faster than my G10 at least, with a high speed SD card. After messing with the lens cap on the LX-5 for the two weeks I had it, the S100 felt like a miracle with its nicely shielded lens, that opens quickly and quietly. The LCD screen is amazingly bright and crisp (and big!!) and I don't miss not having it articulated. I wondered whether I'd miss the optical viewfinder, and the answer is a decided: nope. Seems I can easily live without it.I've got a photography degree, and when I'm taking serious photos I've got 20-30lbs of camera gear to lug around. But when I'm not out shooting seriously, this camera is everything I could possibly want it to be.Highly recommended for anyone who doesn't want to compromise image quality while maintaining the slimmest profile and weight possible.

I bought the black one at price $279.99. If you are looking for a point-and-shoot camera, I don't think you will find a better one at this price. S100 has a larger sensor (1/1.7) as compared to majority of point-and-shoots (1/2.3). It captures a rich and deep color set. Good enough at low-light conditions, has a good manual control, has a built-in HDR, not the best one, but anyway, it does have, and also supports RAW image format. So in general, I consider this a great purchase. Before this one , I owned canon A630, which was I think even better, though an older model, but I dropped it one day, and some functions did not work properly. After a long research I found s100 to be most promising camera under $300, and I do not regret. The only drawback that I've seen yet is the short flash range, anyway it is not a problem for me, as I try to avoid using flash at all. Hope this helps.

I had this exact camera stolen while I was visiting Quito, Ecuador. I was heartbroken, because this camera had become a part of me. I travel a lot and live in a beautiful place and it was pretty much my constant companion. Before buying it, I had researched extensively. I called my local camera shop which is highly respected in this location close to Yellowstone National Park and all its photographic opportunities. They recommended this as the top camera for a traveler, serious (but not professional) photographer. It has consistently taken magnificent shots all over the world. I have put together super slide shows and have many publishable photos. I love the GPS function when you are traveling. After the mugging and loss of my camera I began looking for the replacement and most amazingly I found it in silver (the first one was black, because I could not find the silver - more money as well). The price on Amazon right before Christmas beat any price I could find and was $200 under the price at the camera store. I highly recommend this camera. It is compact, but packed with features and takes high quality photos you can be proud of.

I've taken a few hundred photos with this camera so far and I like it very much. I wanted a point-n-shoot that had manual overrides for when I wanted to get creative and also a fast lens for low-light capabilities. Exposures have been mostly right on. Shutter lag, start-up time and shot to shot response are reasonably fast for this type of camera. Very good build quality and fits in the hand nicely. Many more manual capabilities than what most folks will ever need or discover. I've not even turned on the GPS, but nice to know it's there.Minor gripes are the pop-up flash but I usually keep it turned off and crank up the ISO. Battery duration is a little weak but carry a spare if you're on safari. Thanks Amazon for a great price! I have several cameras and this one (IMO) is the best point-n-shoot you can find for under $250 and I will be reaching for it often.

Got this housing for my S100 and tested it empty in the laundry room sink. Sealed just fine. Took it on 14 dives the next week in Cozumel (I took it to 96 ft without any problems) and the thing performed like a trouper. I had access to every control I wanted (including the ring wheel on the front), and the flash diffuser worked just fine for closeup shots in the clear water (probably wouldn't use it where there's a lot of backscatter. The flash sat high enough to trigger the photosensor on my strobe. It is lightweight and positively buoyant. My strobe tray was enough to make it roughly neutrally buoyant. Since I hold the housing with my right hand, I really like the ring wheel control on the left (Ikelite puts theirs on the right, making it tough for me to use on the fly).I have used Canon's underwater housings for the past 5 years (I have the WP-DC4 for my SD600) and they perform very well (I've taken the DC4 to 130 ft with no problems). They take a lot of knocking around but never seem to get too scratched up, even though I keep them clipped to my BDC with a power retractor (they extend far enough to use the camera, and let you release the camera without worrying about it floating off, but you need to get the heavy duty kind for gauges and cameras). There are only two gripes on this housing from me (why 4 instead of 5 stars). First, I have a Fantasea BigEye dome for wide angle correction. It is held in place with 4 bungees, but the housing only has 3 attach points. I had to epoxy a small D-ring to the housing for the 4th attach point. The second (and very minor) gripe is that the closure latch has a bit of play in it when closed. At first it made me think I hadn't closed the housing properly, but it is just some benign play in the hinge that doesn't affect the seal. A final note in case anyone from Canon is reading, a fiber optic port would be a great addition to this housing! Overall, a great housing that I'm glad to own.

Well I read all the reviews and this camera sounded great but it has not been 12 hours since we received the camera and we already have a "lens error". We took less than 20 shots and 1 short video. We were unable to get the camera restarted and were not able to get the lens to retract for return shipping. I thought Canon fixed this problem but I guess the didn't. I'm glad Amazon has a good return policy because we already sent it back. We are going to replace this one with the same and hope it was just a flaw, but I am having my doubts. I'll update this when we test the replacement.I'm keeping my fingers crossed because we have a few Canon products and have never had a problem with any of the other items we own.update: we decided not to take a chance on this model again and upgraded to the s110 which has excellent reviews so far. It costs a little more but we won't have to spend our vacation hoping that we don't get any lens errors.

I bought this on a whim to protect my favorite point and shoot (S95) from scratches and scuffs. This does protect well, but is not as good ergonomically as I was hoping. The cover connects to the camera via the tripod screw on the bottom of the camera. Very secure, which is nice. The bad part comes when you want to change the battery or SD Card and you have to unscrew and remove the case to access the port on the bottom of the camera. Also, the upper part of this case (that covers the camera top, back and front) will be flapping in your kisser during any shooting. It can be removed quickly with a couple snaps, but then you have a separate chunk of leather that you need to store somewhere. Not very convenient. On the positives, I do like the long leather strap that allows you to hang your camera from your neck - not bad if that is how you want to transport it. Assuming you have the cover flap off, it keeps the camera very close at hand for making a quick shot.Personally, I have found that a small neoprene belt case is more convenient for me. It holds an extra battery and SD card and also provides easy quick access to your camera. The camera will be 'naked' when using such a case, but I still think it is much better ergonomically.

I own a S95 (and a Nikon D300) and I'm buying this camera mainly for mom who wants to upgrade her old camera.I love my S95, so I had great confidence that Canon would deliver a great successor. So, without playing much with the S100 myself, I hand over the camera to my mom, and expect her to be able to take great pictures by herself as I have done with my S95 in my daughter's birthday party -- indoor.First shot, auto mode, flash pops up, click, picture over-exposed. My first though was that my mom's hand must be blocking the exposure light sensor. So, try again. Still over-exposed! Ok, this time I try it myself, over-exposed. Hmmm..., 4 feet away from the subject might be a little too close. OK, try again. 3 meter away, what!!! Over-exposed again! Luckily, I still brings my S95 (wife use) and D300 (I use).Go home. I looked up all settings under auto mode. There is no control for exposure under auto mode. Ok, how about flash? There is red-eye correction and red-eye lamp. The point is, there is no control for flash intensity. I take a snap of my living room. Again, flash pops up and picture over-exposed -- this time, it's at least 3 stops over the correct exposure. I bring out my S95 to compare -- same auto mode settings, flash pops up, click, and picture looks great! I can't believe it! This is the most basic function that must work! Let me try again... in "P" mode everything was default (after a "reset all") -- set to auto flash, half click, flash pops up, full click, flash fired, picture looks great!Ok, so it's at least not a hardware bug in Canon's part -- the flash intensity did not stuck at high, but is that good enough? No way! How can Canon let this basic function slip through quality control?Luckily, Amazon has great return policy. S100 is going back to Canon. I'm eying at Nikon P310 now, anybody?Potential buyers beware!

Got this camera as an anniversary gift. Didn't work straight out of the box - LCD screen totally black (power button on, menu on, screen black, pictures black). Unfortunately we were out of the country on holiday and missed the amazon 14 day return policy. Canon was great about the repair - I sent it in to the canon repair in Surrey, and they returned it in a couple of weeks supposedly fixed. It worked for a couple of weeks great. Then we went on holiday to the US to celebrate our engagement party. We arrived only to find, guess what, the camera wasn't working again. Same fault behavior - black screen. We had to take our engagement party pix with an iPhone! so furious and sad, I'll never get that day back or a chance to reshoot those memories. When I called Canon, the guy I spoke to said that usually if your camera goes faulty 3 times in 1 year, they will give you a new one, but since mine broke twice in two months, they'd probably replace it anyway. So I sent it in with high hopes and a long letter. Just got it back, it has a couple of more parts replaced. No comment, apology, and certainly not a replacement. I'll never be able to travel with this thing without a backup Nikon or Sony, or trust it to work when I need it. I've been a canon owner since I was 18 but never again. Enormous, enfuriating waste of time and money. Canon needs to realize they're not just dealing with a defective product, but people's special moments and memories. Buyers Beware!!

I have the S100, had the S95 and S90 before it and took magnificent images with both S90 and S95. I'm a professional photographer, have both a Canon 5D and 5D2 and many high end L lenses. I've had many Canon Elphs before the S series as well as various G series bodies. The S90 was a spectacular camera, the S95 improved on it and I was very much looking forward to this camera because of improvements with ergonomics and the extra 4mm in wide angle at 24mm. In fact, I find distortion on the edges of 24mm unacceptable and have zoomed to 28 for much of what I've done with this camera.I have not taken a sharp picture yet with this camera and I have plenty of experience with both this line of cameras and with photography in general. I don't know what's causing the blurriness, probably not the CMOS sensor, more likely the lens, but I agree with others giving this camera a less than wonderful review that the IQ in the S100 is not up to snuff. It may be a copy to copy issue, I don't know.Time will tell if this is a copy to copy issue (a few bad apples) or something affecting all copies of this camera. I do know that I'm not going to keep the copy I have, I'm returning it and have ordered (re-ordered) an S95 as they're quite inexpensive now at $229.If Canon comes out with a statement about this and explains that it was a few bad apples I'll re buy the camera in a second, it's exactly the camera I want and if the IQ is just as good as the S90 and S95 I'll be happy as the ergonomics have improved considerably.Update:I ordered a second copy of this camera from Amazon and the problems of the first are completely gone. I'm guessing it's a problem copy to copy with some lenses.I particularly like having a 24mm lens in this camera and the extra 4mm of wide are very meaningful for what I use this camera for (hiking, landscape images). It's macro mode allows closer focusing than the S95, it will shoot at higher ISO with less noise, or, another way to put that is at the same ISO it exhibits less noise than the S95. The ergonomics of the buttons and case have been improved considerably and I'm now quite happy with this camera. I was able to buy (re-buy) an S95 for $229 on Amazon when they were discounted heavily during the holidays and I'll keep that camera as a travel backup but I plan to use the S100 as my primary hiking and travel camera now, the images I'm getting from it are excellent.

And I ordered another one just like it because I loved it so much. But then I returned it because my photographer friend had me buy a Nikon Coolpix 510 locally off Craig's list for the same price. I love all the things I can do with the Nikon, but I miss carrying my camera in my pocket. I love the zoom I have on the Nikon and the ability to have control on the speed and light of how the photos are taken, but I miss carrying my camera in my pocket. So if you are an amateur photographer, this Canon PowerShot is great. My grand daughter has one and loves it, but now she takes photos with her iPhone. I love my Nikon, and I'm still learning how to carry it, but now I also carry a tripod, so what's a camera? This is one of those, I'm in a dilemma reviews! Even my photographer friend takes more photos with his iPhone (but he's also retired now) but on the other hand, he has his tripod and Nikon very handy. Photography is definitely a kind of drug!

I read a lot about this camera before buy it.I wanted a fast, point & shoot, small, wide angle, with good picture camera. I almost got it all.I want a point and shout. I don't want to know photography. I just need a camera to capture what my eyes like to see, and let the camera do the rest. I don't want to wast time to change settings! I have two kids to look after during my trips ;)Having said that, I'm not happy because three things:1 - unacceptable distortion on wide angle. People's faces will be deformed if they are captured close to the last third of the frame;2 - The same old Canon's problem: tendency to overexpose creating pictures brighter than the real life. I find it hard to believe that in this 2012 we don't have technology to do real time HDR (high dynamic range).3 - The auto white balance (WB) does not represent real life. I have to use P mode and create my own WB (wasting time). So, unfortunately this is not a "point & shot", because if you do so, the pictures you will get are different from the landscape you saw: the grass will be less vivid; the sky might by white, and so many other surprises. But can this camera take good pictures? Of course, but not in Auto Mode. So, far from a "point & shot".

I have had an S90 for years. my mom and I also split the cost of an S95 a few years back. I bought this one for my girlfriend since she wants to learn more about photography and her old camera was partially broken already and needed to be replaced - and the price was right since the S110 had just come out. Like its predecessors, it is a powerful, versatile camera on which one can learn the foundations of photography, as well as take some great photographs. the raw setting allows high end post processing, which I don't deal with yet, but I have taken the raw files to high end print labs and the results are great - far better than jpegs. the large aperture allows great low light photography, which is a huge plus. I look at it as a cheap dslr that fits in a pants pocket - doesn't take dslr quality pics, but you can take it places a dslr won't go since it is pocketsize. one day I'll be able to afford a dslr and lenses, etc. until then I'll continue to rock this family of cameras and love it.

I got this to replace a Lexmark all in one I had which gave me a lot of problems over the years as far as the software was concerned. This one seems a lot more reliable and appears to function without all the glitches found in the Lexmark.I am using it with my Apple SNOW LEOPARD 10.6 and just set it up for my Windows 7 laptop as well. It works very well with both. I have it set up to be wired until I get a wireless modem and once I do that I will set it up to be hard-wired to Apple and wireless for laptop and hopefully it will work not too sure right now if I can do both.In addition to working without a lot of glitches or problems I have to compliment Canon for its customer service. How rare it is nowadays to call and without a lot of trouble actually talk to a real life honest to goodness human being. I got my question answered quickly and was really happy with the availability of customer service though they are not 24/7. They also have very quick turnaround time for email support. I find this customer service policy one of the top "Pro's" for this printer. I am soooo tired of the runaround I get with almost everything and I'm glad its not the case with this Canon, not that I have needed phone support except for once while I was getting used to it.The one "con" I have - its quite large, larger than I thought and planned for but I can live with it. I find the paper sheet feeder a little harder to get loaded but maybe that's because I can't see the actual loader tray guides without turning the printer around and because of its size I'd rather not do that. It is a pretty noisy printer as far as the functions such as grabbing a sheet into the printer but its just me so its not bothering anyone. It printing speed is pretty good overall.I'm not too familiar yet with the on-screen controls but they seem to work the few I have tried. I think as I become more familiar / knowledgeable it will be even better. This printer AND THE EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE have sold me on Canon and that's not an easy sell. It's reliable and any questions are easily answered, thankfully by a LIVE/NON-RECORDED Person - fantastic.I only gave it 4 stars because of the size - largest printer I've had but other than the size it would be 5 stars.

I've been a loyal Canon customer for years -- all of my printers over the past 15 years, and a couple of cameras, too. So when my last printer flaked out, I decided to go with another Canon. I originally picked this printer because of the Wi-Fi connectivity, and the fact that it included a scanner. Unfortunately, I feel like I can barely give this printer a passing grade. (And I'm writing this after having one for almost a year...)THE GOOD:- Set up was easy (even getting it onto the Wi-Fi)- Overall image quality is acceptable, and sometimes even pretty good.- Print operation is quiet, and pretty quick for an ink jet.THE BAD:- It goes through ink fast. Like **really** fast. The cartridges allege to be rated for approx. 400 pages each -- which I don't think is all that good to begin with -- but they they seem to run out around 250 pages.- ...which would be tolerable if the cartridges weren't so expensive.- ...and which is made worse by the fact that you have to perform some printer voodoo to get the printer to accept non-OEM ink cartridges. (This has been such a pain that I gave up on it entirely.)This printer has been such a train wreck that I'll be looking at other brands for my next printer. I may even dump this one before it breaks, it's that annoying.

I bought this as a replacement for another Canon. Sorry I did. The scanner is great. However, after 2 weeks of hard use through the automatic feeder, a line developed about 1.5" from the margin. It will not disappear no matter what I try. However, if I lay anything on the glass, it does a fabulous job.The downgrade really comes with the inability for this printer to use ink properly. The cartridges go way too fast - I mean, after 20 or so pages of regular print outs, the ink is gone. It's ridiculous. Even when I had one cartridge refilled at Costco, it only lasted for 5 pages. So, if you want a decent scanner, this will work. However, for a one-person household who rarely prints, this doesn't even fit the bill.

For anyone who does not think the S100 does not have much to offer over the S95 I have two words for you: "24 mm". I have used 28mm (field of view) equivalents for quite a while now and a recent experience with a 35mm equivalent camera reminded me why. It left me wondering how people get by with such constricted fields of view - hardly anything could fit in the frame. This 24mm wide angle has opened a whole 'nother point of view! Going from a 28mm POV to 24mm is as big a step as going from 35mm to 28mm.My retired Canon SD870IS is a marvelous little wonder that was my foray back into the world of fully automatic cameras. It has served extremely well and with almost enough adjustments to do everything required of it. It is now severely battered, has a huge grey splotch on the lcd screen (known problem) but still produces excellent results. I've always looked at the S95 and thought longingly, 'If only it had a 24mm like the Panasonic LX5.' Conversely I looked at the LX5 and thought, 'If only it had HDR and was as compact as the S95.' That way I could safely justify staying away from either. Well, with the S100 Canon called my bluff! From very limited use, impressions are as follows:This camera blows the 870IS out of the water in terms of responsiveness.Every time I power up and look into the screen it is like ,'Whoa, that is a dramatic view!' That's 24mm for you..In auto mode you will almost never run out of light for a decent flash-less shot.In video mode, the 870IS would blur out when zooming in on a subject. The S100 refreshingly retains autofocus. The various scene modes are fun to play with.Cons:My hunch is that the S100 does not produce quite as vivid results as the SD870 when left to its own devices. May need to play around with it more.I preferred to take pics on my SD870 at 3MP resolution. With the S100 its either 2MP or 6MP+The zooming action is super-fast, which is not such a great thing in video mode when you want a more gradual zoom. That Canon added a 24mm to this camera is insane. It is worth ten times the paltry increase in MSRP over the S95. C'mon people, you know how exponentially valuable a wider field of view is! This camera is a classic case of 'give them an inch, they want a mile.' Canon has done a such great job of stuffing everyone's wishes into this sock that they are left digging for excuses why it does not do more. Enjoy this beauty!

My old Canon S5 IS kicked the bucket, breaking my heart. I loved the zoom and the feel of that camera in my hands. After much research (bascially asking the camera geeks in my life for advice) I kept hearing about this one. The Canon S100. It's small. Like fits-in-your-pocket-with-no-worries small. But it's powerful. After sitting down with my camera guru friend, who showed me just a fraction of the ins and outs of this baby, I was suddenly excited. You can actually manage the strength of the flash. No more washed out ghost faces ... you can take pictures where they look like PEOPLE. And low light is a breeze, making natural looking photos with no blur. The only disappointment is the zoom, which as my friend said, use your feet and walk forward. :) I couldn't afford a mega camera with super zoom to replace my old one, but this is seriously all I need for pictures of the people I love in my life. I highly recommend it.

I have owned lots of cameras in my life including dozens of digital cameras. If I had to have one camera only, I would probably choose the S100. I usually have a pocket point and shoot with me most of the time, and this replaced a Canon SD780 that I have used for almost 4 years. The S100 is a little bigger but it does so much more. The last small camera I owned with optional manual controls was the Canon S80 and it was 3 time thicker and not very pocketable. This camera has more features than most people would use or even know how to use, therefore it's not a good choice if you are just going to point and shoot for the Kodak moment shots. The extra range of the optical zoom is well appreciated also. Low level light is less of a problem because of the higher ISO range. So, if you want to spend this much on a small camera and you will use the extra features, this is the camera to have.

I love the flexibility of this "semi-professional" camera. Night shots are great as is quality. Beware that early models have a defect that in high heat and/or humidity, a piece breaks and you can't close the lens. Canon fixes this defect free of charge. Unfortunately this happened when I was in Panama for the first time but at least I had a backup camera. My biggest complaint is the autofocus. I have returned it to Canon twice and they say that all S100's are made this way. In video mode, the sound of the autofocus as it moves back and forth comes out on the audio track of the video and at times you can not hear what you are trying to record. I have the SX-210IS which is similar but the noise level is much lower, almost unnoticeable. There are other Canon's that don't have ANY noise from the autofocus in video format.

I got this camera for a pretty good deal, and it's just as I expected: very light (super light), Great specs, and fairly easy to use. I'm not a super-heavy camera geek, but I'm wanting to learn and this camera is friendly enough to start. The major downside is that it does NOT come with an SD card. It does take the following, however, so if you are to purchase this, you should buy it with an SD card if you don't have one already:SD memory cardsSDHC memory cardsSDXC memory cards (must have at least windows 7, or upgraded XP)Eye-Fi cards (although this is not guaranteed.)I'm pretty happy with this right now--I am going to purchase a case, SD cards (SDXC), and another battery (I heard this one drained pretty fast--doesn't last a full day of heavy shooting).Otherwise, I can comment on the texturized grip on the camera, which I like. It's definitely a compact and light camera. The "getting started" manual isn't for beginners--there isn't going to be much on ISO's or shooting tips. These are expected knowledge, so be aware. That said, this seems like a handy camera. Can't wait to give it a whirl.

I've had the s95 for over 2-1/2 years, and finally wore it out (after dropping it and abusing it, keeping it in my purse or pocket on a daily basis; I've taken it on dozens of trips- even international, and taken over 10,000 pictures with it). When I realized it was dying, I started looking into the newer model. I decided to try the s100 because it was cheaper yet still got excellent reviews. I am SO glad I did- it does everything that my beloved s95 did, plus some improvements! I love the HD video, the fact that they fixed the dial on the back so that you cannot accidentaly change the settings, and I love the grittier feel and the thumb hold which makes it easier to hold.

I love this camera. I still use my DSLR when I want sharp pictures that I can only get with real optics, but this compact has redeemed the class for me. I was recommended this camera by several professional photographers and I am not disappointed. The manual mode delivers, and the RAW images are a big advantage. The compact size allows me to carry around easily and to take shots that I would otherwise look obnoxious with a full size DSLR.The ISO performance is some of the best in its class, and the price is on point. I'm glad I pulled the trigger on this and would definitely recommend it to other photographer hobbyists used to the features of a DSLR.

A great point and shoot but with limitations in low light long exposure. This camera is almost worthless for shutter speeds slower than 1/4 second at any ISO if you like night photography even under a full moon, Handling it is a great focal range, lens is resonably sharp but not very contrasty, compared to a 12MP 5d the pictures are night and day better from the full frame and easily identifiable even by a complete non picture person. Where this camera shines, is it is in your pocket when you have no other camera, and sometimes, if the light is right you can still get an amazing picture or 2. Now that sony has a large senor competitor to this camera, I think its reign has come to an end, but if it can be had for point and shoot pricing rather than prosumer pricing, I would still get this camera, make sure you purchase an aftermarket grip for it and at least one if not 2 extra batteries. I like the video and IS too they are both quite useful.

I'm not much of a photographer (and definitely not tech-oriented) but I needed something for pics that would easily load onto my computer for Craig's List, relatives -- with the eventual goal of taking macro pics of jewelry. A camera that wouldn't cost an arm or leg. And wanted a camera small enough to put into a pocket. The PowerShot came highly recommended on the web, so when I saw it at a really good price, I jumped on it. Has lots of extras that I haven't had time to read up on yet, but it's pretty easy to pick up and just take general pics. Despite my talent for taking pictures of "what's that?", it does a great job just using the Auto feature. I'm sure that in the hands of someone who knows what they are doing, it would be even better. More camera than I probably need right now, but eventually I'll get a handle on all the bells and whisles.

I love this camera a lot, I bought it to replace my s90 that was stolen on vacation.I read that the s95 is better than the s100, but I see no obvious issues while using it and it still takes beautiful pictures, especially at a party setting or club setting with low light setting where I don't want to carry an SLR and my Samsung or iPhone just provides too grainy of a photo from the high ISOPro:1) love the texture of the camera, it's not a smooth plastic, rather it is a matte feel that is a nice upgrade from the s902) low light performance3) adjust the picture as you see fit on the LCD before snapping4) fits in my blazer without an uncomfortable bulge of an extended lenscons:1) not an slr, of course you won't get that kind of quality or zoom that slr users are used to2) flash has mixed results, I prefer not to use it3) price, you'd think technology has improved to the point where this camera should be below US$200, but I bought it because I can't live without it after losing my s90

For the price, the capability you get with this thing is astounding. Unless I am shooting action photography, I really don't miss my DSLR enough to haul it around. I've always got this little thing with me, which means that I am always shooting. For $250, it is probably the greatest bang for the buck in photography right now. Skip the S110 and buy this instead. Leave it on auto or don't, but just read the manual to learn how to use it properly, and leave the GPS off to save battery. The quality photos a skilled photographer can make with this little point and shoot is great. Most of us care more about snapshots of our friends and family than we do about grand landscapes. Most of the friends and family shots take place indoors. An F/2 lens on a pocket camera is a great thing to have.Buy the wasabi battery 2 pack, or five of them, or a few extra overprice Canon extra batteries. This thing tends to juice out batteries quite quickly.

It took me a while to decide on this awesome camera, having owned quite a few point and shoots from various companies- I was skeptical to find quality in these things. A friend of mine had the S95 and let me try it out, I fell in love with it right away! Not only are the photos fantastic, the camera is easy to use and shoots great video as well to boot. I also own a GoPro which is okay, but so far the overall package of this camera has proven to be far superior. It take better photos than a GoPro and audio from the videos are way better. Even though it's not waterproof, I've dropped this camera in heavy snow (while on) several times and it's never failed (knock on wood).Canon get's my thumbs up on this product!

I bought this to replace my need for a dslr. I had been contemplating a dslr for a long time, but I didn't want to get sucked into the whole lens craze. Needing one for each and every occasion. I know this was a compromise, but I am very happy with it. I'm not gonna say it's even close to a dslr with a prime, but this is a tool that shines for what it was designed for... being there when you need it. I can say that I can bring this to any event and not be "that guy". People act differently when you shove a lens in their face, but with a p&s, things are natural. It takes pretty good (don't pixel peep) pics in all sorts of light. So guess what? I'm done thinking about cameras for now. Mission accomplished! (Ghost Protocol not "W")

THIS IS THE BEST LITTLE PRINTER THAT COULD! I needed high paper sheet capacity to scan and fax. I needed DESKTOP quick reference buttons from the software of the printer to do 30 page scanning (and NOT one page-at-a-time~!) and picture pdf files quickly. Most importantly it had to be affordable and absolutely something from the tech standpoint that I could set-up within 20 minutes(dummy proof) and be using it as I had an emergency business matter that night that required a quick purchase and set up.GOT IT!With my situation in mind, I immediately went to YAHOO REVIEWS~as I trust the members to review honestly and rely on their consumer opinions~ as well as Consumer Reports. The Canon Pixma MX410 was recommended by all and within 2 hours I had been to Walmart (thank you Walmart for being open 24 hours unlike the other majority of TECH retailers that close at 9pm?-hello people there are business people and students out there that can't wait for Internet shipping or for the store to open at 9am on time sensitive matters!) Walmart was open and to my glee had the Canon Pixma MX410 on sale for less $125 I had the Canon Printer, extra sets of Canon Ink (which by the way is cheaper than most!),high premier paper. Wow! All of it! Multiple page Capacity/faxing/scanning/etc. I was amazed as everything I looked at that "they" tell you you need is like $300-$400!GOT IT!Yes, I was a little anxious when I brought it home thinking that "maybe it's cheap and a piece of crap" but NO..it was GREAT! Works like a charm!GOODBYE HP-HELLO CANON! Nothing against HP lovers but this is so much more user friendly and Small Business workable for a budget!VERY easy set-up and CD to help along. My time frame was before Midnight (EST) that night and my Legal 30 page Document needed to arrive in a scanned pdf file intact, professional looking, and saved for the future...Canon helped me through the tutorial to get it done! Perfect..I was thrilled!IT JUST DOESN'T GET ANY BETTER THAN THAT! But it should because as consumers - that's what we want! We have busy lives, business deadlines, mouths to feed, exercise we can't find time for, and tech stress when our computers, printers, and machines do not work! So..kudos Canon..thanks!If you are a small business owner, a mom who wants quick recipe printouts, a 12 year old who hasn't had his/or her own printer before, a Legal student or Attorney with small office who is on a budget and needs quick printing and multiple page capacity..THIS IS IT! Even if you have never set one up...their instructions and tutoring CD will leave you feeling proud that "Hey, I know how to set up a printer and it works great!"GO CANON!! 5 stars! Thanks for the great price, great capacity printer, and the work your staff put into making it user friendly right out of the box.

To be honest, I am not the best person to review this camera because I don't know it yet. However, the fact that the manufacturer did not bother to include a hard copy of the user's guide will greatly hinder me from getting to know it and to use its capacities well. Granted, Canon does provide the "Solutions Disk" with the pdf file of the manual. But what good does it do me when I am out of the house trying to take a picture? Are they thinking that I will be carrying my PC on my excursions? Or do they think that I can just commit all of the complexities of the S100's various operating modes to memory? Unfortunately, neither of these solutions work for me. I would not have bought the S100 if I knew that "in an effort to be a more green company and better protect our environment, Canon no longer offers the small printed manuals with our PowerShot cameras." After having paid over $300 for a camera, that was the response I got to my inquiry about ordering a printed version of the user's guide from Canon. My hope is that they will reconsider and print one before this hinders their sales.

I choose pocket camera so I can always bring it everywhere with me to take pictures and also videos. I bought this camera because it can record video in 1080p resolution (albeit at 24 fps). But then I discovered when I use it in a quiet room, I hear rattling sounds (woodpecker sounds) every time I move the camera around. After reading forums and experimenting myself, I concluded that this is because of the Auto Focus feature of this camera while in video recording mode. What you hear is really the mechanical things moving inside the camera body. So while this keeps the video stay sharp all the time because of the auto focus, you will hear the unpleasant rattling sound as well.To fix this, especially if you care more on the sound than the sharpness of the video, you might want to disable auto focus while in video. Here's how to do it: - Set to "P" (Programs). You cannot use "AUTO" since the camera won't let you set manual focus. - Aim camera to the desired object. Press shutter half-way to set focus automatically into this object. - Press left button (on the four-way navigator) and select "MF". This will activate Manual Focus while shooting video. Note "MF" text should appear on the LCD. - Press "Video" button (the red circle) to start video recording.Another tips is you may set the RING FUNCTION button to MF (manual focus). So all you need to do is to turn the ring once to enter Manual Focus just *before* you press "Video" button. Hope this helps! I do hope that Canon find a way to eliminate this rattling sound on their next generation camera, or make it so users can have MF as the default for video recording.

I bought this camera because I wanted a true point and shoot that I could slip into a pocket when snow skiing. The camera was easy to use after reading all the directions. As other reviewers have commented - the flash is precisely where one naturally holds the camera so anyone using it almost always blocks it when it tries to pop up. Then you turn camera off and on again. Not a reason not to buy this camera so long as other features meet your needs. I like the range of the lense from wide angle to zoom - might not be enough zoom for everyone. Hard to get more zoom on a camera this size. I'm very pleased with the photos I took both inside and outdoors. Have only seen photos on a computer. I haven't printed any yet. Camera is ready to shoot relatively quickly after turning it on. I didn't have any issues with the battery.

In average lighting conditions this camera excels. However if you are shooting in conditions where there is much contrast between areas in your shot, the camera will tend to blow out the highlights if exposed for darker areas or extremely underexpose areas if the exposure is set for lighter areas; in other words, the dynamic range shown by photographs is really lacking. My photos on top of Haleakala at sunrise hardly begin to show the range of light and shadow that I could see. The exposure can be locked by pressing the shutter button halfway down; if you scan around in an automatic exposure mode the camera will show what the shot will look like and when you find what you like you can hold the shutter button down, compose the shot and shoot it. The shooter has a lot of manual control over the camera which allows for far greater flexibility than a simple point and shoot. Flash: why did Canon even bother? Very low output....The size of this camera makes it extremely easy to carry around and available for use; for most of the shots I took the results are quite good, but some where there is a lot of extreme between light and dark in the scene such as especially sunrise and sunset are a real disappointment.

My family and I have had several Canon point-and-shoot cameras. We've had this one for a couple of weeks and it's clearly the best of the bunch. Here's why:The optical zoom has a nice wide angle which is great for indoor shooting. I can easily get everyone at the table in the picture.Works very well in low light. We rarely need the flash when shooting indoors. The built-in GPS is works fine outdoors. (I wish it would work as well indoors).Nice 'ring' around the lens that can be configured for various things. I like setting it to zoom.Interesting computer vision technology. Can be configured to take a picture when it 'sees' a smile or a wink.Fun 'movie digest' mode where it takes a few seconds of video before each picture is taken. You can pull stills from the high def video and they look great.Very compact. I plan to carrying it when travelling. In summary, it's a great all around camera, well worth the price.

I compare this camera to my Canon 7D SLR. I am amazed that I get pictures that are essentially as good as those that I get with the far more expensive SLR. The S100 has some of the drawbacks of a point and shoot such as a simple exposure system and the fact that you must use the preview window on the back to compose your shot. But....it has the advantages of a good point and shoot in that it is small, lightweight and easy to use. It is also pretty sophisticated and will shoot in RAW with aperture priority (among others). It is very capable for a lightweight camera and I have had none of the problems that I have seen in other reviews.

I had to get used to not having a viewfinder, not gripping the top left corner (where the flash pops up), and the GPS can take awhile to get the position locked, but overall I'm happy with the performance and quality of photos as well as the build of the camera. Having the photos geo-tagged is really convenient, and its fun making slow-motion videos. 1080p HD videos can be memory hungry (a 7min video used 900MB). Videos and flash also use up the battery quickly, so I'd recommend getting at least a 16GB class 10 memory card and a 2nd battery to make sure you get though the day.

I have owned three Canon G-series compacts. I never had a failure, but after 5 years on the G7, it was time to update. G12 had been out for 2 years already, and I wanted something smaller and hopefully with a better sensor. I read the reviews here and got the S100. I'm VERY happy with it. I made some comparison shots and the sensor improvements are substantial. I get less bright burnout, more dark detail, and much less noise in low-light shots. The wide angle is most welcome! Less often do I press my back to a wall to get my shot.Unlike other reviewers, I like the pop-up flash. It gives me a tactile indication that it's on, so I don't forget to turn it off when I don't want it.Battery life -I can get two days of frequent shooting before I switch to my spare, a cheap generic from Amazon. (I don't use the GPS or shoot videos.) Most batteries don't yield their full capacity in the first few cycles. Mine seemed to improve considerably over the course of 4-5 charge cycles. I think that accounts for many of the complaints. Besides, the camera gives a long advance-notice of low battery, with an indicator that is unobtrusive.I love the adjustment ring. I shoot mostly in P, and use it for exposure compensation.I do wish it came with a paper manual, but after reading it, and few months of use, I don't miss it. Being an old Canon user helps. And finally, thanks reviewer Bruce H for "Lens Problem Explained". Anyone who buys a fresh one now will be well past the affected serial number range.

Battery life is not terribly great but that is to be expected especially with the large display screen. A second battery is highly recommended. However, I noticed that Canon did change the battery on this camera, so using batteries from previous models might not be an option (i.e. I personally own the original S90 and the battery from that model is different).

Still, the best camera is the one you actully have with you, and if you're going places where you don't want to lug around a lot of weight, like my recent trip to the Carribean, the S100 is really a fun choice. Because it is smaller and not as intimidating as the 5Dii, the S100 can actually be better for taking candid shots of people. The shutter lag, however, can be bit problematic for capturing that 'definitive moment.' If you're on an extended trip, be sure to take an extra couple of batteries and, to conserve power, turn off the GPS.

It uses too much ink. I don't know exactly when I last bought black ink cartridges, but I'll put my most generous estimates at 6 months ago, and I've printed less than 500 pages. Used a Canon G9 for several years and thought it was time to upgrade to get better low light performance so I went for a micro 4/3 in the Olympus E-PL3. I used that camera for 2 months and could just tell that it wasn't happening for me. I didn't like what I was seeing in ISO's above even 400 or so. Decided to try out this S100 and could tell after a week that this was exactly what I wanted. The more I shoot with this, the more impressed I am. Took it to the Natural History Museum and shot in several rooms with very low lighting and the high ISO shots look fine even at 800. I usually shoot on Auto or P with the RAW + jpeg and that works perfectly. Plus, the fact that this little camera fits into a shirt pocket, can't be beat. It's just like taking out an additional iPhone. I have no complaints.UPDATE: Like some others, I too had that lens error issue. The lens got stuck in the open position. Canon took care of it just fine but it was a pain to search their site for the information regarding the return/repair of the unit. What irks me about this issue is that the same thing happened to my wife's point and shoot Canon of a different model. With that one, it wasn't within the warranty so I looked online for a solution and one site said to just give the lens a "whack" on to something sturdy but cushioned. Figured I had nothing to lose so tried it and it worked. But, I got that camera a full year before this S100 and figured Canon knew about this problem but still let the production lines roll with this issue. I still like my S100 but am going with Sony and Panasonic for my next couple cameras. I've been using Canon gear for the past 30 years+ but a few things with them have irked me and I don't like what I see with them.

As Richard Wanderman noted in his review ("I have not taken a sharp picture yet with this camera"), I was unable to take a photo (even with the camera set on "Auto" for point-and-shoot photos) that was sharply in focus. I took the same "Auto" photos with my old Sony CyberShot DSC-W120 and with the new Canon PowerShot S100, and the comparison of the two sets of photos clearly showed that the Sony consistently produced pictures that were in sharp focus while the new Canon S100 did not. And it didn't matter whether the photos were close-up or long range. There were other things that irritated me about the Canon S100, some of which may have been a matter of becoming used to it but, for instance, on the Sony, it is sufficient to turn the dial to movie mode and depress the shutter to shoot a movie but on the Canon, even when setting the dial to movie mode, one must still press the separate "record button" (and depress the shutter) to shoot a movie. The Canon's handbook (or operating manual) is 236 pages long (on a CD) and it isn't always logically written and compiled, that is, all the information that one might need, e.g., for shooting and downloading a movie, is not presented in one useful place. As others have noted, with the Canon, one must be careful to avoid holding the camera by its top left side, as that is where the flash pops up.Perhaps I had just not learned how to use it correctly but in the Auto mode, the Canon appears to have two choices - flash off or flash on, with the auto function of the camera deciding whether a flash is needed. In situations where the background is bright (and thus the camera decides that a flash is not needed, even if one points the focus at a darker spot in the foreground), the flash doesn't fire. Again, on the Sony, there is an option to use a "fill-in" flash, when one wants the foreground to be well-lit.Not withstanding the fact that the Canon S100 is clearly a very sophisticated camera, I felt that it was $429 poorly spent (largely because of the poor Image Quality) and so felt obliged to return the Canon PowerShot S100 to the shop where I had bought it (Best Buy).

Just one week after I received this camera while on a vacation, it already died of the dreaded 'Lens Error'. I was using this camera normally in an indoor environment, with no sudden temperature change nor any physical shock, and all of a sudden when I tried to power it up again the lens would not extend out and it just showed a message 'Lens Error; Will shut down automatically; Restart camera', then turned itself off. If I pressed the play button then I was able to turn it on in play mode and look at the pictures that I've taken, but if I tried to turn it into camera mode then the same thing would happen. No luck with removing the battery and restarting. I decided to just return it. I may try my luck again and purchase one later because the image quality and features are really great. Hopefully Canon will have this design/manufacturing flaw fixed soon. By the way my daughter's S95 also got a 'Lens Error' a few months back. Fortunately it was still within the warranty period and Canon fixed it.I once tried to use the GPS logger function but it drained the battery in just over half a day, so it is really useless if you are on a tour going to difference places in the day because even if you carry a spare battery you just don't know when the battery was dead unless you constantly check it.I would have had given it 5 stars if not for such a poor reliability. And I still think this camera is worth buying just for the excellent picture quality. But you'd better be prepared for the poor reliability and have a spare camera when you are on a vacation or some other occasions which you don't want to miss.
