(Which should come at no surprise considering it's price point and the product desription)
I purchased this mainly because it's cheap (duh) and because I'm intending on using it to support an older home theater system in a "modest" bedroom (approx. 11'x 12') which I'll primarily be using for music when getting it on or going to bed... Keep that in mind as you read my review. That is, the intended use of the sub, not the room. Pervert.
Features:
Power switch, power cable, volume, and line in. That's it. No frills at all. El strippo.
Sound quality:
Some have said this sub is "boomy", and to a degree it is. It's bass sound offers long decay and very good resonance... all of which is "tuneable" based on where it's placed in the room.
When I first hooked it up and placed it on the bottom shelf of my component rack it was whisper quiet. I had it maxed and it couldn't compete with my bookshelf speakers. I took it out and left it on the carpet in front of the component rack and it exploded! It shook the bloody room, scared my cat, and tightened my sphincter. At that point I figured I should experiment more with where it's placed. After a few more attempts with placement I finally settled with it being directly on the carpet under my bed (which couldn't be done with a standard box-type sub, mind).
The volume is set to about 60%. The bass now has enough punch and attack to support/enhance the double kicks from my favorite metal bands as well as the sustain and resonance for classical and country. The boomyness is now absent and my bed vibrates (sexy)!
In short, given it's operating parameters and lack of equalization, it's perfect. I imagine this will sound fantastic if/when I get a TV hooked up.
Once you've gone through proper room placement and volume equalization, you can basically forget about it and enjoy.
Appearance:
Even though it's hidden now, I wouldn't have minded if this was sitting in plain view. Actually, I was kind of hoping I could have set it out on display, it would've added to the cool factor of of my stereo. It's a pleasant looking unit and seems well made. Fit and finish is excellent, again, given it's price-point.
Overall, I'm pretty thrilled with this little guy- it's a great value. I could've saved $20 and bought a box type sub, but my placement options would have been far more limited, and more importantly, I wouldn't have a vibrating bed (sexy)!
If I had a more modern receiver with EQs built in, I'm willing to bet I could make this sub do whatever I wanted it to.
Except cook pancakes in the morning (sexy)!

This sub has a relatively small driver at only 6.5 inches but it definitely outputs enough low frequencies for movies and music for moderately sized rooms. This is possible because of Yamaha's Active Servo Technology II which doesn't need very large enclosure volumes for a given level of output. Also note that placement of this sub is very important if you want strong bass. This sub needs to be placed near a wall or corner to have the low frequencies emphasized otherwise you won't hear much bass and think it doesn't have enough power. During testing I put this sub in the middle of the room lined up with the listening position and as expected I could hardly hear any bass, but when I walked around the room I could hear lots of bass at different listening positions. What my little experiment showed was that placement is of utmost importance. Keep in mind this is not to be confused with below 100Hz directionality which will still hold true. I have it crossed over at 80Hz which is what THX recommends and it works well with large floor standing and bookshelf speakers. If you use tiny satellites you may want to crossover at 90Hz or 100Hz instead if your receiver allows it.
Now with that said don't expect this sub to output "tight" mid-bass at high volume. That just won't happen with this size sub. If you need strong tight mid-bass then you have two options...larger front speakers with 8"+ woofers and/or a 10"+ subwoofer. For the price and size this Yamaha is perfect for a 5.1 bedroom setup like mine. For a large home theater room with 7.1 I'd go with one of Yamaha's larger 10" driver based subs like the older Yamaha YST-SW315PN 10" Powered Subwoofer (Piano Black) or newer Yamaha YST-SW216BL Subwoofer
In summary I'm very satisfied with this sub...it's stylish design and performance has met my specific needs.

For months our neighbour insisted on blaring loud, intensely irritating, wildly rubbish tunes from what one can only assume, judging by the awful manner in which the trebles were tortured, one of those god awful all-in-one systems with more flashing lights and levels than the bridge of the enterprise and redunkulously designed, over sized speakers that you find in Comet surrounded by hypnotised teenagers.
In desperation I purchased this to attach to my Denon AVR-1507 which normally rarely gets an outing without headphones because it's a small flat and I'm normally very considerate.
Arrived on time as advertised, well packaged, simply designed and fairly attractive as these things go, seems very sturdy too.
Anyway I strategically placed and hooked the chappy up, turned sub-woofer output on the receiver and maxed out the volume on the sub.
Then after much deliberation I bunged Skrillex in the cd-player and waited.
As predicted the tortured thumping strains of tunes that needed no assistance in being gbh on the ears whatsoever soon invaded the living room uninvited.
I played one song.
My teeth rattled.
The floor vibrated.
My ears popped.
The song finished.
Silence.
Nothing since.
:)
Anyone need a sub?

This arrived later than the other bits so I've done a trial without and then added this after - for anyone wondering if its worth getting a sub the answer is yes and this one worked great with my system.
Small enough to fit under the couch

Within 5 mins I had a sound system that my wife and I felt that we where at the cinema
The highs mids and lows are great . Would reconmend this combo to family and friends
Great valve and great sound with out a lot of other expenses

If you buy the Yamaha soundbar then I recommend you buy this subwoofer to get decent bass. The soundbar alone does not give you the cinematic rumble you expect. I was disappointed with the soundbar until I got this subwoofer. Now I love watching movies at home!

The best part is definitely the sound, its ideal for a medium sized lounge, with or without carpet, the base is loud but has depth, you can hear base guitar, strings, drums and even deep vocals clearly without that annoying buff you get with a surround sound systems. Works best when the volume is low, raise it and it will blow your roof off!!! Great for watching movies through too.
Highly recommend it!

You do have to push some buttons on the soundbar to switch off the internal sub - so don't forget to check the manual.
The bass is really lovely - I don't even have it halfway up - and it sounds deep and rich.
A great purchase
