I started with the "Yamaha YAS-101BL Front Surround System" (sound bar) to improve the quality of the sound coming out of our HD flat screen TV. That first step definitely improved the overall sound clarity and continuity; but the lower range was still inadequate. On the other hand I did not want a subwoofer that distorts the overall spectrum with too much unnatural punch; I wanted to be able to control the bass output to suit the program being viewed. I chose to go with the matching Yamaha YST-FSW050BL2 Subwoofer; it cable connects to the sound bar and one remote controls both. I must say it was the right choice. This subwoofer is controllable and powerful enough to fill our large family, kitchen and dining area with all the base we want

Very happy with this product - it integrates well with my Yamaha Soundbar (YSP 1000) and as long as you don't crank it up too much it's fine.

I have put together the Yamaha speaker system of my choice, this works well with my other units. Reasonably priced and works well with all of it. The Cat does not care for it at all, guess she will have to get use to it. Very happy with it, features are basic with no surprises. Hooked to a Onkyo reciever. 5 star for me.

It's amazing how much bass comes out of this small unit that even fits under a side table. The clarity of sound from the YS-101 combination is just as satisfying as having a full home theatre without the clutter.
Those having trouble setting up this unit, chances are you didn't configure your sound bar to have the bass output to your subwoofer. To do this, put your sound bar on standby mode. Then press the volume - button & power button simultaneously.
Also make sure that you connect all the supplied cable from the sub to your sound bar and that's it. Enjoy!

I bought this as a Subwoofer unit for a new Yamaha Soundbar. I connected both the System Link Cable and a Mediabridge Subwoofer cable to both the Yamaha Soundbar and the Yamaha Subwoofer. While the Soundbar continued to work perfectly, there was no comunication between the Soundbar and the Subwoofer from the systems link cable or the Subwoofer cable. I tried reconnecting all cables, and then tried different cables, an no sound what so ever from the Subwoofer. its a bit tricky turning off the subwoofer on the soundbar, which is necessary to enable the external subwoofer. In the end I contacted Yamaha support, the first CSR was just plain rude, I called back later and spoke with another CSR that was very helpful and resolved the issue

I didn't want an "ugly box" on the floor as with a previous system. This sub actually fits on the TV stand lowest shelf.
I love the size. Very tunable and attenuation controls very effective. Highly recommend Dependable Resources, too. Honestly, you will be surprised by the range, output & accuracy of this concise unit. I do not agree that it is boomy at all; it is so easy to balance this sub and quite ample for most situations.
It would be nice if it turned on and off automatically.

dont overload it, dont over push it. and set the graphics and this sub will perform well with all smaller hifis. mine is added to the denon dmb micro system. good sound alround.

My wife would love it if she never sees any speakers in the house. I, on the other hand, am a recovering audiophile. So we need to meet somewhere in the middle of huge, shake the floor 5.1 surround sound, and, well, nothing. I ended up buying a small pair of Polk Audio bookshelf speakers, the TSI100 (x2). Though it has decent bass response for a speaker of that size, it is just not possible to get the full spectrum that you get with floor speakers. Enter this subwoofer. It is unique because it is not a big ugly box that stands somewhere in the room, which my wife would never stand for. We have a beautiful armoir to hide audio/video equipment, and this unit slides right underneath, against the wall. This is a powerful sub when the placement is right (read other reviews!), you should play with placement if you're not getting sound. I only have it turned less than half way up, and it fills out the sound SO nicely. If you want a discreet subwoofer, this is the one.

More of a base module. It can fill a need (base extension with really small speakers and no space for a sub), but it is a very specific need, such as fitting under a couch. 35 Hz isn't sub-woofer low (I would expect a sub to perform in the 20 - 80 Hz range, perhaps use it up to 120 Hz with tiny speakers). If you need the specific ability of this unit, not bad for the price, but don't expect subwoofer performance from a base unit.

Fantastic, sub especially for the price. I bought it due to its shape, quite often powered subs are a big cube and difficult to fit anywhere in your room. This is a similar width to a sky box and twice as deep, it fits snugly under my sideboard and produces a really nice deep sound. I've connected mine to an onkyo amp, I'd say the only downside to this sub is that it doesn't have an auto power on feature, you have to get up and manually switch it on, however you may not always want / need the subwoofer on so its swings and roundabouts really.
Definitely gets my vote, feels pretty well made, and looks great.

Got a replacement subwoofer while the one I had went out of order. The previous one was 200W in power and overall produced a good sound. Could not really afford anything in a similar range at the moment so decided to get something a bit cheaper to get by until I sort something out in regards of the old one.
While you may be getting what you are paying for and in fact might even like it if you haven't heard anything better, yet the best description of its sound would be "wet cardboard". It really struggles to go below 60Hz and I am not even sure it is even 100W in power as per the product description, seems that according to its manual it is 75W.
Would not recommend unless you are on a tight budget or just need to get by for a few weeks like myself.
Edit: the quality of the bass on this sub is better for some of the sources. For computer games it seems to be just fine, haven't tested it a lot with movies but it seems to be acceptable, however if you are going to use it for music mainly, that may not make the cut for you.

I initially purchased a YAS-101 Soundbar for my new LED TV, after finding that the built-in speakers on my new TV were a little underwhelming. The soundbar was brilliant - good bass (both low and mid range) great treble and outstanding audio clarity too. After a few days I decided to take it one step further and purchase this subwoofer.
The beauty of this subwoofer is that it works hand in hand with the YAS-101 soundbar. Switch on the soundbar and the subwoofer comes on. Switch off the soundbar and the subwoofer turns off. Added to this was the fact that this was the only kit that I could find that worked with the TV's original remote control, as it effectively reads the on/off and volume down and volume up signal transmitted from your TV remote to control the soundbar/subwoofer - nice!
In terms of performance, the output of bass from this unit is just amazing! It has enough poke to fill a medium to large size room with rich bass, without sounding boomy or rattly at all. The unit is made from a mixture of wood and sturdy plastic so it is virtually rattle free and well made/designed! Some subwoofers that I have tried have been punchy enough to deliver low range signals but absolutely pathetic at producing mid range bass. This is the best of both worlds - which I truely appreciate!
Really pleased with my setup and could not ask for any better! 5 stars, without a shadow of a doubt :)

I really like the sound and controls on the front of the device. We relocated to a new home that is wired for speakers. My older Bose system had tower speakers, so I was given a yahama receiver as a gift but no sub. I purchased this sub and for the money it rivals the bose

i BOUGHT THIS TO GO WITH MY SONY STRDH 720 RECEIVER BECAUSE MY SUBWOOFER COULD NOT WORK WITH THIS PRODUCT. THERE WAS NO MENTION IN THE INSTRUCTIONS THAT A POWERED SUBWOOFER WAS NEEDED FOR THIS ITEM. I PURCHASED THIS SUBWOOFER AND SET IT UP AFTER READING THE INSTRUCTIONS. WHAT A DIFFERENCE IT MAKES. SET IT UP ONLY YESTERDAY AND THE SOUND IS CLEAR AND WHAT I LIKE IS THAT YOU CAN ADJUST THE BOOM COMING FROM IT.IT COMPLIMENTS THE RECEIVER VERY WELL. IT IS ALSO ATTRACTIVE AND BLENDS IN WELL. GOOD PRODUCT BY YAMAHA.

I bought this to add to my RX-A720 Yamaha receiver. The sync power feature is great as I don't have to keep the sub woofer on all the time or climb behind the furniture to turn it on and off.

Its cheap enough! Hasn't quite got the ultimate grunt of larger SWs but its worth the money and upsets the neighbours less than my bigger one that I use on my main system

I needed a subwoofer to fit in a small space and this was one of the very few available. The sound quality is nothing to write about. At this price, you can get much better sounding subwoofers if size and form factor are not your priority. I have it paired with an Onkyo receiver in a 15 x 15 room so I normally keep the sub at 60% volume. The bass at 60% is somewhat effective for normal viewing (movies, sports), but above that it gets very 'boomy', very fast. At 100% volume, the bass sounds terrible, no matter what type of music you run through it. The sud needs to be manually switched on and off, which is another downside. If size were not an issue, I would not buy this. I had expected Yamaha to deliver better because I own a number of Yamaha products that are great quality.

I ordered this subwoofer to complement an existing Yamaha amplifier and because of its compact size. The unit arrived dead on arrival. The box it arrived in looked in great condition, not like it took a 20ft drop. Not sure if something internal broke during transit or if it never worked because of a manufacturing error. You get what you pay for. Build quality is OK, the Power/Volume knobs feel dinky.
