As a true amateur, I asked a professional photographer friend to recommend a camera that would take "postcard perfect" shots with little to no effort from me. I got that and more with this little camera. The pictures are amazing!The zoom made it look like I was right there with the wildlife I was shooting from a safe distance. The stabilizer is phenomenal, as I took perfect pictures from the back of a moving horse, and fit easily in my pocket.It has a boatload of features I will probably never use, but for me this camera has not disappointed and is well worth the investment.

While the S100 might look like the typical compact camera its performance is more like a medium format camera. Plus besides the usual idiot modes it has lots of user controls for every situation. I also have a digital SLR and I get as good or sometimes better pictures with the S100. It takes a little bit of playing with it to learn all the things it can do and learn how to use all the features. It is hard to take a bad picture with it and by using the user controls every picture is great. The only bad thing I can say about it is the battery life is a little short so make sure you buy an extra battery.

I needed a small camera for candid pictures of vacation travel and social events. I also need a smaller camera to use as a back-up for underwater pictures. After reading the reviews from Backscatter I know the Canon S100 was the camera that would be the best choose for my needs.

I bought this camera on the recommendation from a guy on NPR. I've had Canons before and didn't like them but did it anyway! I only had it for 8 months and just found out today that the lens will not protract, or go into it's body, then an automatic shutdown message comes on. This led me to google the problem and came to find out that ALOT of people have this problem with this camera. Shame on me for buying Canon again! ****Now it is 3 weeks later and I sent Canon the camera to be repaired after 4 emails and they sent me an invoice for 170.00!! CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT THEY SAID THE LCD WAS BROKEN. IT WAS NOT! I'VE NEVER BEEN CALLED A LIAR BY A COMPANY BEFORE. HAS THIS HAPPENED TO ANYONE ELSE?

Got this to carry on my motorcycle. Picked up a durable case locally, because I couldn't find the one I wanted online without shipping making the deal worse than brick and mortar.I was a little worried that this might obsolete my DSLR, but no such problem. I quickly found myself trying to get shots that are no-brainers on the DSLR, but this camera simply won't do, like detail close-ups with good depth of field in the work shop.But for typical point-and-shoot stuff, it's great. Colors are super-vivid, focus and IS are good. Video works well as much as I've used it. It's gone on several camping trips, and is just a lot more convenient to carry around outdoors, which was the point.Definitely get at least one backup battery.

The lens may start out with a wide aperture, but it gets narrow pretty fast as you start to zoom, so make sure that's not going to drive you nuts; if it will you may want to check out a slightly more expensive model like the Olympus XZ-1 or Fujifilm FinePix X10. It's also not terribly fast--probably fine for street shooting, but it'll never keep up with unpredictable kids or animals.

I love the case! It is better than I expected. The quality of case, and especially the strap is good. I was impressed by the heavy duty snaps. All-in-all the case makes the camera look like a professional piece of equipment. I had it at the office (without the cover) and a co-worker took one look at the camera and thought it was a high end one. To sum up? It is stylish, built with quality, and functional.

I've found several serious shortcomings in the S100 I received two weeks ago, not least of which is a ridiculously short battery life (8 - 12 hours with moderate usage). I'd planned to use the camera on multi-day wilderness trips, but this would require toting along several extra batteries (at $30 - $60 each!) Also, the image quality is not what I would have expected from a $429 camera. On my unit, colors often seem dull, and the focus is uneven with distinct blurring occurring consistently in the lower right corner of images (this is particularly visible in flat, highly detailed photos shot from a parallel plane, such as lawn from about five feet overhead). And even at low ISO settings, resolution seemed no better than my three-year-old Sony DSC-W80 pocket camera. (I did check the lens for smudges or fogging, found none, but meticulously cleaned it anyway. No improvement. Also tried a variety of settings and lighting conditions.) The S100 does have some impressive qualities: HD video is very good, GPS works well (though I wish there were an option to choose between UTM and Lat-Lon coordinates in the display . . . and on-board mapping software would be VERY nice!), and the camera boots up really fast. It is also loaded with potentially great features (I particularly liked the function-selectable lens ring). I think Canon got a lot of things right with this camera, but an apparent rush to market means some things got missed. I've returned my S100, but look forward to the next generation in this line.Pros: HD Video, Quick boot-up, Small size, FeaturesCons: Short battery life(!), Poorer-than-expected image quality, Uneven focus, Cost

This camera has all the useful features I need. (I don't need, for example, a wi-fi interface which is available on a newer far more expensive model.) It takes great pictures and is easier to use than earlier Canon point-and-shoot models.

I purchased this over and above the S110, as it has the GPS feature, which the S110 does not. A wider zoom would have been preferred, but typically wide zooms are at the sacrifice of image quality. A great pocket camera for those interested in the robust feature set akin to a DLSR, including shooting RAW.

I own a Nikon D7000 dslr and several high end Nikon lenses. I love my D7000 but I was looking for a small camera that I could carry everywhere i went. I wanted something that was truly portable - something roughly the size of an iphone that would fit in my pocket. I heard good things about the S95 so when I heard that a new version of this camera had been released I decided to go for it. I have not been disappointed. The image quality is excellent. It is of course not up to the same standard as my Nikon D7000 but I have been pleasantly surprised at just how capable the S100 is. For the money and the tiny size it is a very good performer.Of course no camera is perfect and the S100 is no exception. The battery is very poor. I knew it wouldn't be up to the amazing standard of my D7000 but I expected more. If you are going to be doing any serious shooting you will need to invest in a second battery. My other minor quibble is with the auto ISO function. For some reason, you can't use auto ISO in manual. Not a deal breaker but I would have liked to have had this capability.This camera has a lot of advanced features and it really isn't intended for the casual user who shoots on 'auto' mode. If you are not interested in exploring the advanced settings, you should save your money and get a more basic Canon. This is a camera for someone who wants to control their photography.Overall, this is a great camera for a dslr user who wants an 'everyday' take everywhere camera with advanced features. Highly recommended!

After hearing so much about S95, we wanted to look for the latest version of the S product line, and viola S100 and S110 were on our list. After taking some pictures, the camera exceeded our expectations by a mile! Those cameras are highly recommended!

Unfortunately, I have to add another customer unhappy experience with the Lens Stuck Open problem. I was in the middle of a vacation when the lens opened and would not retract. I was without a camera for the rest of the vacation . When I returned home I found out that this is a "common" problem with this camera. If I had read the number of reviews here reporting the problem before I purchased, I would definitely not have purchased the camera. I would definitely recommend NOT to purchase this camera.I bought the camera on January 25, 2012 from Amazon. It worked until May 25, 2012. Four months is not a long time before a camera ceases to function. I have sent it in for repair, a process that requires me to pay for shipping to the repair center and waiting to receive the camera back (estimated 7 - 10 days). From some of the reviews here the repair will work for a while until it needs to be sent in again. I hope mine will work.My next camera will not be a Canon.

This camera is the nicest compact I've used. My favorite features are the wide angle lens, 1-touch video, low light detail, and the in-camera HDR. I haven't gotten the GPS feature working, I'm not sure how to retrieve that data. Good upgrade from SX100.

I have two Nikon DSLRs and good glass, so when I need the horsepower I assemble the appropriate combinations. I never expected this camera to rival what those do. What I did wanted was a replacement for my carry around camera (a Canon A620) with upgraded capabilities and a smaller housing (camera phones are improving, but nowhere near what I need as far as full manual controls). I was a bit skeptical about the quality of the images and do notice a different kind of image degrading when I blow up some images than I get with the Nikons, but for the type of shots I will use it for, a non-issue. Yes, the battery runs down faster than others, so I have two. I like the function ring, am now used to the menu locations and can quickly adjust the flash, exposure and ISO for tricky lighting. I am glad they finally got caught up with production. I was undecided about this back in October, had one in my hand and put it down. When I changed my mind and wanted one, I had to wait more than 6 weeks. I need to spend more time with the RAW files; they require a different work flow than my Nikon RAW files, but I don't consider this a draw back. The video capabilities are adequate, but I'm using a different HD video camera when something scheduled turns up. I'd recommend this to anyone that wants a small quality carry around camera with video (hoping the production quality of your copy is good).

It has a fine optics and electronic elements to take amazing pictures with no need of flash in low light conditions.Easy to use in automatic mode and even with additional features for those who like to play with a fine gadget.

The Canon Powershot S100 digital camera is a great "go anywhere" camera. It has a fast lens, great low-light performance, and both automatic & full manual controls. The pictures it takes are great, and fits easily in my pocket. I am glad I bought it!

I bought the PowerShot S100 in Dec 2011. It is simple to use and I really liked the fact that I could put this in manual mode and really control the settings. However not having a view finder makes it really hard to do anything creative and so if I were to do it again, I'd opt for a POS with a view finder. Also, I've not had the camera for more than 9 months with limited use and it has never been dropped or misused and yet the zoom no longer works. When I try to zoom, the camera shuts off and says there is an error in the lens. Luckily it's still under warranty and so I hope the experience to get this repaired is a good one.

I have found this camera easy to use, including changing various settings. Although I have only had the camera a short time, I've been impressed with the "auto" results it has delivered in aa variety of different shooting environments, e.g., low light.

I bought this camera just prior to going to Paris. It did fabulous. The pictures came out clear and beautiful. Many of the museums require NO FLASH. This camera took great pictures in those situations. I couldn't be more pleased with how easy it was to use and the quality of the pictures and videos. I would recommend it to any one.

So far it's everything I expected. Right out of the box it was a very simple straight forward point and shoot. Takes great low light pictures without the flash so pictures look more natural. Yet to test the GPS feature yet. Overall: very satisfied.

Poor camera! Picture is deceiving! It makes it look like you just slide the camera in the case. Not so! It is made of a long flimsy piece that you wrap around the camera. And to close the camera is another flimsy flap that does not snap. The case is too small for both the Powershot S95 and S100. Do not buy! The camera will fall out!

This is one amazing compact camera where it fits into your pocket easily. The ability to use aperture from f/2.0 to f/8.0 as well as images shot up to ISO 1600 are generally clean makes it even more useful especially under low light or indoors.

So very happy with this camera. I bought it for concerts and the need for a camera for low lighting. Its perfect. If you go to events like concerts this is the camera. It takes top quality photos for all occasions. I would definitely recommend!

Great little camera... until the "Lens Error" problem and then you are without a camera. Big let-down from Canon. Was just starting on a trip in Nepal when the camera failed and then that's it. As a frequent traveller it's not possible to send back to Canon for repair. So, money down the drain.Product should have been recalled.

My best pocket camara to date, grate pictures, great angle (24 mm), perfecto for night shot and videos. Even better than the new S110. Very nice feel and grip. I only wish a longer battery life.

The photos are very clear and with nearly no noise, as good as Nikon D90, except some other functions like focusing, lens. The video recording is also very clear. I can use it as a digital video recorder

After reading many reviews of pocket size digital camera, 3 cameras were short listed: Canon IXUS 240 HS, Canon Powershot S100 and Sony RX100. I have bought the s100 because of it is thinner than the RX100 and easier to grip. The s100 has very good design and layout of buttons, dials and on screen manuals. It gives many control options for more serious users. The boot up sound of the s100 reminds me my first digital camera, Canon A75, which brought me so much good memories and good photos. However, the battery life of the s100 is poor. It can run flat after 1.5 hour of heavy use without activating the GPS. The pop up flash at the left corner is a bit annoying. I would wish it can be pressed down and pop up by a finger.

Was a bit apprehensive after reading some of the reviews about lens errors even though the serial number isn't from 21xxxx to 41xxxx. My serial number was 47xxxx. Only time will tell if the lens error will pop up sometime in the future, in the meantime, I'm enjoying this camera.

This is the best pocket camera in the world. You may not need a big DSLR after getting one of these. Shoots great in low light without flash, just crank up the iso and its ready. Images are sharp and renders colors extremely well.

I would recommend this camera as a wedding or birthday gift. Small and compact, yet does it all! Fall back- not enough memory though, need to buy the memory stick/disk apart.

Bought this for my mom during Gold Box deal. Haven't had any issues so far although we've only used it for a few days. I have an S95 also and the pics are pretty equivalent. Easier to hold than the S95.

Purchased and returned a CanonS100 to Amazon,because the aperture narrows very quick, and indoor video becomes very dark. My LX5 camera shows great video in low light when zoomed out. After reading the reviews at Amazon I purchased a Canon Elph 300HS. I tested this camera and found the quality of pictures to equal the S100 and the video indoors to be somewhat better. I love the Elph's smaller size and the build quality. The less expensive 300HS has many of the same features as the more expensive S100. Both cameras have 24mm wide angle len's, CMOS sensor, and 5X optical zoom. Manuel controls are not needed as the Elph 300HS shoots great pictures and good video with the press of one button.[[ASIN:B005MTME3U Canon PowerShot S100 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 5x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom (BlackUpdate; Recieved a 2nd S100 from amazon and conducted side by side tests with my 300HS and was surprised that the sharpness, clarity and color of the pictures was very nice with the S100 and only so so with the 300HS. I plan to return the 300HS and keep the Great S100. My previous concern of aperture narrowing in low light rooms was resolved by turning the lights on. I love the S100 camera and highly recommend it. Quality of pictures is my main critera for a small camera and the S100 ptoduces beautiful, photo's and I am very pleased. I love this S100 camera.

I bought it for my 70-year old parents. They love it.I haven't tried it a lot. Based on my limited use, most functions are the same as my PowerShot S95. One big improvement over the S95 is the exterior is or feels metal.

The camera feels great in my hand. Not a plastic case, but solid. The pop up flash takes a little getting used to, I kept putting my finger over the pop up. Takes great pictures and has easy to use settings.

This is the second canon powershot that has failed to last more than 6 months. Many people have written about the lens error problem and I guess it's the same defect in my case. Just absolute pos.
