In average lighting conditions this camera excels. However if you are shooting in conditions where there is much contrast between areas in your shot, the camera will tend to blow out the highlights if exposed for darker areas or extremely underexpose areas if the exposure is set for lighter areas; in other words, the dynamic range shown by photographs is really lacking. My photos on top of Haleakala at sunrise hardly begin to show the range of light and shadow that I could see. The exposure can be locked by pressing the shutter button halfway down; if you scan around in an automatic exposure mode the camera will show what the shot will look like and when you find what you like you can hold the shutter button down, compose the shot and shoot it. The shooter has a lot of manual control over the camera which allows for far greater flexibility than a simple point and shoot. Flash: why did Canon even bother? Very low output....The size of this camera makes it extremely easy to carry around and available for use; for most of the shots I took the results are quite good, but some where there is a lot of extreme between light and dark in the scene such as especially sunrise and sunset are a real disappointment.

My family and I have had several Canon point-and-shoot cameras. We've had this one for a couple of weeks and it's clearly the best of the bunch. Here's why:The optical zoom has a nice wide angle which is great for indoor shooting. I can easily get everyone at the table in the picture.Works very well in low light. We rarely need the flash when shooting indoors. The built-in GPS is works fine outdoors. (I wish it would work as well indoors).Nice 'ring' around the lens that can be configured for various things. I like setting it to zoom.Interesting computer vision technology. Can be configured to take a picture when it 'sees' a smile or a wink.Fun 'movie digest' mode where it takes a few seconds of video before each picture is taken. You can pull stills from the high def video and they look great.Very compact. I plan to carrying it when travelling. In summary, it's a great all around camera, well worth the price.

I compare this camera to my Canon 7D SLR. I am amazed that I get pictures that are essentially as good as those that I get with the far more expensive SLR. The S100 has some of the drawbacks of a point and shoot such as a simple exposure system and the fact that you must use the preview window on the back to compose your shot. But....it has the advantages of a good point and shoot in that it is small, lightweight and easy to use. It is also pretty sophisticated and will shoot in RAW with aperture priority (among others). It is very capable for a lightweight camera and I have had none of the problems that I have seen in other reviews.

I had to get used to not having a viewfinder, not gripping the top left corner (where the flash pops up), and the GPS can take awhile to get the position locked, but overall I'm happy with the performance and quality of photos as well as the build of the camera. Having the photos geo-tagged is really convenient, and its fun making slow-motion videos. 1080p HD videos can be memory hungry (a 7min video used 900MB). Videos and flash also use up the battery quickly, so I'd recommend getting at least a 16GB class 10 memory card and a 2nd battery to make sure you get though the day.

I have owned three Canon G-series compacts. I never had a failure, but after 5 years on the G7, it was time to update. G12 had been out for 2 years already, and I wanted something smaller and hopefully with a better sensor. I read the reviews here and got the S100. I'm VERY happy with it. I made some comparison shots and the sensor improvements are substantial. I get less bright burnout, more dark detail, and much less noise in low-light shots. The wide angle is most welcome! Less often do I press my back to a wall to get my shot.Unlike other reviewers, I like the pop-up flash. It gives me a tactile indication that it's on, so I don't forget to turn it off when I don't want it.Battery life -I can get two days of frequent shooting before I switch to my spare, a cheap generic from Amazon. (I don't use the GPS or shoot videos.) Most batteries don't yield their full capacity in the first few cycles. Mine seemed to improve considerably over the course of 4-5 charge cycles. I think that accounts for many of the complaints. Besides, the camera gives a long advance-notice of low battery, with an indicator that is unobtrusive.I love the adjustment ring. I shoot mostly in P, and use it for exposure compensation.I do wish it came with a paper manual, but after reading it, and few months of use, I don't miss it. Being an old Canon user helps. And finally, thanks reviewer Bruce H for "Lens Problem Explained". Anyone who buys a fresh one now will be well past the affected serial number range.

I purchased this camera to use for the birth of our first baby. I was very worried about the shutter issues noted in so many reviews, but I checked into it, and was told the issue had been addressed. The camera came so holy recommended by five professionals I spoke to, I decided to buy the camera. That being said... This is a great camera. It has plenty of options for me to tinker with, but easy enough for my technophobic wife to just point and shoot. Great pictures, fast response. easy video as well - my favorite camera I haver ever owned. The only reason it does not get five stars - the battery life. Buy the extra battery and keep it charged. It claims 300 pictures for the battery. I think it is more like half that. I concede that it is largely connected to the amount of time the screen is on, but the battery life is disappointing.

Purchased this as a gift to replace an older non-S canon camera. Not quite as slim as the older Canon that it replaced but still slim enough to be pocketable. Picture quality is far superior and achieves the low light quality that the gift receiver was looking for. Battery life is not terribly great but that is to be expected especially with the large display screen. A second battery is highly recommended. However, I noticed that Canon did change the battery on this camera, so using batteries from previous models might not be an option (i.e. I personally own the original S90 and the battery from that model is different).

I have a Nikon DSLR and this is a great complimentary camera to it. It is very small and easily pocketable. The manual controls are fantastic. The adjustment ring around the lens is a great idea. It has an adjustable flash, 3 different increments.Anyone who is worried about the battery life you need not to worry. There are several things you can do to add life to the battery. The camera comes set to continuous IS and Focus. Great for video but completely not needed for photos. Set these to only active while picture taking. Also, there is a setting for the GPS to log you while you are not taking photos. I think it logs every 3 minutes. Make sure that is off. This well extend the battery life by a lot.Pictures come out fantastic. Besides manual there are several modes. HDR in camera. Also there is a hand held night photo so you don't need a flash to take decent low light photos wihtout a flash.Highly recomended for anyone who wants a small, pocket size camera

Overall I'm mostly happy - it works with only minor usability niggles, ISO6400 is usable, and optical quality is quite good. Battery life is weak, as expected.Bear in mind that, as a video camera, it's not great - it'll randomly stop recording after around 22 min, and at best recording times are limited to less than 30min. Unlike my FT1, you can't set this camera up to record an event without a minder - it's ok for clips, but that's it. Battery life for taking video is around 82 minutes. (Also, video ISO is limited to 1600.)

In purely technical terms, this camera has about 25% - 35% of the capability of my Canon 5Dii. Still, the best camera is the one you actully have with you, and if you're going places where you don't want to lug around a lot of weight, like my recent trip to the Carribean, the S100 is really a fun choice. Because it is smaller and not as intimidating as the 5Dii, the S100 can actually be better for taking candid shots of people. The shutter lag, however, can be bit problematic for capturing that 'definitive moment.' If you're on an extended trip, be sure to take an extra couple of batteries and, to conserve power, turn off the GPS.

Overall I like this printer. It has a lot of fancy programs and preferences that I haven't needed to use yet, but that seem useful. And the scanner head is good for deal with large, clunky textbooks. The quality of the printing is also good and doesn't smudge. My only two issues are 1.) manual duplex, so you have to manually flip the paper to print on both sides which is a bit of a pain, and 2.) It uses too much ink. I don't know exactly when I last bought black ink cartridges, but I'll put my most generous estimates at 6 months ago, and I've printed less than 500 pages. I've tried using remanufactured EcoInk cartridges to save money, but the printer doesn't recognize them.

Used a Canon G9 for several years and thought it was time to upgrade to get better low light performance so I went for a micro 4/3 in the Olympus E-PL3. I used that camera for 2 months and could just tell that it wasn't happening for me. I didn't like what I was seeing in ISO's above even 400 or so. Decided to try out this S100 and could tell after a week that this was exactly what I wanted. The more I shoot with this, the more impressed I am. Took it to the Natural History Museum and shot in several rooms with very low lighting and the high ISO shots look fine even at 800. I usually shoot on Auto or P with the RAW + jpeg and that works perfectly. Plus, the fact that this little camera fits into a shirt pocket, can't be beat. It's just like taking out an additional iPhone. I have no complaints.UPDATE: Like some others, I too had that lens error issue. The lens got stuck in the open position. Canon took care of it just fine but it was a pain to search their site for the information regarding the return/repair of the unit. What irks me about this issue is that the same thing happened to my wife's point and shoot Canon of a different model. With that one, it wasn't within the warranty so I looked online for a solution and one site said to just give the lens a "whack" on to something sturdy but cushioned. Figured I had nothing to lose so tried it and it worked. But, I got that camera a full year before this S100 and figured Canon knew about this problem but still let the production lines roll with this issue. I still like my S100 but am going with Sony and Panasonic for my next couple cameras. I've been using Canon gear for the past 30 years+ but a few things with them have irked me and I don't like what I see with them.

I need a camera that is compact yet delivers. I have the S95 and it is by far the best camera in it's class. It is fast, great pictures, good video and easy to get great pictures. My daughter wanted one so I bought her the S100. I am now jealous. I took it for a day and snapped the hell out of it. What an amazing piece of technology. WOW. It is super fast.. Takes good pictures and handles extremely well. I am always investigating new technology and know there are other options for this level of camera, that said, for the compact nature and the quality build and price this camera is a shoe in for most consumers. I am extremely please with this purchase. I have taken 1000's of pictures with my S95 and there is no sign that it is letting up. These are very sturdy cameras.

Ужасно

As Richard Wanderman noted in his review ("I have not taken a sharp picture yet with this camera"), I was unable to take a photo (even with the camera set on "Auto" for point-and-shoot photos) that was sharply in focus. I took the same "Auto" photos with my old Sony CyberShot DSC-W120 and with the new Canon PowerShot S100, and the comparison of the two sets of photos clearly showed that the Sony consistently produced pictures that were in sharp focus while the new Canon S100 did not. And it didn't matter whether the photos were close-up or long range. There were other things that irritated me about the Canon S100, some of which may have been a matter of becoming used to it but, for instance, on the Sony, it is sufficient to turn the dial to movie mode and depress the shutter to shoot a movie but on the Canon, even when setting the dial to movie mode, one must still press the separate "record button" (and depress the shutter) to shoot a movie. The Canon's handbook (or operating manual) is 236 pages long (on a CD) and it isn't always logically written and compiled, that is, all the information that one might need, e.g., for shooting and downloading a movie, is not presented in one useful place. As others have noted, with the Canon, one must be careful to avoid holding the camera by its top left side, as that is where the flash pops up.Perhaps I had just not learned how to use it correctly but in the Auto mode, the Canon appears to have two choices - flash off or flash on, with the auto function of the camera deciding whether a flash is needed. In situations where the background is bright (and thus the camera decides that a flash is not needed, even if one points the focus at a darker spot in the foreground), the flash doesn't fire. Again, on the Sony, there is an option to use a "fill-in" flash, when one wants the foreground to be well-lit.Not withstanding the fact that the Canon S100 is clearly a very sophisticated camera, I felt that it was $429 poorly spent (largely because of the poor Image Quality) and so felt obliged to return the Canon PowerShot S100 to the shop where I had bought it (Best Buy).

Just one week after I received this camera while on a vacation, it already died of the dreaded 'Lens Error'. I was using this camera normally in an indoor environment, with no sudden temperature change nor any physical shock, and all of a sudden when I tried to power it up again the lens would not extend out and it just showed a message 'Lens Error; Will shut down automatically; Restart camera', then turned itself off. If I pressed the play button then I was able to turn it on in play mode and look at the pictures that I've taken, but if I tried to turn it into camera mode then the same thing would happen. No luck with removing the battery and restarting. I decided to just return it. I may try my luck again and purchase one later because the image quality and features are really great. Hopefully Canon will have this design/manufacturing flaw fixed soon. By the way my daughter's S95 also got a 'Lens Error' a few months back. Fortunately it was still within the warranty period and Canon fixed it.I once tried to use the GPS logger function but it drained the battery in just over half a day, so it is really useless if you are on a tour going to difference places in the day because even if you carry a spare battery you just don't know when the battery was dead unless you constantly check it.I would have had given it 5 stars if not for such a poor reliability. And I still think this camera is worth buying just for the excellent picture quality. But you'd better be prepared for the poor reliability and have a spare camera when you are on a vacation or some other occasions which you don't want to miss.

I've had this camera now for 6 months and I have to give it 5 stars for the following:1. Picture quality at 12mp RAW is very good2. Full HD videos3. User controls like one button video recording makes it so convenient and easy to use. A step up from the S95.Where I deduct the stars to make it only a 2 rating:1. Battery consumption is worse than the S95. Even if I turn off the GPS function. You need to bring a spare battery with you. With all the bells and whistles that went into this camera, you'd think Canon would put a higher capacity battery to go with it. Well, maybe to keep it pocket size, they used a smaller form battery. This is where the S95 outperforms the S100.2. Lens error. Seems like this camera has a manufacturing defect. The lens jumps out of its rails and stops working. Many owners have reported this problem. I brought the camera to a service center (here in the Philippines). The shop says that since I got this from Amazon, the warranty doesn't cover it. Duh?! And it's been 4 weeks and still no parts available. Canon should do a recall and honor the warranty wherever in the world I bring it in for servicing.Recommendation. Stay with the S95 or consider another camera. Don't buy this until Canon fixes the lens error problem.

This is an excellent camera. I enjoyed very much this camera. I used for trips, birthday parties, home, street, etc.The way you have to use the function wheel is slighty different from older models. For instance now this camera have an specific button to record movies. It has an amazing function (SCN), that records a movie with all of your prep moments for each photo, and the camera compiles on the fly and you can watch a short movie animating your photos (it is in a lower res but fine)The only con is the built in flash. This a terrible design mistake. If you have your left hand on the flash when it is going to emerge, happens horrible situations. The flash stays in a mid way and doesn't work until you extract manually (!!) and turn off and on again. I used an older model in witch you could even turn off the flash by manually put again inside and turn on taking manually out. Canon need to fix this design error for the future.

I really wanted to like this camera. I love the GPS feature, which is not often found on cameras. I kept hearing about the Sony RX100, but at more than double the price of this camera, I just wasn't sure. Well, after having both in my hands and testing them out, I had to conclude that the Sony took better pictures. Ultimately, that is what matters most. This camera felt sort of cheap after handling the Sony for a while. I will say that the menus are easier to navigate on the Canon, though. The Sony does a much better job in low light conditions as well. However, if you don't have the money to spend, this Canon is a close second.

This camera takes fairly good pictures, almost as good as a entry-level DSLR. I was kind of surprised that there was no way to override the flash (only options are no flash or auto) setting, but it works great all the time.Only cons are battery life, which doesn't seem to last long (I haven't time it, but I don't think it will last more than a couple of hours or 150 shots) and the auto-tracking/auto-scene selection sometimes focus/chooses the wrong subject/scene, so it's probably better to manually select the right scene. The "Blink Detect" is kind of lame because it only displays an icon after you've taken the photo. Since I think most people review the shot right there, you'll obviously notice that somebody blinked, so the feature isn't really telling you something that you didn't know already.

I purchased this camera for a travel camera. One that was small yet powerful and took great pictures. Got a great price for it, and believe once I remember to hold my hands to the side, it will be perfect. I gave it a 4 star because the flash is located in an odd spot. My left finger is always holding the camera on top where the flash is. When the flash pops up my finger is in the way and this gets the flash function all spun out. I think it's because I hold my Canon DSLR the same way. Old habits die hard. I just need to remember when using my S100. Other than that, I'm pleased. Oh, and the battery does need to be charged twice the amount of my other camera.

I have loved my Canon F-1 for many years. I took thousands of slides and black and white photos over the years. My first Canon digital camera was the PowerShot 790IS, and I loved it. It finally fell apart, so I had to replace it.I got a new PowerShot ELPH 100HS last summer and loved everything about it EXCEPT the quality of the photos. They were not as sharp as the 790IS. I returned it to Amazon and got the ELPH 50OHS. The quality of the photos were better, but still not as sharp as I wanted them to be.This week I purchased the Canon PowerShot S100, and I LOVE it.Crystal clear photos, which is what I need. Getting used to the functions, but I am a quick learner. The only thing that I like about the 500HS better than the S100 is the high speed burst function. The 500HS will take as many photos as you hold down the shutter. The S100 will only take up to 8 photos at a time. That is not really a deal breaker considering the quality of the photos that I am getting with the S100.I have taken at least 5000 photos with the 500HS, and I could live with quality of the photos if there were no other options. The quality of the photos will always be the bigger factor. I am sure that a small camera like a Leica could take better photos, but that is out of my budget.I don't want to carry a camera as big a DSLR anymore. I carried my Canon F-1 every day for about 15 years, and I just got tired of carrying the camera, film, batteries, lenses, flash, etc.The Canon PowerShot S100 does almost everything that I want it to. I can live with the limitations that I could get from a DSLR.This Canon PowerShot S100 is a keeper for me. Hopefully I won't get the dreaded "lens error" that I have read about from other posts.

Some of the reviews I've read make it sound like you can just put this camera in auto mode and take perfect pictures every time. After using mine for two days I can tell you that it ain't so. It is capable of taking some lovely pictures, with pleasing flesh tones and perfectly balanced lighting. But it can take some stinkers too--out of focus, yellow and overexposed (with flash and incandescent lighting). At times in an indoor setting the screen blurred annoyingly and there was a shutter delay of about 3-4 seconds, by which time the moment had passed. I love the special effects, like fisheye lens and color accent. A good camera for some but not all situations, although if you're a very knowledgable photographer and have taken the time to get familiar with all the settings then you'll probably have better results. Is it worth the money? Maybe, but not for me.I also have to agree with the complaints about battery life. After taking about 80 photos, most with flash, and 5 short videos of 5-30 seconds my battery was pretty much depleted. (Canon says camera should take about 200 photos per charge.) Video quality is generally ok, but I'll definitely stick with my Sony camcorder when I want HD video.Update: After playing with a Canon SX230HS I decided to keep the S100. It has a very solid, comfortable feel--compared to the SX230HS--and I'm getting more comfortable with the various menus and settings. For example, I can now quickly alter the white balance (which you would expect auto white balance mode to do, but it doesn't) and I've learned to use Program mode or Aperature priority mode in most situations. I've already mentioned that I love the in-camera special effects, and the slow-mo video too. Finally, compared to cameras I've had in the past there is remarkably little noise at high ISO settings. Still, for the person who just wants a quick-and-easy point and shoot that takes great photos I think the Nikon Coolpix S8200 is a better choice.

I have both the S95 and the S100. I see a lot of disappointed reviews in the S100 but I think it's more to do with the fact that there really isn't much of an upgrade from the S95 than lack of quality in the s100. I have taken literally thousands of pictures with each camera, and they are both great. I think the S95 takes certain pictures a bit better than the S100, but also the S100 takes certain pictures better than the S95.The S100 also has the separate video record button which is a nice feature, as well as the GPS feature. The S100 has a slightly better zoom which is also nice.I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 b/c i really was expecting it to be noticeably better than the S95 and it wasn't. But its still a great camera and takes amazing pictures.edit: I should add that i always use the camera in "P-mode". Do not use on Auto mode, it's complete garbage. I have no idea why Canon has this on the camera, it was horrible on the S95 and it's horrible on the S100, and it leads to most of the negative reviews on here when people don't know they shouldn't use it.Also, I almost always take pictures (of people) with the flash on. The only time i don't is when they are facing into bright direct sunlight, or if for whatever reason the flash blows them out. I would say for 90% of my people-pictures though I use the flash, even in daylight. It just makes for a better picture, i couldn't explain why but go ahead and try it, you'll be surprised of the results. If the flash is too bright, sometimes i'll back up a bit, zoom in, and try the same shot again. B/c you are backed up a couple of feet the flash will be less powerful.I typically won't use a flash when shooting scenes without people in it.

I wanted to step up from a very satisfactory experience with Canon's Powershot S3. Several excellent reviews, including David Pogue's led me in this direction rather than a SLR. The result is an amazingly compact and light camera with a very good lens. It has most of the functions available on very expensive cameras. Shooting RAW postpones a lot of the decision making for post-processing. I highly recommend it for anyone not needing the lens performance and flexibility (and inconvenience) of an SLR.My unit was early production (2011), and on a recent cruise broke down with the lens failing to retract. Canon was very responsive about fixing it; it is in for repairs and I miss having it at hand.
