But now that I’ve recently moved and have a modern and sleek bachelor pad with minimalist, Italian and Scandinavian décor along with wood floors with 10 foot ceilings, I didn’t want a big box sub sitting out in the room or over in some corner. I liked what I read about this little sub and it’s small profile. Then it hit me: perhaps it’s small enough to fit under my couch. I removed all the cushions, lifted and propped it up and took measurements. It was large enough to house this sub and enough clearance on top, even when sitting, to not bottom out on the top of the sub. I know what you’re thinking… muffled, boxy, boomy bass. Well, not as bad as you might think, and keep in mind as previously stated: I do not use this sub as part of my music stereo system – it’s only for movie LFE’s and some digital music I have in iTunes and internet radio (which sounds pretty crappy compared to my high-end vinyl system, so I don’t really care).
I installed this little sub underneath my couch with the port facing the opposite end (long side) so that it has the most room to expand. The couch has just little over 1” clearance off the hardwood floor all the way around. I then used the Yamaha receiver’s YPAO microphone mounted on a tripod in the sweet spot on the couch which is dead center in front of the monitor. It adjusted the levels of all the speakers and this sub. I slipped in a sci-fi, action movie to test it out, and I was thrilled. Not only are the LFE’s being sent to the sub plenty loud, but just like a real movie theater, you can “feel” it travel up your arse and into your chest! You should see the reaction of guests who come over and I demo my home theater and they experience this!
If you’re thinking of trying this yourself, it is essential that you have hardwood, tiles, etc. (no carpeting), because the lower bass frequencies of this sub are coming out of the down firing speaker, the higher bass frequencies are coming out of the side port. As far as setting it up, I followed the instructions for turning the sub’s volume to the half way mark, and while okay, over the next couple of weeks of playing different types of movies and some digital music files, I ended up tweaking it to turning the volume up one notch past half way (somewhere between half way and three quarters).
I’m thrilled with this unit and very impressed with how it fills the room and can be hidden completely out of site. Because it’s underneath of where I’m sitting, it doesn’t need to be bigger or have more wattage for you to hear and feel it. I am taking off one star, because as others have mentioned, it does not have a power up/down mode triggered by the presence or absence of a signal from the amp (I had an Onkyo sub as part of a cheap HTS system 10 years ago that had this technology) – why Yamaha is using a remote cable to hook into the amp is beyond me and my Yamaha receiver does not even have the remote cable connectivity (even if it did, I wouldn’t use it because my sub cable has to be 35’ and I’m not going to double up wires for that length). Fortunately, it worked out for me that the outlet this sub is plugged into is connected to a wall switch, and even if it weren’t, no big deal to unplug it when the movie’s over. I hope this gives you something to think about if you’re considering a sub for your home theater but would prefer it to be “out of sight”! Also, to be able to really feel those LFE's without having the amp turned up really loud is another plus. Try my trick, you just might like it… Enjoy!

My setup is a Denon AVR1513 receiver and Wharfedale 10.1 speakers, which as such sound good however I felt a lack of sound volume in the lower frequency department, I did not want an expensive Woofer which would then stick out like a sore thumb due to its size and shape, so decided to give this a try which had good feedback- ignoring the few negative comments which clearly relate to delivery issues, DOA or the inability to set up the woofer correctly. I am very happy with the results, The additional volume of bass is unobtrusive, in fact unless the woofer volume is turned up higher than 7/10 I only notice it when switching it off as then something is missing. Also you notice its presence when moving through the house and in some rooms all we can hear is the bass it produces even when we cannot hear much of the sound the Wharfedales produce.
If you have the right Yamaha AVR (presume it may work with others as well, so worth checking) a connector between the AVR and this woofer will turn on/off the woofer automatically- it does not work with my Denon 1513 as it does not have this function, however I can still operate the power switch on the front without problems :)
Build quality is good, instructions are meager as usual but sufficient for most I guess- it's not rocket science to connect the correct cable to the woofer socket on the one hand and the woofer socket on the receiver on the other hand. The bigger challenge for some may be the correct setup of the receiver/AVR, but their manual should give the required guidance. Don't slate Yamaha if you cannot work out how to set up your XYZ-AVR correctly! :)
Last note; I believe there is a 150 model available but looks like the YSTFSW150 is only available int he US, perhaps someone in the know could comment? Thanks!

I'm astounded! My husband loves the improvement, too! I'm additionally thrilled with the value that this Yamaha subwoofer presents. The price is incredibly cheap for such a quality product. If you're looking for a home theatre subwoofer, you just have to try this one. Bet you're blown away, too!
We're simply amazed!!
*** UPDATE *** Jan. 13,2015
We're absolutely ASTONISHED at the BIG sound this subwoofer produces! Our entire living room resonates with big, rich sound! We're hearing heavy, deep low end sound in our rear channels, but the only thing that has changed in our home theater setup is the addition of this Yamaha subwoofer. Magic. Magic is the only logical explanation as to how such large sound can now "magically" appear/sound as if it's coming from our rear surround speakers. Klipsch makes a great speaker, but this depth of sound is coming from that incredibly compact Yamaha sub! WOW!!!!!

It was a simple set up. All it too was hooking up the included RCA - RCA cable between the sub 1 output on the back to the amp to input on the back of the new Sub, plugged it in, set the volume to about half, then re-ran the speaker setup on the Amp.
The supplied RCA - RCA cable is about 3 or 4m long. As it's just a sub, it can go anywhere in a room without having any bearing on the sound.
The power cable supplied isn't quite so generous. It's about 1m, so you need to have it near a plug.
When I started listening to music etc. again, I wasn't sure if it was working or not, at least untill i switched the Sub off. The difference was significant.
This sub has a nice subtle sound to it, which adds depth without sounding boomy.
It fills the sonic gap that was there.
As other reviewers have said, you do need to remember to switch it off (and probably more likely in my case - on), but that's not a huge problem, depending where you have it placed.
I'm very glad I eventually bought one. I'm looking forward to some gaming with some decent sound now. :)
I bought it from the selller "Richer Sounds" as I had some Amazon vouchers to spend, and this was the same price as on their website.
It was dispached by the excelent DPD courier so I knew within an hour when it was ging to be delivered.

Note for the non-audiophiles contemplating this subwoofer: my receiver has a sub-woofer rca outlet, and I expected to just plug it in and play. No such luck - evidently this outlet from my receiver goes to a separate pre-amp, which I don't have. So after getting this subwoofer I had to get 2 speaker wire to rca plug adaptors, and plug them into a 2 female to 1 male rca adaptor and then plug that into the subwoofer. This worked easily for me as my receiver has an option to run an A and B set of stereo speakers. Should you happen to lack this option, I would suppose that using the same equipment I used you could simply twist together the wires going to the right and left speakers with the wires going to the subwoofer. Be aware I am not electrically savvy, and perhaps this might cause a problem. But maybe it will work and seems to be worth a try as compared to having your subwoofer sit there as a boat anchor. As in all electronics, have everything turned off when connecting or disconnecting components.
I included this note so that should you happen to need to do what I did, you can order the needed adaptors with your subwoofer and be spared the extra 2 weeks of waiting for them that I had to put up with, unless perchance you have the prime 2 day shipping account.

My reason for only giving four stars is that, despite the R-N500 having both 'remote in and out' connections, it will not switch the sub off when the amp is switched off. I am aware that this function works with a Yamaha soundbar and assumed it would work with my Yamaha amp especially as others have said in on-line reviews that it can be controlled by a Yamaha amp. I'm sure that the remote switching facility will probably work with a Yamaha 5.1 or 7.1 amp but if you are the owner of just a stereo Yamaha amp I would urge you to contact the manufacturer prior to purchase to check whether this feature will work with your amp.
Having said that I am happy with my purchase as an add-on to further my musical enjoyment although I would doubt that the die hard surround sound fan would find it powerful enough as I don't think it's going to rattle any walls. As far as remote switch off I have now wired the mains through a remote controlled multi way output block and now don't have to get up to power the unit on and off!

The sub volume needs tinkering with to get the balance right with your other kit, but this is well worth the time to do as the sound is greatly enhanced once completed. Too much bass will muddy your sound as I am sure you know, the sub should complement not overwhelm, but I guess that's down to personal taste and the intended application.
Now it's just a case of sitting back, putting some music on and enjoying the results.
If your wondering whether or not to invest, you're halfway to making a 'sound' (sorry couldn't resist) buying decision.
